Important Information
WARNING
When you receive your SMART Sympodium™ IC-150 or TL-150 console, the backlight setting
is 70% of maximum. This configuration compensates for degradation and extends the
longevity of the backlight and other heat-sensitive components. This setting is particularly
important if you operate the console in an environment where operating temperatures reach or
exceed 95°F (35°C). If you operate the console in such an environment, any alteration of the
backlight to a setting beyond 70% will void your SMART Limited Equipment Warranty (see
paragraph (iii) of Warranty Exclusions in the warranty).
The console requires adequate ventilation when installed in an enclosure. Do not install the
console in an enclosure without 9 sq. in. (58.1 cm2) of surface area set aside for ventilation.
WARNING
As the screen in the IC-150 and the TL-150 is extremely sensitive to liquids, don’t apply glass
cleaner or any organic solvent, such as alcohol or even mild detergent. Use of these cleaners
can damage the screen’s finish or seep into the electronics, and will void your warranty
coverage. See page 32 for detailed cleaning information.
Do not immerse the stylus in any liquid.
WARNING
If the interactive screen is damaged, DO NOT touch any liquid that may be leaking from it.
This liquid is an irritant. If it makes contact with your skin, eyes or mouth, rinse immediately
with running water for at least 15 minutes. Consult a physician if this liquid makes contact with
your eyes or mouth.
WARNING
Do not use the IC-150 or the TL-150 in a facility control system that requires extremely high
reliability; the console may cause other electronic devices to malfunction, or other devices
may cause the console to malfunction. Where use is prohibited, power off the console to
prevent the possibility of it causing other electronic devices to malfunction. SMART
Technologies Inc. does not accept any liability for direct or consequential damages. For
details, refer to the warranty shipped with your unit.

Other Precautions
For operating safety and proper installation, read this guide carefully and observe the following
precautions.
The Console
•The digitizer inside the screen won’t work if you place it in the vicinity of a large magnetic
field. For this reason, keep speakers and power transformers away from the screen.
•Do not place sharp or heavy objects on the console—especially on the screen. These
objects may scratch the screen’s surface or block the ventilation holes. Do not use any
instrument other than the tethered stylus on the screen. Other instruments may damage
the screen’s coating.
•Do not connect or disconnect the video or power cable while the console is on. Doing so
may damage the liquid crystal display (LCD) or the computer video card.
•Use the console with a VGA or DVI graphics Card. An inappropriate graphics card may
damage the screen.
•Do not exceed a horizontal refresh rate of 75 Hz for input sources. This can cause the
screen to overheat.
•Do not cover any vents; they are needed for ventilation
The Stylus
•The stylus is a sealed unit. There aren’t any user-repairable parts inside the stylus, nor
are there any batteries. If you attempt to open the stylus, you may break the seal and
render the stylus unusable.
•With use, the stylus wears down. Do not use a stylus that has worn down to a sharp or
angular tip, because it may damage the screen. See page 32 for information on changing
the stylus tip.
•Prevent children from playing with stylus because they may accidentally remove the small
tip and create a choking hazard
The Environment
•Avoid setting up and using the product in an area with excessive levels of dust, humidity
and cigarette smoke, where it’s exposed to direct sunlight, severe temperature changes,
heat from other appliances, water or any other liquid
•Do not modify the power cord. Handle it carefully and avoid excessive bending. You
should route the power cord in an area where it’s unlikely to be stepped on, or pinched by
items placed on or against it. If you must run the cable over the floor, lay it in a flat,
straight line, and secure it to the floor with tape or a cable management strip of contrasting
color.
•Your unit comes with a three-prong grounding-type power plug. This plug will only fit into a
grounding-type power outlet. If you are unable to insert the plug into an outlet, contact
your electrician to replace the outlet. Do not circumvent the plug’s safety restriction.
•Locate the console so users always have clear and direct access to the main power plug.
Always disconnect the console before performing any installation or maintenance.
•Disconnect the power to the console during electrical storms or if it won’t be used over a
long period of time
•Avoid subjecting the console to intensive shock or vibration. You may damage it by hitting
or dropping it.

•If you or the service technician needs replacement parts, use ones specified by SMART
Technologies Inc., or parts approved by SMART that have the same characteristics as the
originals

Most of the procedures in this guide pertain to both the Microsoft® Windows® and Mac OS
operating systems. However, a Mac icon in the margin denotes information that relates solely
to Macintosh computers running the Mac OS 9.x or earlier operating system, a Mac OS X icon
indicates information that relates to the Mac OS X operating system, while a similarly placed
Win icon accompanies information specific to the Windows operating systems.
Locating More Information
The target audience for this guide includes both technical people, who will integrate the
Sympodium module into an interactive room system, and users of the Sympodium console.
However, this guide doesn’t cover the many features of SMART Board™ software, because
they are described in the SMART Board User’s Guide that comes with your unit. You can also
make use of the extensive online Help files that come with this software.
While reading the SMART Board User’s Guide and the online Help, keep in mind that:

Getting to Know the Console
The SMART Sympodium IC-150 and TL-150 console combine an interactive screen with SMART
Board software to create a dynamic presentation environment. The combination of the interactive
screen, pen tool buttons and battery-free stylus makes a powerful interactive writing surface that
allows you to control computer applications and annotate over them.
NOTE: The TL-150 houses the IC-150 in a lectern-style tabletop unit. With its connection panel, all
the integration ports on the TL-150 are conveniently accessible for use in a permanent or mobile
configuration.
As a presenter, you can take full advantage of all the SMART Board software features and the
natural pen motion of the tethered stylus while standing at the console, facing the audience. If
you’re the integrator, you can easily incorporate the IC-150 with tables, desks or lectern-style
furniture, or permanently integrate the TL-150 into a table, desk or other furniture, or use the
TL-150 to create a mobile configuration. Moreover, you can integrate either setup with other
systems to make a variety of multimedia tools accessible to presenters.

Both Sympodium consoles come with SMART Board software, which you can install on any
connected computer. This software allows you to annotate over any computer application, and
then save these annotations. The software features include:
•SMART Board tools – annotation tools to customize the pen tool buttons so they fit your
presentation style
•Floating Tools – a virtual palette of annotation tools that increase the screen’s interactive
functionality
•SMART Notebook™ software – an application that includes many annotation tools, as
well as the ability to organize, save and share your annotations. Notebook software is
great for creating your presentation or jotting down notes during your demonstration.
•SMART Recorder – an application for Windows operating systems that creates a video
file of everything you do on the screen. With SMART Recorder, you can effortlessly
create a record of your presentation.
•SMART Video Player – an application for Windows operating systems that allows you to
annotate over video and graphics, and then save or clear these annotations. Use this
application to highlight key aspects of your presentation video.
•SMART Keyboard – a virtual keyboard that you activate with the stylus to enter text into
an application. If you use a Windows operating system, the application can convert your
handwriting to typed text.
•SMART Aware – an application that works in the background to make a number of
conferencing, graphics, word processing and presentation programs board aware

The Interactive Screen
The screen is the console’s visual display as well as its interactive writing surface. With
SMART Board software running on a connected computer, touching the screen with the stylus
has the same effect as moving and clicking a mouse.
Interactive Screen
The screen is a display device with a native resolution of 1024 x 768. Like a monitor, the
screen will occasionally get dirty, so you’ll need to clean it. To do this, follow the instructions
on page 32.
An electromagnetic digitizer is integrated with the 15" (38.1-cm) liquid crystal display (LCD).
This digitizer makes the screen interactive. However, it won’t function if placed in the vicinity of
a large magnetic field, so when you’re planning your integration, keep speakers and power
transformers away from the screen.
You can adjust the screen settings (see page 27). However, we recommend you keep the
backlight setting at less than 70%, otherwise you’ll void the SMART Limited Equipment Warranty.
NOTE: The screen may have a very small number of pixels permanently illuminated or not
illuminated at all. This is normal and doesn’t mean that the screen is defective.

The console has two rows of buttons and indicators: an upper row of pen tool buttons that control
the stylus behavior and a lower row that controls the hardware-related behavior of the screen.

The upper row contains a Communications indicator and the following eight pen tool buttons:
•Left-Click (Windows or Mac OS X operating system) or Click (Mac OS 9.x or earlier
operating system)
•Right-Click (Windows or Mac OS X operating system) or Click (Mac OS 9.x or earlier
operating system)
•Eraser
•Colored Ink (black, blue, red and green)

The Communications indicator glows either green or red, depending on the status of
communication between the console and the input device, and each button in the top row,
except for the Keyboard button, illuminates when you press it.
NOTE: The stylus’s behavior only changes when you select a different pen tool button, with the
exception of the Right-Click button. After you press this button, the next pen contact with the
screen behaves as a right-click. However, after that, stylus contact with the screen reverts to a
left-click.
The interactive screen only responds to stylus contact with the screen. At the contact point,
the electronics in the stylus generate X,Y coordinates. These coordinates flow from the screen
to an RS-232 port, and then to the Serial In (J5) connection on the pen-tool selector circuit
board. This board, which houses the switches and indicators inside the console, sends the
coordinates along with the tool selection information to the serial port (J4) on the back of
console. A standard straight-through, 6' (1.8 m) RS-232 serial cable (DB9F/DB9M) connects
to this port and, for the IC-150, carries the information to the connected device. The TL-150
has a short serial cable between this port on the console and the serial port on the connection
panel. If you have a TL-150, you must connect the straight-through, 6' (1.8 m) RS-232 serial
cable (DB9M/F) to the connection panel to carry this information to your device.
NOTE: The connected computer must be running SMART Board software to interpret the
stylus coordinates as mouse activity. While your console comes with the most recently
released version of SMART Board software, you can also use SMART Board driver 7.0 or
greater (Windows operating systems) or SMART Board driver 6.0.2 or greater (Macintosh
computers) to operate the Sympodium console.
The lower row of buttons controls the screen itself. Use the four buttons on the left to alter the
screen settings (see page 27 for details). The Power button is on the right side. Between
these buttons are two indicators: Status and Power. The Status indicator glows when the
stylus touches the screen. The Power indicator glows green when you power on the screen or
orange when a communication problem arises. See page 33 for more information on how to
interpret indicator color.

The Stylus
Use the special stylus to activate program components and write or erase annotations on the
screen. With the tip of the stylus, press on the screen with the same amount of pressure you’d
use if you were writing on paper with a pen.

NOTE: You must have SMART Board software running to use the stylus and eraser. In other
words, if you want to write on the screen, make sure the SMART Board icon appears on the
computer screen.
Your unit comes with replacement tips for the stylus. If the stylus tip becomes too short or
angular, replace it. See page 32 for instructions.
The Connectivity Ports
The Sympodium IC-150 console has three ports: a female RS-232 serial port, a female
RGBHV video port and a power port. SMART Technologies Inc. supplies the appropriate
cables for each port.
The serial port uses an RS-232 cable with standard 9-pin connectors. For a detailed diagram
of the console’s RS-232 port, including cable pin assignments and other information related to
the RS-232 connection, see page 41.
NOTE: Ensure that your unit connects to an RS-232 device that supports modem controls.
The video port is an RGBHV input port for the supplied custom DVI/RGB cable. The other end
of this cable has a standard HD DB15 female connector. The signal received by the screen’s
video port should have these characteristics:
•the R, G and B signals must be 0.7 Vp-p
•the input impedance of the video circuits is nominal 75 ohms
•the synchronization signals are logic levels with a maximum level of +5V DC. These
synchronization circuits have input impedance of greater than 500 ohms.
•synchronization signals can be positive going or negative going
If your graphics card supports DVI output, you can use a DVI/DVI cable (not supplied).
However, the connector at the console end must be male, as the console has a female port.

The console uses a single 18V DC power supply, which comes with the unit. The TL-150 has
this supply mounted inside the tabletop cabinet. Along with the power supply, you received a
country-specific power cable to connect to an outlet. For both units, once you connect the
power, 18V DC power flows from the Power In connection (J1) on the pen tool selector board
inside the console, through the pen tool selector board, and then to the Power Out connection
(J2), which is also inside the console. From there, the electricity goes to the Power In
connector on the interactive screen.
The AC or MAINS input is designed for both 120V AC and 220V AC operation. Nevertheless,
the Sympodium console is an auto-switching unit, so no user intervention is required.
The TL-150 contains the IC-150 and its ports, but the TL-150 also has the advantage of a
connection panel. You make all connections to the connection panel, which contains three
ports: HD DB15 video (female), DB9 RS-232 serial (female) and a power port.

System Requirements
The Sympodium console uses a serial connection. However, if the computer you’re
connecting has a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port, you can easily connect one of the SMART
USB adapters (USB-ADP or the longer USB-FRU with a DB9 M/M gender adapter). To order
a SMART USB adapter, contact your dealer.
USB connectivity isn’t supported by the Windows NT® 4.0 or Windows 95 operating system
(unless you install service release 2.1 or 2.5 in the Windows 95 operating system).
SMART also has a wireless serial connection available. Purchase the SMART WC2 Wireless
Serial Adapter if a wireless connection works better in your integration. Of course, you’ll still
have to connect the video cable.
The Sympodium console doesn’t support UNIX® operating system-compatible SMART Board
software.

Locating the Serial Number

You’ll find the serial number for the SMART Sympodium IC-150 module on the bottom of the
console. The serial number has a prefix of SSIC.

The SMART Sympodium TL-150 module has two serial numbers: one on the console (at the
location shown above) with a prefix of SSIC and one on the tabletop cabinet with the prefix
SSTL.
When you register your TL-150, use the serial number with the prefix SSTL.

Connection Information
The Sympodium console connects to a device that transmits video and serial signals. Most
often, this device is a computer.
This section of the guide describes the cables supplied and connections needed with the
console and how to extend them, the video input signals needed, how to integrate the console
with a computer and a projector, and finally what types of cables you should use to integrate
the console with other room elements.
Supplied Cables and Connections
The console has three connection ports: a serial, a video and a power port. The IC-150 and the
TL-150 both come with the following three cables so you can connect the console to your device:
•a 6'
(1.8 m) RGB video cable (the IC-150 has a custom cable with a male DVI-I connector
at one end and a male HD DB15 connector at the other, while the TL-150 has this same
custom cable integrated into the tabletop housing and another 6' (1.8 m) HD DB15 video
cable that you connect to your serial/video output device)
•a straight-through 6'
(1.8 m) DB9F/DB9M RS-232 serial cable
•an 18V DC power adapter and a 6' (1.8 m) country-specific power cable
RGB Video Cable
With the IC-150, you receive one customized 6' (1.8 m) cable. During the installation process,
you’ll connect the DVI-I end of the DVI/HD DB15 RGB cable to the female DVI/RGB port on the
console. If the device you’re connecting has a graphics card that supports DVI output, you can
supply and connect a DVI/DVI cable. However, remember that you need SMART Board software
to make the screen interactive.
With the TL-150, the custom DVI/RGB cable already connects the IC-150 to the TL-150’s
connection panel using an HD DB15 F/F gender adapter. The 6' (1.8 m) video cable that comes
with the TL-150 has HD DB15 M/M connectors for you to integrate the unit with your video source.
If you need to extend the RGB cable, use a shielded cable that uses 75-ohm coaxial pairs.
The total cable length should not exceed 50' (15 m).
If the video source transmits any signal other than RGB, you’ll need to integrate a video scaler
to convert the signal to RGB. Also, you can’t directly connect mini-DIN4, RCA or BNC
connectors to the console.
RS-232 Data Cable
Both the IC-150 and the TL-150 come with a 6' (1.8 m) RS-232 serial cable (DB9F/DB9M) to
connect the console to the device. For the IC-150, this cable connects to the underside of the
console. For the TL-150, connect this cable to the connection panel. Inside the tabletop
cabinet, an RS-232 cable then connects the connection panel to the interactive screen.
If you need to extend the serial cable, use an RS-232 serial-extension cable. The total cable
length should not exceed 50' (15 m).
Power Supply
Your unit comes with an 18V DC adapter and a power cable for you to connect to your power
outlet. This power supply has an LED indicator that glows green when AC power input is
present.

Input Source Signal Information
Different input devices, such as document cameras, VCRs or DVD players, may produce
different types of signals, including:
•composite (using RCA connectors)
•S-video (using mini-DIN4 connectors)
•component (using RCA or BNC connectors)
The console accepts RGBHV input, which is an RGB signal that also contains horizontal and
vertical information. If your source transmits any video signals other than RGBHV, you’ll need
to scale the signal to an RGB format using a video scaler. Most VCRs and DVD players don’t
produce RGB video signals.
Different video scalers also generate different output formats. Some scalers convert the signal
to RGB with horizontal (H) and vertical (V) scan rates that match the input rate exactly. Other
scalers have selectable output resolutions.
Use the video input signal that delivers the best quality. For video images, component output
produces a better image than S-video, which in turn produces a better image than composite
video.
NOTE: While document cameras usually have S-video outputs, some models may also have
RGBHV (HD DB15) interfaces. Those devices can connect directly to the console, so you
don’t need a scaler in your integration.
When selecting a scaler to use, make sure the output resolution is compatible with the screen.
NOTE: The maximum frequency for any video signal is 75 Hz. Exceeding that frequency may
damage the screen or the image won’t display as expected.
Integrating the Console with a Computer and a Projector
You can easily integrate the Sympodium console with a computer and a projector so your audience
can see your annotations.
If your projector has an RGB video output, you can connect the computer's DB9 serial cable to the
console's serial port. (For the TL-150, this port is on the connection panel.) Connect an RGB video
cable (not supplied) to the projector's video input port, and then connect the custom DVI/RGB video
cable from the projector's video output port to the console's video port. For the TL-150, this port is on
the console's connection panel.

Cable Requirements, Specifications and Recommendations
While the console comes with most of the cables you’ll need for integration, you may find that
your overall integration requires additional cabling. If this is the case, use high-quality cables,
which allow for optimum performance.
Use the following specific cabling recommendations to assist with your integration.
RGB Video Cables
More than any other computer peripheral, the video display needs the best shielded cables
you can provide. Fluorescent lights and power cords can cause interference and loss of color
and resolution. Without a well-shielded, high-quality cable, you’ll compromise the visual quality
of the images displayed on the screen.
For example, triple-shielded RGB cables have individual RGB color signal conductors that are
coaxially shielded. Outer foil and braided shielding encase all the wires in the cable to ensure
that a monitor with a 50' (15 m) video cable will still receive a high-quality signal.
For both consoles, you can extend the video cable with a high-quality HD DB15 (M/F) video
cable extension, although the total cable length shouldn't exceed 50' (15 m). Use a cable with
gold-plated copper contacts for maximum conductivity. These cables are designed to support
high-speed, high-resolution imaging.
Any RGB cables you use should have these specifications:
•3 or 5 coaxial conductors
•nominal impedance: 75 ohms
•nominal capacitance: 17.3 picofarads/ft.
•nominal velocity of propagation: 78%
•nominal attenuation: 2.2 MHz .8 db/100 ft.

Environmental Considerations
Setting the Screen Viewing Angle for the IC-150
Determine the placement of the interactive screen in your integration. Depending on the
room’s lighting conditions, you may want to angle the screen. This angle can be +/-80°from
the horizontal. Install the console so its height can accommodate users of different heights.
Ventilation
Good ventilation will keep the console from overheating. Because of this, it’s especially
important that the console have adequate ventilation while the screen is operating since it
generates a fair amount of heat when powered. To maintain a consistent operating
temperature, don’t block or cover any ventilation holes on the console.
NOTE: For the IC-150, the ventilation holes are located at the back of the console. For the
TL-150, the ventilation holes are along the bottom edge of the console sides, and above the
connection panel.
Placing the Keyboard and Mouse
You should place the computer’s keyboard and mouse near the IC-150 and TL-150. You’ll
need them because the stylus won’t function until you install and open SMART Board
software.
External Factors
Several external factors can affect the operation of the console, such as the heat generated by
television lights or the airflow in the room. If there is inadequate airflow, install a fan. We
recommend using a DC brushless fan to increase air circulation in an enclosure.
NOTE: If you use an AC-voltage fan, keep the power wire away from all other cables and
ensure the fan you use is a low-noise model.
Install the console in a cool, dry location without excessive levels of dust, humidity and
cigarette smoke.

Console Installation and Connection
The instructions for installing and connecting your Sympodium console differ according to the
model you have. However, you’ll connect the console on both units to a power outlet and a
video/serial device, such as a computer. This device should have RGB video and serial
connectors. If it transmits any signal other than RGB, you’ll have to integrate a video scaler.
If you’re using a computer as your input device and it has two video outputs, you can connect the
console and an external projector to display the same image. Other alternatives include using a
distribution amplifier to send the video signal to more than one source and integrating with a
projector that has a video output port (see page 8). With these setups, the annotations you make
on the interactive screen are projected onto another screen for your audience to see.
While the cable that comes with the console has DB9 RS-232 serial connectors, you can
obtain a USB adapter (USB-FRU or the shorter USB-ADP) to connect to a computer's USB
port. SMART also has available a wireless serial connection, which you could use with a
gender adapter to connect your computer. Of course, you’ll still have to connect a video cable
to the cable extensions.
Use this section of the guide to install and connect your IC-150 (refer to the instructions below)
and your TL-150 (refer to page 14), and to power on the unit (page 24).
IMPORTANT: Don’t connect the video or power cables if your console or your computer is
turned on. Doing so may damage the console.
Installing and Connecting the IC-150
You can use any type of material as a mounting surface for the Sympodium IC-150 console.
However, this console has an estimated bearing surface of 18 sq. in. (116.1 cm2) and an
estimated weight of 15 lb. (6.8 kg), so ensure your mounting surface can support a console of
that weight and size.
NOTE: SMART Technologies Inc. doesn’t supply fasteners to affix your console to a mounting
surface, so you’ll have to acquire the appropriate fasteners. The maximum screw size is
No. 8 (M4).
To install the console, you need the supplied hex key and four 8-32 X ¼" hex socket screws.
You’ll find these items in the bag labeled Console Mounting Screws, which is inside the
Console Mounting Accessories bag.
To install the IC-150 into the mounting surface
1 In your surface, create the console opening and the four required screw holes using the
provided template. This template shows the size of the opening and the hole locations.
