Medication name: Alprostadil
Medication dose:
Medication concentration
Infusion rate: 2 ml/hr
Tasks I must complete everyday:
□Check PICC line site for signs of infection (redness, discharge, pain)
□Check oxygen saturations twice per day
Tasks I must complete EVERY Monday, and Thursday:
□Change the batteries of the CADD- SOLIS Pump
□Record my weight (at the same time of the day – Monday only)
When I should call for help:
□If the pump stops and I can’t get it started
□If my oxygen saturations are less than 75%
□If my temperature is more than 37.5 ○C
□If Chelsea is irritable or just does not seem right
Who should I call for help:
Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm: call the Cardiology nurse at 604-875-2345
local 7574
After hours and week-ends, to speak to a Cardiologist: call 604-875-2161
In an emergency, call 911
CHANGING THE BATTERY – Every Monday and Thursday
The battery life on the CADD- SOLIS pump is approximately 120 hours (5 days) running
at 10 ml/hr.
1. When the pump is off, turn the dial on the top of the pump to open the battery
compartment
2. Remove the 4 AA batteries and insert 4 new AA
3. Close the battery compartment lid and turn the dial to lock the lid
4. Carry extra batteries in your back pack when you are not at home
5. Change the battery first before loading the cassette
ATTACHING NEW CASSETTE/TUBING
Alternate pumps when changing the cassette/tubing
1. Wash Hands
2. Follow the pharmacy instructions for mixing the Alprostadil and filling the cassette
3. Remove the protective caps and connect the extension tubing to the cassette
tubing, being careful to not let the tips of the catheter touch anything
4. Remove protective blue shield from cassette.
5. Open cassette latch
6. Attach cassette and close latch
7. Insert the pump key into the cassette/keypad lock and turn clockwise to lock
8. Press the on/off switch (on the side of the pump) to turn on the pump
9. The screen displays “Do you want to start a new patient?” Press YES
10.Enter key code using arrows and select key. Code is 1 2 3
11.Press ACCEPT VALUE
12.Screen displays “Select Therapy” Press SELECT (Chelsea)
13.Screen displays “Select Qualifier” Press SELECT (Continuous infusion)
14.Screen Displays “Select Drug” Press SELECT (Alprostadil)
15.Screen displays “Are these Correct?” Press YES
16.Screen Displays Programming …. Then “Review Pump Settings” Press REVIEW
17.Press ACCEPT VALUE Continuous rate 2ml/hr and Reservoir vol. 50ml
18.Press NEXT
19.Screen Displays “PRIME TUBING?” Press YES
20.Screen Displays “Disconnect tubing from patient, open clams. Then press
PRIME
21.Press STOP PRIMING when fluid has reached the end of the tubing
22.The screen displays “CONTINUE PRIMING” Press NO
23.Disconnect old tubing/pump from Chelsea’s PICC line, clean the end of the PICC
line with a chlorhexadine wipe and attach new tubing/pump being careful to not
touch the ends of the tubing. If the end is touched, wipe the end with a
chlorhexadine wipe before attaching
24.Check to make sure all the tubing clamps are OPEN
25.The screen displays “Start Pump?” Press YES when you are ready to begin the
infusion. The pump will start running
TO STOP THE PUMP
1. Press STOP/START button
2. Screen displays “Stop Pump?” Press YES
TURNING THE PUMP OFF
Press the on/off button on the side of the pump
The screen displays “Power Down?”
Press YES
ALARMS
HIGH PRIORITY ALARM
A RED screen is displayed and the pump will automatically stop
SCREEN IS BLANK AND ALARM IS SOUNDING
This means the pump has lost power and is no longer delivering any medication
Plug the pump in (if it is not plugged in)
Make sure the battery door is closed securely
Change the batteries (if needed) and turn the pump back on
BATTERY DEPLETED. PUMP STOPPED
Install 4 new AA batteries
Restart the pump
DOWN STREAM OCCLUSION. CLEAR OCCLUSION BETWEEN PUMP AND CHILD
There is a blockage or kink in the tubing or the tubing clamp is closed
Delivery of the medication pauses and will resume once the blocked is cleared
Check the clamp to ensure it is open and check the tubing for kinks
RESERVOIR VOLUME IS ZERO. PUMP STOPPED
The cassette is empty. The pump will stop and cannot run. Install a new cassette.
MEDIUM PRIORITY ALARM
An AMBER screen is displayed and the pump will continue to run.
RESERVOIR VOLUME IS LOW
The level of the fluid in the cassette is low. This will alarm 4 hours before the medication
is finished. Install a new cassette at the same time every day.
LOW PRIORITY ALARM
ABLUE screen is displayed and the pump will continue to run and the alarm
automatically clears after 5 seconds.
BATTERY LOW, REPLACE BATTERY
Plug the pump in and install 4 new AA batteries
AC ADAPTOR UNPLUGGED
Press Acknowledge
