It is very important that our customers review all the resources in the in-service package they
receive.
By reviewing the in-service resources provided, you may increase the useful life of the recliners.
Failure to operate the recliner as directed may lead to premature wear or permanent damage.
Warranty coverage includes material and workmanship failures, not misuse or abuse. Use these in-
service resources for new users and as a “refresher” for current users.

Summary of safety precautions
WARNING
WARNING: Always place recliner in an upright position or a fully reclined position when cleaning or
maintaining your recliner to avoid the risk of injury. This recliner moves easily without an occupant in the
recliner and may create pinch points when not fully reclined or upright.
WARNING: Always keep hands, feet, and legs clear of the recline mechanism to avoid the risk of
injury. The mechanism creates pinch points that may cause harm to the operator.
WARNING: Do not exceed the safe working load of the recliner. Safe working load is determined by
occupant weight plus attachments to recliner. Exceeding safe working load may cause product damage
and injury.
WARNING: Always fully lock the casters before entry and exit of recliner to avoid the risk of injury.
Casters roll when unlocked and may cause injury.
WARNING: Always fully unlock casters before you move the recliner to avoid the risk of injury and
product damage.
WARNING: Always lock the transfer arm when transferring an occupant or disinfecting the recliner to
avoid the risk of injury. Occupant may be able to operate the transfer arm if not locked, which may cause
bodily harm.
WARNING: Do not use the transfer arm while the recliner is in the Trendelenburg position to avoid the
risk of injury. The recliner moves forward as the occupant reclines. If Trendelenburg is activated before
full recline is reached, the transfer arm may not allow for enough clearance to safely perform a lateral
transfer.
WARNING: Do not perform CPR in this recliner, the recliner surfaces may be too soft to reach proper
chest compression depth.
WARNING: Never place hands near or on a recliner mechanism when it is in motion to avoid the risk
of injury. Do not place your hands where you cannot see. To assist an occupant in opening or closing the
footrest: place your hands on upholstered surfaces only.
WARNING Always fully recline the recliner before you activate the Trendelenburg release bar to reach
the Trendelenburg position.
WARNING: Never clean or maintain your recliner while it is occupied, doing so may cause harm to the
occupant.
WARNING: Always disinfect support surfaces between occupants to avoid risk of cross
contamination.
WARNING: Do not use foley hook for restraint purposes.
WARNING: Direct skin contact with visibly soiled permeable material may increase risk of infection.
WARNING: Improper methods of operating the recliner can damage the recliner and void the
warranty. Only operate the product as described in this manual. Modification of the product or any
components of the product is prohibited and can cause unpredictable operation resulting in injury.

CAUTION
CAUTION: Always make sure that new recliner inspection is completed by someone who understands
the operations manual. Improper operation of the recliner may cause product damage and void your
warranty.
CAUTION: Do not use the push handle to raise the front casters off the floor while an occupant is
seated in the recliner. This may damage the recline mechanism.
CAUTION: Do not force the recliner into position; permanent damage may result. The recliner works
with normal effort when operated properly.
CAUTION: Always make sure the backrest is fully upright before you close the footrest. Forcing the
footrest closed before the backrest is fully upright may bend the recliner mechanism.
CAUTION: Return the recliner to the TV position before closing the footrest. Closing the footrest while
in the full recline position may damage the mechanism and will void your warranty.
CAUTION: Do not use a high-pressure cleaner, wash tunnel, or “hose down” method to clean this
recliner, doing so may cause premature degradation and product damage.
CAUTION: Do not immerse the product in cleaning or disinfectant solutions to avoid premature
degradation.
CAUTION: Always rinse the product with clean water and dry after you clean or disinfect the product.
Cleaning and disinfecting agents are corrosive in nature and may cause damage to the product.
CAUTION: Do not unzip the back of the armrests for cleaning and disinfecting, doing so could cause
solutions to pool on the fabric causing premature degradation.
CAUTION: Do not use cleaners or disinfectants marked “for hard non-porous surfaces only” unless
approved by the upholstery manufacturer, to avoid surface deterioration.
CAUTION: Always pretest any cleaning method or agent on a small hidden area to make sure the
method and agent does not cause product damage.

Summary of pinch points
The recliner has moving parts that create pinch points. The recliner moves easily without an
occupant in the recliner and may create pinch points when not in upright, TV, or full recline
positions.

Product description
All recliners are unpowered, manually operated products which provide a seating surface for
intended users to sit. Products are each capable of reclining the backrest, extending a retractable
footrest and have caster and brake options.
Value: Includes fixed arms, push handle, and optional accessories (pillow, bolster, head flap, foot
tray, push handle).
Clinical: Includes all Value features (excludes Value’s fixed arms) and optional accessories plus
transfer arm(s), foley bag hooks, 4” dual-tread casters, steer lock and central locking brake.

Expected service life
The Unity series recliner has an 8-year expected service life under normal use conditions and with
appropriate periodic maintenance.
Date of manufacture
You can locate the date of manufacture underneath the footrest of the recliner. Below is a picture
of the label.

manufacture. Please have the serial number found on the (base frame, left side) of the recliner

Receiving new recliners
CAUTION: Always make sure that new recliner inspection is completed by someone who understands
the operations manual. Improper operation of the recliner may cause product damage and void your
warranty.
New recliner setup and inspection
Complete the following steps when you receive new recliners:
•Remove all packing material including foam wrap and bag. If desired, the bag may
be replaced after recliner inspection.
•Attach the backrest.
NOTE: Your recliner will arrive with the backrest face down in the seat.
b. Locate two red thumb knobs in the package attached to the push
handle.
c. Lift the backflap and remove any cardboard.
d. Lift backrest and position back brackets over bayonets and slide into
place, slightly push on backrest to ensure backrest is locked in place.
e. Using your fingers, tighten two red thumb knobs through the back
bracket into the back frame.

•Examine recliner surfaces for damage.
•Make sure all recliner functions and features work. Do this immediately upon receipt
of your recliners.

Reporting damage
To report damage:
1. Note any damage on the bill of lading and take pictures.
2. Keep shipping cartons, pallets, and other shipping materials to prove any damage
to the freight carrier. If possible, save an undamaged carton and pallet in the event
a recliner must be returned to the factory.
3. Contact Stryker Customer Service or Technical Support at: 1-800-327-0770
immediately to report the damage. All claims must be filed by the consignee and
reported within 45 days of receipt of shipment.
Return authorization
To return:
•Stryker customer service department must authorize any returns and will issue a
return authorization number by fax or email.
•All returns must be sent prepaid by the sender, except for provable shipping
damage.
•Any recliner put into use will not be returnable due to the subject of infection
control.
Storage
To store:
1. Cover recliner and store in a dry area.
2. Do not place objects on top of the recliner that may damage the upholstery.
In-service procedures
Before recliners are put into service, all personnel should review this manual. This manual should
remain with the product even if the product is sold, as this is a permanent part of the recliner.
WARNING: Improper methods of operating the recliner can damage the recliner and void the
warranty. Only operate the product as described in this manual. Modification of the product or any
components of the product is prohibited and can cause unpredictable operation resulting in injury.
Modifying this product also voids the warranty. If you cannot locate your in-service packet, contact

Operating instructions
For safe recliner operation
WARNING: Do not exceed the safe working load of the recliner. Safe working load is determined by
occupant weight plus attachments to recliner. Exceeding safe working load may cause product damage
and injury.
WARNING: Always fully lock the casters before entry and exit of the recliner to avoid the risk of
injury. Casters roll when unlocked and may cause injury.
WARNING: Always fully unlock casters before you move the recliner to avoid the risk of injury and
product damage.
WARNING: Always lock the transfer arm when transferring an occupant or disinfecting the recliner to
avoid the risk of injury. Occupant may be able to operate the transfer arm if not locked which may cause
bodily harm.
WARNING: Do not use the transfer arm while the recliner is in the Trendelenburg position to avoid the
risk of injury. The recliner moves forward as the occupant reclines. If Trendelenburg is activated before
full recline is reached, the transfer arm may not allow for enough clearance to safely perform a lateral
transfer.

injury. The mechanism creates pinch points that may cause harm to the operator.
•Casters should always remain locked (See recliner options and accessories) unless the
recliner is being relocated. Never assume caster brakes have been set, always ensure
caster locks are fully locked.
•Place the recliner in the upright position (See recliner positions) before allowing the
occupant in or out of the recliner. Do not enter or exit the recliner while the footrest is
extended.
•Transfer arm is only to be used with the help of a qualified user and is intended for
pivot or lateral transfer only.
•This recliner is designed with a wall-hugger mechanism. Make sure you have
approximately 5 in. (12.7 cm) between the recliner back and the wall for proper
operation. The recliner seat and back move forward when you recline. Remember that
the recliner occupant will move in the same manner as they recline. The wall-hugger
mechanism maintains the occupant’s weight over the footprint of the recliner and
operates best with the occupant seated all the way to the back of the recliner.

Recliner positions (upright, TV, and full recline)

of injury. Do not place your hands where you cannot see. To assist an occupant in opening or closing the

footrest closed before the backrest is fully upright may bend the recliner mechanism.
To move from upright to TV position:
2. Occupant should be seated entirely back in the recliner with their calves touching
the footrest.
3. Pull the mechanism release handle (A) (Figure 1) located on the outside arm
panel.
NOTE: You can only recline the recliner when you pull the mechanism release handle. You do not
need to pull the mechanism release handle to close the footrest.
To move from TV position to full recline position:
2. From TV position, cross your arms and push back using your head and shoulders.
3. If the occupant is in a weakened condition and needs help to recline; push down on
the backrest (F) (Figure 1).
To return to the TV position:
Lean forward while raising head and shoulders up to return the recliner to the TV
position.
NOTE: Do not pull on the recliner arms to assist with operation. If necessary, grasp the back of
the recliner arms and push to move into the upright position.
To return to an upright position:
1. Place recliner in TV position.
2. Press down on the footrest (B) (Figure 1) until it returns to the locked position.
Operating instructions
Trendelenburg
WARNING: Always fully recline the recliner before you activate the Trendelenburg release bar to
reach the Trendelenburg position.
WARNING: Do not perform CPR in this recliner, the recliner surfaces may be too soft to reach proper
chest compression depth.
We recommend that operators of this recliner become thoroughly acquainted with the recliner and
the Trendelenburg option prior to its use with an occupant.

To actuate the Trendelenburg option:
1. Place the recliner into full recline position (See recliner positions).
3. Grasp the push handle (G) (Figure 2),
then squeeze and hold the
Trendelenburg release bar (H)
(Figure 2).
4. Lower the recliner and occupant to the
desired degree of Trendelenburg
position.
5. Release the Trendelenburg release
bar to lock the recliner in
Trendelenburg position.
To return from Trendelenburg position:
1. Squeeze and hold the Trendelenburg release bar (H) (Figure 2) as you lift the
recliner back to the full recline position.
2. Release the Trendelenburg release bar to lock the backrest in position.
3. Actuate into any of the standard recliner positions according to the operating
instructions.

Recliner options and accessories
Foot tray option
The foot tray pulls out from under the recliner footrest. Occupants should always be advised that
the foot tray has been extended. Foot tray should be stowed when not in use.
To fully extend the foot tray:
1. Grasp the foot tray from under the recliner footrest.
2. Pull the foot tray out from the front of the recliner until it stops.
NOTE: The foot tray should be fully extended to use as a step.
To stow the foot tray:
1. Lift up on the front edge of the tray.
2. Slide foot tray back under the recliner as far as it will go.
Central locking casters option
CAUTION: Do not use the push handle to raise the front casters off the floor while an occupant is
seated in the recliner. This may damage the recline mechanism.
The central locking caster feature enables the user to lock three casters (two front and back right)
with pressure from their foot.
To lock or unlock the casters:
•Press the red side of the pedal to lock the casters.
•Press the black side of the pedal to unlock the casters.
NOTE: Press down on the gray tab on the back left caster to set the steer lock.
Single Lock Casters option
•To set the brake, use your foot to press down on the gray tabs on the front two
casters.
•To release the brake, use your foot to lift the gray tabs on the front two casters.
•To set the steer lock, use your foot to press down on the black tab on the back left
caster.

Transfer arm option
WARNING: Always lock the transfer arm when transferring an occupant or disinfecting the recliner to
avoid the risk of injury. Occupant may be able to operate the transfer arm if not locked, which may cause
bodily harm.
The transfer arm allows the operator to perform a pivot or lateral transfer.
To open the transfer arm:
2. Push down on the transfer arm while you press the transfer arm release button (D)
(Figure 1) to unlock.
3. Grasp the transfer arm from the front and rotate back until it stops.
To close the transfer arm:
1. Grasp the transfer arm and rotate forward into the locked position.
2. Push down on the transfer arm until you hear it click into place.
3. Always pull up on the transfer arm after being placed into locked position to ensure
proper lock.
IV pole/bracket
Adjustable with infinite height positions. IV pole has two hooks. Max load per hook is 10 lb (4.54
kg).
To adjust the IV pole height:
2. Push up on the top black collar (J) (Figure 2) to release lock and adjust the IV pole
to desired height.
3. Release the top black collar to lock the IV pole into place.
NOTE: Do not twist the lower black ring (K) (Figure 2) to raise and lower the IV pole.
To remove or install the IV pole:
1. To remove the IV pole, twist the IV pole (L) (Figure 2) and remove.
2. To install the IV pole, insert the IV pole into IV bracket twist to lock.
Cushion wedge
The removable cushion wedge provides additional surface for arm support. The cushion wedge
also helps to close the gap between the inside of recliner arms for smaller occupants.
Head pillow
The removable pillow offers head support.
Head protector flap

The head protector flap is a preventative maintenance accessory that can preserve the life of your
recliner. This flap features a snap close design that goes over the head portion of the
backrest. This can save your backrest from hair products and oils, as the head flap is designed to
be placed where the occupant would rest their head.
Foley hook
WARNING: Do not use foley hook for restraint purposes.
The foley hook is located on both sides of your recliner (C) (Figure 1). Use your finger to lift the
foley hook to hang item. Max load is 15 lb (6.8 kg).
General maintenance and care of recliners
WARNING: Always place recliner in an upright position or a fully reclined position when cleaning or
maintaining your recliner to avoid the risk of injury. This recliner moves easily without an occupant in the
recliner and may create pinch points when not fully reclined or upright.
WARNING: Direct skin contact with visibly soiled permeable material may increase risk of infection.
WARNING: Always disinfect support surfaces between occupants to avoid risk of cross
contamination.
WARNING: Never clean or maintain your recliner while it is occupied. Doing so may cause harm to the
occupant.

Moving parts of the recliner do not need to be lubricated. Refer to the quarterly preventative
maintenance checklist for further recliner care.
It is recommended that the underside of the recliners be checked periodically for waste materials
that have fallen under the recliner.

Quarterly preventative maintenance checklist
Remove product from service before you perform the preventative maintenance inspection. You
may need to perform preventative maintenance checks more often based on your level of product

Check all items listed during quarterly preventative maintenance for all products:
1. Make sure both springs are present and attached.
2. Replace the arm cap if it looks worn or dirty.
3. Survey for compromised upholstered parts.
4. Make sure footrest is flush with seat.
5. Operate the transfer arm, make sure there is nothing hindering the transfer arm
from latching.
6. Release handle releases.
7. Operate the Trendelenburg release bar, make sure the bar falls freely.
8. Put the recliner in the full Trendelenburg position and verify position holds.
9. Verify red thumb knobs are present and secure at backrest.
10. All casters are secure and roll.
11. All brakes work properly.
•Do not use patch kits on upholstered items, this may cause an infection control
issue.
•Do not lubricate any part of the recliner, this may cause unintended operational use
results.

General cleaning and disinfecting
WARNING: Direct skin contact with visibly soiled permeable material may increase risk of infection.
CAUTION: Do not use cleaners or disinfectants marked “for hard non-porous surfaces only” unless
approved by the upholstery manufacturer, to avoid surface deterioration.
CAUTION: Always pretest any cleaning method or agent on a small hidden area to make sure the
method and agent does not cause product damage.
For cleaning/disinfecting precautions please refer to the preventative maintenance checklist or the
appropriate textile manufacturer. You may contact your representative to find your textile
manufacturer.
To properly disinfect arm caps, ensure the arm caps remain visibly wet with disinfectant for a
minimum of 6 minutes.
Regular cleaning
Remove excess soil with a damp non-abrasive cloth. Regular and careful cleaning of the upholstery
with water and a mild soap can prevent hardening and embrittlement of the upholstered parts.
Rinse all cleaning agents thoroughly with water and dry with a soft cloth.
