Preface
Congratulations on the purchase of your new POCSAG/ERMES pager. We are sure that you will
appreciate its high performance and user friendly features. The operating concept together with its built-in
help information for each icon ensures that your pager is extremely simple to use. Despite of its easy
operation, it is recommended that you should read this manual carefully.
Swissphone's alphanumeric pagers can be configured with many different options. The user manual
covers the most used standard settings. Depending on the programmed configuration of the pager, the
behaviour can differ from the user manual.
We are convinced, you will always find the pager to be your loyal companion.
Expressions
Address: In this user manual the term ‘address’ is used for the RIC-Code of the pager. Each calling
number is related to an address which is programmed into the pager

1 Putting your pager into operation
1.1 Power supply

1.2 Inserting the battery
•Pull the locking slider (1) outwards.
•Remove the battery cover (2) by sliding it in the direction of the arrow.
•Insert the battery (3) and ensure correct polarity (+/-).
•The pager switches on automatically (display, vibrator, beep).
•Replace the cover (2).
•Push the locking slider (1) back in gently.
•Set the clock (see section 6.3.1)

2 Standby mode
In standby mode the pager shows its status with four corresponding status symbols. The following status
symbols are implemented:
Display 1
Pager on: The pager is ready for receiving messages.
New message: The pager has received a new message.
Out of range: If the pager cannot receive any signal, the out of range symbol will be on
continuously.
Low battery: To avoid that the battery voltage reaches a critical value, this symbol indicates
that the battery should be changed or the rechargeable battery should be
charged.

3 Status display
After setting date/time or alarm time, the pager shows the status display for a few seconds and then
changes to standby mode. The status display includes the following:
3.1 Display Illumination
To illuminate the display, press and hold middle key (2) for 2 sec.
Press the middle key (2) again for 2 sec, to turn off the illumination. Upon automatically changing back to
standby mode, the illumination is also turned off.

4 Operating levels
Basically the pager can be operated in two different modes, the simple and comprehensive mode. The
simple mode avoids operating errors made by untrained users or during stress situations, whereby the
comprehensive mode allows direct access to all menu functions of the pager.
4.1 Simple mode
If the pager changes back to the stand-by mode, it automatically provides the simple mode, if activated. In
this mode the 3 keys are programmed with a slight action delay in order to help avoiding operating errors.
The 3 keys have the following functions:
Upper key (1): In standby mode: As long as this key is pressed the status is displayed.
While reading a message: This key allows to scroll up within the message.
Middle key (2): The latest received message is displayed. It is also displayed, if it has already been
read before. If several unread messages are stored in the message folder, the latest
message is displayed first, followed by the remaining unread messages. After some
seconds the pager falls back into the standby mode.
Lower key (3): In standby mode: As long as this key is pressed, the logo or the identification text
appears.
While reading a message: This key allows to scroll down within the message of more
than 4 lines. If a message has been read, the next message is displayed.
4.2 Comprehensive Mode
By pressing the upper and the lower key simultaneously for at least 3 seconds the pager changes to the
comprehensive operation mode. In the comprehensive operation mode all functions of the pager are
accessible through several menus and submenus.
If the pager is not configured for simple mode, the pager always works in the comprehensive operation
mode. In this case pressing the middle key in the standby mode displays the menu. All other key functions
remain as it is described in chapter 4.1.
The paragraphs below describe the comprehensive operation mode in details.

5 Main menu
The main menu is divided in four areas. The key icons, menu icons and function (submenu) icons as well
as the function description.
5.1 Key icons
The three key icons on the left side of the display describe the function of the upper key (1), middle key (2)
and lower key (3). These functions will depend upon the menu selected.
The following functions are possible:
•Move cursor left or right
•Scroll up and down
•Choose or quit the function
5.2 Menu icons
The icons in the first line of the display represent the available menus. The functions belonging to the
appropriate menus are described in the next chapter. Pressing the upper key moves the selection of the
menu to the right or to the left. The key icon shows the direction of the selection. Pressing the upper key
for more than 2 seconds changes the direction.
The icon of the chosen menu is displayed inverse.

5.3 Function icons
The icons on the last line represent the available functions of the chosen menu on the first line. The
chosen icon is displayed inverse. Pressing the lower key (3) moves the selection to the right or to the left
according to the arrow on the icon. Pressing the lower key more than 2 seconds changes also the
direction.
Each function is explained by a text in the middle of the display.

6 Description of menu functions
On the main menu screen (see chapter 5), a menu and an appropriate function are selected with the
upper and lower keys. The chosen icons are displayed inverse.
Pressing the middle key (2) activates the selected function and its icon is displayed on the left side, next to
the middle key.
6.1 Message menu
6.1.1 General
If a function is chosen, the display shows the following main information.
The lowest line starts on the left with the icon M for (single) message folder. As long as this icon is
inverted, either message folders, single messages or the icon S can be selected. The sign S stands for
safe folder. The first line shows the name of the message folder selected and the cursor on the bottom
line is positioned on the message folder ‘fire alarm’. All messages not belonging to a message folder are
stored in the single message folder.
On the right side of the safe message folder S follow the message folders continued by the single
messages. These can have the following icons:

If on the lowest line more than 11 message folders or messages have to be displayed, scrolling arrows
appear at the bottom of the display. If more than 15 message folders and messages are stored, a
horizontal scroll bar appears. (Arrows and scroll bar only appear, if the pager has the display type "display
1", see chapter 2.)
To move the cursor from one message to the other or from one message folder to the other, press the
lower key (3). If this key is pressed for more than 2 seconds, the moving direction is changed. The actual
position is indicated by a cursor.
If the cursor is located at a message folder,
•on the first line, the name of the folder appears.
•on the second line, the total number of messages in the corresponding folder is displayed
•on the third line, the number of new messages in the corresponding folder is displayed

If the cursor is located at the symbol of a message,
•on the first line, the time and date of receipt of the message is displayed
•on the second line, the address name is displayed
•on the third line, the first line of the message text is displayed
Depending on the configuration of the pager, the first row (time and date) is not displayed on receipt of a
message. To display this header, the upper key (1) has to be pressed.
6.1.2 Read message
With the lower key (3) a folder or a single message can be selected. Press the middle key (2) to enter into
a message folder or into a single message.
For message folders or messages with more than 2 lines, the upper (1) and lower keys (2) are used to
scroll up and down. Scrolling of very long messages or folders is done in steps of 4 lines. The end of a
message or a message folder is signalled by a mini beep and/or vibration.
If a folder or a message has more than 4 lines, arrows and / or a vertical scroll bar appear on the right side
of the "display 1". On "display 2" the arrows appear on the left side.
To return to the main menu, press the middle key (2).
6.1.3 Delete message(s)
This function allows the deletion of all messages of a message folder or of each single message. To do
this, move the cursor to a folder or a message and confirm the selection by pressing the middle key (2).
Before the deletion is executed, the question ‘Are You sure?’ arises. Confirm with the middle key(2) to
delete the message(s), or the upper key to cancel the operation.
To delete all single messages, select the single message folder M.
To return to the main menu, press the upper key (2).
6.1.4 Save message
Select the message to be saved by means of the lower key (3). Press the middle key (2) to confirm the
saving operation. The message is now stored in the safe message folder and cannot be deleted by new
incoming messages anymore. If the safe message folder is full, old messages have to be deleted to gain
space for a new message to be saved. Only single messages, not belonging to a message folder, can be
saved.
To return to the main menu, press the upper key (1).
6.1.5 Switch RIC on and off
Each address (RIC) can be switched on and off. If an address is switched off, incoming messages are
ignored. Switching off of RICs has no impact on power consumption.

6.2 Alert group
If a new message has been received, the symbol !appears and the pager alerts as described in the
sections below. Basically there is a differentiation between priority calls and non priority calls. The setting
of the alerts allows different acoustic and vibrating alarm dependant on the priority of the message. A
different alarm scheme can be configured for each address.
Each alarm can be stopped by pressing any key. To configure the alarm, select with the upper key (2) the
alarm menu in the main menu. With the lower key (3) choose the desired alert type and confirm it by
pressing the middle key (2). The selected alert mode is indicated on the status display.
6.2.1 Loud alert
Message without priority: Loud acoustic alarm and vibration (if turned on)
Message with priority: Loud acoustic alarm with double alarm time and vibration.
6.2.2 Mini beep
Message without priority: Acoustic alarm only with mini beep and vibration (if turned on)
Message with priority: Silent vibrator pre alarm, followed by loud double time alarm.
6.2.3 Silent alert
Message without priority: No acoustic alarm (beeper is turned off), only with vibration (if turned on)
Message with priority: Silent vibrator pre alarm, followed by loud double time alarm.
6.2.4 Vibrator on/off
Message without priority: Vibration (if turned on).
Message with priority: Vibrator is always turned on
6.2.5 Light on/off
If the light is activated, the background illumination of the display is turned on automatically on receipt of
new messages. Upon falling back to the standby mode, the illumination is turned off again.
6.2.6 Set alert pattern
The acoustic alarm can be set for each individual address to silent, mini beep or one of 16 different sound
patterns. Press the upper key (1) to select the address and press the lower key (3) to choose the sound
patterns. A sample tune of the chosen alert is played. Confirm the selection with the middle key (2)
6.2.7 Acoustic out of range
To turn on the acoustic out of range alarm, select in the main menu the corresponding function and
confirm it with the middle key (2).
To turn off the acoustic out of range alarm, repeat the above description.
6.3 Time menu
6.3.1 Set time
In the main menu choose the time menu with the upper key (1) and the function ‘Set time’ with the lower
key (3), and confirm it with the middle key (1). Set the time with the upper(1) and lower key (3). Each
entry (hours →minutes →year →month → day →weekday) has to be confirmed with the middle key (2).
After having entered all data, the actual time and date are shown on the status display.
On the DE 800, the time is usually set over the air by the service provider.

6.3.2 Set alarm clock
Setting the alarm clock is done the same way as setting the time. To turn the alarm on (or off), the same
steps have to be repeated as during setting, however without changing time and date. The alarm function
is repeated daily.
6.4 Special menu
6.4.1 Switch off
To set the pager out of operation, select the special menu in the main menu with the upper key (1) and
with the lower key (3) the function ‘Switch off’, and confirm the selection with the middle key (2). Before
the operation is completed, the question ‘Are You sure?’ appears. Press the middle key (2) to switch off
the pager or press the upper key (1) to cancel the operation.
To switch the pager on again, press any key for some seconds. The logo or an identification text is
displayed, the vibrator is activated for a short time and the background illumination is turned on. At the end
of the start up procedure, a control beep can be heard. The pager displays the main menu or the newest
message if the simple mode is configured. Afterwards the pager changes over to the standby mode.
6.4.2 Bold font on/off or choose character set
To display messages in an easy legible bold font, choose the special menu in the main menu with the
upper key (1) and with the lower key (3) the function ‘Bold font on/off’, and confirm it with the middle key
(2).
To change back to the normal font, just repeat the same steps.
In some cases the function is used to change the character set.
6.4.3 Selecting the menu language
Select the function menu language in the special menu and confirm it with the middle key (2). Press the
lower key to select one of two languages. Press the upper key (3) to return to the main menu.
6.4.4 Status information
To display the status information, select the function status information in the special menu and confirm it
with the middle key (2).(See chapter 3).

Caution:
The above listed chargers can only be used for pagers with rechargeable batteries such as NiCd or NiMH.
Do not insert a pager with an alkaline battery.
For DE516C Ex pagers only Swisspone Telecom in Switzerland is allowed to change the
rechargeable battery.

Reset pager
With the following function you have the possibility to reset the pager. Please proceed as follows:
- Remove battery
- Insert battery again and press the upper and lower button at the same time
- In the middle the text 'Factory reset?' is displayed
- Press the middle button, if you wish to reset the pager
Under normal circumstances you will never need this function. Nevertheless if the pager shall 'hang', you
can reset the pager to make it work properly again.
