1.2 Purpose
This manual describes all the necessary information required to undertake all the necessary service
operations on the DV09A UHF, such as changing the reception frequency, functional checks of
individual circuit blocks, etc.

2 Tuning Frequency Change Instructions
2.1 Requirements
The newly selected frequency must lie within the frequency band for which the device was set up at
the factory.
2.2 Retuning
2.2.1 Measurement Set-up

You can use a measurement set-up using the TK500 alternatively.
2.2.2 Preparation of the pager for the tuning frequency
Prepare the measurement set-up as shown in chapter 2.3.1: Connect the 1.5 Volt supply, the RF
source, the interface device, the CRO and the frequency counter (shown as a single unit) with the
service adapter.
Open the case, remove the circuit board and insert it - connected via the testprint - into the
mounting of the service adapter.
Switch on the pager
Activate the pager's test mode
Via PSW: Tools -> POCSAG -> Radio mode -> Switched on
Via buttons: Press the Scroll button while inserting the battery and Test «POCSAG» ->
chose mode tuning

Tune the antenna circuit
with C2
If requested, turn on the speaker by switching to «Monitor on».
Make sure that the reception frequency is set to fTuning.
2.2.3 Settings
RF generator: fRF = tuning frequency
Deviation = 4.5 kHz for 25 kHz, 4.0 Hz for 20 kHz and 2.5 kHz for 12.5 kHz
channel spacing
RF level: must be steadily reduced during the adjustment
KO: Time / DIV: 0.5ms
V / DIV: 20mV
2.2.4 Wired RF tuning
The RF level must be reduced periodically during the adjustment. It should stay clearly above the
upper noise limit and not be allowed below this level. This can be recognised if the IF amplitude
remains unchanged, even though the RF level is raised.
1. Tune the control voltage (on TP30) with C40 on the digital multimeter to 1.3V +/- 0.1V
2. Tune to maximum signal amplitude with C2 (antenna circuit).
3. Tune C14 first and then C11 to the max. signal amplitude (tune band-pass).
4. Tune to maximum signal amplitude with C11, C14, C2 (in this order) again (fine calibration).
2.2.5 Antenna comparison free field
Both prints (basis- and sub-print) will be reconnected and inserted into the front case. A special tuning
cover with a hole above the antenna trimmer will be used as a backplane. It is possible to do the
tuning without a backplane, but it will not be accurate.
Insert a battery and turn on the pager into the test mode. Set the mode to «free» to turn the radio «on»
and to activate monitoring. The demodulated signal will be signalized by the speaker. See chapter
9.3.1 for further information.
Insert the pager into the TEM cell and tune the antenna trimmer C2 to maximum signal quality. Tune
the level of the RF generator to an optimum value to hear the LF signal through the hissing.
2.3 Sensitivity Test
To get reproducible results, the device is evaluated in the TEM cell. Place the completely assembled
receiver with its display upside down and its antenna in direction to the signal feeding (as shown
below). The test is configured to prove whether the DV09A possesses the following call sensitivities:

The limiting values of the sensitivity have to be reached at the lower as well as at the higher test
frequency.

3 Function testing
3.1 Measurement set-up

Put the device into operation with the test set-up shown below. The basis- und the sub-print will be
connected to the test-print. The speech-print (TTS module) can lie above the basis- or sub-print. It can
be omitted for several tests. The 1.50 Volt feeding is done via GND and BAT+ at the charging
contacts. RF and LF will be decoupled by the testing wire. A CRO with a frequency counter will be
connected to TP262 or TP265 (IF signal) via a low capacity probe.
The 5 pin DIN connector will be plugged into the programming device, which is connected to a PC via
RS232.
The LF signal can be measured via the LF connector.
The 450 kHz signal will be decoupled at the IF connector via a low capacity amplifier. Feed the
amplifier via the 5VDC connector.
3.2 PSWplus tool (Service)
When you press «Tools» in the PSWplus (service) software, the following menu appears:

3.2.1 General
Deletes all messages
All messages will be deleted
Reset
A reset has the same effect as if the battery is removed and reinserted. A software reset shuts down
the µC and performs a reset.
Number of programmed IDEA and OAP keys
The number of programmed OAP and IDEA keys will be read out.
System time
The pagers time can be set at the push of a button. The system time of your PC will be used.

3.2.2 Module Test
Backlight
The LCD backlight can either be switched «on» or «off». «Automatic» means that the backlight will be
switched on according to the predefined times.
Display
Predefined patterns can be shown on the display for testing purposes.
Attention: While the pager is in ECO mode, the LCD patterns will not be shown on the display. Press
any button to leave the ECO mode and to see the LCD patterns.
Alarm LED
The alarm LED can either be swiched «on» or «off». «Automatic» means that the LED is activated
according to the pagers programming.
Beeper
The programmed beep patterns will be played in their corresponding length and volume.
TTS library
Gong (volume_prehear)
1kHz tone for 3 seconds (test signal to measure amplification and distortion)
Volume: Setting the volume from 1, 2, 3 to 8 (6 is nominal volume)
Vibration
The vibration can be switched «on» or «off». «Automatic» means that vibration is activated according
to the pagers programming.
3.2.3 Measurements
Battery voltage
The command "read battery voltage" induces the µC to measure the battery voltage. The displayed
voltage corresponds to the digital value of the A/D converter without correction. A correction can be
calculated based on the impressed voltage and the readout value. Enter this correction in mV and
press «Execute» to store it. The µC will use this value for all corrections.

The correction is: 48 mV -15 mV
The voltage measurement calibration for the DV09A must be done at a battery voltage of 1.300 V.
Keep an eye on the feeding connection during the calibration process. Make sure that the TTS module
is switched off because the high current will distort the measurement.
µC Clock
Main Clock to TP on: A downloaded frequency of the µC main oscillator will be putted out on TP
140.
Main Clock to TP off: The output of the downloaded frequency of the µC main clock on TP 140 will
be turned off.
Main Clock normal: The µC swings on his nominal frequency for testing purposes.
Main Clock shifted: The µC swings on an approximately +200ppm higher frequency for testing
purposes.
Sub Clock to TP on: A downloaded frequency of the µC sub clock will be putted out on TP 140.
Sub Clock to TP off: The output of the downloaded frequency of the µC sub clocks on TP 140 will
be turned off.

The measured frequency of both modes «Main Clock to TP on» and «Main Clock normal» will be
entered into the column «µC frequency: normal [kHz]».
The measured frequency of both modes «Main Clock to TP on» and «Main Clock shifted» will be
entered into the column «µC frequency [kHz], shifted».
Press «Execute» to store these frequencies into the EEPROM. The PSWplus calculates possible
interferences for all networks (customer frequencies). The µC clock will be delayed by +200ppm in
critical cases.
3.2.4 POCSAG
Radio Monitor
The received data or RF will be signalled through the speaker if «Monitor on» is activated.
Radio Mode
Switched off: For testing purposes the reception is turned off permanently.
Switched on: For testing purposes (tuning) the reception is turned on permanently.
Attention: Call decoding is not available in this mode.
Economizer: The reception is in Eco mode. The baud rate is set to the programmed
value of the network frequency 1.
Reception frequency
Normal mode: The receiver operates as in normal mode. The frequency is set to the
value of the current network (profile). When two different networks are
active in the current profile (scan mode), the receiver operates in scan
mode.
Lower bandwidth: For testing purposes the reception frequency is set to the lower
bandwidth. The baud rate is set to the programmed value of the
network frequency 1.
Upper bandwidth: For testing purposes the reception frequency is set to the upper
bandwidth. The baud rate is set to the programmed value of the
network frequency 1.
Frequency network x: For testing purposes the reception frequency is set to the value of the
network frequency x. The baud rate is set to the programmed value of
the network frequency x. Condition: multi-channel and network
frequency must both be programmed.
Scan mode: For testing purposes the receiver scans between the frequencies of
network one and two.
3.2.5 Adjustment of the reference oscillator
PLL reference oscillator (VHF)
Readout current value: The current value of the tuning voltage for the PLL reference oscillator
is readout. Values between 0 and 255 are possible. The tuning
voltage for the reference oscillator is calculated as follows:

Enter a new value into the column to adjust the oscillator. The corresponding voltage for this value will
be activated when you click on «Execute». The last entered and with «Execute» acknowledged value
will be programmed.
Temperature compensation (UHF)
This is about the tuning of the PLL reference oscillator. In contrast to VHF the value for UHF is not
fixed. It must be corrected because the quartz is temperature dependent.
1. Turn on or off temperature compensations
Turn off the temperature compensation first before retuning the reference oscillator.

2. Enter frequencies
For tuning purposes the frequency of the reference oscillator for the basic values 32, 96, 160 and 192
will be measured.
Approach:
Choose fixed PLL reference oscillator «32» press «write PLL value»
Measure frequency at TP35
Enter measured frequency at: «Frequency at TPxx @32 [MHz]»
Repeat this approach for the remaining three basic values.
3. Choose type of quartz
The PSW needs you to enter the type of quartz in order to calculate the temperature compensation
properly. Depending on the temperature profile the letter A, B, C or D is lasered onto the reference
quartz Q30.
«Write chart» This command calculates and programs the chart for the temperature
compensation of the PLL reference oscillator.
3.3 Service tools in PSWplus (Service)
In addition to the tools mentioned above, the following menu items are available in the service version
of the PSWplus:

3.3.1 Power Source
Up to four different power sources can be defined. The configurations 1 to 3 are fixed and predefined
for the following voltage sources:
Battery configuration 1: Dry cell alkaline
Battery configuration 2: Rechargeable battery with deep self-discharge e.g. Eneloop
Battery configuration 3: Rechargeable battery Ni-MH
Battery configuration 4: can be defined by the user:
Type: Choose between rechargeable battery and dry cell. This will influence the
charging.
Name of battery: This is the name shown in the menu if envisaged.
Capacity [mAh]: This is the nominal capacity of the rechargeable battery. The mAh counter
calculates with this capacity. This means that charging is done with a current
of 180 mA until this capacity. It will be counted backwards from this capacity
on discharge.
Judging voltage: When a new battery is inserted into the receiver, the capacity will be roughly
judged with a judging voltage. The judging is done pessimistically. A value of
1460 mV means that the counter is set to 100% when this voltage is
measured. If lower voltages are measured, the judging is lowered on a linear
basis as well. The battery alarm voltage defines 0%. This value is fixed as
follows:
Dry cell battery: 1150 mV
Rechargeable battery: 1190 mV
Self-discharge [uA]: Define the batteries self-discharge here. Make sure that you use a pessimistic
value because high temperatures or aging increases the self-discharging
process.
It is recommended that if you define the parameters of the battery configuration 4 on your own, you
should adapt the predefined values of the configurations 1 to 3 if possible.

3.3.2 RSSI calibration
Multi-channel devices operating in scan mode need the field strength value for intelligent channel
switching. The µC needs the calibration of the RSSI value to measure the field strength. Two field
strength values with one RSSI voltage value each are stored into the device. The µC makes a linear
interpolation to calculate the intermediate values.
To calibrate both basic values, place the pager into the TEM cell as shown in chapter 2.3. Send two
calibration calls with specified RF levels.
Calibration at -90 dB
Set the RF level at the TEM cell to -90 dBm
Send the call: 500D 81030307015A in testing mode to «free»
Calibration at -70 dB
Set the RF level at the TEM cell to -70 dBm
Send the call: 500D 810303070046 in testing mode to «free»
For controlling purposes the pager can be read out via PSWplus «Device information» «Tuning»
The date for both basic values are displayed.
3.3.3 Repair Number
A six digit number can be stored into every device to track service works. It can be entered and
programmed at: PSWplus «Device information» «Production» «Repair number». The code
can be both numeric and alphanumeric.

4 Basis- and sub-print measurements
The following control measurements ensure the proper operation of the pager.
4.1 BAT+
The feeding voltage must be set to 1.30 Volt for measurements.
Attention: A low-resistance connection and sufficient current load (1 A) are required.
4.2 VDD
VDD measuring at TP200
Voltage range: 2.9V < VDD < 3.12V
4.3 Battery measurement correction

The µC measures the feeding battery voltage of 1.30 Volt with the help of the integrated 2.5 Volt
reference. Enter the recognized difference into the column "mV" and click on «Execute».
Correction area: -26 mV < 2V5corr < 26 mV (see chapter 3.2 Tools, Battery voltage)
4.4 Sub clock

The clock frequency of 32.000kHz/64 (500Hz +/- 25ppm) can be measured at TP150.
Frequency area: 499.993 Hz < f500 < 500.018 Hz
4.5 Main clock normal

Measure the clock frequency of 9.8304MHz/16 (614.4kHz +/- 50 ppm) at TP150.
Write the discarded oscillator frequency into the EEPROM when changing the quartz Q101. Enter the
frequency measured at TP150 into the column «C frequency: normal [kHz]» and write it into the
pager.
Frequency area: 614.369 Hz (-50ppm) < f614 < 614.431 kHz (+50ppm)
4.6 Main-Clock shift

Measure the clock frequency of 9.8304MHz/16 at TP150. The clock frequency must be at least
190ppm above the normal main clock frequency. This demand will be tested during programming.
Write the discarded oscillator frequency into the EPROM when changing the quartz Q101. Enter the
frequency measured at TP150 into the column «C frequency: shifted [kHz]» and write it into the
pager.
Frequency area: f614_S > f614 + 190 ppm
4.7 Reference oscillator PLL
Measure the oscillator frequency at TP35.

5 Test and measurement at the speech-print
The speech-print must be seen as a complete unit by the service team. It will not be repaired. The
following tools examine the correct functionality of the speech-print:
5.1 TTS test tools

Volume: Adjust the volume 1, 2, 3 to 8 (level 6 is the nominal volume)

Language/Voice: Choose one of the available voices for speech output.
Attention: The voice will not be programmed. It is only a pre-selection for
testing purposes. You can program the voice via:

Pitch: Select the pitch of speech
Speak words apart: The entered text string will not be interpreted as a whole sentence. Every
word is spoken individually.
The programmed user dictionary is used while testing the speech output. Every voice has its own user
dictionary.

5.2 Current TTS
The pagers current consumption is high when the TTS module is activated. The listed currents are
valid for TTS modules with the print number 0204516.
TTS module switched on and in sleep: IBAT+ = 60 mA
TTS module speaking: IBAT+ = 250…350 mA, peaks up to 600 mA
(depending on the volume)
5.3 TTS on/off
If a message activates the speech output, the TTS module will be switched on and the TTS software
will be started within 1.8 seconds. After the start-up the TTS module remains active for 10 seconds.
After that the module is switched off via /ON_TTS and FET T401.
6 Changing channel spacing
To change channel spacing, replace F261 on the sub-print.

7 Changing the frequency band
The pager will be equipped for a special frequency band during production. The service is not
intended to change the frequency band.

8 Mode of operation
8.1 Normal mode
When you insert a new battery into the DV09A, the receiver is switched on and will run in normal
mode. The same will happen when you press and hold the confirmation button while the pager is
switched off. This is the standard mode of operation. Reed the manual for the corresponding device
functions.
8.1.1 Additional information about the ECO mode
This is a special mode within the normal mode of operation. It allows improvements of the autonomy
(battery life) and the sensitivity. These improvements are achieved by switching off the display
including its drivers. The clock and the symbols are visible again after you press a button.
The Eco mode can be switched on or off in the menu (if configured). Do not get mixed up with «Radio»
= eco. For better battery autonomy the reception is switched on and off permanently during normal
mode (Economizer).
8.2 Hidden menu
The hidden menu appears when you press and hold the right button «Execute» while inserting the
battery.
8.2.1 IDEA reset
All IDEA keys will be deleted.
8.2.2 Status
A detailed status of your pager will be displayed. This menu item can be integrated into the regular
menu in normal mode.
8.2.3 Delete all
All messages will be deleted.

8.3 Test mode
The test mode is also known as «tuning mode». The test menu appears when you press and hold the
left button «Select» while inserting the battery.
8.3.1 Test Pocsag
You can choose between three different modes: «tuning», «verify» and «free».

Tuning mode
In tuning mode the RF is switched on permanently. The device can be adjusted as described in
chapter 2.2. The following parameters are fixed:
frequency = tuning frequency
radio = on
No messages can be evaluated in this mode.
Verify mode
In verify mode the pager can be checked on the client frequency (short alerting, no call suppression).
The following parameters are fixed:

RIC = programmed

Free mode

upper: Tuning frequency + 1MHz
