•Neverallowchildrentooperatethecuttingunits.Donot
allowadultstooperatethetractionunitorcuttingunits
withoutproperinstruction.Onlytrainedoperatorswho
havereadthismanualshouldoperatethecuttingunits.
•Neveroperatethecuttingunitswhenundertheinuence
ofdrugsoralcohol.
•Keepallshieldsandsafetydevicesinplace.Ifashield,
safetydevice,ordecalisillegibleordamaged,repairor
replaceitbeforeoperationiscommenced.Alsotighten
anyloosenuts,bolts,andscrewstoensurethatthecutting
unitisinsafeoperatingcondition.
•Alwayswearsubstantialshoes.Donotoperatethecutting
unitwhilewearingsandals,tennisshoes,sneakers,or
shorts.Also,donotwearloose-ttingclothingwhich
couldgetcaughtinmovingparts.Alwayswearlongpants
andsubstantialshoes.Wearingsafetyglasses,safetyshoes,
andahelmetisadvisable,andrequiredbysomelocal
ordinancesandinsuranceregulations.
•Removealldebrisorotherobjectsthatmightbepicked
upandthrownbythecutting-unitblades.Keepall
bystandersawayfromthemowingarea.
•Ifthebladesstrikeasolidobjectorthecuttingunit
vibratesabnormally,stopandshuttheengineoff.Check
cuttingunitfordamagedparts.Repairanydamagebefore
restartingandoperatingthecuttingunit.
•Lowerthecuttingunitstothegroundandremovethe
keyfromtheignitionswitchwheneverthemachineisleft
unattended.
•Besurethatthecuttingunitsandgroomersareinsafe
operatingconditionbykeepingnuts,bolts,andscrews
tight.
•Removethekeyfromtheignitionswitchtoprevent
accidentalstartingoftheenginewhenservicing,adjusting,
orstoringthemachine.
•Lightningcancausesevereinjuryordeath.Iflightning
isseenorthunderisheardinthearea,donotoperate
themachine;seekshelter.
•Performonlythosemaintenanceinstructionsdescribedin
thismanual.Ifmajorrepairsareeverneededorassistance

Note:Makesurethatalltheblackplastictiestraps
havebeenremovedfromthegroomerassemblies.

Operation
Groomingisperformedintheturfcanopyabovethesoil
level.Groomingpromotesverticalgrowthofgrassplants,
reducesgrainandseversstolonsproducingadenserturf.
Groomingproducesamoreuniformandtighterplaying
surfaceforfasterandtrueractionofthegolfball.
Verticuttingisamoreaggressivecultivationtechnique
designedtoremovethatchbycuttingthroughtheturfcanopy
andintothethatch/matlayer.Groomingshouldnotbe
consideredareplacementforverticutting.Verticuttingis
generallyamorerigorousandperiodictreatmentthatcan
temporarilydamagetheplayingsurface,whilegroomingisa
routineandgentlertreatmentdesignedtomanicuretheturf.

Groomingbrushesareamorerecentdevelopmentwhich
aredesignedtobelessintrusivethanconventionalgrooming
bladeswhenadjustedtolightlycontacttheturfcanopy.
Brushingmaybemorebenecialfortheultra-dwarfcultivars,
sincethesegrasstypeshavemoreofauprightgrowthpattern
anddonotllinthatwellthroughhorizontalgrowth.
Brushes,however,caninjureleaftissueiftheyaresetto
penetratetoodeeplyintothecanopy.
Groomingissimilartoverticuttinginitsrunnercutting
action.Groomingbladeshowever,shouldneverpenetrate
thesoillikeverticuttingordethatching.Groomerblades
arespacedclosertogetherandareusedmoreoftenthan
verticutterssothattheyaremoreeffectiveincuttingrunners
andremovingthatch.
Becausegroominginjuresleaftissuetosomedegree,itshould
beavoidedduringperiodsofhighstress.Coolseasonspecies
suchascreepingbentgrassandannualbluegrassshouldnot
begroomedduringhightemperature(andhighhumidity)
periodsinmidsummer.
Itisdifculttomakespecicrecommendationsonthe
useofgroomingreelsbecausesomanyvariablesaffectthe
performanceofgrooming,including:
•Thetimeoftheyear(thegrowingseason)andweather
pattern
•Thegeneralconditionofeachfairway
•Thefrequencyofgrooming/cutting—bothhowmany
cuttingsperweekandhowmanypassespercutting
•Theheight-of-cutsettingonthemainreel
•Theheight/depthsettingonthegroomingreel
•Howlongthegroomingreelhasbeeninuse
