This Service Manual is intended to facilitate installation, trouble-
shooting and repair of the UBI EasyCoder 501 series of printers in
theversionsdeliveredatthedateofpublishing.Earlierversionsare
generally not described in this manual, but the on-going product
improvement can be followed in the Printer Technical Bulletins
from UBI PTC AB.
This Service Manual is supplemented by the following types of

Pleasenotethattheoperationsdescribedinthismanualonlyshould
be carried out by skilled and authorized personnel with proper
training and full understanding of written English. The printers
contain wires and circuits with 115/230V AC voltage, which
implies the risk of electrical shock. Moving parts may also cause
harm, if incorrectly manipulated.
Itisassumedthatthereaderpossessesreasonableskillsinmechan-
ics and electronics and is familiar with the UBI Fingerprint
programming language and its related standard application pro-
grams. It is also assumed that the reader has access to the standard
tools of an electronics workshop.

Identification The EasyCoder 501 printers come in three different main models, which easily can be identified by their external appearance.
EasyCoder 501
has a single Print button on its front panel.
EasyCoder 501 E (Enhanced)
has a setup keyboard with 22 programmable keys.

Open the right-hand door. Here you can easily see if the printer is
fitted with any of the following options or accessories:

IMPORTANT PRINTHEAD AND RIBBON INFORMATION
The use of any thermal transfer ribbons, other than those supplied by UBI, will invalidate
the printhead warranty. UBI thermal transfer ribbons are engineered specifically for this printhead.
The quality of thermal and thermal transfer media supplies in this printer is also of great importance
for the quality of printing bar codes and a long life of the printhead. UBI has carefully matched the
paper we recommend/provide to the needs of this printer. We therefore strongly advise of using
only UBI recommended/provided supplies to ensure a high quality printing.

A Paper Cutter Unit is easily recognized by the extension on the
printer'sfront,wherethecutterreplacesthefronthatch(seechapter
12).
By opening the front hatch (or the optional cutter unit fitted in its
place), you can check if the printer is fitted with a Memory Card
Adapter(seechapter13)and/oraLabel-TakenSensor(seechapter
11).

Finally, you may want to inspect the electronics compartment. To
do so, you will have to remove the left-hand cover plate.
Forsafetyreasons,werecommendthatyouturnofftheprinter
and remove the power cord first.
(All high-voltage wires are insulated, but could be damaged and
should therefore be inspected at service).
Using a #T10 Torx screwdriver, remove the four screws at the
bottomofthecoverplateandthefourscrewsalongtheupperedge,
hidden under the right-hand cover.
In the electronics compartment you may check, e.g.:
• Type of CPU-Board fitted?
•UBI Fingerprint EPROM version?
• Configuration EPROM type?
• Optional ROM-expansion EPROMs fitted?
• Correct type of GAL circuits?
• Optional Real-Time Clock circuit (RTC) fitted?
• Type of interface on "uart1:"?
• Optional interface board fitted?
• Type of interface(s) on interface board?

The printhead density can be checked in two ways:
• Inspectthe labelstuckontotheouter sideoftheprinthead, which
gives information on part number and date of manufacture.
- 8 dots/mm printheads have part number 1-010010-xx
- 11.81 dots/mm printhead have part number 1-010003-xx.
• Ifthe printer is working, youcan print Test Label#1in either the
Test Mode (see chapter 25), in the Setup Mode (see Appendix 1
or the Technical Manual), or in UBI Shell (see UBI Shell Startup
Manuals.
If the printer is working and possible startup program can be
interrupted, the type of program in the printer can be identified.
Connect printer and computer, open a suitable communication
program,andstartuptheprinterintheUBIFingerprint'simmediate
mode.The instructionsFILES"rom:",FILES "ram:" andFILES "card1:"
allows you to check what files the various parts of the printer's
memory contain. The statements FONTS and IMAGES can be used
forthesamepurposeregardingfontsandimages.UsetheVERSION$
function to check version of the UBI Fingerprint software.
The UBI Fingerprint utility program PRSETUP.PRG allows you to
view the current setup values on the screen and also to produce a
printout copy. You can also check the setup in the Setup Mode or
Test Mode, or by means of UBI Shell.
Iftheprinterdoesnotwork,youcangetsomecluesfromthelabels
ontheEPROMpackages.Youmayalsoneedtointerviewtheuser.

2.1
Front Themouldedfrontpartisattachedto thecentre-linewallbymeans
of four #T20 screws and to the bottom plate by two #T20 screws.
The front moulding is provided with holes for mounting a cutter
connector (4-pin female DIN-type) and a memory card adapter.
At the top part of the front moulding, there is a cavity for the
keyboard/display assy. This assembly is affixed by means of two
grubscrewswhichcanbeloosenedusinga2mmhexagonwrench.

Display/Keyboard Thekeyboard/displayassy.isconnectedtoP-603attheupperright
corner of the CPU-board via a 20-p flat cable. This cable must be
disconnected before the keyboard/display can be removed.
The keyboard/display must be manipulated carefully when it is
liftedout of its cavity. Donot use any force!Ifthe assembly seems
tobestuck,opentheright-handdoorandremovetheleft-handcover
to check that the grub screws do not interfere with the brackets.
We also recommend you to open the right-hand door and remove
theleft-handcoverbeforeyoustarttofitthekeyboard/displayassy.

brackets with the grub screws.
Thekeyboard/display assy. consistsof a platewith two brackets,a
self-adhesive keyboard, an interchangeable slide, and a keyboard
interface pcb. with a 2 ×16 character LCD and three LED's. The
keyboard is connected to P-3 on the interface pcb. via a semi-
transparentcablerunningthroughaslotintheplate.Thecabletothe
CPU board is permanently affixed to the interface pcb.
The contrast of the LCD display can be adjusted by means of the
potentiometerWR-1ontheCPUboard.The potentiometer can be
accessedviaaholeintherearplate,nexttothecommunicationport
"uart1:",see chapter4.2.The displayshouldbeadjustedaccording
to the prevailing light conditions when viewed from a normal
working position.

Slides The slide can be removed through a slot at the right side of the
keyboard using a small pair of pliers. The slide can be replaced by
another one, e.g. to adapt the printer for a certain language or
application. Presently, there are three different slides with English
text – one for each main model, as shown below.

3. HATCHES AND DOORS
3.1
Right-Hand Door The right-hand door gives access to:
• The paper supply
• The ribbon supply
• The print mechanism
The right-hand door is fitted to the bottom plate by means of two
hinges that allow the door to be swung down 180˚ to a vertical
position. The door is kept shut by means of a magnetic lock. The
door can easily be removed from the hinges by pushing it forward
until the snap-lock at the rear hinge disengages.
At the inside of the door, there is a label showing how to load the
paper and the transfer ribbon.
The standard door can be replaced by an optional door provided
with a clear panel for easier view of the ribbon and paper supplies.
Thehingescanbeadjustedbymeansofthetwopairsof#T10Torx
screwsvisibleontheoutside.Possibly,theotherpartsofthehinges,
which are fitted to the bottom plate, may require adjustment too.
Shutthedoor,loosenthescrewsslightlyandalignthedoorwiththe
front moulding. Tighten the screws and check that the door runs
freely and is kept shut by the magnetic lock.
