ServiceProceduresandToolUsage
Anyoneusingaserviceprocedureortoolnotrecommendedinthismanualmustrst
satisfyhimselfthoroughlythatneitherhissafetynorvehiclesafetywillbejeopardized
bytheservicemethodheselects.Individualsdeviatinginanymannerfromthe
instructionsprovidedassumeallrisksofconsequentialpersonalinjuryordamageto
equipmentinvolved.Alsonotethatparticularserviceproceduresmayrequiretheuse
ofaspecialtool(s)designedforaspecicpurpose.Thesespecialtoolsmustbeused
inthemannerdescribed,wheneverspeciedintheinstructions.
DANGER
1.Beforestartingavehicle,alwaysbeseatedinthedriver’sseat,placethe
transmissioninneutral,applytheparkingbrakes,andpushintheclutchpedal.
Failuretofollowtheseinstructionscouldproduceunexpectedvehiclemovement,
whichcanresultinseriouspersonalinjuryordeath.2.Beforeworkingona
vehicle,placethetransmissioninneutral,settheparkingbrakes,andblockthe
wheels.Failuretofollowtheseinstructionscouldproduceunexpectedvehicle

Engine-drivencomponentssuchasPowerTake-Off(PTO)units,fansandfan
belts,driveshaftsandotherrelatedrotatingassemblies,canbeverydangerous.
Donotworkonorserviceengine-drivencomponentsunlesstheengineisshut
down.Alwayskeepbodypartsandlooseclothingoutofrangeofthesepowerful
componentstopreventseriouspersonalinjury.BeawareofPTOengagementor
nonengagementstatus.AlwaysdisengagethePTOwhennotinuse.
DANGER
Donotworkunderavehiclethatissupportedonlybyahydraulicjack.The
hydraulicjackcouldfailsuddenlyandunexpectedly,resultinginseverepersonal
injuryordeath.Alwaysusejackstandsofadequatecapacitytosupporttheweight
ofthevehicle.
CAUTION
Beforetowingthevehicle,placethetransmissioninneutralandlifttherearwheels
offtheground,ordisconnectthedrivelinetoavoiddamagetothetransmission
duringtowing.V olvoTrucks,Inc.cannotanticipateeverypossibleoccurrence
thatmayinvolveapotentialhazard.Accidentscanbeavoidedbyrecognizing
potentiallyhazardoussituationsandtakingnecessaryprecautions.Performing
serviceprocedurescorrectlyiscriticaltotechniciansafetyandsafe,reliablevehicle

TheV olvoD13Fenginewithelectronicunitinjectors,acooledExhaustGas
Recirculation(EGR)system,aExhaustAftertreatmentSystemwhichincludesa
DieselParticulateFilter(DPF)andtheHolsetV ariableGeometryTurbocharger
(VGT).TheV olvoEngineBrakeisoptional.Theengineconformstoyear2007
EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA)requirements.TheD13FEGRsystem
featuresreducedrestrictionplusenhancedefciencyandreliability.Itsventurisystem
iseasytoservice.AExhaustAftertreatmentSystemrequireselevatedexhaust
temperatures.Thesystemusesadieseloxidationcatalyst,adieselparticulatelter
andin-linereheatingoftheexhaustgases.TheDPFsystemremovesParticulate
Matter(PM)fromtheexhausttoconformtothe2007EPAregulations.TheHolset
VGTfeaturesxedvaneswithaslidingnozzlering.Thenozzlepositionisinnitely
variablebetweenopenandclosed.Thisdesignreactsquicklytoexhaustpressure
andcontrolsinletpressuremoreprecisely.Reliabilityisenhancedbyhavingfewer
movingparts.Itsactuatorandbearinghousingarewatercooledandengineoil
lubricatedforgreaterdurability.Awiderangeofthecurrenttransmissionofferings,
includingmanual,automatedmanualandautomatic,canbeteamedwiththeD13F.
DiagnostichelpcanbefoundinthePremiumTechTool(PTT).ToobtaintheTech
Tool,contactyourlocalV olvoDealer.Theengineweighsapproximately1160kg
(2560lb.)dry(withaircompressor,withoutoil,coolant,starter,fan,alternatorand
clutch).Itsdesignincludesaone-piececylinderhead,asingleoverheadcamshaft,
threerockerarmspercylinder,unitinjectorsandnopushrods.V olvoEngineBrake
requiringafourthrockerarm,isoptional.Monosteelpistonsaremadeinonepiece.

UseofetherorsimilartypesofstartingaidsinV olvo®US07emissioncompliant
enginesisstrictlyprohibited.Thisappliestoengineswithorwithouttheelectric
pre-heateroption.Anexplosioncouldoccur.Failuretoheedthisdangermay
resultinseverepersonalinjuryordeath.
Twooptionalfandrivesareavailable:On/Offandelectronicallyactuated.The
electronicallyactuatedviscousfandriveispreciselycontrolledbytheEngine
ElectronicControlUnit(EECU).
TiminggearsmountontherearoftheD13Fimprovingtheowofcoolingairaround
thefront.Specialserviceinstructionsapplytothecamshaftpositionsensor.The
mountingplate,idlerandcamshaftgearsaremarkedtofacilitateproperinstallation.
Theaircompressordrivegearmesheswiththedoubleidlerinsteadoftheauxiliary
idlerasontheMP7engine.AnotherfeatureoftheD13Fistherearenginepower
take-off(REPTO-ready)thatisgeardriventhroughthetiminggeartrain.Anoptional
PTOwithdrivegear,bearingandhousingcanbeaddedatthefactory.
Therockerarmshaftisheldinplacebycamshaftbearingcapscrews.Therearespecial
instructionsforinstallingthecamshaftbearingcapsandtherockerarmshaftduring
service.Astiffenerplatefastenstothebottomofthecylinderblocktoensureblock
strengthandrigidity.Theenginecanbeusedwithaxleforwardoraxlebackvehicles
byvirtueofoptionaloilpans.
Theenginefanismountedhighorlowdependingonvehicleconguration.
Theunitinjectorincorporatesthepump,valveandinjector.Itsinternalsolenoids
permitfast,precisecontroloffueldeliveryintothecylinder.Theunitinjectors
areencasedbythevalvecoverandnotexposedtotheheatofexhaustsystem
components.Fuelpassesthroughtwolters,oneofwhichseparateswaterfrom
thefuel.High-pressurefuelintheunitinjectorsiscreatedviatherockerarmswith
rollerfollowersinconstant,directcontactwiththecams.Replacinginjectorsrequires
aspecicprocedure,andinstallationrequiresthattheEECUbeprogrammedto
recognizereplacementinjectors.Cleaninginjectorboresrequiresaspecialtool.An
enginecompressionbrakeoptionontheD13Fengineassistsdecelerationandbraking.
Theoperationofthebrakediffersfromearlierenginemodels.Workinginconjunction
withtheexhaustcycle,thebrakerequiresacamshaftwithfourcamspercylinder,two
rockerarmsfortheexhaustvalve,abridgeoverthetwoexhaustvalves,anelectronic
controlvalveandawiringharnessthatincludesthecontrolvalve.Theexhaustvalves
areadjustedwithshimsUniquecolorsandtheappearanceofthevalvecover,lters
andlogolabelsdistinguishtheD13FfromotherenginesintheV olvoline.Preventive
maintenanceisimportanttogetthemostfromtheV olvoD13Fengineandtoensure
manyyearsofreliable,trouble-freeoperation.
Therearerestrictionsconcerningthereuseofcertainfasteners.
