Chapter 1
Introduction
This is the Installaon Guide for all Xilinx® Alveo™ X3522 card variants, including the following:
• X3522 low latency network adapter.
• X3522PV adaptable accelerator card.
It gives detailed procedures for engineers to setup the X3522, and to provide an environment for
tesng it.

Intended Audience
The intended audience for this Installaon Guide are soware installaon, conguraon and test
engineers responsible for tesng and evaluang the X3522.
Features
The Xilinx® Alveo™ X3522 is a single slot, half length, half height form factor passively cooled
card that brings low latency networking and compute acceleraon to a single plaorm.
It uses an XCUX35 FPGA (XCUX35-3VSVA1365E). It has two DSFP28 network connecons and
a PCI Express® Gen4 ×8 / Gen3 ×8 interface connected to the XCUX35. Each DSFP28 cage
supports two ports via a shared PF, currently at 10 GbE, with 25 GbE support to follow. See
Figure 1: X3522 Block Diagram.
The shell provides the user with the PCIe link and management funcons necessary to operate
and program the card.

X3522 Low Latency Network Adapter
In this variant, low-latency network interface card funconality is enabled by a soware-dened
network interface controller (SoNIC) in the shell. The SoNIC provides network acceleraon
capabilies.
You can upgrade this variant to hybrid mode so that it is programmable. The upgrade provides an
addional dynamic region. This is a recongurable paron that the user can dynamically
program at runme when running an applicaon.
X3522PV Adaptable Accelerator Card
This variant is suitable for customers using the card purely as a vehicle to have a PCIe-aached
FPGA for a Vivado-based workow. For example, it can be used for trading acceleraon or
compute ooad applicaons.

Server Requirements
The server hosng the X3522 must meet the following requirements:
• The server must have a 64-bit x86 processor.
• The server must be able to accept a half height half length 8-lane PCIe board.
• The server must meet the Thermal Specicaons given in the Alveo X3522 Data Sheet
(DS1002).
Note: A desktop machine is unlikely to meet these specicaons.
If the server does not meet these specicaons the X3522 can overheat, causing prevenve
measures such as reducing throughput or shung down the card. See Chapter 6:
Troubleshoong.
• The server should have an operang system installed that is supported by the X3522
soware.
Refer to the Release Notes for the X3522 drivers and other soware that you are using.
• The following oponal packages are required:
○kernel-headers
○kernel-devel, or kernel-smp-devel (for Symmetric Mul-Processing systems).

Chapter 2
Card Installation
This chapter tells you how to install an X3522 in its host machine.
To reduce the risk of re, electric shock, or injury, always follow basic safety precauons.
CAUTION! The X3522 can become hot under power. Before handling it you must remove power and wait
for it to cool.

Electrostatic Discharge Caution
Electrostac discharge (ESD) can damage electronic components when they are improperly
handled, and can result in total or intermient failures. Always follow ESD-prevenon procedures
when removing and replacing components.
To prevent ESD damage:
• Use an ESD wrist or ankle strap and ensure that it makes skin contact. Connect the equipment
end of the strap to an unpainted metal surface on the chassis.
• Avoid touching the card against your clothing. The wrist strap protects components from ESD
on the body only.
• Handle the card by its bracket or edges only. Avoid touching the printed circuit board or the
connectors.
• Put the card down only on an anstac surface such as the bag supplied in your kit.
• If you are returning the card to Xilinx Product Support, place it back in its anstac bag
immediately.
Attention aux Décharge Électrostatique (ESD)
L'ESD peut endommager les composants électroniques lorsqu'ils sont mal manipulés, et peut
entraîner des défaillances totales ou intermientes. Suivez toujours les procédures de prévenon
contre les ESD lors du retrait et remplacement des composants.

• Si vous retournez la carte a Xilinx, remeez-la dans son sac anstaque immédiatement.

Vorsicht Elektrostatische Entladung
Elektrostasche Entladung (ESD) kann elektronische Bauteile beschädigen, wenn sie
unsachgemäß behandelt werden, und es kann zu totalen oder zeitweiligen Ausfällen kommen.
Befolgen sie beim Enernen und Austauschen von Komponenten stets die ESD-
Schutzmaßnahmen.
So verhindern sie ESD-Schäden:
• Verwenden sie einen ESD-Handgelenk-oder Knöchelriemen und stellen sie sicher, dass er
Hautkontakt hat. Verbinden sie das Ende des Riemens mit einer unlackierten Metalloberäche
am Gehäuse.
• Berühren sie die Karte nicht mit ihrer Kleidung. Der Riemen schützt Komponenten nur vor
ESD am Körper.
• Fassen sie die Karte nur an der Halterung oder an den Kanten an. Berühren sie nicht die
Leiterplae oder die Anschlüsse.
• Legen sie die Karte nur auf einer anstaschen Oberäche ab, z.B. dem anstaschen Beutel
der mit dem Kit mitgeliefert wurde.
• Wenn sie die Karte an den Xilinx Product Support zurücksenden, legen Sie sie bie sofort
wieder in den anstaschen Beutel.

qualied technician only. This equipment is intended for installaon in a Restricted Access Locaon.

• Verify that the minimum card space is available to install your card. Card specicaons and
dimensions can be found in Alveo X3522 Data Sheet (DS1002).
• Check for card compability with the system. Also check for proper system requirements such
as power, bus type, and physical dimensions to support the card.

Install the Card
You must t the X3522 to a 64-bit x86 server in an 8‑lane PCIe slot.
CAUTION! Servers contain high voltage electrical components. Before removing the server cover,
disconnect the mains power supply to avoid the risk of electrocuon. Before handling computer
components, discharge stac electricity from yourself by touching a metal surface, or wear a correctly
ed an-stac wrist band.

capot du serveur, débranchez l'alimentaon secteur pour éviter tout risque d'électrocuon. Veuillez vous
déchargez de l'électricité staque en touchant une surface métallique ou portez un bracelet anstaque

Get Details of the Card
1. If necessary, note the serial number of the X3522 (located on the card) for your own records.
For example:
5056B1085011
2. Read the MAC address QR code using a smartphone, and note it down to help idenfy the
card later in this install. For example:
00:0a:35:0d:91:70
Note: This is a base address. There are 16 addresses available from this base.
Locate an 8‑lane PCI Express Slot
The X3522 is a half height, half length, 8‑lane PCIe form factor card.
IMPORTANT! The X3522 requires an 8
‑ lane PCI Express slot. The card should be installed in a PCIe Gen4
or PCIe Gen3 slot.
IMPORTANT! La carte X3522 nécessite un emplacement PCI Express pour 8 lignes. La carte doit être
installé dans un slot PCIe Gen4 ou PCIe Gen3.
