1.0 GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1 Preface
The Z3-DME-01 Digital Media Encoder is a cost-optimized, compact 186mm x 123mm system that supports
H.264 High Profile encode up to 1080p at 30 frames per second. This solution works in multiple applications
such as low-cost broadcast encoders, low-bandwidth video security, satellite uplink, remote monitoring and
industrial uses. The Z3-DME-01 provides immediate access to multi-format HD video, integrated system
peripherals and production-qualified codecs.
The Z3-DME-01 offers multi-format, multi-channel HD video up to 1080p30. The Z3-DME-01 features HD
performance, compact size, and low latency while still having less power consumption than a PC-based
encoder platform.

5.0 GETTING STARTED AND RUNNING THE Z3-DME-01
For this demonstration, you will need: a computer, a 1080p30/1080i video source, a Z3-DME-01, a
12V power supply, an HDMI Cable, an HDMI to SDI Converter, a coaxial cable and at least 1 Ethernet
cable.
5.1 Setting up the Video Source
(1) Select an HD source with HDMI non-HDCP output (in Z3’s testing, the Brite-View BV-5005HD is
used).
-Power on the HD Source
-Connect an HDMI cable from the HD Source to a monitor
-Set the HD Source to 1080p30 or 1080i output
-Select and begin playback of the content
If you see playback on the monitor, you’ve confirmed the source works. Now move the HDMI
cable from the monitor to “HDMI In” on the HDMI to SDI converter box.
(2) Connect the coaxial cable from “SDI Out” on the converter box to the Z3-DME-01 “SD/HDI
Input” port (Figure 4).
5.2 Connecting the Z3-DME-01
(3) Connect an Ethernet cable to “Ethernet” on the Z3-DME-01 (see Figure 4). Connect the other
end of the Ethernet cable directly to a PC. You will use this PC to control the Z3-DME-01 and
to decode the output stream.
(4) Connect the 12V power supply to “+12VDC” (see Figure 4).

(5) Set the PC IP address to one that can communicate with the Z3-DME-01
(a) Find the IP address of the Z3-DME-01. This can be found on the sticker on the bottom of the
Z3-DME-01. It should be 192.168.0.65.
(b) This means you need to set your PC to an IP address of 192.168.x.y. We recommend using
192.168.0.6.
(c) If you are using a Windows PC, bring up the IP Properties window of your PC. Though this
may vary depending on the version of Windows running on your PC, a typical sequence would
be something like:
(i) Find the “My Network Places” icon and double-click on it to bring up the “My Network
Places” window.
(ii) On the left side of that window, find “View Network Connections” and click on that.
(iii) This should bring up a list of connections. If the Ethernet cable is connected, one of
the connections that shows up is “Local Area Connection”. Right-click on this and
select “Properties”.
(iv) You should then see a “Local Area Connection Properties” Window. In this window, one
of the options is “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)”. Select this and click on “Properties”.

(d) At this point, you should now see the “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties” window (Figure
7). Click on “Use the following IP address” and set the IP Address to the value you determined
in step (b) (default value = 192.168.0.6). Also make sure the netmask is “255.255.0.0”. Then
click “Ok” to save these values.
(e) If you are using Linux, you can set up an alias network address to match what you need. An
example of a command doing this would be:
# sudo ifconfig eth0:0 192.168.0.6 netmask 255.255.0.0

(6) Power on the Z3-DME-01:
(7) Wait around 1 minute for the “Status” LED to light up.
(8) Open a web browser (FireFox or Chrome is recommended). Type in http://192.168.0.65 You
should then see the Z3-DME-01 Main Menu (if you don’t see this, please see the Troubleshooting
section on page 31).

(9) Make sure “Video Source” is SDI, “Output Interface” is “ASI+Ethernet (CBR)” and “Output
Format” is “MPEG-2 TS.”
(10) Set “Dest IP Address” to the IP address of your PC as determined in step (5) (default value =
192.168.0.6). Also note the value of “Dest Port” (default value 8888). This will be important
when configuring VLC to receive the encoded stream.
(11) The encoder may have already started. If it has, click on “stop”. The status should then
change to “Stopped”. Then click on “Start Encoder”. Once you do this, the status will
change. If the encoder hadn’t started already, simply click on “Start Encoder” and observe
the status change:

5.5 Opening a VLC Client to Receive the Encoded Stream
(12) Run VLC on your PC (version used in testing at Z3: 2.05. Any version after 1.1 should be ok.)
(13) Select Media – Open Network Stream. In the box, type “udp://@192.168.0.6:8888”, where
“192.168.0.6” is the IP address of your PC, and 8888 is the value of “Dest Port” from (10).

(14) Press “Enter”.
(15) You should now see video streaming from VLC.

5.6 Streaming RTP
Once you have UDP streaming running, it is relatively simple to change to RTP streaming. All that
is needed are a change of settings and an SDP file (an example file is provided with the software
release from Z3). To stream using RTP, do the following steps:
(16) Click on “Stop Encoder” to stop the current encoding session.
(17) Change “Output Interface” from “ASI+Ethernet (CBR)” to “Ethernet (VBR)” (see Figure 10).
This is necessary because RTP is a variable bitrate format and is not supported over ASI.
(18) Change “Output Format” from “MPEG-2 TS” to “RTP” (see Figure 10)(Note: Do not select
“MPEG-TS over RTP”).
(19) Confirm that “Dest Port” (see Figure 9) is 8888 (this will be important for the VLC
configuration).
(20) Copy the “z3-dm368.sdp” file received from Z3 to your PC.
(21) Open VLC. Select “Media – Open File” and select the “z3-dm368.sdp” file you just copied.
(22) You should then see RTP video streaming on VLC:

“Follow input” = Generate encoder resolution based on capture resolution detected
6.1 Changing parameters
It is possible to change 2 parameters in the middle of an encoding session:
(1) Video Bitrate
(2) Frame Decimation
To change these, simply enter the new desired value and then click the “Start Encoder” button.
The web page will respond with the following message:
Status: Changed rate
The video stream will then continue interrupted with the new parameter.
