Overview
This Quick Start Guide covers the following models:
• V300: IP Phone.
• V301: IP Phone with Power over Ethernet (PoE).
This Quick Start Guide shows you how to set up and use your V300. It
includes the following sections:
• Hardware and Connections - introduces the physical features of
the V300 and shows how to connect it to your network.
• Initial Configuration - shows how to set up the V300 on your
network and configure it to use your VoIP account.
• Phone Operation - covers how to use the V300’s basic telephone
functions, such as making a call.
You can also configure the V300 using a computer connected to the
V300’s PC port. See your User’s Guide for details.

The following table describes some of the hardware features used for
basic operations. See the hardware chapter in your User’s Guide for full
descriptions of all features.
FEATURE DESCRIPTION
MENU Press this to display the V300’s configuration menu. When the
menu displays, you can press this key again to exit the menu. The
menu is not accessible when a call is in progress.
Navigator Press these keys to move around the V300’s screens. Press to
go up one line in a menu, and press to go down one line. In the
configuration menu, press to access a menu or continue to the
next menu, and press to go back to the previous menu. When
the V300 is not in the configuration menu, you can press or
to view the previous calls and use to delete the records or save
them as the contacts in your phone book. When the V300 is
connected to the Internet and not in the configuration menu, use
or to select the SIP account you want to use to make calls.
PHONEBOOK Use this to display the list of contacts stored in the V300. If there is
no contact stored in the V300, the message “Phonebook is empty”
displays.
When you are using the V300’s menus, press this key to delete a
character.
Alphanumeric
keypad
Use these to enter numbers, letters and symbols. Use the # key to
switch between number (123) mode, uppercase mode (ABC),
lowercase mode (abc) and symbolmode (;:”).
Microphone The microphone is active when the V300 is in speakerphone
mode.
Volume keys Use the +key to increase the volume, and use the -key to
decrease it.
• When you use the handset, these keys control the handset’s
speaking and listening volume.
• When you use a headset, these keys control the speaking and
listening volume on the headphone ( ) and microphone ( )
ports on the V300.
• When you use the speakerphone, these keys control the
internal speaker and microphone volume.

1. LAN: Use an Ethernet cable to connect the V300 to your network.
V301 only: If you are using Power over Ethernet (PoE), connect the
Ethernet cable supplying power to this port. See V301 Only: Power
over Ethernet (Optional) for more information on PoE.
2. PC (optional): Use an Ethernet cable to connect your computer to the
PC port on the V300 to access your network through the V300, or to
configure the V300 using the web configurator (see your User’s
Guide for information on using the web configurator).
3. HANDSET: Connect the included handset cable to the port on the
V300’s base. Connect the other end to the handset. Hang up the
receiver before you connect the power.
4. POWER: Connect the included power adapter to the POWER socket
on the V300. Plug the power adapter into an appropriate power
source.
V301 only: If you are using Power over Ethernet (PoE), you do not
need to connect the power adaptor.

V301 Only: Power over Ethernet (Optional)
Power over Ethernet (PoE) is the ability to provide power to your V301
via an 8-pin CAT 5 Ethernet cable, eliminating the need for a nearby
power source.
A PoE injector (not included) is also needed to supply the Ethernet cable
with power. This feature allows increased flexibility in the location of your
V301.
In the following figure, Zis your V301, A is the CAT 5 Ethernet cable, B
is the PoE injector and Cis the power cable.

Initial Configuration
This section describes how to use the phone’s LCD screen menus to:
• Set Up Your Network Connection
and
• Set Up Your Voice Account
The phone does not need to be connected to a computer to do this.
However, if you want to configure your V300 using a computer, see your
User’s Guide for information.
When entering information, use the # key to cycle between
uppercase (ABC), lowercase (abc), symbol (;:”) and number (123)
modes. The current mode is displayed on the LCD.
Press a key multiple times to access the different characters. For
example, in uppercase mode press 9 four times to enter “Z”.
Set Up Your Network Connection
When you have finished your hardware
connections, look at the LCD screen.
The main screen displays, showing
time and date details, as well as your
Voice over Internet (VoIP) account
registration status.
When you are using the V300’s menus, press the MENU or key to
return to the main screen.

When a VoIP account is not successfully registered, No Reg displays.
When an account is successfully registered, the account name displays
(1234 in this example).
 If the LCD displays nothing, recheck your hardware
connections. See section .
Follow these steps to configure your network settings.
1. Press MENU to access the menu,
and use the navigator to scroll down
to Adv Setting. Press .
You can also use the alphanumeric keypad to make your selections
in the LCD screen. For example, you can press the 4 key in the
Menu Setting screen (above) to go to the Adv Setting screen.
2. Choose from the following options:
• If you were given a username and password for network access, go
to Set Up PPPoE on page 11.
• If you were given an IP address and subnet mask to use, go to Set
Up a Static IP Address on page 12.
• If you were not given an IP address, go to Get an IP Address
Automatically on page 13.
Entering Letters, Numbers and Symbols
When you enter information into the V300 (when setting up PPPoE, for
example) you may need to enter different kinds of characters. The
alphanumeric keypad has four input modes: Numeric, Uppercase
Alphabet, Lowercase Alphabet, and Symbol.
Use the # key to cycle between them.

Set Up a Static IP Address
1. If you have an IP address to use,
press 5in the Adv Setting menu.
2. Press to access the menu.
3. Press again to activate Static IP.
4. Select IP Address (Press 2).
5. Press to configure the new IP
address. Use PHONEBOOK to
clear the default setting (0.0.0.0)
and enter the new IP address and
press again. (Use the asterix key [*] to enter a period.)
6. Scroll down and set up the
Gateway IP address, Subnet Mask
and 1st and 2nd DNS servers (if
you have information about only
one DNS server, set up the 1st DNS only).
Enter the information exactly as provided by your ISP.
You have finished setting up your network connection. Now go to Set Up
Your Voice Account (14).

Get an IP Address Automatically
The V300 is set to get an IP address automatically by default.
1. If you have neither a username and
password nor an IP address to use,
press 4in the Adv Setting menu.
DHCP allows your V300 to get an
IP address automatically.
2. Press to access the menu.
3. If the screen displays Off, press .
If the screen displays On, your
V300 is already set to get an IP
address automatically. You do not
need to change anything.
If DHCP is already set to ON, then you can choose another setting,
such as PPPoE or Static IP, to turn it off.
You have finished setting up your network connection. Now go to Set Up
Your Voice Account (14).

Set Up Your Voice Account
Follow these steps to configure your VoIP account.
1. Go to the main screen (Set Up Your Network Connection, 9).
1. Press MENU to enter the menu
system. Then, press 4to enter the
Adv Setting menu and press .
2. Press again to enter the VoIP1 menu.
3. When prompted, enter the phone’s
admin Password. The default is
1234. Next, press to continue.
4. Make sure the SIP account is
active. When the SIP account is
active, the V300 tries to register the
account on the network.
If the menu that displays shows On, then your SIP account is already
active - press and skip on to step 5.
If the menu that displays shows Off, the SIP account is not activated.
Press to select On and press .

5. Enter the information exactly as given to you by your VoIP service
provider.
If your VoIP service provider did not give you information to use for
any of the fields in this menu, leave them at their default settings.
The following table describes the fields in this menu.
FIELD DESCRIPTION
1 SIP1 Active Select this to turn this SIP account on or off. When the SIP account
is not active, you cannot use it to make or receive calls.
2 SIP1 Num This is your SIP account number. If you have a SIP account like
[e-mail], the SIP Number is 1234567.
3 Serv Addr This is the IP address of the server your VoIP service provider
uses for SIP calls.
4 Serv Port This is the port on the SIP server used for SIP calls. The default is
5060.
5 Reg Addr This is the IP address of the server your VoIP service provider
uses to register the V300. If your VoIP service provider did not give
you a specific SIP register server address, enter the SIP Serv
address again.
6 Reg Port This is the port the SIP register server uses to register the V300.
The default is 5060.
7 Domain If you have a SIP account like [e-mail],
the SIP service domain is voip-provider.com.
8 User ID This is the user name for this SIP account.
9 Password This is the password for this SIP account.

6. When you are done configuring
your SIP account settings, press
MENU to return to the default LCD
display. The lower line of the LCD
displays your SIP number (“827610”, in this example) if it has
registered successfully.
7. See section for how to test your V300’s configuration by making a
call.
 If your SIP account does not register successfully (No Reg is
still displayed in the main screen) or you cannot make a call,
check your connections and re-enter your SIP settings.
Restart the V300 (turn the power off, then back on). If this
does not help, contact your network administrator or VoIP
service provider.

Phone Operation
This section describes how to use your V300’s basic telephone
functions.
MAKING A CALL
1. Pick up the handset.
The LCD screen displays Line 1 Dial:.
2. Check that you can hear a dial tone.
3. Enter the number you want to call.
4. Press the SEND key to start the call.
RECEIVING A CALL
When the phone rings, do one of the following:
• Pick up the handset to receive the call using the handset.
• Press the SPEAKER key to receive the call using the internal
speakerphone.
• Press the HEADSET key to receive the call using an external
headset.

ENDING A CALL
When you want to end a call, press the HANG UP key. Alternatively, do
one of the following:
• If you are using the handset, replace it in the cradle.
• If you are using the internal speakerphone, press the SPEAKER
key.
• If you are using an external headset, press the HEADSET key.
Viewing a Product’s Certification(s)
1. Go to www.zyxel.com.
2. Select your product from the drop-down list box on the ZyXEL
home page to go to that product's page.
