Safe use
To reduce the risk of bodily injury, electric shock, fire, and damage to the instrument, read and
observe the precautions in this User’s Guide.
If the product is used in a manner not in accordance with the equipment design, operating
instructions or manufacturer’s recommendations, the operation of the product may be impaired
to the extent a safety hazard is created.
Do not attempt to perform electrical work if you are not fully qualified. This manual is not a
substitute for electrical training.
Symbol conventions
The below list of symbols is for reference only. Not all symbols shown may be used on this
instrument or in the accompanying documentation.
The exclamation point within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert the user to the
presence of important operating and maintenance (service) instructions in the literature
accompanying this product.
The lightning flash with arrowhead symbol within an equilateral triangle is intended to
alert the user to the presence of uninsulated dangerous voltage within the product’s
enclosure. The dangerous voltage may be of sufficient magnitude to constitute risk of
electric shock to persons.
The static symbol within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert the user to the
presence of internal components which could be damaged by static electricity.
This static symbol is intended to alert the user to the presence of a specific component
which could be damaged by static electricity.
This symbol indicates the presence of alternating current (AC).
This symbol indicates the presence of a fuse.
This symbol indicates the presence of protective earth ground.
This symbol indicates the power is ON.

General cautions
• This product should be operated only with the type of power source indicated on the
product’s electrical ratings label. Refer to the installation instructions included with the
product.
• If the power cord provided is replaced for any reason or if an alternate cord is used, the
cord must be approved for use in the local country. The power cord must be approved
for the product’s listed operating voltage and be rated at least 20% greater than the
ampere ratings marked on the product’s electrical ratings label. The cord end connects
to the product must have an IEC 60320 connector.
• Plug the product into an approved grounded electrical outlet.
• Do not disable the power cord’s grounding plug.
• If an extension cord or power strip is used, make sure the cord or strip is rated for the
product, and the total ampere ratings of all products plugged into the extension cord or
strip do not exceed 80% of the cord’s or strip’s rating limit.
• Route power cords so they are not walked on, tripped on, or pinched by items placed
upon or against them. Pay attention to the plug, electrical outlet, and the point where the
cord exits the product.
• Do not pull on cords and cables. When unplugging cords or cables, grasp the
corresponding connector.
• Do not install or use this product in any area subject to extreme short-term temperature
variations, or locations exceeding the specified operating environment temperatures.
• Never use this product in a wet area.
• To avoid injury or fire hazard, do not operate this product in an explosive atmosphere.
• Do not install or use the product on an unstable, non-level work surface.
• Do not operate this product with the covers removed or unsecured.

Instruments could void the user’s authority to operate the equipment.
This equipment was tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B pursuant to Part 15
of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful
interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio
frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause
harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee interference does
not occur in an installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or
television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is

Interpreting Results
Data generated using Advanced Instruments standards and reference solutions may be
analyzed according to the accuracy and precision specifications of the instrument (see
Performance characteristics).
Laboratories may choose to employ one, two, or three standard deviations (SD) for accuracy
based on what is relevant in their laboratories. For normally distributed data, approximately 68%
of the individual data values will fall within one standard deviation of the mean, approximately 95%
within two standard deviations, and approximately 99.7% within three standard deviations.

1. Installation & setup
WARNING: It is important to read and follow the steps in this section. Read Chapter 2
System Overview before attempting to run tests on the instrument.
1.1 Find a location for the instrument
When choosing a location for the Advanced Instruments OsmoPRO Multi-Sample Micro-
Osmometer, be sure to meet the following criteria:
Adequate space: The dimensions of the instrument are 12” Wide x 13” Deep x 17” High (31 cm
x 33 cm x 43 cm). Be sure to keep the workplace free of debris and allow 6 inches (15 cm) of
clear space on both sides and behind the instrument for fan driven air circulation.
Electric outlet availability: The instrument needs to operate within five feet of a properly
grounded, three-prong electrical outlet capable of continuously supplying 2 amperes at
100-240VAC 50/60Hz. If the instrument is not grounded properly, its operation may be
impaired and it may be a safety hazard. Therefore, be sure to test the outlet and record the
results before operating the instrument.
IN THE CASE OF EMERGENCY: Power to the instrument can be removed by pulling the
detachable power cord from the electrical outlet.
1.2 Unpack the instrument
To unpack the instrument, take the following steps:
• Carefully unpack the instrument, accessories and supplies, and inspect them for
shipping damage. Use the enclosed packing list (Table 1.1) to verify all items were
received.
• Save the shipping boxes and packaging material in case future transport is necessary.
• If any item on the packing list appears to be missing from the shipment, search carefully
through and under all packing materials. If the item is not found, notify your receiving
department immediately. Advanced Instruments is only responsible for items reported
missing within 10 days of a shipment’s arrival.
• If any damaged items are received, save the cartons and packing material in which
those items came for inspection by the insurer. The carrier, dealer, and Advanced
Instruments must be notified within 24 hours for the warranty and insurance to apply.
Have the transportation company inspect items, fill out a “Report of Concealed
Damage,” and file a claim. Notify Advanced Instruments immediately for repair or
replacement.

1.3 Remove the rear panel
WARNING: When removing the rear panel, be sure to follow these instructions and
warnings.
• Disconnect power from the instrument.
• Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the rear panel. See Figure 1.1
• Remove rear panel.
• Performing service or maintenance not detailed in the User’s Guide, with or without a
service manual, should only be done by a qualified service technician.
• Use caution and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working near
the sample probe to prevent skin punctures or other injuries.

1.4 Remove the shipping stops
CAUTION:Do not apply electrical power before removing the cooling assembly and
sample probe shipping stops. Damage to the motors can result.
The OsmoPRO is shipped with two shipping stops. One secures the sample cooling assembly,
and the other secures the sample probe. Remove warning labels attached to the shipping stops
before turning on the power to the instrument by using the following procedure:
• Remove the cooling assembly shipping stop by unscrewing the red-capped thumb screw
from the turntable spindle.
• Lift the aluminum shipping stop straight up to avoid damage to the sample cooling
assembly.
• Secure the red-capped thumb screw in the side hole of the shipping stop and save
assembly for future use. (Figure 1.2)

• Locate the white sample probe shipping stop with a red-capped thumb screw.
• Loosen the thumb screw two full turns.
• Lift the top section of the shipping stop upwards approximately ½”, (13 mm) and then
remove from the instrument (Figure 1.3).
• Reinstall the instrument’s rear panel.

NOTE: Any reshipment of the OsmoPRO requires reinstallation of the cooling assembly
shipping stop, and the sample probe shipping stop.

1.5 Load printer paper
Install as follows:
• Lift open the printer door at top of instrument (Figure 1.5).
• Unroll 4-6” (15-20 cm) of thermal paper from the roll.
• Hold the roll so paper feeds upwards from the bottom of the roll towards the front of the
instrument, and place the roll into the printer.

• Gently close the printer door until it snaps shut (Figure 1.6). The unrolled portion of
thermal paper should protrude from the printer slot with the door closed.

1.6 Install turntable
• If the turntable is not presently installed on the instrument, place it on a flat surface with
the numbered side visible.
• Place a new probe wiper ring over the center knob of the turntable.
• Align the wiper ring so the wiper ring locating tab is in one of the depressions provided at
turntable position 1 and position 11. Verify all the turntable position numbers are visible
within the radial holes of the wiper ring (Figure 1.7).

• Place the evaporation cover (logo side facing up) over the center knob of the turntable
with the squared shaped open slot centered at turntable position 1 (Figure 1.8), and
facing the instrument.
• Grasp the turntable by the center knob and place it on the turntable spindle so the flat
side of the evaporation cover fits into the opening in the instrument cover.

• Slowly push the turntable forward and twist slightly until it aligns and drops down over
the mating drive spindle (Figure 1.9). Use care not to strike the probe assembly.

• While holding the outer edge of the turntable and evaporation cover with one hand, turn
the knurled turntable locking screw (Figure 1.10) fully clockwise to lock the turntable onto
the drive spindle. Make sure it is secure, but do not over-tighten.

1.7 Power-up instrument
• Connect the power cord to the input module on the instrument’s back panel (Figure 1.11)
and to a power outlet.
• Turn on the instrument by pushing the rocker-style power switch on the instrument’s
back panel to the ( I ) position.
The instrument initially displays the OsmoPRO Splash screen (Figure 1.12). The turntable
moves to the home position, and the message “LOADING PROCESSES” appears in the lower-
right corner of the screen.

The program Main screen (Figure 1.13) displays once the software loads completely.

The Main screen is the starting point for all OsmoPRO software functions (e.g., Loading,
Results, Calibration, Diagnostics, and Settings). These functions described in detail in
subsequent sections.
The left side of the Main screen represents the current status of the turntable. Information
regarding the tube position number, Sample ID, date and time, result, and test progress appears
as the turntable is loaded and tests complete.
• The right side of the Main screen displays the test results.
• The top right corner displays instrument status.
• The Main screen also provides access to information using the two symbols in the
lower-left corner of the screen (see Chapter 3).
NOTE: If the instrument does not power on, or if the behavior while powered on does not match
what is listed in Installation & Setup sections, contact Advanced Instruments Hot-Line Technical
Service.

2. System overview
The OsmoPRO is a 20-position, Multi-Sample Micro-Osmometer designed to process batched
samples with unattended operation. The OsmoPRO features a convenient turntable design for
easy sample loading, and uses a relatively small 20 µL sample volume.
The OsmoPRO provides fast, accurate and precise test results using the industry-preferred
freezing point depression method and is ideally suited for mid- to high-volume laboratories
preferring to automate osmolality batch testing while improving laboratory efficiency and
throughput.
2.1 Intended use
Advanced Instruments Osmometers use the technique of freezing point depression to measure
osmolality. Osmolality is the total solute concentration of an aqueous solution. Osmometers
measure the number of solute particles irrespective of molecular weight or ionic charge. This
information is useful to the following disciplines:
• Clinical, emergency and sports medicine
• Medical research
• Biotechnology and pharmaceutical research and manufacturing
• Food and beverage manufacturing
• Environmental research and monitoring
• Academic research
• Industrial applications
For clinical applications, the OsmoPRO provides osmolality measurement of biological fluids,
and is intended for use by trained healthcare professionals to assist in the diagnosis and
treatment of water and electrolyte imbalances in the general patient population. Osmometers
test virtually any biological fluid including, but not limited to, serum, whole blood, plasma, urine,
feces, sweat, and tissue homogenate. Operation of the instrument is deemed moderate
complexity under CLIA and FDA guidelines.
2.2 Principles of freezing point depression
When a solute is dissolved in a pure solvent, the following changes in the solution's properties
occur:
• Freezing point is depressed
• Boiling point is raised
• Osmotic pressure is increased
• Vapor pressure is lowered
These are the so-called "colligative" or concentrative properties of the solution which, within
reasonable limits, change in direct proportion to the solute concentration (the number of
particles in solution).
