Theseresponsibilitiesareoutlinedbelowandthroughoutthismanual.

AirSepCorporation warrantsthe LifeStyleOxygen Concentratorto befree from
defectin partsfor twoyears (oras specifiedon theoriginal invoiceprovided) fromthe
dateof deliveryto theoriginal purchaser,undernormal useand operation.Thebattery is
warrantiedfor90 days.AirSepCorporation’sobligations underthiswarrantyarelimited
tothe repairor replacement ofany suchitem of equipment(or partthereof) shown to

2.0 Operation Check and Oxygen Concentration Test
2.1 Description of Operation
Airentersthe LifeStyleOxygenConcentratorthroughan externalairintake /gross
particlefilter. Thisfilteredair entersthe compressorviaasuctionresonator thatquiets
thecompressor’ssuctionsound. Pressurized air thenexits the compressorand passes
througha heatexchanger. The heat exchangerreduces the temperatureof thecom-
pressedair. Next, a two-waysolenoidfeed valve directstheair into one oftwo sieve
bedsthatcontain molecularsieve. The uniqueproperty ofmolecularsieveenablesit to
physicallyattract(adsorb)nitrogenwhenairpasses throughthismaterial, thereby
separatingthenitrogenfromtheoxygeninambientair.
Thereare twosieve beds: Whileone produceshigh-concentration oxygen,the otheris
purgedof thenitrogen itadsorbed (collected)whileit madeoxygen. Each adsorber
(bed)producesoxygen forapproximately eightseconds anddeliversit througha
producttank tothe regulator.From theregulator, oxygenpassesthrough theproduct
filterandthentotheoutletfitting.
Inaddition tothe molecularsieve beds thatallow oxygento beseparated from air,
LifeStylecontainsanOxygen ConservingDevice(OCD)valve thatcontrolsdeliveryof
high-concentration oxygentothe patientatthe pointin thebreathingcycle whenthe
patientstartsto inhale.
LifeStyledeliversagasconsistingof90%(±3%)oxygenatpulseflowratesfrom1–5lpm.
2.2 Operation Check
AirSeptestseveryLifeStyleOxygenConcentrator thoroughlyaftermanufacture. You
mustperformthe followingtesttoensurethat nodamageoccurred inshipping or
handling.
1. Openand inspectall cartonsupon delivery. Unpackthe unitand removeit
fromthecarton.Inspectthe unititself fordamage. Ifthe exteriorofaunit’s
cartonisdamaged, orifthe unititselfis damaged,notethis onthefreight bill
signedbythe driver.
2. Connect the power cordof the unit,and set the ON/OFF switchto theON
position.Checktoseethatthefollowing sequenceoccurs:
a. A brief,continuousalarmsounds toindicatethatLifeStylehas
beenturned on.
b. The compressorruns.
c. Exhaustairflowsfromtheunit.
3. Performan oxygenconcentration test, asdescribed inSection 2.4.

2.3 AlarmSystem
Anaudiblealarm soundsifLifeStylehasalow battery, sensesnoinspiration, orif
performanceoutside ofspecifications isdetected. Ifan alarmsounds, openthe cover,
andobservewhich lightsareon. The visualand audiblealarmconditions areexplained
indetailbelow.
2.3.1 Start-Up
Afive-second,continuous,audiblealarmsoundsto indicatestart-up.LifeStyle
beginsto operate whenthe alarm stops.
2.3.2 Low Battery
Asthe battery power approaches a lowlevel, a one-second beep isemittedevery
fiveseconds,andthe yellowBATTERY lightflashesforonesecondeveryfive
seconds. Whenthis occurs, thepatient is instructedto replace thebattery,connect
LifeStyleto a DC autoadapterpower outlet or anAC power outlet, orchangeto
anothersourceof oxygenwithinfiveminutes. WhenLifeStyleisconnectedtoa DC
autoadapter outlet orto anAC outlet,power from theautomobilebattery or from
theACoutletoperatesLifeStyleandrechargesLifeStyle’sbattery simultaneously.
2.3.3 Discharged Battery
LifeStyledoes notproduce oxygenwhen thebattery powerfalls belowa certain
level. Whenthis occurs,ahalf-second beepsoundsevery halfsecond,and the
YELLOW batterylight flashes. Inthis case, thepatient is instructedto replacethe
battery,connect LifeStyleto a DCauto adapter outlet or anACoutlet, or change to
anothersource ofoxygen immediately. When LifeStyleisconnected toa DCauto
adapteror anACoutlet,power from theautomobile battery orfromtheACoutlet
operatesLifeStyleandrechargesLifeStyle’sbatterysimultaneously.
2.3.4 Battery Charging
Chargethebatteryforthe firsttime fora minimumof 12hours. The BATTERY light
mayilluminateasteadyyellowsignificantlybefore12hours;however,thebattery
shouldbe leftin LifeStylewithLifeStyleconnectedto theDCauto adapterorAC
adapterforthe full12 hours. WhenLifeStyleis pluggedintoanautomobile’sDC
outletor anACoutlet andis turnedOFF, theyellow BATTERY light flashesto
indicatethat thebatteryisbeingcharged. WhenLifeStyleisturnedON andplugged
intothe DC auto adapterorAC adapter, thebattery still charges;however,the
yellowBATTERY light isnoton.

2.3.5 Battery Fully Charged
WhenLifeStyleis connected toanAC orDCoutlet and isin theOFF setting, the
yellowBATTERY lightilluminatesanddisplayscontinuouslytoindicatethatthe
batteryisfully charged. However,whenchargingthebattery forthefirst time,the
batteryshould beleft inthe chargerfor12 hourseven ifthe yellowBATTERYlight
isoncontinuously.
2.3.6 Cannula Disconnect
WhenLifeStyle isconnected toa power sourceand doesnot sensebreathing within
apredetermined timeperiod, a constantalarm sounds, andthe redALARM light
illuminates. Ifthisoccurs, thepatientis instructedtochecktheconnection fromthe
cannulatothe LifeStyleunit,make surethatthe nasalcannulais positionedproperly
onthe face,and ensurethat breathingis throughthenose. If thealarm continuesto
sound,the patientshould changetoan alternatesource ofoxygen and contactthe
EquipmentProvider.
2.3.7 Performance Warning
TheperformanceofLifeStylecan beaffected bytwo conditions. Thefirstisifthe
user’sbreathing rate causesthe LifeStyleunit’scapacity tobe exceeded. The
LifeStyleunitsuppliesafixedamountofhigh-concentrationoxygen. Theamountof
oxygenthatLifeStylesupplies isdependenton theflowcontrolswitch settingand
thebreathing rate. Ifthe breathingrate is toofast forthe flowselector setting, the
capacityof LifeStylecan beexceeded.
Thesecond conditionthat canresult indecreased performanceis ageneral
malfunction.LifeStylemonitorsitsperformanceand alertsthepatientifthisoccurs.
Ifeither ofthese events occurs,a half-secondalarm soundseveryfive seconds. If
breathingistoofastfor theflow selectorsetting andLifeStylecapacityisexceeded,
theredALARM lightflashes. If ageneral malfunctionoccurs, asteady red
ALARMlightappears. Duringthistime,LifeStyleisstillproducinghigh-purity
oxygenand maycontinue tobe used. Thepatient shouldreduce activityor consider
locatinganothersourceof oxygen.
2.3.8 LifeStyle Capacity Exceeded
Whenthe breathing ratehas caused thecapacityof LifeStyle tobe exceeded, a
half-secondalarmsounds everyhalf second,and theredalarmlightflashes. When
thisoccurs,oxygenconcentrationisoutsidespecifications. The patientshould
changeto anothersource ofoxygen andcontact theEquipment Provider.

2.3.9 General Malfunction
If ageneralmalfunctionoftheLifeStyleunit occurs,ahalf-second alarmsounds
everyhalf second,and thered ALARM lightturns on.Whenthisoccurs,oxygen
concentrationisoutside specifications. Thepatient shouldchangeto anothersource
ofoxygenand contacttheEquipmentProvider.
2.4 Oxygen Concentration Test and Specification
ToensurethatLifeStyle’s oxygenoutputiswithin specification,youmustperformatest
ofoxygen concentration.Test theunit upondelivery toa patientand atperiodic inter-
vals. EquipmentProviders,basedupontheir ownexpertise anddocumentation, may
establishandimplement theirownprotocol tocheckoxygen concentration. Theinterval
establishedmay belonger orshorter than 90days,AirSep’sdefault timeperiod for
providerswho do notchoose to establishtheirown protocol.
1. Connect LifeStyletoACelectricalpowerusingonly theAirSep-suppliedAC
adapter (AirSep Part No.PW005) to a 100-250 volt, 50/60 Hz outlet.
(Note: Do not use the battery [AirSep Part No. BT007-1] to operate the
unit when measuring oxygen concentration.)
2. TurnonLifeStyle,andadjust theflow selectorto anyof 1through 5lpm
settings.
3. Removethegrossparticlefilter.
4. Activate thetest modeby depressingthe switchlocated intheholelabeled
“T,”nextto thehour meter. The unitshould produce apulse doseofoxygen
equivalentto acontinuous flowof4 lpmat arate of18breaths-per-minute
whileinthetestmode.
5. When theunit suppliesa pulsedose ofoxygen,thegreenPULSE light ison,
andyouwillbeable tohear thepulse ofoxygen. Verifythatthepulse lightis
turningon andthat you canhear thepulse dose.
6. AllowLifeStyletorunforfiveminutesbeforerecordingtheoxygenconcen-
tration. Connecta calibratedTeledyneTEDor equivalentto theoxygen
outlet on the unit. Turn on the analyzer, and record the concentration. The
concentration specification in test mode is 90% ±3%.

3.0 Patient Instructions
3.1 GeneralInstructions
Itisimportant thatpatientsthoroughly understandhow tooperateAirSep’sLifeStyle
unit. Thisenablesproper treatmentas prescribedby aqualified,licensed physician.
Youmustexplainthat thepurpose ofthistherapy isto alleviatesymptoms. Ifpatients
experienceanydiscomfortor iftheunitalarms, theymustnotifytheirEquipmentPro-
viderand/orphysicianimmediately.
You,as theEquipment Provider,are responsibleto ensurethat eachpatientreceives the
LifeStyle Patient Manual. Explaineachstep in the operation ofthe unit to the patient
withreferencetothe patientmanual.
3.2 Routine Maintenance by the Patient
Toensureaccurateoutput andefficientoperationoftheunit, thepatient mustperform
twosimple,routinemaintenancetasks:
• Cleantheair intake/ grossparticlefilter
• Checkthe numberof hoursdisplayed on thehour meter.
3.2.1 Cleaning the Air Intake / Gross Particle Filter
NOTE
Thepatientmustcleanthisfilterweekly,
asdescribed below.Thefilter mayrequire
dailycleaningiftheLifeStyleunitoperates
inaharshenvironment; forexample,a
househeatedbywood, kerosene, or oil, or
onewithexcessive cigarettesmoke.
1. Liftthe cornerof theLifeStyle unitto exposethe airintake /gross
particlefilter.

2. Removethefilterfromtheunitandwashitinasolutionofwarmwater
and soap.
3. Rinsethefilter thoroughly, andremoveexcess waterwithasoft,
absorbenttowel.Ensure thatthe filteris drybefore replacingit.
4. Replacethedryfilter.
3.2.2 Checking the Hour Meter
Thecompressor, productfilter, and feltfilter mustbe replacedafter 3,000
hoursofunituse. Instruct the patientto take noteof the readingon thehour
meter,located beneath theairintakegrossparticle filter,whenever cleaning
theair intake /gross particlefilter. Whenthereading approaches 3,000
hours,instructthepatient thatitis importanttonotifytheEquipmentProvider.
3.3 Usage at Night or with Extended Tubing
InstructpatientsthatAirSeprecommends thatLifeStyleshouldbe usedwhilesleeping
orwithextended tubing(up to25 ft,7.5m)onlyunder thedirection oftheirclinician.

4.1 Routine Maintenance
TheLifeStyleunitincludestwofiltersandacompressorthat requirescheduledmainte-
nanceorreplacement.
Toensurethatthe outputofoxygen iswithin specification,youmust performatestof
oxygenconcentration. (Refer toSection 2.4,“Oxygen ConcentrationTestandSpecifi-
cation,”of thismanual.) Testtheunit upondeliveryto apatient andat periodicinter-
vals. EquipmentProviders,based ontheir expertiseanddocumentation, mayestablish
andimplementtheirownprotocol tocheck oxygenconcentration The intervalestab-
lishedmay belonger orshorter than90days,AirSep’sdefaulttime periodfor providers
whodo not chooseto establish their ownprotocol.
4.1.1 Air Intake / Gross Particle Filter
Theexternalair intakegrossparticle filterislocatedunderthe panelcovering
theLifeStylecontrols. Youcaneasily removeit byhand. Instructthepatient
toclean thisfilter weekly. (Refer toSection 3.2.1,“Cleaning theAir Intake/
GrossParticleFilter,”ofthismanual.)
NOTE
Thefiltermayrequiremorefrequentcleaning
iftheLifeStyleunit operatesinaharsh
environment— ahouseheated bywood,
kerosene,or oil,or onewithexcessive cooking
orcigarette smoke.
4.1.2 Product Filter Replacement
Theproduct filter mustbe replaced afterevery 3,000 hoursof use.
1. Setthe unit’sON/OFF switchto theOFF position,and disconnect
the power cord.
2. Removethe bottomhousing, andlocate theproduct filter. (Referto
Section5.2.1of thismanual.)
3. Disconnectthetubingfrom theinletand outletoftheproduct filter.
4. Connectthe tubingto thenew filter, andsecure withtie wraps.
5. Replacethebottomhousing.

4.1.3 Compressor Replacement
AstheEquipmentProvider,youare responsibleformonitoring thelifeof the
compressor,which must bereplaced after 3,000 hoursof use.
Referto Section5.3 ofthismanual forcompressor replacementprocedures.
4.1.4 Recording Maintenance
AstheEquipment Provider,youshouldrecord allroutinemaintenance and
repairsperformedon theLifeStyleunit,includinghoursanddatesofservice.
4.2 InfectionControl
Withgrowingconcernabout possiblecrossinfectionfromhome oxygenequipmentfrom
onehome carepatient to another, aclarification onthistopic isnecessary. Theorgan-

Tuberculosis cansurviveoutsidethehumanbody,butitsmodeof transmissionisby
dropletnuclei. Wheninfectedindividuals cough,theyreleasedroplet nucleiintotheair,
andthese carrytheTuberculosisorganism. Thesedroplet nucleimay bebreathed inby
anotherperson, butprolonged exposureto theinfected personis usuallynecessaryfor
infectiontooccur.
HIVandViralHepatitis arebothvirusesthatare notlivingcells themselvesbutcan
duplicatewhenin aliving“host” cell. Bothofthese organismsareusually passedonby
person-to-personcontact, and both need tobein the human body tosurvive. Once
outsidethe body, virusesdonotsurvive.
4.3 Cleaning and Preparing for New Patient Use
Whenyou removeLifeStylefroma patient’shome,always detachand disposeof the
usednasalcannula. CleantheexteriorofLifeStylewithamild householdcleaner
appliedwith adamp cloth orsponge. Pay specialattention to theoxygen outletfor the
cannulaconnection tomake sureit remainsfree ofdust,water, andparticles. Be careful
nottogetanyliquidintotheinteriorofthe unit.
Next,cleanthe exteriorwitha commonchemicaldisinfectant beforeanyother patient
usestheunit. Do notuseliquiddirectlyon theLifeStyleunit toclean it.

Alistofundesirablechemicalagentsincludes,butisnotlimitedto,thefollowing,
accordingtothe plasticmanufacturer: alcohol andalcohol-based products(isopropyl
alcohol),concentratedchlorine-basedproducts(ethylene chloride),and oil-based
products(Pine-Sol, Lestoil). These arenot to beused to cleantheplastic housingof
LifeStyle. Thesechemicalsandthecleanersthatcontainthemwillcrystallizethe plastic
andbreak downthe plastic’smolecular properties.
Cleanthe airintake /gross particlefilter withwarm soapywater betweeneach patient’s
use. Thepatients should beinstructedto clean thisfilter at least onceper week, de-
pendingontheenvironment,duringnormaloperation.
Changethe feltfilter after3,000 hoursof use.
Changethe product filterafter 3,000 hoursof use. It isnotnecessary to changethis
filterbetweenpatients evenifthepreviouspatient hadacommunicable diseaseor
infection.
AllowLifeStyletoair dry,andthenretestoxygenconcentration beforeyou returnthe
unittoyour inventory.
