Power requirements for electrical equipment differ from area to area.
Please ensure that your machine meets the power requirements in
your area.
If in doubt, consult a qualified electrician.
120V, 60 Hz for USA and Canada
220V, 50 Hz for Europe except UK
240V, 50 Hz for UK and Australia
110V—120V/220V—240V, 50/60 Hz switchable for other countries.
Voltage conversion
Models for Canada, USA, Europe, UK and Australia are not equipped
with this facility. Each machine is preset at the factory according to
destination, but some machines can be set to 110V, 120V, 220V or
240V as required. If your machine’s voltage can be converted:
1. Disconnect the power cord.
2. Move the voltage selector located on the cabinet, under the plat-
ter, with a screwdriver so that the marker is below the voltage for
your area.

Watch out! You might get an electric shock.
@ Never touch the plug with wet hands.

@ Only let a qualified professional repair or reassemble the Akai AP-M7. An unauthor-
ized person might touch the internal parts and receive a serious electric shock.
e Never allow a child to put anything, especially metal, into the Akai AP-M7.
Protect the Akai AP-M7 too.
@ Use only a household AC power source. Never use a DC power source.
@ Make sure that the power consumption of each component does not exceed the wat-
tage specified on the rear panel.
If water is spilled on the Akai AP-M7, disconnect and call your dealer.
Make sure that the Akai AP-M7 is well ventilated and away from direct sunlight.
® To avoid damages to the internal circuits and the external surface, keep away from
heat (stoves, etc.).
e@ Avoid using spray type insecticide near the Akai AP-M7. It can damage the finish and

@ To avoid damaging the finish, never use alcohol, paint thinner or other similar chemi-
cals to clean the Akai AP-M7.
@ Place the Akai AP-M7 on a flat and solid surface.
Be careful when you move the Akai AP-M7.
Unplug the output cord and the power cord.
Lock the tone arm to the tone arm rest.
To protect the insulators, lift the Akai AP-M7 and then move it.
When transporting the Akai AP-M7 over a long distance, place the Akai AP-M7 in its
original box wrapped in its protective wrappers.

Read Instructions — Ali the safety and operating instructions
should be read before the equipment is operated.
. Retain Instructions — The safety and operating instructions
should be retained for future reference.
Heed Warnings — All warnings on the equipment and in the
operating instructions should be adhered to.
- Follow Instructions — All instructions for operating and use
should be followed.
Water and Moisture — The equipment should not be used near
water — for example, near a bathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink,
laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool, etc.
Carts and Stands — The equipment should be used only with a
cart or stand that is recommended by Akai.
Wall or Ceiling Mounting — Akai does not recommend mount-
ing the equipment on a wall or a ceiling.
Ventilation — The equipment should be situated so that its loca-
tion or position does not interfere with its proper ventilation.
For example, the equipment should not be situated on a bed,
sofa, rug, or similar surface that may block the ventilation open-
ings; or, placed in a built-in installation, such as a bookcase or
cabinet that may impede the flow of air through the ventilation
openings.
Heat — The equipment should be situated away from heat
sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other equip-
ments (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
Power Sources — The equipment should be connected to a pow-

static charges. Section 810 of the Nationa! Electric Code, ANSI/
NFPA No. 70-1981, provides information with respect to pro-
per grounding of the mast and supporting structure, grounding
of the lead-in wire to an antenna discharge unit, size of ground-
ing conductors, location of antenna-discharge unit, connection
to grounding electrodes, and requirements for the grounding
electrode. See Figure 1.
Nonuse Periods — The power cord of the equipment should be
unplugged from the outlet when left unused for a long period
of time.
Object and Liquid Entry — Care should be taken so that objects
do not fall and liquids are not spilled into the enclosure through
openings.
Damage Requiring Service — The equipment should be serviced
by qualified service personne! when:
A. The power-supply cord or the plug has been damaged; or
B. Objects have fallen, or liquid has been spilled into the equip-
ment; or
C. The equipment has been exposed to rain; or
D. The equipment does not appear to operate normally or ex-
hibits a marked change in performance; or
E. The equipment has been dropped, or the enclosure damaged.
Servicing — The user should not attempt to service the equip-
ment beyond that described in the operating instructions. All
other servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel.

Features
The Akai AP-M7 is a mid-sized turntable equipped with a micro-com-
puter. Use it in combination with the other components in the Clarity
Series and you will have an excellent hi-fi system.
Excellent playback thanks to:
e The dynamic-balance linear tracking tone arm is a high perform-
ance tone arm which allows the cartridge to perform at its peak.
Furthermore, changing the cartridge is simple with no need for
adjustments thanks to the plug-in connector.
@ The VM cartridge with plug-in connector has superb trackability.
e Stable and accurate platter rotation due to FG servo direct drive
system which uses a thin, high torque, brushless discolith coil
motor.
You don’t have to set the record size and speed yourself.
The micro-computer in combination with the optical sensor will set
the record speed and size for you automatically.
Repeat playback is very quick.
In Akai AP-M7’s quick repeat, the tone arm returns to the lead-in
groove (beginning of the record) and not to the tone arm rest.
The Akai AP-M7 has many features to protect the stylus _
so that it will give you many hours of good music.
e Auto lift-up system
The auto lift-up system will lift the tone arm when the power is
cut during playback.
You can operate the Akai AP-M7 with the dust cover closed.
All the controls and indicators you need to operate the Akai AP-M7
are located on the front panel. Therefore, you can keep the dust cover
closed to keep out the dust.

the cabinet.

Tum off all the components before con-
necting.
Connect the output cord to the PHONO
jacks.
Make sure that you connect the white
PIN-plug to the left (L-white) jack and
the red PIN-plug to the right (R-red)
jack.
Connect, the ground wire to the ground’
( ) terminal.
If connecting to the Akai Integrated
Amplifier AM-M7, connect the auto
function control cord to the AUTO
FUNCTION CONTROL PHONO jack.
* Make sure that the ground wire is connect-
ed securely to the ground (7 ) terminal.
If it is not, auto function control will not
function properly.
After you have.connected everything
else SEES
Connect the power cord to a household
AC outlet.
AUTO FUNCTION
Mettez tous les éléments hors circuit

ment connecte a la borne de terre ( 77).
S’il ne l’est pas, la commande de fonction
automatique ne fonctionnera pas correcte-
ment.

You must manually play back
some records.
The micro-computer detects the exist-
ance of a record and then sets the
record speed and size. This is done by
detecting the amount of light passing
through the record sensing slots. There-
fore, when you use transparent, colored
(red, blue, white, etc.) or irregular sized
(not 30 cm or 17 cm) records, the
micro-computer cannot detect the cor-
rect amount of light. For such records,
play back the record manually. Refer to
page 10.
When you will have to set the
speed yourself
@ When you want to play back 30 cm
record at 45 rpm.
@ When you want to play back 17 cm
record at 33-1/3 rpm.
Set the speed with the SPEED button
after depressing the START/CUT (S/C)
button.

Vous devez reproduire manuelle-
ment certains disques.
Le micro-ordinateur détecte I’existence
d’un disque ainsi que sa vitesse et sa
dimension. Ceci est effectué par détec-
tion de la quantité de lumiére passant
par les fentes du senseur de disque.
Lorsque vous utilisez des disques trans-
parents, colorés (rouges, bleus, blancs,
etc.) ou de dimensions non standard
(autres que 30 ou 17 cm), le micro-
ordinateur ne peut pas détecter la quan-
tité correcte de lumiére. Pour ces dis-
ques, réglez tout d’abord la vitesse avec
le sélecteur de vitesse (SPEED), et re-
produisez-les manuellement. Voir page
10.
Vous devrez régler vous-méme la
vitesse:
@ Lorsque vous voulez reproduire des
disques de 30 cm 4 45 tpm.
@ Lorsque vous voulez reproduire des
disques de 17 cm 4 33-1/3 tpm.
Réglez la vitesse 4 I’aide du sélecteur de
vitesse (SPEED) aprés avoir appuyé
sur la touche START/CUT (S/C).
Place the record on the platter.
At the end of the record, the tone arm
will return to the standby position and
the platter will stop rotating.

The tone arm will move the stylus over
to the lead-in groove (beginning of the

Changing the cartridge

On stylus pressure
The Akai AP-M7 can be used with any car-
tridge which has a (4P-marked connector
without adjustment. However, if for some
reason (temperature, etc.) the stylus skips or
there is distortion in the sound, you must
adjust the stylus pressure. There is a stylus
pressure adjustor located below the tone arm
section, Contact the nearest Akai service cen-
ter before attempting adjustment. If you do
not set the stylus pressure correctly, you will
not be able to enjoy the full capability of the
cartridge as well as that of the Akai AP-M7.
Replacing the stylus
The attached stylus should be changed after
approximately 400 hours of use. Remove the
cartridge from the tone arm and then replace
a stylus with the Akai stylus RS-7 (option-

Dust Cover
A linear tracking tone arm and a record detector are built
into the dust cover of the Akai AP-M7. Therefore, if you
open the dust cover while a record is playing, the tone arm
will automatically return to the Standby position.
On the dynamic balanced linear tracking tone arm
The Akai AP-M7 has a linear tracking tone arm. The linear
tracking tone arm moves across the record in a straightline
towards the center of the record. Just like the cutter head
which cuts the grooves in the record. The linear tracking
tone arm is driven by an accurate optical sensor and a special
servo circuit. Therefore, the cartridge is always positioned
directly over the grooves and tracking and error and inside
force (force which tries to pull the tone arm inward, towards
the center of the record) are almost nil. The cartridge can
thus perform at its full capability. Also, as the tone arm is of
a dynamic balanced type, it can trace the record accurately
even when the Akai AP-M7 is placed at a slight angle.
Manual Mode
If you set the MANU/AUTO selector
to MANUAL, the unit will operate com-
pletely as a manual device. This means
that the tone arm lead-in-correction
safety device is deactivated, which
allows you to raise and lower the needle
anywhere along the path of the tone
arm, simply by pressing the UP DOWN
buttons. (This does not include the
Stand-by position.) However, if the
power should fail while the unit is play-
ing a record, a safety device will act to
raise the tone arm.

Away from television, speaker system, amplifier’s trans-
former, etc. These equipments generate signals or vibra-
tions which can be picked up by the stylus.
Keep the records and the stylus clean.
Dirty records and stylus can lead to distortion and make
the stylus jump. Therefore, clean the records and the
stylus with the optional accessory Cleaning Kit CK-600.
Don’t bump the Akai AP-M7.
This can make the stylus jump, leading to damages to the
stylus and the record.
Let’s protect the speaker system from damages.
Set the amplifier’s volume control to zero when lifting or
lowering the tone arm during playback.
Do not touch the lead wires terminals while the amplifier
is turned on.

the convenient auto function control.
Just by depressing the START/CUT
(S/C) button or by moving the tone arm

MS5’s input source selector will be set
automatically to PHONO.
The auto function control sends a con-
trol signal to the amplifier which is then
detected by a micro-computer. This
micro-computer then sets the amplifier’s
input source selector to PHONO. There-
fore, there is no need to set the ampli-
fier’s input source selector yourself.
Furthermore, by using the Akai AM-
M7/MS5 in combination with the Akai
Stereo Cassette Deck HX-M7R/M5 and
FM AM Tuner AT-M5/L which are also
equipped with auto function controls,
