The Radio over IP (ROIP) unit is an integral
product in Ascom’s palette of military
communication equipment. It is a general
purpose standalone device that connects
communication equipment to an IP network
(local area network or wide area network) using
RoIP technology. It is used for the remote
operation of Professional Mobile Radio (PMR)
devices and EUROCOM terminals access.
Compliant with military standards, the ROIP
Radio over IP unit is constructed to the same
quality criteria as the well-known family of
Ascom openAccess Nodes. Used primarily in
military environments, Ascom network
communication systems are equally adaptable
for international peace keeping missions and
crisis management tasks.
The Ascom radio over IP unit uses radio over Internet protocol (RoIP)
technology to send and receive digital voice and signaling messages. It has
two areas of application: offering both remote operation of tactical radio
terminals as well as operation of EUROCOM terminals over LAN
connections.
Remote operation of tactical radio devices is useful in situations where
a handset operator, for personnel protection considerations, is stationed at
a distance from the radio equipment. This is often the case in ad-hoc
command post deployments.
The operation of EUROCOM terminals over a LAN is a practical solution
in installations with an existing LAN infrastructure. In both configurations
Ascom ROIP digitizes analogue voice signals and transfers them by means
of VoIP technology to the remote station. Features include the ability to
transmit and receive digital voice; data and status of control lines such as
Push-to-Talk are forwarded transparently.
Ascom ROIP R (ruggedized version) is robust and resilient to extreme
environmental conditions of isolated ad-hoc deployments. The ultra rugged
enclosure is hermetically sealed to withstand severe humidity and dust
exposure as well as extreme temperatures.
Each Ascom ROIP supports two radios. It’s also available in a non
ruggedized 19’’ housing -- Ascom ROIP 19” -- incorporating multiple ROIP
units for a total of 12 radio links. A fax gateway is included in this
configuration.
