Before you make your first call you will need
to set up your handset and download the
BT Softphone software.
Follow the simple instructions in ‘Getting

Getting started
Note
No battery is required. Power is supplied by the computer through the USB cable.
Install the software
If you already have BT Softphone installed on your computer, please check the version
number in the Help About menu. If you have a version earlier than 3.1 you will need to
download and install the latest release in order to use your BT Agile.
Note
You must install the software before plugging in the handset
1. Turn on your PC and ensure it is connected to the internet.
2. Open the web browser and go to the BT Softphone home page:
www.btsoftphone.com
3. Click on the Download icon near the bottom of the page.
4. Follow the instructions on the webpage to download and install
BT Softphone.
If you do not yet have a BT Softphone account use your web browser to go to
www.btsoftphone.com and register – it’s FREE and only takes a couple of minutes!

Getting started
Connecting your BT Agile for the first time
1. Make sure your PC is switched on and connected to the internet.
2. Plug your BT Agile into a USB port on your computer.
3. Double click the BT Softphone icon on your desktop.
4. Login with your BTSoftphone account user name and password.
If required click the Remember username and Remember password
boxes so you do not have to enter these each time. You can also select
Sign in automatically if you want your BT Softphone software to run
automatically each time you switch on your computer.
If you do not have a BT Softphone account, you can set one up for free by
clicking on Create,at the bottom of the window and following the
prompts.
5. Click Login toconnect
to BT Softphone.

at the top of the BT
Softphone screen.

Using your BT Agile
Log in
1. Make sure your PC is connected to the internet.
2. Plug your BT Agile into a USB port on your computer.
3. Double click the BT Softphone icon on your desktop.
4. If required, enter your BT Softphone account user name and password.
5. Click Loginto connect to BT Softphone.
Note
Occasionally, following the initial installation, Windows may select the BT Agile instead
of your PC speakers as the default device for playing all sounds on (eg music tracks).
This setup can be changed using the Audio devices menu in Windows Control Panel.
BT Softphone sounds are set separately in the Softphone options menu, see page 17.
Open the screen from the system tray
1. When the BT Softphone is minimised in the system tray, press the
button on your BT Agile.
User name and password
When you subscribe to BT Softphone you will receive a user name and password.
You will need to enter these in order to log on to your service.
Note
When you log in, you can tick the Remember my name and Remember my password
boxes so you do not have to enter them each time.
If you have a Broadband Talk account you can link it to your BT Softphone account,
conveniently allowing calls to be charged to your BT Broadband Talk account so Pay
As You Go top ups arenot needed. For more info, go to www.btsoftphone.com
Automatic log on
If you tick the Sign in automatically boxas well, your BTSoftphone will automatically be
started and logged on whenever you switch on your computer.
WARNING
BT Agile and BT Softphone are not a replacement for your ordinary phone. This equipment
is not designed for making calls when the power fails or broadband connection is lost.
Alternative arrangements should be made for access to emergency services.

Using your BT Agile
Search alphabetically
Use your computer keyboard to search alphabetically by entering the first letter of the
name. The first name that starts with this letter or the nearest letter in the alphabet will be
displayed. You can now refine your search by scrolling or on your keyboard.
Dial a number
1. Use the handset to enter the phone number.
The number format must include the area code and number,
e.g. 0123123.
If you make a mistake press to clear all numbers dialled.
2. Press to dial.
Topping up your account
Calls to BTSoftphone addresses are free and calls to landlines,
mobiles or international numbersareavailable at low cost rates
(see Help menu). In order to make chargeable calls, you must
either link your Softphone account to a Broadband Talk account (see
www.btsoftphone.com) or top up your pay as you go (PAYG) account.
To top up your PAYG account, open the pay-as-you-go window at the
bottom of the Softphone screen, log in using your Softphone username
and passwordand follow the top up instructions to add credit to your
account using a credit or debit card.
Add a contact
1. Using the mouse, click Contacts on the toolbar,then Add Contact.
Or click on the Contacts icon on the Contacts screen.
2. Enter your contact details.
3. Click Save & Close.

Dial a contact
1. Scroll and on the handset to select a contact.
Contact groups can be opened and closed by pressing the when
the group folder is highlighted.
2. Press on the handset to dial the primary number for the
selected contact.
Note
If you do not have 'Call immediately' selected in the Options/Application menu
(see page 15), the first time you press Send,the contact number will be displayed in
the call details panel and you have to press Send again to make the call.
3. If you have multiple numbers for a contact, you may use the mouse
toselect an alternative number before you make the call from the
window that opens when the contact is selected.
End a call
1. Press .
Answer a call
Handset and/or PC speaker rings (depending on device set up – see page
17). When a call comes in, your handset rings and the call light flashes.

Note
The ringer volume level can be increased in the Options Devices menu. In addition, using
the same menu, Softphone can be set to ring through the PC speakers to increase the
volume further, see pages 16 & 17.
Reject a call
1. If you don’t want to take a call, when the phone rings, press .

Using your BT Agile
In call options
Adjust earpiece volume
During a call you can adjust the volume by using the mouse on the
BTSoftphone window:
1. Click on and slide up or down to increase or decrease the volume.
Or, by using the handset:
1. Press to increase or to decrease the volume.
Secrecy
You can mute the microphone so you can talk to someone else nearby
without your caller hearing you.
1. During a call, press . Your caller cannot hear you. The indicator LED
will flash slowly.
2. Press again to resume your call.
Multiple calls
Your BT Agile has the ability to hold two calls on the same line
simultaneously or initiate a 3-way conference:
Put a call on hold – during a call, press and hold the number
button for 2 seconds. The caller will be put on hold and hear music.
Call a second number – put the first caller on hold then either using the
or buttons on the handset to select a contact from your
contacts listor dial direct from the keypad.

Using your BT Agile
Switch between two calls – along press on the number button will
put you through to the other caller and the previous caller will be put
on hold and hear music.
End the call you are on at any time – by pressing . You will then
automatically be put through to the other caller who was on hold.
Initiate a 3-way call – with two calls open, use your mouse to click on
Conference on the call window.
Availability status
Use the mouse to set your status for taking softphone calls. Your caller
will see this message when they ring you if they are calling from a BT
Softphone account.
1. Click Availability on the BTSoftphone window.
2. Click on an option to select:
Voicemail
Your BTBroadband Talk Voicemail service can act likean answering
machine and record messages from callers. For further details and to
subscribe to Voicemail, please call 1571. Only available if your account
is linked to a BT Broadband Talk account.

Listen to voicemail
1. Dial 1571 to listen to your messages.
2. Press to exit voicemail.
Window options
Minimise BT Softphone window
1. The icon will minimise your BT Softphone window to the taskbar.
2. Press to maximise the BT Softphone window again.
Close window
1. Press Xin the top right corner with mouse.
Note
When you close the window,you are still logged in toSoftphone. The availability icon
appears in windows tray by the clock, maximise again by pressing the button.

1. Click on Softphone,then click on My Profile.
2. Enter your contact details and other information. This can be made
available in the BTPhone Book for other BTBroadband Talk users.
Open options menu
1. Click on Softphone,then click on Options.
Application
1. In the Options menu, click Application to choose basic set up options:
Click toactivate/deactivate Autolaunch to start BT Softphone
automatically every time you switch your computer on.

BT Softphone toolbar
Click to activate/deactivate Always open a new message in its
own window.
Click toactivate/deactivate Call immediately once a phone number
is selected.
Click to choose how pressing ‘Enter’ will work when Messaging.
Enter your preferred Set status to idle time.
2. Click OK to set your options or Cancel to return to the main screen
without saving options.
Alerts & Sounds
1. In the Options menu, click Alerts & Sounds tochoose basic set
up options:
Click to open the drop down menu Use sound for to select the sound
event you want.
Click on the By playing drop down menu tochoose a sound.
Click on Import Sounds tobrowse your computer or the Internet
for sounds saved in .wav format.
Click to activate/deactivate Show alert box and use the drop down
menu tochoose when you want the alert box to be shown.
Click to activate/deactivate Mute all sounds.
This will stop all alert sounds.
Privacy
Use these options to block or accept calls and messages from selected
numbersand contacts.

Devices
If you change your handset or use a headset, you can adjust these
settings tosuit your device.
1. In the Options menu, click Devices.
Choose from the following Options:
Speaker and microphone should both be set to ‘BT Agile handset’ in
order to use BT Agile to make and receive calls.
Headset Mode.Click the drop down menus for Speaker and
Microphone and select the option you want. Click OK to confirm.
Speakerphone Mode.Click the drop down menus for Speaker and
Microphone and select the option you want. Click OK toconfirm.
Phone Ring Device.Click the drop down menu for Ring Device and
select the option you want. Select BT Agile handset for the BT Agile to
ring on incoming calls. Move the slider for Ring Volume to adjust the
ringer volume. Click OK to confirm.
Check 'Also ring PC speaker' for incoming calls to ring through PC
speaker as well (ensure they are turned on).
Camera.Click the drop down menu and select the device you want.
Click OK toconfirm.
Camera
Torun a web cam ensure your computer meets the minimum requirements.
See ‘System Requirements, page 3.
Network
Displays the Network Connection Speed. Click OK toconfirm.

BT Softphone toolbar
Diagnostics
Click on the box to activate/deactivate Enable diagnostic logging. Under
Destination,enter the location where you want your diagnostic log to
be saved – if different from the default choice. Click OK to confirm.
Advanced
You should only need to adjust these settings if advised to do so by the
Helpline or Helpdesk. Click on the boxes to activate/deactivate Reduce
echo’s from speakers or Use slower but more compatible video
format.Click OK to confirm.
BTBroadband Talk / Softphone account
1. Click to open the BT Broadband Talk / Softphone web page to access
your account information.
BTDigital Vault
1. Click BT Digital Vault toopen the web page to safely and securely store
precious photos and video clips.
Sign out
1. Click on Sign Out to close the BT Softphone screen.
2. Click on the availability icon in the system tray to log in again.
Exit
1. Click Exit tolog out of your BTSoftphone service.

View tab
This lets you adjust the look of your BT Softphone window.
1. Click on View.
2. Click to activate/deactivate the window you want:
Contacts tab
Open Contacts
1. Click on Contacts and select the option you want.
Add Contact.Click and enter details of a new contact.
Delete Contact.Click and select a contact from the list you want to
delete.
Add a group.Click then enter a contact group name, e.g. Choir.
Torename a group, click on a group from the list then click on Contacts
then Rename a group.
To delete a group, delete the individual contacts, select the group and
click on Contacts then Delete Group.
Import Contacts.Use the drop down menu to select where you want to
importcontacts from then click Nextand follow the on-screen prompts.

BT Softphone toolbar
Export Contacts.Use the drop down menu to select where you
want to export a contact from then click Next and follow the
on-screen prompts.
Actions tab
Open the Actions tab
1. Click on Actions and select the option you want.
Redial.Move the mouse pointer over Redial and then click on an entry
in the redial list.
Hide my number for this call.Click on the Actions tab then click on
Hide my number for this call to activate. Click again to de-activate.
When active, the hide entryicon is displayed in the phone number box.
Then enter the number you want and dial as normal.
Help tab
Open the Help tab
1. Click on Help and select the option you want.
Help.Click to open the Softphone FAQs website page.
Call Charges.Click toopen the call charges website page.
Report abuse.Click to reportabusive telephone or video calls.
About.Click todisplay your BTSoftphone softwareversion and build
reference number.
