Exif Print

This printer supports ExifPrint.

Exif Print is a standard for enhancing the communication between digital cameras and print-

ers. By connecting to an Exif Print-compliant digital camera, the camera’s image data at the

time of shooting is used and optimized, yielding extremely high quality prints.

International ENERGY STAR®Program

As an ENERGY STAR®Partner, Canon Inc. has determined that this product meets the

ENERGY STAR®guidelines for energy efficiency.

The International ENERGY STAR®Office Equipment Program is an interna-

tional program that promotes energy saving through the penetration of

energy efficient computers and other office equipment. The program backs

the development and dissemination of products with functions that effectively

Thank you for purchasing a Canon Inkjet Printer.

This Quick Start Guide uses the following symbols to indicate important information. Always observe

the instructions indicated by these symbols.

Installation Space

When loading paper in the Front Tray, the paper sticks out from the back of the printer. Keep a space

of 40 cm / 15.7 inches for this purpose behind the printer.

There are wheels on the back corners of the printer. Lift up the front of the printer to move it back and

forth.

Preparing the Printer

Be sure to read your setup sheet first for setting up your printer and getting it ready for use.

Unpack the printer

Please confirm the included items against the illustration printed on the lid of the packing box.

1Turn on the printer.

2Install the Print Head.

3Install the ink tanks.

4Load paper.

In the following process, you will be required to perform the Print Head Alignment, and you

will need two sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper loaded in the Auto Sheet Feeder.

Important

zIn Windows, do not connect the USB cable until after the software is installed.

zA USB cable is necessary to connect the printer with your computer.

Caution

Be sure to remove the tapes before you turn on the printer.

The tape position is subject to change.

Caution

Do not touch internal parts other than the Print Head Lock Lever.

Important

If the Top Cover is open for more than ten minutes, the Print Head Holder moves to the right side.

In this case, close the Top Cover, and open it again.

Notes

zThere might be some transparent or light color ink on the inside of the bag the print head comes

in, or the inside of the protective cap - this has no effect on print quality. Be careful not to get ink

on yourself when handling these items.

zDo not reattach the protective cap once it has been removed.

Important

zEnsure that all the ink tanks are installed in the correct position, matching the label. The printer

cannot be used unless all the ink tanks are installed.

zWhen the POWER lamp flashes blue and the printer vibrates, the printer is shaking the ink

tanks. Once you have installed the ink tanks and have closed the Top Cover, wait for about 2

minutes 30 seconds until the POWER lamp stops flashing and remains lit blue and the printer

has stopped making operating noises before proceeding. Do not open the Top Cover while the

printer is operating (the POWER lamp is flashing blue).

zDo not squeeze the side of ink tanks as this may cause the ink to leak out and stain your clothes

and hands.

zDo not reattach the protective cap once you have removed it.

zThe ALARM lamp on the printer flashes orange if an ink tank is not installed properly. Open the

Top Cover and make sure that position of all the ink tanks match the label.

zWhen loading paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder, ensure that the FRONT FEED button is not lit.

When it is lit, set the Front Tray to its normal printing position. For details about the position of

the Front Tray, refer to “Returning the Front Tray to Its Normal Printing Position” in the User’s

Guide on-screen manual.

zAlways load paper in portrait orientation. Loading paper in landscape orientation can cause the

paper to be jammed.

Installing the Printer Driver

Notes on the Installation Process

zIf the Select Language screen appears, select a language, then click Next.

zIf the Select Your Place of Residence screen appears, select your place of residence, then

click Next.

zThere are two ways of installing the printer driver and other software:

Easy Install: the items included on the Setup CD-ROM are installed automatically

Custom Install: you can select particular items to install

zWhen the User Registration screen appears, click Register. If your computer is connected

to the Internet, the on-screen instructions to register your product will appear.

zRegistration can also be performed from the icon on the desktop after installation is completed.

Notes on the Print Head Alignment

zPrint Head Alignment will take about nine minutes to complete. Do not open the Top Cover

while printing.

zSome parts of the first pattern that is printed will be faint.

zIf the pattern is not printed successfully, refer to “Eleven flashes” in “The ALARM Lamp

Flashes Orange” in the User’s Guide on-screen manual. When you align the print head again,

the pattern that is printed is different from the pattern on the setup sheet.

zWhen installing the printer driver in Windows XP or Windows 2000, log on to the system as a member

of the Administrators group.

zBefore installing the driver, disable all anti-virus programs and automatically loading programs.

zIf the screen on the right appears automatically, remove the USB

cable connected to your computer. Next, click Cancel to quit the

screen and turn off the printer. Then start the installation process

again. For details on the installation process, refer to your setup

sheet.

zAdobe®Photoshop®CS, Adobe Photoshop CS2, or Digital

Photo Professional must be installed to use Easy-PhotoPrint Pro.

zWhen a message asking for your confirmation to restart your

computer appears during the installation process, click OK. The

system is restarted automatically.

zWe would appreciate it if you would take part in the PIXMA

Extended Survey Program regarding the use of Canon printers.

For details, refer to the on-screen instructions.

zIf the connection is not recognized, refer to “Cannot Install Printer

Driver or an Application Program” in the User’s Guide on-screen manual.

Notes

zDo not remove or insert the USB cable during installation, as this may result in the computer or printer

not operating normally.

zBefore installing the driver, disable all anti-virus programs and automatically loading programs or

remove them from your system folder.

zAdobe Photoshop CS, Adobe Photoshop CS2, or Digital Photo Professional must be installed to use

Easy-PhotoPrint Pro.

zWhen you perform the Print Head Alignment and cannot find your printer name in Printer List, click

Add to add the printer. For details, refer to the Printer Setup Utility Help in the Mac®Help.

zTo install the User’s Guide on-screen manual in other language than the installed one, double-click the

Manual folder in Setup CD-ROM, Canon folder, and then copy a language folder to your hard disk.

on the desktop, or click Start and select All Programs (or Programs), Canon Pro9500 series

For the Best Print Result

To maintain optimal print quality, press the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer about once a

week to shake the ink tanks. For details, refer to “Shaking the Ink Tanks Periodically” in “Replacing

an Ink Tank” in the User’s Guide on-screen manual.

zMicrosoft®Internet Explorer 5.0 or later must be installed.

zThe on-screen manual may not be displayed properly depending on your operating system or

Internet Explorer version. We recommend that you keep your system up to date with Windows

Update.

If you installed the User’s Guide on-screen manual from the Manual folder in the Setup CD-ROM, open

the folder in which you copied the User’s Guide on-screen manual and double-click top.htm.

Basic Operations

Adjusting the print settings according to your needs allows you to produce better quality prints.

Printing with Windows

1Turn on the printer, then load the paper.

For details, refer to “Loading Paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder” or “Loading Paper in the Front

Tray” in the User’s Guide on-screen manual.

2From your application’s File menu, select Print.

3Ensure that your printer is selected, then click Preferences (or Properties).

4Specify the required settings and click OK.

Ensure that Paper Source is set to the position in

which you loaded the paper in step 1.

5To start printing, click Print (or OK).

Printing will start in a few moments. Do not open the Top Cover while printing.

Caution

zIf you detect smoke, unusual smells or strange noises around the printer, immediately switch the printer

off and always unplug the printer. Contact your local Canon service representative.

zTo avoid injury, never put your hand or fingers inside the printer while it is printing.

Notes

zIf prints are unclear or specific colors are not reproduced even if there is plenty of ink, print head

nozzles may be clogged. Print the nozzle check pattern, check the results, then perform print head

cleaning. For details about maintenance, refer to “When Printing Becomes Faint or Colors are

Incorrect” in the User’s Guide on-screen manual.

zWhen printing in grayscale, depending on an image, the printing troubles may occur on the top and/or

bottom edges of the paper such as uneven coloration or white streaks. In this case, we recommend

printing with the top and bottom margins of the paper set to more than 45 mm / 1.77 inches using the

Easy-PhotoPrint Pro provided on the Setup CD-ROM or your page layout software.

When using a page layout software or the like, prepare paper whose longer side is at least 90 mm /

3.54 inches longer than the length of the image, then print it with the top and bottom margins set to

more than 45 mm / 1.77 inches. For details on how to use the Easy-PhotoPrint Pro, refer to the Photo

Application Guide on-screen manual.

zYou can use Easy-PhotoPrint or Easy-PhotoPrint Pro to easily do print operations when printing

photographs. Easy-PhotoPrint and Easy-PhotoPrint Pro are provided on the Setup CD-ROM. For

details on how to use Easy-PhotoPrint and Easy-PhotoPrint Pro, refer to the Photo Application Guide

on-screen manual.

zDepending on your application program, operations may differ. For details, refer to the instruction

manual of your application.

zThe steps described in this section are for printing in Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Basic Operations

Printing with Macintosh

1Turn on the printer, then load the paper.

For details, refer to “Loading Paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder” or “Loading Paper in the Front

Tray” in the User’s Guide on-screen manual.

2From your application’s File menu, select Page Setup.

3Select your printer name from Format for.

4Select the desired paper size in Paper Size.

5Click OK.

6From your application’s File menu, select

Print.

7Select Quality & Media from the pop-up

menu.

8Specify the required settings.

Ensure that Paper Source is set to the position in

which you loaded the paper in step 1.

9Click Print.

Printing will start in a few moments. Do not open the Top Cover while printing.

zDepending on your application program, operations may differ. For details, refer to the instruction

manual of your application.

zThe steps described in this section are for printing in Mac OS X v.10.4.x.

Printing Photographs Directly from a

PictBridge Compliant Device

Connecting a PictBridge compliant device such as a digital camera, camcorder or mobile phone to

the printer allows you to print recorded images directly without using a computer.

A device with this mark is PictBridge-compatible.

Connecting a PictBridge Compliant Device

To connect a PictBridge compliant device to this printer, use a USB cable recommended by the

device’s manufacturer.

1Turn on the printer and load the paper in the printer.

When printing on paper other than 14" x 17" / 355.6 x 431.8 mm, always load paper in the

Auto Sheet Feeder.

Refer to “Loading Paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder” in the User’s Guide on-screen manual.

14" x 17" / 355.6 x 431.8 mm paper should be loaded in the Front Tray.

Refer to “Loading Paper in the Front Tray” in the User’s Guide on-screen manual.

2Connect the PictBridge compliant device to the printer.

(1) Ensure that the device is turned off.

(2) Connect the device to the printer using the USB cable recommended by the

manufacturer of the device.

The PictBridge compliant devices turn on automatically when connected to the printer. If

the device does not turn on automatically, turn it on manually.

Note

PictBridge is an industry standard enabling a range of digital photo solutions, including the Direct Printing

of photos from a digital still camera, camcorder or mobile phone* without the need to use a computer. A

device can be connected to this printer for direct printing regardless of the manufacturer or the model as

long as it complies with the PictBridge standard.

* Hereafter, the PictBridge compliant digital camera, digital camcorder, or camera-equipped mobile phone

are collectively called a PictBridge compliant device.

Caution

Do not connect any equipment other than PictBridge compliant devices to the Direct Print Port of the

printer. If you do so, electric shock, fire, or damage to the printer could result.

Notes

zWhen producing photos with the digital device connected to the printer, it is advisable to use the AC

adapter supplied with the device. If you use the device battery, be sure to charge it fully.

zNever disconnect the USB cable during printing unless when explicitly allowed to by the PictBridge

compliant device.

When disconnecting the USB cable between the PictBridge compliant device and printer, follow the

instructions given in the device's instruction manual.

Note

Depending on the model or brand of your PictBridge compliant device, you may have to select a

mode of producing photos before connecting the device.

You may also have to turn on the device or select Play mode manually after connecting the device

to the printer.

Perform necessary operations according to the instruction manual supplied with your device.

(3) Set up the device for Direct Printing.

When the connection between the device and printer has been established, the POWER

lamp on the printer flashes twice.

* The power-on sequence may differ depending on the model or brand of the device.

3Specify the print settings such as paper type and layout.

You can make settings using the menu on the LCD of your PictBridge compliant device.

Select the size and type of paper that you loaded in the printer.

If your PictBridge compliant device does not have setting menu, change the setting from the

computer. For details, see “Setting on the Computer” on page 11.

4Start printing from your PictBridge compliant device.

About PictBridge Print Settings

Settings on a PictBridge Compliant Device

This section describes the print settings on a PictBridge compliant device. When operating the

device, be sure to follow the instructions given in the instruction manual of your PictBridge

compliant device.

* In the following description, names of setting items are given according to those used in

Canon-brand PictBridge compliant devices. Setting item names may be different depending on

the brand or model of your device.

* Some setting items explained below may not be available on some devices. In this case, the

settings made on the computer using the Canon Setup Utility are applied. Also, when some

items are set to Default on a PictBridge compliant device, the computer settings for these items

are applied. For details, see “Setting on the Computer” on page 11.

zPrintable Image Data Format

This printer prints images taken with a DCF (Design rule for Camera File system)-compatible

digital camera*.

zPaper Size and Paper Type Settings

The following sizes and types of printing paper can be used when printing from a PictBridge

compliant device.

*1This setting can be selected only for Canon PictBridge compliant devices (note that it cannot

be selected for some models). If your device does not have this setting, select Photo or

Default in Paper type.

be selected for some models). When Fine Art is selected for Paper type, bordered printing

will be performed even when Borderless is selected for Layout. Also, you cannot print in a 35

mm / 1.38 inches margin along the top and bottom edges (except for the following layouts:

Shooting Info in 20-up layout, 35 mm Film Style Layout, and index).

*4Plain Paper can be selected for Paper type when A4, 8.5" x 11" (Letter), or A3 is selected

for Paper size. When Plain Paper is selected for Paper type, bordered printing will be

performed even when Borderless is selected for Layout.

zLayout Setting

Various layout options are available.

• Bordered/Borderless: You can select whether or not to print an image with a border.

• Shooting Info (Exif Data)*1: You can print shooting info (Exif Data) along with the image. The

following two options are available.

1-up: Prints the shooting info (Exif Data) in the margin of selected individual images.

20-up: Prints 20 images specified with DPOF*2and their shooting info (Exif Data) in list

format on a single sheet of paper.

• 35 mm Film Style Layout (Contact Printing Layout)*1: You can print the multiple images

specified with DPOF*2in a list format that looks like a negative film.

Besides the above options, you can also specify to print an index of images in the DPOF print

settings menu.

*1You can use this option only when A4 or 8.5" x 11" (Letter) is selected for Paper size.

*2DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) is a standard format to record the specified information

regarding images, such as which image or number of copies to print.
