SafetyrulesSAFETYREGULATIONS
TOPREVENTACCIDENTS
Mostaccidentsorinjuriesthatoccurinworkshopsaretheresultofnon--observanceofsimpleandfundamentalsafety
regulations.
Forthisreason,INMOSTCASESTHESEACCIDENTSCANBEAVOIDED:byforeseeingpossiblecausesandcon-
sequentlyactingwiththenecessarycautionandcare.
Accidentsmayoccurwithalltypesofvehicle,regardlessofhowwellitwasdesignedandbuilt.
Acarefulandjudiciousservicetechnicianisthebestguaranteeagainstaccidents.
Preciseobservanceofthemostbasicsafetyruleisnormallysufcienttoavoidmanyseriousaccidents.
DANGER:Nevercarryoutanycleaning,lubricationormaintenanceoperationswhentheengineisrunning.
GENERAL
•Carefullyfollowspeciedrepairandmaintenanceprocedures.
•Donotwearrings,wristwatches,jewellery,unbuttonedorloosearticlesofclothingsuchas:ties,tornclothing,
scarves,openjacketsorshirtswithopenzipsthatmayremainentangledinmovingparts.
Itisadvisedtowearapprovedsafetyclothing,e.g:non--slipfootwear,gloves,safetygoggles,helmets,etc.
•Donotcarryoutrepairoperationswithsomeonesittinginthedriver’sseat,unlessthepersonisatrainedtechnician
whoisassistingwiththeoperationinquestion.
•Operatethevehicleandusetheimplementsexclusivelyfromthedriver’sseat.
•Donotcarryoutoperationsonthevehiclewiththeenginerunning,unlessspecicallyindicated.
•Stoptheengineandensurethatallpressureisrelievedfromhydrauliccircuitsbeforeremovingcaps,covers,valves,
etc.
•Allrepairandmaintenanceoperationsmustbecarriedoutusingextremecareandattention.
•Servicestepsandplatformsusedinaworkshoporintheeldshouldbebuiltincompliancewiththesafetyrulesin
force.
•Disconnectthebatteriesandlabelallcontrolstoindicatethatthevehicleisbeingserviced.Blockthemachineand
allequipmentwhichshouldberaised.
•Donotcheckorllfueltanks,accumulatorbatteries,norusestartingliquidwhensmokingornearnakedames,
astheseuidsareinammable.
•Brakesareinoperativeifmanuallyreleasedforrepairormaintenancepurposes.
Insuchcases,themachineshouldbekeptconstantlyundercontrolusingblocksorsimilardevices.
•Thefuelnozzleshouldalwaysbeincontactwiththellingaperture.Maintainthispositionuntilllingoperations
arecompletedinordertoavoidpossiblesparkscausedbytheaccumulationofstaticelectricity.
•Onlyusespeciedtowingpointsfortowingthetractor,connectpartscarefully.Makesurethatallpinsand/orlocks
aresecuredinpositionbeforeapplyingtraction.
Neverremainnearthetowingbars,cablesorchainsthatareoperatingunderload
•Transportvehiclesthatcannotbedrivenusingatraileroralow--loadingplatformtrolley,ifavailable.
•Whenloadingorunloadingthevehiclefromthetrailer(orothermeansoftransport),selectaatareacapable
ofsustainingthetrailerortruckwheels,rmlysecurethetractortothetruckortrailerandlockthewheelsinthe
position.
•Electricheaters,battery--chargersandsimilarequipmentmustonlybepoweredbyauxiliarypowersupplieswith
efcientgroundinsulationtoavoidelectricalshockhazards.
•Alwaysusesuitablehoistingorliftingdeviceswhenraisingormovingheavyparts.
•Takeextracareifbystandersarepresent.
•Neverpourgasolineordieseloilintoopen,wideandlowcontainers.
•Neverusegasoline,dieseloilorotherinammableliquidsascleaningagents.Usenon-ammablenon-toxicpro-
prietarysolvents.
•Wearsafetygoggleswithsideguardswhencleaningpartswithcompressedair.
•Limittheairpressuretoamaximumof2.1bar(30.5psi),accordingtolocalregulations.

•Donotruntheengineinconnedspaceswithoutsuitableventilation.
•Donotsmoke,usenakedames,orcausesparksintheareawhenfuelllingorhandlinghighlyinammableliquids.
•Neverusenakedamesforlightingwhenworkingonthemachineorcheckingforleaks.
•Allmovementsmustbecarriedoutcarefullywhenworkingunder,onornearthevehicleandwearprotectiveequip-
ment:helmets,gogglesandspecialfootwear.
•Whencarryingoutcheckswiththeenginerunning,requesttheassistanceofanoperatorinthedriver’sseat.The
operatormustmaintainvisualcontactwiththeservicetechnicianatalltimes.
•Ifoperatingoutsidetheworkshop,positionthevehicleonaatsurfaceandlockinposition.Ifworkingonaslope,
lockthevehicleinpositionandmovetoaatareaassoonasissafelypossible.
•Damagedorbentchainsorcablesareunreliable.Donotusethemforliftingortowing.
Alwaysusesuitableprotectivegloveswhenhandlingchainsorcables.
•Chainsshouldalwaysbesafelysecured.Ensurethatfasteningdeviceisstrongenoughtoholdtheloadforeseen.
Nopersonsshouldstopnearthefasteningpoint,trailingchainsorcables.
•MaintenanceandrepairoperationsmustbecarriedoutinaCLEANandDRYarea,eliminateanywateroroilspillage
immediately.
•Donotcreatepilesofoilorgrease--soakedragsastheyrepresentaseriousrehazard;storetheminaclosed
metalcontainer.
Beforestartingthevehicleorimplements,makesurethatthedriver’sseatislockedinpositionandalwayscheck
thattheareaisfreeofpersonsorobstacles.
•Emptypocketsofallobjectsthatmayfallunobservedintothevehiclepartswhendisassembled.
•Inthepresenceofprotrudingmetalparts,useprotectivegogglesorgoggleswithsideguards,helmets,special
footwearandgloves.
•Handleallpartscarefully,donotputyourhandsorngersbetweenmovingparts,wearsuitablesafetyclothing--
safetygoggles,glovesandshoes.
WELDINGOPERATIONS
•Whenwelding,useprotectivesafetydevices:tintedsafetygoggles,helmets,specialoveralls,glovesandfootwear.
Allpersonspresentintheareawhereweldingistakingplacemustweartintedgoggles.
NEVERLOOKATTHEWELDINGARCIFYOUREYESARENOTSUITABLYPROTECTED.
•Wherepossible,removethepartortoolthatrequiresarcweldingfromthetractor.
•Disconnectbothbatteryleads.Isolatethecableendstoavoidcontactwitheachotherandthetractor.
•Positiontheweldergroundclampasnearaspossibletotheareawhereweldingistakingplace.
•Removetheelectroniccontrolunitslocatedonthetractorifweldingistobecarriedoutnearthesecontrolunits.
•Neverallowweldingcablestolayon,nearoracrossanyelectricalwiringorelectroniccomponentwhileweldingis
inprogress.
•Metalcablestendtofraywithrepeateduse.Alwaysusesuitableprotectivedevices(gloves,goggles,etc.)when
handlingcables.
STARTUP
•Neverstarttheengineinconnedspacesthatarenotequippedwithadequateventilationforexhaustgasextraction.
•Neverplacethehead,body,limbs,feet,handsorngersnearfansorrotatingbelts.
ENGINE
•Alwaysloosentheradiatorcapslowlybeforeremovingittoallowanyremainingpressureinthesystemtobedis-
charged.Coolantshouldbetoppeduponlywhentheengineisstoppedoridleifhot.
•Neverllupwithfuelwhentheengineisrunning,especiallyifhot,inordertopreventtheoutbreakofreasaresult
offuelspillage
•Nevercheckoradjustfanbelttensionwhentheengineisrunning.
Neveradjustthefuelinjectionpumpwhenthevehicleismoving.

•Neverlubricatethevehiclewhentheengineisrunning.
ELECTRICALSYSTEMS
•Ifitisnecessarytouseauxiliarybatteries,rememberthatbothendsofthecablesmustbeconnectedasfollows:
(+)with(+)and(-)with(-).
•Avoidshort-circuitingtheterminals.GASRELEASEDFROMBATTERIESISHIGHLYINFLAMMABLE.
•Duringcharging,leavethebatterycompartmentuncoveredtoimproveventilation.
•Nevercheckthebatterychargeusing”jumpers”(metalobjectsplacedontheterminals).
•Avoidsparksoramesnearthebatteryzonetopreventexplosionhazards.
•Beforeservicingoperations,checkforfuelorcurrentleaks.Eliminateanyeventualleaksbeforestartingwork.
•Neverchargebatteriesinconnedspaces.Makesurethatthereisadequateventilationinordertopreventacci-
dentalexplosionhazardsasaresultoftheaccumulationofgasesreleasedduringchargingoperations.
•Alwaysdisconnectthebatterybeforeperforminganykindofservicingontheelectricalsystem.
HYDRAULICSYSTEMS
•Someuidslowlycomingoutfromaverysmallportcanbealmostinvisibleandbestrongenoughtopenetratethe
skin.Checkforleaksusingapieceofcardboard,NEVERUSEHANDS.
•Ifanyliquidpenetratesskintissue,callformedicalaidimmediately
•Seriousskininfectionsmayresultifmedicalattentionisnotgiven.
•Usethespecictoolswhencheckingpressurevaluesonthehydraulicsystem.
WHEELSANDTYRES
•Checkthatthetyresarecorrectlyinatedatthepressurespeciedbythemanufacturer.
Periodicallycheckpossibledamagestotherimsandtyres.
•Standawayfrom(atthesideof)thetirewhencheckinginationpressure.
•Onlycheckpressurewhenthevehicleisunloadedandthetiresarecold,toavoidincorrectreadingsasaresultof
over--pressure.
•Donotre--usepartsofrecoveredwheelsasincorrectweldingorbrazingmayheatthematerial,causingittoweaken
andeventuallydamageorbreakthewheel.
•Nevercut,norweldarimwiththeinatedtyreassembled.
•Whenremovingthewheels,lockboththefrontandrearvehiclewheels.
•Alwayspositionsupportstandswhenraisingthevehicle,inordertoconformtocurrentsafetyregulations.
•Deatethetyrebeforeremovinganyobjectcaughtintothetyretread.
•Neverinatetiresusinginammablegases;thiscouldcauseanexplosionandputoperatorsafetyatrisk.
REMOVALANDRE-FITTING
•Liftandhandleallheavypartsusingsuitableliftingequipmentandmakesurethatallslingsandhooksarecorrectly
secured.
•Handleallpartscarefullyduringliftingoperations,keepaneyeonthepersonnelworkingneartheloadtobelifted.
Neverinserthandsorngersbetweenparts,alwayswearapprovedaccidentpreventionclothing(goggles,gloves
andworkboots).
•Avoidtwistingchainsormetalcablesandalwayswearsafetygloveswhenhandlingcablesorchains.
