Before use
Preparing the plane iron for grinding or honing:
1. Lift the lever cap (5).
2. Remove the plane iron (6) and the cap iron (9).
3. Undo the cap iron screw (3), slide the cap iron (9) upwards and then remove it.
Honing
This plane iron has a primary bevel of 25˚.
Before use, the angle can be honed to 30˚.
Use a good quality flat oilstone.
1. Lay the iron against the oilstone at an
angle of 25° and increase the cutting
angle to 30°.
2. Stroke the iron backwards and
forwards across the oilstone.
3. Finish off the honing by turning the iron
over and stroking it lightly across the
oilstone a few times.
Grinding
It will be necessary to grind the edge of the plane iron if the cutting edge is damaged
or if you need to alter the bevel angle significantly. The plane iron should be ground
using a wet stone bench grinder or other lubricated stone to prevent overheating.
Setting the cap iron
Reverse the steps taken to remove the plane iron and cap iron.
Adjusting the plane
The mouth opening should be adjusted according to the material to be planed.
Fine cabinet work, traverse planing or planing end grain requires a small mouth,
whilst general purpose work requires a larger mouth.
1. Remove the plane iron (6) and the cap iron (9).
2. Slacken the frog fixing screws (11).
3. Replace the plane iron (6) and the cap iron (9) but do not tighten them.
4. Adjust the iron to the correct depth.
5. Move the frog (10) forwards or backwards to set the mouth gap.
6. Remove the plane iron (6) and the cap iron (9).
7. Carefully tighten the frog fixing screws (11).
8. Reassemble all the parts.
