1Introduction
1.1 Scope and definitions
Edwards CXS dry pumps factory fitted with Edwards EH Mechanical boosters are intended to be installed,
commissioned and operated as complete combination systems. This instruction manual details only the specific
information for these pumps operating together as combination systems.
For information relating to the individual pumps, reference should be made to either the CXS or EH manuals
M528-00-880 and A301-51-880 respectively. These manuals contain safety information and must be read, together
with this one, before installing, commissioning, operating or maintaining the pump system. Important safety
information is highlighted as WARNING and CAUTION instructions; you must obey these instructions. The use of
WARNINGS and CAUTIONS is defined below.
In the case where there are contradictions between manuals, instructions and warnings in this manual take
precedence.

1.2 Applications
CXS/EH Pump combination systems are suitable for a wide range of industrial applications. Edwards has a dedicated
team of applications engineers who can help you determine the best CXS/EH Pump combination system for your
application.
If you use the system on an application for which it is not suitable, you may invalidate your warranties. If in doubt,
contact Edwards.
1.2.1 Normal operation
Normal operation is defined by this instruction manual. The CXS/EH Pump combination system is safe to handle IIB3
gases internally and for use in external gas group IIB. Refer to the system rating label mounted on the system
framework or the system documentation for the specific rating applicable to the system.
1.2.2 Abnormal operation
Use of the CXS/EH Pump combination system as a positive pressure compressor.
Use of the CXS/EH Pump combination system in excess of the operational limits specified in Section 1.6.
Reverse rotation of the CXS/EH Pump combination system.
Pumping hydrocarbon oxides.
Pumping gases that tend to self-decompose, or that are chemically unstable.
Use of the CXS/EH Pump combination system with materials which have auto-ignition temperatures below
the defined temperature rating.
Operation such that process deposits can build up inside the pump combination system. This could lead to
loss of constructional safety and an ignition hazard.
Operation such that the pump combination system inlet temperature falls below the dew point of a
flammable vapour being pumped. This could lead to condensate that can collect and lead to the risk of
corrosion or an ignition hazard.
Pumping of, or use of the CXS/EH Pump combination system in the presence of, explosive dust atmospheres.
Warning - Use protective equipment. RF Earth (ground).
Warning - Pressurised.

Use of the CXS in a system or flammable process that causes the ingress of metallic particles into the pump
combination system.
Use of the CXS/EH Pump combination system in ambient conditions other than those specified in Section 2.1.
Pumping pyrophoric gases.
Use with oxygen enriched atmospheres.
Use of the CXS/EH Pump combination system with any of the flameproof entries or flamepaths open to the
atmosphere.
1.3 Description
The CXS/EH Pumping combination system has been developed to combine the CXS pumping system with the EH
Mechanical booster pump to provide a complete pumping system package capable of high pumping speeds.
The CXS/EH pumping combination system integrates the EH mechanical booster with the CXS to enable a single set
of customer services connections and control interfaces. All electrical controls and safety functions are via the CXS
pumping system and general operational control can be via the display module or other remote interfaces such as
MCM MicroTIM.

1.4 Flammable atmospheres
There are two flammable zones (atmospheres) associated with Edwards dry pump systems. The definitions of these
two zones are as follows:
This manual covers the range of temperature (T) classifications that can be applied to pumping systems.
1.5 ATEX certification
The CXS/EH Pumping combination system can be configured to achieve a number of different levels of certification
from internal Category 3 to internal Category 1 and external Category 3 to external Category 2. The CXS/EH Pumping
combination system can also be configured for certification with T3, T160 or T4 temperature classes. The CXS/EH
Pumping combination system is suitable for pumping IIB3 atmospheres internally and installation in IIB atmospheres
externally.
The ATEX rating of your CXS/EH Pumping combination system will be determined by the lowest rated component in
the system. Refer to the system rating label mounted on the support framework for the specific rating applicable to
your system.
An example of this identification is shown below:
External The atmosphere around the outside of the Edwards system and everywhere within the
equipment where it is possible for this atmosphere to be present.
Internal The atmosphere inside the Edwards pumping system where process can be present.
WARNING
An X suffix to the ATEX equipment category shown on your system rating label indicates that
special conditions for "safe use" apply to your system. These conditions are defined in this
Instruction Manual. You must ensure that the appropriate actions are undertaken to comply with
the operating conditions so defined.
WARNING
Consult The CXS and EH Pump manuals for details of the ATEX certification for the CXS pump and
EH mechanical booster pump. The manuals contain important details relevant to the ATEX
certification of these pumps.

The CXS/EH Pumping combination system is required to have certain levels of mandatory instrumentation according
to the requirements of the ATEX Category. All mandatory safety instrumentation is managed by the CXS controller.
Details of the mandatory instrumentation and operational limits for both CXS pumps and EH mechanical booster
pumps are given in The CXS Manual, M52800880.
Refer to the The CXS Manual, M52800880 for further details of the CXS Controller and on-board Zener barriers.
