CSB400 Series Balance Port and Stem/
Stem Guide Change-Out Procedure
!
WARNING
Failure to follow these instructions or
to properly install and maintain this
equipment could result in an explosion
and/or re causing property damage and
personal injury or death.
Fisher®regulators must be installed,
operated, and maintained in accordance
with federal, state, and local codes, rules
and regulations, and Emerson Process
Management Regulator Technologies, Inc.
(Emerson™) instructions.
If the regulator vents gas or a leak
develops in the system, service to the unit
may be required. Failure to correct trouble
could result in a hazardous condition.
Call a gas service person to service the
unit. Only a qualied person must install or
service the regulator.
Introduction
Scope of the Manual
This Installation Sheet provides change-out procedure
for CSB400 Series Balance Port and Stem/Stem
Guide. Complete instructions for installation,
maintenance and parts ordering information for the
CSB400 Series regulators are found in a separate
Instruction Manual (D103123X012).
Change-out Procedure
!
WARNING
To avoid personal injury or equipment
damage, do not attempt any maintenance
or disassembly without rst isolating
the regulator from system pressure
and relieving all internal pressure as
described in “Shutdown” section.
Regulators that have been disassembled
for repair must be tested for proper
operation before being returned to
service. Only parts manufactured by
Regulator Technologies should be used
for repairing Fisher regulators. Restart
gas utilization equipment according to
normal startup procedures.

Step 1 (No picture). If the regulator is installed in service perform the following shutdown procedure.
Shutdown
Installation arrangements may vary, but in any installation it is important that the valves be opened or closed
slowly and that the outlet pressure be vented before venting inlet pressure to prevent damage caused by reverse
pressurization of the regulator. The following steps apply to the typical installation as indicated.
1. Open valves downstream of the regulator.
2. Slowly close the upstream shut-off valve.
3. Inlet pressure should automatically be released downstream as the regulator opens in response to the
lowered pressure underside of the diaphragm.
4. Close outlet shut-off valve.
5. Carefully vent any remaining internal downstream pressure.
Step 2. Remove the two 1/2-inch / 13 mm bolts which hold
the lower casing to the body.
remove bolts lift upwards
Step 3. Separate the lower casing from the body.
Step 4. Remove the old balanced port assembly from the body; make sure to rotate the assembly toward the outlet
of the body as it is being removed to clear the pitot tube from the body. Take caution not to nick the orice during
this process.

Step 5. Remove new balance port assembly from repair kit. Verify the new balance port assembly has a green stripped
spring. If it does not have a green stripped spring, it is an old balance port assembly and should not be used. O-rings
will come well-lubed with Dow Corning®33 and installed on the balance port assembly. If lubrication has been lost
during handling, re-apply Dow Corning®33 or comparable extreme low temperature lubricant.
Step 6. Install the new balance port assembly into the body with the pitot tube pointing into the downstream side of
the regulator body. Press rmly to ensure a secure t, but take care not to pinch the housing O-ring.

Step 7. Remove the old stem and stem guide from actuator by gripping the actuator stem with a pair of pliers and
gently pulling the stem guide until the O-ring seal breaks free. The use of pliers to remove the stem will permanently
damage the stem. Discard the old stem and stem guide immediately; these are never to be reused. Ensure that the
placement of the new stem cap is correct; refer to the picture above.
Step 8. Replace the stem and stem guide with the new set that came pre-lubricated in your kit making sure the
guide ribs on the stem guide are positioned into the grooves of the lower casing correctly. Apply Dow Corning®33
or comparable extreme low temperature lubricant to the tip of the stem. The O-ring on the stem guide should not
be lubricated.

Step 9. Place the actuator back on the body, place the provided stainless steel tag (See Figure 1) over one of the two
1/2-inch / 13 mm bolts which hold the lower casing to the body and tighten in an alternating manner with 10 to
13 ft-lbs / 13.6 to 17.6 N•m of torque.
Step 10 (No picture). With the downstream system depressurized, use the following procedure to start up
the regulator.
Startup
CAUTION
Pressure gauges must always be
used to monitor downstream pressure
during Startup.
1. Check to see that all appliances are turned off.
2. Slowly open the upstream shut-off valve.
3. Check inlet and outlet pressure for correct values.
4. Check all connections for leaks.
5. Turn on utilization equipment and recheck the pressures.
