This description contains specific information on the mode of operation, mounting, installation and
commissioning the Festo CTEL master module.
A list of other descriptions on the components of the CPX or CTEL system as well as an

1 Safety and requirements for product use
1.1 Safety
1.1.1 General safety information
 Observe the general safety information in the corresponding chapters.
Specific safety regulations can be found immediately before the task instructions.
Note
Damage to the product from incorrect handling.
 Switch off the supply voltage before mounting and installation work. Switch on
supply voltage only when mounting and installation work are completely finished.
 Never unplug or plug in a product when powered!
 Observe the handling specifications for electrostatically sensitive devices.
1.1.2 Intended use
The CTEL master module described in this description has been designed exclusively for use in combin
ation with CPX terminals from Festo.
The CTEL master module provides 4 I-port interfaces to the outside, each of which can be connected to
a device with I-port interface (è2.2). The individual I-port devices are documented in specific descrip
tions. The safety instructions listed there must always be observed and the device must only be used as
intended.
The CPX terminal and the connected CTEL master module may be used only as follows:
– As intended in an industrial environment
– In its original state without unauthorised modifications;
only the conversions or modifications described in the documentation supplied with the product are
permitted.
– In perfect technical condition
If used together with additional commercially available components, such as sensors and actuators,
the specified limits for pressures, temperatures, electrical data, torques etc. must be observed.
Observe the regulations of the trade associations, German Technical Control Board (TÜV), VDE stipula
tions or corresponding national laws and regulations.

1.2 Requirements for product use
1.2.1 Technical prerequisites
General notes for the correct and safe use of the product, which must be observed at all times:
 Comply with the connection and environmental conditions specified in the technical data of the
product (èA.1) and of all connected components.
Only compliance with the limit values or load limits permits operation of the product in accordance
with the relevant safety regulations.
 Observe the notes and warnings in this documentation.
1.2.2 Qualification of the specialists (requirements for the personnel)
This description is intended exclusively for technicians trained in control and automation technology,
who have experience in installation, commissioning, programming and diagnostics of programmable
logic controllers (PLC) and fieldbus systems.
1.2.3 Range of applications and certifications
Standards and test values, which the product must comply with and fulfil, can be found in the section
“Technical data” (èA.1). The product-relevant EC directives can be found in the declaration of con
formity.
Certificates and the declaration of conformity for this product can be found on the Festo

2.1 Overview CTEL system
Festo can assist you in solving your automation task at the machine level with the aid of valve terminals
and I/O modules.
The CTEL master module from Festo permits connection of devices with an I-port interface (I-port
devices) to a CPX system.
Up to 4 devices per CTEL master module can be integrated into the CPX system.

A CTEL system consists of the CTEL master module and the devices that are connected to the master
module over specified I-port connecting cables. In this way, it is possible to decentralise the arrange
ment of the devices. The compact valve terminals and I/O modules with I-port can thus be mounted
very close to the cylinders to be controlled. This means that the length of the air supply lines can be
reduced.
Short compressed air lines minimise the friction losses and the times for pressurising and exhausting
the tubes.
This enables smaller valves with sufficient flow to be used, thereby helping to reduce costs.

2.1.1 Mode of operation of the CTEL system
CTEL systems are composed of the following modules:
Modules Functions
CTEL master – Are components of a CPX system and serve as gateway
between CPX and I-port modules.
– Provide connections for up to 4 valve terminals or I/O modules
per master module.
– Transmit control signals to the connected modules and monitor
their ability to function.
I-port valve terminals – Make available various valve functions for controlling
pneumatic actuators.
– Relay plates, pressure zone separation plates and blanking
plates can also be integrated.
I-port input modules – Make available inputs for connecting sensors and enable
interrogation of cylinder positions, for example.

Each CTEL master module controls the data transfer to the decentralised I-port I/O-modules in a CPX
terminal.
In principle, several CTEL master modules can be placed in a CPX terminal.
The number of CTEL master modules that can be placed in a CPX terminal is limited by the
available address space of the CPX terminal of up to 64 bytes of inputs and 64 bytes of
outputs.

2.2 I-Port
The CTEL master module has 4 I-port interfaces. I-port is an interface for the exchange of serial data for
the connection of decentralised function modules (devices) from Festo at field level. It is based on the
IO-Link technology and is compatible with it in certain areas.
The limitations compared to the IO-Link standard are, among others:
– Permanently set baud rate of 230.4 kbps.
– SIO mode is not supported.
– The maximum length of the process data is limited to 32 bytes of input data and 32 bytes of output
data.
– Only one extract of the master commands is used.
– “Plug&work” principle, configuration over IODD is not supported.
The connection type corresponds to a star topology. That means, only 1 device can be connected to
each I-port.

Operation in accordance with specifications is guaranteed only if original Festo connect
ing cables are used.
For operation in accordance with specifications, the maximum length of the I-port con
necting cables must always be observed (è3.3).

2.3 Display components
The CTEL master module is equipped with seven LED indicators, with whose help the current status
(operating status) of the CTEL system and the devices connected to it can be determined.

2.3.2 Meaning of the LED displays
LED Behaviour Meaning
PS off Electronics operating voltage (system supply) is not connected
or has fallen below the minimum supply voltage for the
electronics (CTEL master module is not active).
Lights up green Supply voltage for the electronics is connected; supply for all
I-ports OK.
Flashes green (approx. 1 Hz) Undervoltage of the power supply.
PL off Several causes are possible:
– Load supply voltage is not connected (device supply).
– No devices at all are connected.
– Devices are connected that do not use the PL supply
(e.g. input module CTSL-D-16E-…).
– All 4 I-ports are configured to “Port inactive”.
Lights up green Load supply voltage present at all connected devices and is OK.
Flashes green (approx. 1 Hz) At least one device reports undervoltage PL.

– The corresponding port is deactivated, but a connected

All four LEDs flashing red Configuration error. Several causes are possible:
– Invalid configuration (e.g. through exceeding of the
available address space).
– Device was not replaced by another device type, system
restart necessary (only for automatic configuration).

Monitoring of the load supply voltage (PL) takes place in the devices and is passed on to
the CTEL master module.
Since all connected devices use this LED, the display of an error has priority over the dis
play “OK” (LED illuminated green).
The I-port at which the error has occurred can be determined through the FMT/MMI using
the diagnostic messages.

2.4 Addresses
The CTEL master module can make available a total of up to 32 bytes for inputs and 32 bytes for out
puts. The precise amount of the I/O bytes made available depends on the requirements of the connec
ted devices or of the correspondingly selected operating mode.
2.4.1 I/O configuration presettings
The address space that the CTEL master module makes available and assigns accordingly in the CPX
system can be configured according to 13 different presettings (èTab. 2.4). These presettings corres
pond to the selection options that are supported within the configuration files for the respective host
system (è3.6).
There are 4 presettings available in each case for operation as “pure input module”, “pure output mod
ule” and for “mixed operation”.
In addition, there is a configuration for operation without connected devices.

The I/O lengths listed here are the sum of the bytes available for all I-ports together.
Which of these configuration presettings the CTEL master module uses can be determined manually
(through the user) or automatically (through the module itself), dependent on the operating mode.

2.5 Operating modes (selection of the I/O configuration presetting)
Users can determine the I/O configuration presettings used by the CTEL master module themselves
(operating mode “Manual configuration”) or have it determined automatically through the module
(operating mode “Automatic configuration”).
Selection of the operating mode and the setting for the manual configuration takes place via the DIL
switches on the left side of the module, directly below the housing cover. These are only accessible if
the module is removed from the CPX system.

The operating mode of the CTEL master module (automatic configuration or manual configuration) is
determined with the DIL switches 1.1 and 1.2 (èTab. 2.5).
With the DIL switches 2.1 and 2.2, the I/O length, i.e. the available I/O bytes per I-port, are determined
in the manual configuration (èTab. 2.6). In automatic configuration, the setting of these two switches
is not relevant.

In the manual configuration, the established I/O length always applies for all 4 I-ports
(max. 8 bytes per I-port).
In the case of automatic configuration, the I/O length for each I-port is determined indi
vidually and this value is used to select the appropriate or next highest configuration
preset (è2.4.1 or 4.1.2).

3 Installation
3.1 General installation instructions
Warning
Uncontrolled movements of the connected actuator technology and loose tubing can
cause injury to persons and/or damage to property.
Before carrying out mounting, installation and maintenance work, switch off the follow
ing:
– compressed air supply
– Operating voltage supply for the electronics/sensors
– Load voltage supply for the outputs/valves
Caution
Electrostatically sensitive devices!
 Do not touch any components.
 Observe the handling specifications for electrostatically sensitive devices.
They will help you avoid damage to the electronics.
Note
 Handle all modules and components carefully.
 Comply with the specified torques.
You can obtain information on mounting the CPX terminal in the CPX system description
(èP.BECPXSYS…).

3.2 Mounting and dismantling of the module
The CTEL master module is designed for mounting in a CPX interlinking block (èFig. 3.1).
Warning
Mounting/dismantling of the CTEL master module must always take place in a de-ener
gised state.
 Disconnect the corresponding CPX terminal completely from the related power sup
ply or switch it off.
Note
The CTEL master module does not have a separate connection block, but is designed as
a complete unit.
Before the CTEL master module is mounted, the desired operating mode/configuration
should be set or checked with the help of the DIL switches (è2.5), since they can no
longer be reached after mounting.

Mounting
Mount the module as follows:
1. Check seal and sealing surface.
2. Insert module into the interlinking block. Make sure that the corresponding slots with the contacts
on the bottom of the module lie above the contact rails.
3. Push the module carefully and without tilting into the interlinking block up to the stop.
4. Screws should only be tightened by hand. Screws must be set so that the existing self-cutting
threads can be used.
5. Tighten the screws with a TORX screwdriver, size T10 with 0.9 ... 1.1 Nm.
Dismantling
Dismantle the module as follows:
1. Loosen screws with a TORX screwdriver, size T10.
2. Pull module carefully and without tilting away from the contact rails of the interlinking block.
3.3 I-port connecting cables
Note
Malfunction due to impermissible cabling.
 To connect the I-port devices to the CTEL master module, use only the special I-port
connecting cables from Festo (èA.3).
 The maximum length of the I-port connecting cables used to connect the I-port
devices is limited to 20 m.
You will then avoid errors in data exchange between the CTEL master module and the
connected devices.
For an operation with tool change, there are special specifications that must be observed
in designing the connection lines.
The interface in the connecting cable must be constructed so that, when creating the
connection, the contacts of the device supply voltage (24 V PS and 0 V PS) are energised
first.
Otherwise, a short circuit might be reported temporarily through the voltage present on
the C/Q cable when the connection is created.
