This manual describes the function, operation and maintenance of the Hei-FLOW Value,
Hei-FLOW Advantage and Hei-FLOW Precision peristaltic pumps.

nized safety regulations. However, risks may still arise during installation, operation and

Any use which deviates from the device‘s intended use is considered to be improper. The
manufacturer does not accept liability for any damages resulting from non-permitted
uses. The risk is carried by the operator alone.
Installation / Electrical safety
▪The device may only be connected when the mains voltage corresponds to the infor-
mation on the rating plate of the unit.
▪The mains connection must be accessible at all times.
▪Repairs on live parts may only be performed by a qualied electrician.
▪Never operate the unit with a damaged power cord.
▪Always turn the unit OFF and disconnect mains power before performing any
maintenance or service.
Personnel qualication
▪The device may only be operated by qualied persons.
▪The device may only be operated by individuals who have been instructed in its
proper use by qualied persons.
▪The device may only be operated and maintained by persons who are of legal age.
▪Other personnel may only work with the unit under continuous supervision of an
experienced qualied operator.
▪This manual must be read and understood by all persons working with the device.
▪The personnel must receive special safety instructions in order to guarantee respon-
sible and safe work procedures.
Operating company’s obligations
Installation site
▪The device must be positioned in a suitable location.
▪The device must be installed sufciently stable on a temperature resistant surface.
▪All screw connections must be securely tightened.
▪Do not install the device in the vicinity of highly inammable or explosive substances.
▪Installation and operation of the device is only permitted in facilities which are tted
with the appropriate laboratory equipment (e.g. with air extraction units).
▪We recommend operation in fume hood enclosures depending on the agents used.
▪The device may only be operated in enclosed spaces and under the following environ-
mental conditions:

32 - 40 °C decrease linearly
till max. 50 % relative humidity

Changes to the unit
▪No unauthorized changes may be made to the unit.
▪No parts may be used which have not been approved by the manufacturer.
▪Unauthorized changes result in the EC Declaration of Conformity loosing its validity,
and the unit may no longer be operated.
▪The manufacturer is not liable for any damage, danger or injuries that result from
unauthorized changes or from operating the unit other than as described in this
manual.
Safety for the personnel
➜Ensure that only qualied personnel operates the device.
➜Observe the following regulations:
- Laboratory guidelines
- Accident prevention regulation
- Ordinance on Hazardous Substances
- Other generally accepted rules of safety engineering and occupational health
- Local regulations
Safety during use
➜Wear the appropriate protective clothing when working on the device (clothing,
protective glasses and, if necessary, safety gloves).
➜Do not use the device in potentially explosive areas. The device is not protected
against explosion. There is no explosion or ATEX protection available.
➜Do not operate or assemble devices in the vicinity which are emission or radiation
sources (electromagnetic waves) for the frequency range (3*1011 Hz to 3*1015 Hz).
➜Do not operate the device where adiabatic compression or shock waves might occur
(shock wave combustion).
➜Avoid putting pressure on the display when you are not operating the device.
➜Eliminate errors immediately.
➜Do not use abrasive material to clean the glass surface. Only wipe with damp cloths.
➜Always switch the device off after use.

➜Clean all components before disposal.

Warning:

In operation the device might slide off the table top.
The surface must be smooth and clean and should be properly
leveled.
➜Locate the unit on a stable, horizontal surface.
➜Clean surface and feet with a damp cloth and ethanol regularly.

Caution:
Possible damage of device
If device sockets are not covered, uids can get in contact with
Interface connectors. Penetrating uids can lead to malfunctions of
interface connection and could initiate a short circuit.
Sockets at the backside of device must be covered at all times.
Close sockets with attached sealing cap or connect interface cable.

Feed rate depends on media, inner diameter and material of tubing
and speed.

Charge and discharge tubes
With the key „max” charging and discharging of the tubes can be sped up without
changing any settings.

Hei-FLOW Precision:

A power cut will stop the pump. All settings will be saved.
With power return the device is switched on automatically. Rotation
must be started manually.
Change direction of rotation
Direction of rotation can only be changed if rotation is switched off.
A warning signal will be audible when trying to change direction
during operation.

Additional functions Hei-FLOW Precision
On top of the standard functions you can set parameters that allow consistent process
quality.
Following parameters can be set:
▪„Speed rpm”
sets speed of pumping;
ow per minute “Flow ml/min” will be adjusted automatically
▪„Tube mm” (inner diameter)
allows minimum and maximum ow per minute
must be set correctly for any other parameter to be adjusted correctly
▪„Flow ml/min”
sets the ow per minute;
speed “Speed rpm” will be adjusted automatically
▪„Vol ml”
sets the volume to be pumped in total;
pump will be stopped automatically when volume is reached
▪„Pause sec/min/h”
intermittent dosing allows a permanent repetition of dispensing a dened volume
Correct operation of all functions requires the correct setting of pump
head and inner tube diameter in use.
When purchasing a package with pump head, the pump head is set
correctly by the factory.

By setting the ow you dene how many ml per minute should be dispensed.
Depending on the tube size different ranges of ow.
(Please refer to chapter “Technical data, Table tubes”
When using „Cassette small” with small tubes and inner Ø
from 0,2 mm - 0,9 mm volume will be displayed as μl instead of ml.
✓Unit is switched on.
✓Pump head and inner diameter of tube is set correctly.
➜Press „Select” key repeatedly, till
indicator light „Flow ml/min” illuminates.
✓Display shows actual setting of ow ml

Set volume
By setting the volume you dene how many milliliters in total should be dispensed.
Depending on the tube size used the volume can be set from 0,1 to 9,999 ml.
When using „Cassette small” and tubes with an inner Ø between
0,2 mm and 0,9 mm the volume will be displayed as μl instead off ml.
Model Hei-FLOW Precision 06 is limited to a maximum speed of
300 rpm.
✓Unit is switched on.
✓Pump head and inner diameter of tube is set correctly.

volume is reached.
Speed and tube diameter result in a minimal volume. Lower volume
can only be performed by using smaller tubes.
Large tubes and to little ow will result in an error feedback (see
chapter “Troubleshooting, Possible errors and how to resolve”).
Calibrate pump
Tubes have individual manufacturing tolerances. If high dosing accuracy is required the
pump has to be calibrated for the tube in use by ow and/or by volume.
✓Unit is switched on.
✓Media to be dispensed is connected to pump.
✓Pump head and inner diameter of tube are set correctly.
Calibrate pump with ow
✓Indicator light „Flow ml/min” is illuminated.
✓Required ow ml per minute is set.
➜Press „Cal” key.
✓Display starts blinking.
➜Press rotation key.
✓The pump dispenses for exactly 1 minute.
➜Measure dispensed volume.
➜Set measured ow via arrow keys or .
➜Press „Cal” key for a minimum of 3 seconds to conrm.
✓Pump is calibrated for ow ml per minute.
Verify set ow after calibrating. If applicable adjust ow.

Set back stroke
To avoid dripping when dosing a short backstroke can be programmed.
➜Switch unit off at main switch.
➜Press „Cal” key and hold pressed.
➜Switch unit on at main switch.
✓Display shows actual setting of pump
head.

➜Press „Select” key repeatedly till Display
shows „r on” or „r off” .
✓„r on” switches back stroke on,

Interfaces
Caution:
Possible damage of device
If device sockets are not covered, uids can get in contact with
Interface connectors. Penetrating uids can lead to malfunctions of
interface connection and could initiate a short circuit.
Sockets at the backside of device must be covered at all times.
Use plug connectors protection class IP 67 only. Ensure professional
connection.
Calibrate pump with volume
✓Indicator light „Vol ml” is illuminated.
✓Required volume is set.
✓Speed is set via setting ow ml/min.
➜Press rotation key.
➜Measure dispensed volume.
➜Press „Cal” key.
➜Set measured volume via arrow keys or .
➜Press „Cal” key for a minimum of 3 seconds to conrm.
✓Pump is calibrated for volume.
If the calibrated values show a deviation > 30% most probably pump
head or tube diameter are not set correctly. Or the tube mounting
needs to be adjusted.
In this case cancel calibration via „Select” key. Verify your settings.
Set intermittent dosing
Pauses can be set from 0.1 seconds to 750 hours.

✓The display shows alternating dispensed volume or running break time. The corre-
sponding indicator light blinks.
✓As soon as break time is over the pump starts moving.
✓As soon as set volume is dispensed the pump will stop.

To operate pump externally an analog
interface is located at the backside of
device.
Via this interface the speed can be set.
The socket is protected against splash
water with a screw cap.

▪TTL-level 0 V = clockwise rotation, TTL-level 5 V = counter-clockwise rotation
▪TTL signal 5 V switches pump on and off.
This function is available all the time (also in internal mode).
▪For triggering direction of rotation and ON/OFF function, a 5 volts pin is available in
the interface connector which allows potential-free switching.
▪The analog interface is recognized at a level of 0.2 volts or a 4 mAmps current.
▪Hei-FLOW Precision: This mode is conrmed by “EA” in the display. As long as the
pump drive is controlled via analog interface, the display is inactive and “Start/Stop”
key will be the only active key on the device.

Cleaning and Maintenance
Cleaning
All surfaces of the unit allow for cleaning with a damp cloth and if required a mild soap
lotion.
Attention:
Damage to the surfaces
All surfaces can be damaged by improper cleaning.
Never use:
▪Chlorine bleach or any cleaning agent including chlorine
▪Ammonia
▪Abrasive cleaning agents such as cleaning rags, scrubbing agents
or any other agents which include metal components
To ensure a stable position clean surface and feet with a damp cloth
and ethanol regularly.
Maintenance
The unit is maintenance-free. Any necessary repair must be performed by an authorized
Heidolph distributor.
Please contact Heidolph Instruments or your local Heidolph Instruments distributor.
Tubes
Tubes are wear parts. Service life of tubes depends on material, rotational speed and
properties of the substance to be fed, e.g. temperature, viscosity, chemical composition,
and pressure.
Service life of tubes used in pumps varies between approx. 50 and 500 hours in use.
➜Check tubes regularly.
➜Replace tubes in the event of visible wear.
Multi-channel pump head
➜Check plastic sleeve over metal bar regularly.
➜Replace plastic sleeve in the event of visible wear or latest after approx. 500 hours in

Electrical connections
▪Repairs of any kind are allowed by qualied professional electricians only.
Any improper repair can result in a dangerous situation. Contact your local Heidolph
Instruments distributor for any repair you may have.
Warning:
Electric shock!
This unit must only be connected to a grounded electrical socket.
The unit and voltage must match. The type label on the back side of
the unit provides all voltage specics.
When shipped the unit is grounded. In case the original plug is
changed, the new plug must have a protective conductor!

While mounting and demounting tubes you can crush your ngers, if
rotation starts accidentally.
Always switch device OFF at main switch before mounting tubes.
Only use tubes with appropriate wall thickness. Using an inadequate
tube can damage tube or pump might not operate.
To extend life-cycle of tubes pre-tension tube after mounting. Pull
slightly and simultaneously at both ends of tube.
Pre-tension guarantee the rollers running centered over tube.
You will nd corresponding tube sizes to variants of pump heads in chapter „Technical
data, Table tubes” as well as in our general catalogue.

Caution:
Possible tube damage
Do not force closing of tube bed. Overtightening leads to damaged
tube.
Open clamping screws completely before closing tube bed. Adjust
clamping gradually.
Check correct mounting by repeated test runs if necessary.
Mount tubes: Multi-channel pump heads
Multi-channel pump heads require cassettes to mount tubes. You will nd the right sizes
of cassettes in our general catalogue or at the end of this manual.
Warning:
Risk of crushing!
While mounting and demounting cassettes you can crush your
ngers, if rotation starts accidentally.
Always switch device OFF at main switch before mounting cassettes.
Caution:
Possible damage of device
Multi-channel pump heads require a certain combination of cassettes
and tubes. Other combinations lead to premature wear or to
malfunctions.
Only use combinations of cassettes and tubes tting your Multi-
channel pump head as laid out in this manual (see chapter
„Technical data, Table tubes”).
All cassettes operate in both directions. However, we recommend to
mount cassettes alternating. This way the clamping can be adjusted
more easily.
Cassettes and tubes: „Cassette small”
„Cassette small” is suitable for multi-channel pump heads C 4 and
C 12 only!
Caution:
Possible damage of device
Stopper on tubes with small inner diameter of 0.8 and 1-7 prevent
tubes from moving. Operating tubes without stoppers will lead to
malfunction and exclusion from warranty!
Always use stopper tubes when operating these small tubes.
„Cassette small” is suitable for two-stopper tubes only!

Adjust tube pressure

If tube pressure was already adjusted for tube size in previous
operations, adjustment of pressure does not have to be repeated.
Optimize tube pressure
Certain applications require adjustment of tube pressure, for instance to:
▪vary ow for certain tube size
▪reduce variation in ow caused by system pressure
▪extend life time of tubes
➜Switch rotation on.
➜Turn adjustment knob counterclockwise to move wedges outwards to higher scale.
✓Tube pressure is reduced to insufcient.
➜Slowly adjust by turning knob clockwise till ow and pressure t your requirements.
Secure cassettes
Multi-channel pump heads can be operated with reduced number of cassettes. Reduced
number of cassettes have to be secured to prevent moving.
Both support rods are equipped with an
O-ring to prevent cassettes from moving.
➜Push O-rings on both sides away from
pump head.
➜Mount required number of cassettes.
➜Push 0-Ringe on both sides against
