Introduction to Z-Wave
Transitioning from X10 to Z-Wave
The X-10 and Z-Wave networks are technically different:
X-10: -Uses a House Code (A-P) and Unit Number (1-16)
-Can have a total of 256 modules
-Uses Power Line Carrier (PLC) Technology
-Limited to the phase the X-10 transmitter is on
Z-Wave:
-Uses a Network ID and a “Node”ID (Similar to an IP Address)
-Uses RF technology to transmit between Nodes (Phases do not matter)
-Uses a Mesh Network configuration
-Has a transmission limit of 75’
-Each node can act as repeaters, for extending the distance
-Must have a “Primary Controller” to learn in the modules
-Can have a maximum of 232 devices
Z-Wave Terminology
Primary Controller:
This is a device that contains a description of the Z-Wave network and controls the
outputs
Include:
Refers to enrolling the device into the network
Exclude:
Refers to removing the device from the network
Node:
This refers to the Z-Wave module itself (lights, thermostats, outlets, etc.)
Network Id:
Also known as the Home ID, refers to the ID that the Primary Controller assigns the
node (Similar to the House Code on an X-10 Module)

Z-Wave Overview and Functionality
Z-Wave communicates using wireless technology designed specifically for remote control applications. Z-Wave
operates in the sub-gigahertz frequency range, around 900 MHz. This band competes with some cordless telephones
and other consumer electronics devices, but avoids interference with Wi-Fi and other systems.
Z-Wave is a mesh networking technology where each node or device on the network is capable of sending and
receiving control commands through walls or floors and use intermediate nodes to route around household obstacles
or radio dead spots that might occur in the home.
Z-Wave uses a source-routed mesh network topology and has one or more master (primary) controllers that control
routing and security. Devices can communicate to another by using intermediate nodes to actively route around and
circumvent household obstacles or radio dead spots that might occur.
Example:
A message from node A to node C can be successfully delivered even if the two nodes are not within range,
providing that a third node B can communicate with nodes A and C.
If the preferred route is unavailable, the message originator will attempt other routes until a path is found to
the "C" node.
This allows a Z-Wave network to span much farther than the radio range of a single unit; however, with the use of
several hops a delay could occur between the control command and the desired result. (Z-Wave, 2011)

Enrolling Z-Wave Devices
Programming the Honeywell ZWSTAT
1. Press System:
-Press the 3rd and 5th
buttons simultaneously

Press the “Add Device Icon”
-On the Thermostat, change the 0 to a 1 to learn Network information from the Tuxedo Touch.
Change this
value to a 1.
Once that is done
you will see
-Press ‘Done’ to exit programming.
Notes:
-Locations 0615 (Heat Set Back) and 0616 (Cool Set Back) are End User Programmable. (See the
thermostat Owner’s Manual for more information)

Enrolling Door Locks
The products listed are Yale, Kwikset, and Schlage. For detailed information, you must call the manufacturer.
Yale Touch Screen Keypad
Activate the screen by touching the keypad with the back of your hand. The default Master PIN is “12346578”.
Kwikset Locks
Remove the back cover and press the “A” button 1 time.

Enrolling Lighting Modules
-Make sure the Switch/Module Indicator LED is illuminated
-Press, and Release, the Switch/Module Button to Enroll
-The indicator LED will flash Amber during the enrollment process
-The On/Off button to enroll is marked with a Red Circle

Additional Tuxedo Touches
In order for the additional Tuxedo Touches to display the same devices we have to program them as a Secondary
Controller. You CAN NOT enroll each device into an additional Tuxedo Touch™
-
When you perform the steps below in the proper sequence, the secondary controller will request a list of devices
from the primary controller and then the secondary controller will upload the device list.
To Shift from Primary Controller to Secondary Controller, press the Z-Wave Primary-to-Secondary Button.

Excluding (Deleting) Z-Wave Devices

Excluding an Existing Device
-Upon pressing the (Exclusion Icon) the screen will display the following message: “Start remove
device. Please press function key on device.”
-The next step is to press the program button or code on the device to remove. Refer to trouble shooting
for “Action Failed” message is displayed.
-This means the device did not receive the default command to remove it from the Tuxedo’s network
-This is also useful for removing a device that was enrolled on a previous network. See troubleshooting
for more information.
Example: To remove a ZWSTAT from the network, perform the following steps:
-Press the “Exclude”(enrollment) button on the “Node” (see node instructions)
-Example: Using the Honeywell Zstat you would press the Up Arrow at the rF10 prompt in
programming:

Aborting an Operation
If you accidentally press the Add icon or Delete icon the Z-Wave devices will not be functional unless you abort, or
stop, the process. To do this simply press the “Abort Operation Icon”
Deleting a Bad Device
If a device goes bad and you have no way to remove it, then you can simply delete it out. By pressing the “Delete
Device” icon you simply remove it from the device list.
Note:
IF YOU DELETE A USABLE DEVICE, INSTEAD OF EXCLUDING IT, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO
ENROLL IT UNDER ANOTHER NETWORK.
YOU CAN FIX THIS PROBLEM BY SENDING AN EXCLUDE COMMAND TO THE DEVICE, UPON DOING
SO YOU WILL DEFAULT THE UNIT BACK TO FACTORY SETTINGS
Troubleshooting
Z-Wave Device Will Not Learn In
New Devices
Was this a new Z-Wave device?
-If yes follow the enrollment process on your Z-Wave device.
-If no, then you must exclude the device first, see question #2.
Existing Devices
Was this an existing Z-Wave device that was enrolled into a previous Z-Wave network?
-If no, verify that you are properly “Including” the device, follow steps established by the
manufacturer of the Z-Wave node.
-If the answer is yes,you have to “Exclude” the device from the old Z-Wave network.
Defaulting a Z-Wave device
Each device has a factory default setting. The Tuxedo Touch™ can send it a default command to restore those
factory default settings in the device.
To default the device, follow these steps to delete a device.
–Press the Z-Wave delete button
•The top of the TUX keypad will display “Start Remove Device. Please press function
key on device.”
–Press the function (program) key on the device.
•If successful keypad will display “Device Found then Removing Device then Device
Removed”

Range Issues
You could also have a range issue. There are a few ways that you can fix this problem. As explained in the Z-Wave
Introduction, you are creating a mesh network with your devices. Each device works as a transceiver (most devices,
consult the owners guide to verify). The fixes are:
1. Bring the module closer to the Tuxedo Touch™
2. If this is a hardwired device, you can learn a plug in module into the network and plug it in between the
Tuxedo Touch™ and the hardwired device.
a. The Tuxedo Touch™ will send out the request
b. The plug in module will know that it is not trying to learn in, so it will pass the request along.
My Secondary Controller will not upload the information from the
Primary Controller.
After adding the new Z-Wave device to the primary controller (keypad) you must manually update the secondary
controller. To do so you simply follow the steps above to re-include it. This will force it to pull an upload from the
primary.
