The Following Recommendations for the Location of Fire and Burglary Detection Devices
Help Provide Proper Coverage for the Protected Premises.
Recommendations For Smoke And Heat Detectors
With regard to the number and placement of smoke/heat detectors, we subscribe to the recommendations
contained in the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Standard #72 noted below.
Early warning fire detection is best achieved by the installation of fire detection equipment in all rooms
and areas of the household as follows: For minimum protection a smoke detector should be installed
outside of each separate sleeping area, and on each additional floor of a multi-floor family living unit,
including basements. The installation of smoke detectors in kitchens, attics (finished or unfinished), or in
garages is not normally recommended.
For additional protection the NFPA recommends that you install heat or smoke detectors in the living
room, dining room, bedroom(s), kitchen, hallway(s), attic, furnace room, utility and storage rooms,
basements and attached garages.
In addition, we recommend the following:
• Install a smoke detector inside every bedroom where a smoker sleeps.
• Install a smoke detector inside every bedroom where someone sleeps with the door partly or
completely closed. Smoke could be blocked by the closed door. Also, an alarm in the hallway outside
may not wake up the sleeper if the door is closed.

Recommendations For Proper Intrusion Protection
For proper intrusion coverage, sensors should be located at every possible point of entry to a home or
commercial premises. This would include any skylights that may be present, and the upper windows in
a multi-level building.
In addition, we recommend that radio backup be used in a security system so that alarm signals can
still be sent to the alarm monitoring station in the event that the telephone lines are out of order (alarm
signals are normally sent over the phone lines, if connected to an alarm monitoring station).

About LYNX LXL-1010
LYNX LXL-1010 is a compact security system featuring total wireless zone protection.
Integral to the LXL-1010 control, requiring no installation action is the sounder and RF
receiver/transmitter, and a digital communicator. LXL-1010 also contains a rechargeable
battery that provides up to 24 hours of standby operation in the event of AC loss. The LXL-
1010 control is mounted to a duplex receptacle and the only external interface is telephone
wiring. Refer to Figure 1 for the LXL-1010 internal overview.

Functions
• Night Stay and step arming can be set on the keypad
• Single-button arming feature (on keypads or keyfobs): Can use dedicated keys to arm the
system AWAY or STAY
• Up to 8 schedules, to control devices and/or auto-arm/disarm the system
• Up to two keypad macros, which can be activated by wireless keypads
• Paging feature allows certain system conditions to be reported to pager phone numbers;
can use a dedicated key on keypads to send a signal to a pager (supports 2 pagers)
• Built-in Telephone Line Monitoring option can monitor the telephone line voltage and
can cause a local display, or a display and trouble/alarm sound.
• Event Logging records up to 50 selected events in a history log; control and readout from
the log is done via Ademco Compass Downloader software or installer/master code at
5839 Alpha RF Keypad
• Zone descriptors for all zones
• Optional RF jam detection for wireless systems detects a condition that may impede
proper RF reception (i.e., jamming or other RF interference); causes keypad display, and
sends a report to the central monitoring station (if trouble reporting is enabled).
Compatible Devices
• Supports up to seven 5839 Alpha RF Keypads and unlimited 5828 Fixed RF Keypads or
5828V Fixed RF Voice Keypads (Function keys will not work as set in *57)
• Supports 5800 series transmitters

• For programming the control during installation, supports either a 6160 or 6139 Alpha
keypad (Installer Keypad).
System Features
Tamper Protection
The control is tampered protected. An alarm will sound if the cover is removed or if the
control is removed from it’s mounted location.
LED Indications
• One Rf activity indicator, activates momentarily when Rf is received (used during
installation to program sensors serial number to the control)
• The control utilizes three Security System Control Status LEDs that indicate control
arming state and power status as follows:
• The Red LED: Lights or flashes when system is armed AWAY or STAY mode.
• Lit Steady = system armed AWAY or
system armed STAY and exit delay has expired
• Flashing = system armed STAY and exit delay timer active
• Rapid Flashing = an alarm has occurred (memory of alarm)
• The Yellow LED: Indicates system power status.
• Lit Steady = AC power on
• Flashing = low battery
• Off = AC power off, discharged battery
• Green LED lights when the system is disarmed and ready to be armed (no open
zones). If the system is disarmed and the green light is off, it indicates the system is
not ready (one or more zones are open).

Important Installation Highlights (Installer Please Read)
• The Installer keypad (6160 or 6139) for programming uses address 16. Before beginning
the installation refer to “Section 2, Setup and Mountingand Quick Mode
Programming Installer Keypad Functions”” to become familiar with the use of the
Installer Keypads keys used to program the control.
• The system can use up to seven 5839 keypads, the first keypad uses address 01 and the
subsequent keypad(s) (if used) uses address 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 respectively. The 5828
series keypads use the house ID.
• Relays have two programming menu modes: Use *79 Menu mode to map device (output)
numbers. Use *80 Menu mode to define the output functions (see Output Device
Programming section).
• This system supports programmable function keys. Use *57 Menu mode to define the
function keys (see Function Key Programming section).
• This system provides various paging features. Refer to “Section 3, Programming
Overview” section for a summary on pager programming.
• For UL installations only, LXL-1010 and TELCO line must be located within the same
room.

General
The Quick Start Installation Guide provides you with the necessary installation procedures
to get the LXL-1010 mounted and operational. The sections that follow provide detailed
information designed to further enhance or modify the LXL-1010 standard defaulted
operational functions.
1. Removing the Cover
During normal operation, the cover of the LXL-1010 control remains in place.
Press inward on the two locking tabs shown in Figure 1 and remove the cover.

Referring to Figure 2, install the battery and battery bracket as shown and then connect the
battery connector to the pc board. Observe installing the battery with the polarization
orientation as shown in Figure 2.

2. Selecting a Installation Site
Plug the LXL-1010 control in at the desired location.
Select a duplex outlet location where the controls Red RF LED is not lit. The RED RF LED
located on the receiver's circuit board should be used as an indicator of strong local radio
frequency interference. If this LED is continuously illuminated, the control should be
relocated.
Optimum RF performance can usually be found at the highest point within a building, with the
fewest number of walls between the control and the outside of the premises.
Avoid mounting the LXL-1010 near other electronic devices. Table 1 provides minimum
distances. Highest RF energy is in the direct, horizontal line of the antenna. Therefore, vertical
separation (moving electronic devices either higher or lower on the wall) provides a higher level
of isolation from the control.

The LXL-1010 is intended for indoor installation only. Mounting outdoors will cause system failure
and may present a shock hazard.
3. Connecting the Installer Keypad
Connect the Installer Keypad to the Programming Connector as shown in Figure 3 and then
set the Installer Keypad address to 16.

4. Program the LXL-1010
The LXL-1010 should be programmed and tested prior to Final Mounting. Refer to Quick
Mode Programming procedures that follow to “Select System Defaults,”“Add Primary Phone
Number,”“Add Primary Sub ID Account Number,”“Add Secondary Phone Number,”“Add
Secondary Sub ID Account Number,”“Add Sensors,”“Delete Sensors,”and enter “Expert
Programming Mode.”to finalize system features.

Note: “Del Transmitter’option functions the same as “Delete Zone”, except that all loops
associated with that transmitter will be deleted including all zones using that transmitters
serial number.
EXPERT MODE
To complete the programming requirements for your installation Scroll to the “Expert
Programming Mode”option to exit the Quick Programming Mode and enable Standard Data
Field Programming to enter *24 RF House Id code, *190 Site Id 5839 Keypad Options, and
*191 Site Id 5839 Enrollment mode. In addition use this option to change a specific default
for example, *34 Exit Delay, *35 Entry Delay, *47 Phone System Select, *48 Report Format,
and *50 Burglary Dialer Delay.
Once Expert Mode is selected from QUICK MODE programming you will be locked out of
Quick Mode programming. You should choose this entry only if you desire to restrict re-
entry into Data Field Programming via *98 exit.

5. Completing Programming
When you have finished programming all zones, test each zone using the system’s TEST
mode. Do not use the Transmitter ID Sniffer Mode for checking wireless transmitting
devices, as it will only check for transmission of one zone on a particular transmitter, NOT
the zones assigned to each additional loop.
6. Final Mounting
When a good programming and testing is complete, unplug LXL-1010 and remove the
existing duplex or Decora receptacle cover plate. Do not discard screw(s) they will be used in
the next step.
Using the appropriate receptacle adapter supplied, standard duplex or Decora, attach the
adapter to the wall receptacle using the screws removed in step 1. A typical installation is
shown in Figure 5.

Using the screws and anchors supplied attach the controls mounting plate to the receptacle
adapter and the wall as shown in Figure 5.
Figure 5 shows a typical mounting installation using the duplex receptacle adapter.

Programming Overview

About Programming
You can program the system at any time, even at the installer's premises prior to the actual
installation. Programming can also be performed remotely from the installer’s office/home,
using an IBM personal computer, a modem, and Compass downloading software.
The following is a list of the various Programming modes used to program this system.
Programming Mode… Used to…
Data Field Programming Program basic data fields used for setting the various
system options. Most of the data fields in this system
have been programmed for specific default values.
However, some fields must be programmed for each
particular installation to establish its specific alarm
and reporting features.
Quick Mode Programming The Quick Mode Programming is a simplified
programming option that can be used to modify
defaulted programming options.
∗56 Zone Programming Assign zone characteristics, report codes, alpha
descriptors, and serial numbers for 5800 RF
transmitters.
∗57 Function Key Programming Programs each 5839 used four alphabet function keys to
perform one of several system operations.
∗58 Zone Programming Assign zone attributes similar to ∗56 mode, but
provides a faster programming procedure and is
intended for those more experienced in programming
controls of this type.
∗79 Output Device Mapping Assign unit codes for Powerline Carrier devices (X-10).
∗80 Output Definitions Define up to 24 output definitions which can control the
output relays mapped using *79 Output Device
Mapping mode.
∗81 Zone List Programming Create Zone Lists for zones that will activate X-10
devices, chime, night-stay, and pagers.
∗82 Alpha Programming Create alpha descriptors for easy zone identification.
Scheduling Mode (code + [#] +64) Create schedules to automate various system functions.

Transmitters
Use *56, *58 Zone Programming Menu modes, or Quick Programming Mode to program zone
information and enroll transmitters (zones 1-32, buttons 33-40).
Wireless Keys
Use Wireless Key Programming Templates section of the *58 Zone Programming Menu mode
or Quick Programming Mode to program zone information and enroll each button of the
wireless keys used. Once a wireless key is enrolled, it must be assigned to a user before it
becomes active. See Adding/Deleting Security Codes section for procedure.
Pager Programming
The system can send various reports to up to two pagers.
To program pager reporting, do the following:
1. Enter the appropriate information in the following data fields:
*160, *163 Pager Phone Numbers (for pagers 1-2 respectively)
*161, *164 Pager Prefix Characters (for pagers 1-2 respectively)
*162, *165 Pager Reporting Options (for pagers 1-2 respectively)
2. Enable Pager Delay, if desired, in field *172 (delays alarm reporting for ALL pagers).
3. Enable appropriate user open/close pager reports using the user attribute command
(master code + [8] + user no. + [#] [5] + [1]). Users that perform actions will, if enabled,
attempt to report to all pagers enabled for open/close reporting
4. If using latchkey pager report, define the latchkey report schedule using Scheduling
mode (master code + [#] [6] [4] then select event type “03”).
5. If using a function key to manually send a message to a pager, see Function Keys on next
page.
6. If reporting zone alarms and troubles to a pager, use *81 Zone List menu mode to assign
the zones associated with each pager (zone lists 9-10).
