This Quickstart introduces the MSM313 (US J9346A/B, WW J9350A/B) Integrated Services Access Point and shows you how to get started using it. After
following the directions in this Quickstart, see the HP MSM313/MSM323 Management and Configuration Guide available at: www.hp.com/networking/support.

Radio and Antennas
The MSM313 has a single radio with two antennas for diversity.
The antenna connectors are reverse-polarity SMA jacks. Antennas or cable connectors must
use RP-SMA plugs. Antennas can be mounted directly on the MSM313. When a single antenna
is used, it is recommended to attach it to the Main antenna connector.
Ports
•Ethernet ports: Two 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports with RJ-45 connectors. Only the LAN
port supports Power over Ethernet (PoE). Ethernet ports are for LAN connections only,
and they have not been evaluated for connection to MAN or WAN applications.
•Serial port: To connect to a computer, use a standard (straight-through) serial cable
with an RJ-11 connector. For details, see Ports in the HP MSM313/MSM323
Management and Configuration Guide. The RJ-11 connector is not a telecommunication
port and cannot be connected to outside plant leads (phone lines).
Reset button
Press and quickly release the button to reset the MSM313. To reset to factory default
settings, press and hold the reset button until the status lights flash three times, then
release. For details, see Resetting to factory defaults in the HP MSM313/MSM323
Management and Configuration Guide.

Status lights
The status lights provide the following information:

WARNING: PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION REQUIRED. For Indoor installation only.
Prior to installing or using this device, consult with a professional installer
trained in RF installation and knowledgeable in local regulations including
building and wiring codes, safety, channel, power, indoor/outdoor
restrictions, and license requirements for the intended country. It is the
responsibility of the end user to ensure that installation and use comply
with local safety and radio regulations.
Surge protection and grounding: If you plan on connecting an outdoor antenna to the unit
make sure that proper lightning surge protection and grounding precautions are taken
according to local electrical code. Failure to do so may result in personal injury, fire,
equipment damage, or a voided warranty. The HP ProCurve hardware warranty provides no
protection against damage caused by static discharge or a lightning strike.
Cabling: You must use the appropriate cables, and where applicable, surge protection, for
your given region. For compliance with EN55022 Class-B emissions requirements use
shielded Ethernet cables.
Plenum installation: The MSM313 can be installed in a plenum (UL2043 rating). It should
be installed in a similar orientation as in a ceiling installation. However, it is left to a qualified
installer to determine how to install/secure the MSM313 in a plenum in an appropriate and
safe manner. Plenum-rated cables and attachment hardware must be used.
Country of use: In some regions, you are prompted to select the country of use during setup.
Once the country has been set, the MSM313 will automatically limit the available wireless
channels, ensuring compliant operation in the selected country. Entering the incorrect
country may result in illegal operation and may cause harmful interference to other systems.

Safety
Take note of the following safety information during installation:
•If your network covers an area served by more than one power distribution system, be
sure all safety grounds are securely interconnected.
•Network cables may occasionally be subject to hazardous transient voltages (caused by
lightning or disturbances in the electrical power grid).
•Handle exposed metal components of the network with caution.
•The MSM313 is powered-on when Ethernet Port 1 is plugged into a PoE power source
or when an external power supply is connected.
•The MSM313 and all interconnected equipment must be installed indoors within the
same building (except for outdoor models / antennas), including all PoE-powered
network connections as described by Environment A of the IEEE 802.3af standard.
Installation
When mounting the MSM313 on a wall or ceiling, ensure that the surface to which you
attach the MSM313 and the fasteners you use can support at least .9 kg (2 pounds). Allow
extra weight for cables. Fasteners must be a minimum #6 x 3/4-inch wood screws.
If the MSM313 is installed inside a plenum, plenum-rated cables and attachment hardware
must be used. Only the MSM313 and appropriate cabling can be located in the plenum. The
power injector or power supply cannot be installed in a plenum.
Note: Before installing, it is recommended that you first verify device operation.
Powering the MSM313
The MSM313 can be powered by:
• A PoE-enabled switch. Various PoE-enabled switches are available from HP ProCurve.
•HP ProCurve PoE 1-Port Power Injector (J9407A)
•HP ProCurve MSM31x Power Supply (J9405A).
Initial configuration
This section walks you through the steps needed to configure the MSM313 and establish a
connection through the MSM313 to the Internet.
The MSM313 is managed via its web-based management tool using at least Microsoft
Internet Explorer 7/8 or Mozilla Firefox 3.x.
Light State Description
Power Off The MSM313 has no power.
Flashing The MSM313 is starting up. If the power light continues to
flash after several minutes, it indicates that the firmware
failed to load. Reset or power cycle the MSM313. If this
condition persists, contact HP ProCurve Customer Care.
On The MSM313 is fully operational.
Ethernet Off Port is not connected or there is no activity.
Flashing Port is transmitting or receiving data.
On Stays on for a short period when the link is established.
Wireless Flashing Wireless port is transmitting or receiving data.

Caution: Wireless Security For initial configuration convenience, a factory-default
MSM313 has all wireless security options disabled. It is strongly
recommended that after performing this procedure, you enable a wireless
security option to properly safeguard the wireless network from intruders.
See Wireless protection in the HP MSM313/MSM323 Management and
Configuration Guide.
Note: Do not power on the MSM313 until directed.
A. Configure your computer
1. Disconnect your computer LAN port and configure it to use a static IP address in the
range 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254, and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Set the
default gateway to 192.168.1.1, and DNS server to 192.168.1.1. For example to do this
in Windows Vista, use Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network
Connections > Local Area Connection, right-click Properties then select Internet
Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) > Properties
2. Disable any wireless connection on your computer.
B. Connect the cables and power on the MSM313
1. Connect the cables:
•If using a PoE switch, use standard Ethernet cables to connect your computer and the
MSM313 to an unused factory-default PoE switch.
•If using a PoE injector, use a crossover Ethernet cable to connect your computer to
the data in port of the PoE injector and a standard Ethernet cable to connect the
MSM313 to the data and power out port of the PoE injector.
•If you are using a power supply, use a crossover Ethernet cable to connect your
computer to the MSM313 Ethernet port.
2. Power on the MSM313:
•If using a PoE switch or injector, power it on.
•If using a power supply, connect it to the MSM313 then power on the supply.
The MSM313 is fully operational when the power light stops flashing.
C. Perform these initial login tasks
Note: Some prompts only appear when the MSM313 is in its factory-default state.
1. In a web browser, open page: https://192.168.1.1.
2. At the security certificate prompt, select the option that allows you to continue to the
Website.
3. On the Login page, specify admin for both Username and Password and then select
Login.
4. If the License Agreement page appears, read the agreement and select Accept License
Agreement.
5. The registration page may appear. It is recommended that you register later by selecting
Maintenance > Registration.
6. If a Country prompt appears, select the country in which the MSM313 will operate.
Caution: The correct country must be selected. See Country of use on page 2.
7. At the password prompt it is recommended that you change the password. Specify the
new password and select Save. Passwords must be at least six characters long and
include four different characters.
Management tool
The management tool home page opens. The management tool is organized with menus and
sub-menus. Instructions for making menu selections, such as “select Network > Ports”
instruct you to select the Network menu and then the Ports sub-menu, as in this image:
D. Create a test user account
1. Select Users > Users.
2. Add a user, “Test” for example, specifying 0for Idle timeout, Session timeout, and
Concurrent sessions. Select Add.
E. Configure the Internet connection
By default, the MSM313 operates as a DHCP client to obtain its IP address from a DHCP
server.
Note: Alternate Internet port IP addressing is possible. See Assigning an IP address on
page 4.
1. Using a standard Ethernet cable, connect the MSM313 Internet port to the network on
which it will be used. For the purposes of this example, the network must have a DHCP
server and an Internet connection. Broadband routers typically include a DHCP server.
2. Verify that the wireless network interface of your computer is set to obtain an IP address
automatically and enable the interface.

For example, to obtain an IP address automatically in Windows Vista, use Control Panel
> Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections > Local Area
Connection, right-click Properties then select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) >
Properties, and make sure that Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain a DNS
server address automatically are both checked.
3. Connect to the wireless network. For example, in Windows Vista from the Start menu,
select Connect to, and then HP ProCurve from the list of available wireless networks.
You may have to wait a short time for this wireless network name to appear in the
wireless networks list.
F. Test the public access interface
Test the public access interface by using a wireless connection to log in.
1. In a Web browser enter the address of an Internet site such as www.hp.com. The
MSM313 intercepts the URL and displays the public access interface Login page. Enter
the Username and Password for the test account you created earlier and select Go.
2. Both the desired web page and the public access interface session page open.
Note: A popup blocker may prevent the session page from being displayed.
3. When finished, close the Web browser.
G. Performing additional configuration
1. Make sure that your computer is configured to obtain an IP address and DNS Server
address automatically.
2. Connect your computer to the same network as the MSM313.
3. Look in the DHCP server log for the Ethernet Base MAC address shown on the MSM313
label and take note of the corresponding IP address.
4. Relaunch the MSM313 management tool, this time using: https://<IP address
discovered in previous step>, to continue configuring the MSM313.
Assigning an IP address
The Internet port defaults to being a DHCP client. If your Internet service provider or network
administrator requires a different configuration, for example static IP address assignment,
configure it as follows:
1. From the MSM313 management tool, select Network > Ports > Internet port and choose
another option in the Internet port configuration page.
2. Select the corresponding Configure button and configure.
Caution: WIRELESS SECURITY: It is recommended that once the MSM313 is installed,
you review the security information in the HP MSM313/MSM323
Management and Configuration Guide and adjust the security to further
safeguard the wireless network from intruders.
Regulatory Notice for European Union and EFTA member countries
As of July 1st 2010, all wireless devices sold in EU countries and any countries that participate in the
EU free market must meet stringent Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) requirements for radar
detection and avoidance (EN 301.893 v1.5.1). The MSM313 is compliant.
Compliance notes
•Software version 5.2.7 is released for both rev A and rev B MSM313 APs.
•On the rev A MSM313, the 5 GHz DFS channels are enabled and can be used.
•On the rev B MSM313, the following additional 5 GHz DFS channels are disabled and cannot be
used:
•Channels 52, 56, 60 and 64 in the 5250-5350 MHz band
•Channels 100, 104, 108, 112, 116, 132, 136 and 140 in the 5470-5725 MHz band.
Note: Customers will not have to disable these 5 GHz DFS channels on rev A MSM313
APs received prior to July 1st, 2010.
For non-EU/EFTA customers using the WW version of the MSM313, there is no change to the
availability of DFS channels.
