1.1 Product Orientation
The SmartAX MA5606T Multi-service Access Module (hereinafter referred to as the
MA5606T) is a multi-service access product launched by Huawei. It has the following
orientations:
!As a mini–digital subscriber line access multiplexer (mini-DSLAM), it provides a small
number of users with access to the Internet independently or by subtending with the
MA5600T.
!As an optical network unit (ONU) in a gigabit-capable passive optical network (GPON),
it provides GPON uplink connections, thus realizing fiber to the neighborhood (FTTN)
access by coordinating with the optical line terminal (OLT) at the central office.
In the upstream direction, the MA5606T provides the following ports:
!GPON port (for uplink connection)
!Gigabit Ethernet (GE) optical ports (for uplink connection and subtending)
!Fast Ethernet (FE) optical ports (for uplink connection and subtending)
In the downstream direction, the MA5606T offers the following service ports:
!Asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL) and ADSL2+
!Single-pair high-speed digital subscriber line (SHDSL)
!Very high speed digital subscriber line 2 (VDSL2)

1.2.1 Abundant Port Types
The MA5606T offers various network ports, service ports and maintenance ports.
Table 1-1 lists the ports provided by the MA5606T.

1.2.2 Flexible Networking
As an integrated access platform, the MA5606T supports multiple access modes to suit
various network scenarios.
The MA5606T provides the following network solutions:
!Broadband multi-service access solution
The MA5606T supports the xDSL access solution. In addition, the MA5606T supports
subtending network configurations through the Ethernet ports.
!Triple play solution
Triple play users, including Internet access users, VoIP users and video users, are
connected to the MA5606T through the home gateway. After making the differentiation
and associated processing on the service packets, the MA5606T sends the packets to the
upper layer device.
For terminals using asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), such as an ADSL2+ terminal,
the MA5606T supports single–permanent virtual connection (single-PVC) or multi-PVC
to realize the triple play network configuration.
For terminals using packet transfer mode (PTM), such as a VDSL or Ethernet optical
terminal, the MA5606T also supports VLAN based triple play network configuration.
!P2P FE optical access solutionThe MA5606T connects to the ONU at the user home
through a simplex or a duplex fiber cable to provide services such as high-speed Internet
access, VoIP and IPTV.
!Private line interconnection solution
The MA5606T provides private line interconnection services for small-sized enterprise
users. Enterprise users are connected to the MA5606T in ADSL2+/SHDSL/VDSL2
access mode.
!Fiber to the neighborhood (FTTN) solution
The MA5606T can function as an ONU to connect users to the upstream OLT through
the GPON port, thus realizing FTTN access.
1.2.3 Operable Multicast Functions
The MA5606T supports the following carrier-class multicast capabilities:
!Service switching capacity of up to 24 Gbit/s
!Packet forwarding rate of up to 36 Mpps
!High integration of data switching, routing, and user management

foundation for operability and manageability of broadband multicast services.

!Controllable multicast to control users' access to multicast groups
!Transaction language 1 (TL1) interface on the Huawei N2000 element management
system (hereinafter referred to as the N2000) that enables the operation support system
(OSS) to control the authority of multicast users
!Connection admission control (CAC) for multicast users to guarantee that authenticated
users can enjoy high quality of service (QoS)

the following features to ensure the security of the system and the users.

1.2.7 Superior Maintainability and Manageability
The MA5606T provides excellent management, maintenance, and monitoring functions,
greatly easing fault locating and routine management.
!The MA5606T can be managed through a local or a remote terminal, or through the
centralized element management system (EMS) .
!In-service software upgrade
The main control board and service board support in-service upgrade, and version
rollback in case of an upgrade failure. You can upgrade the software:
−Through a serial port based on Xmodem
−Through an Ethernet port based on Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) or File
Transfer Protocol (FTP)
!The MA5606T supports network management through the command line interface (CLI)
or an inband/outband management interface. It also supports the management based on
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). Thus it can be managed by the N2000
in a centralized manner.
!The MA5606T provides mature alarm, diagnosis, and tracking functions. This can ease
your daily maintenance and management, boost network operation reliability, and ensure
network QoS.
!The MA5606T collects environment information through its environment monitoring
module to facilitate unattended maintenance. The information shows the temperature and
humidity of the equipment room, the power supply voltage, and the smoke alarms. This
helps to realize remote maintenance or unattended maintenance.
!The MA5606T adopts fans for heat dissipation, and provides indicators showing the
running status of the fans.
