ServeRAID M5016 SAS/SATA Controller for IBM System x
Quick Installation Guide
Before using this information and the product it supports, read the Important Notices and Warranty
Information document that comes with the ServeRAID M5016 SAS/SATA controller.
This Quick Installation Guide provides information about installing the ServeRAID M5016 SAS/SATA
controller.
Statement 1:
DANGER
Electrical current from power, telephone, and communication cables is hazardous.
To avoid a shock hazard:
vDo not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation,
maintenance, or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical storm.
vConnect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet.
vConnect to properly wired outlets any equipment that will be attached to this product.
vWhen possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables.
vNever turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or structural damage.
vDisconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems, networks, and modems before
you open the device covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration
procedures.
vConnect and disconnect cables as described in the following table when installing, moving, or
opening covers on this product or attached devices.
To Connect: To Disconnect:
1. Turn everything OFF.
2. First, attach all cables to devices.
3. Attach signal cables to connectors.
4. Turn device ON.

4. Remove all cables from devices.

Note: The illustrations in this document might differ slightly from your hardware.
To install the ServeRAID M5016 SAS/SATA controller in a server, complete the following steps.
1. Read the safety information that comes with the ServeRAID M5016 SAS/SATA controller.
2. Turn off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords.
3. Remove the server cover.
4. Remove PCI riser-card assembly 2.

5. Touch the static-protective package that contains the ServeRAID M5016 SAS/SATA controller to any
unpainted surface on the outside of the server; then, grasp the controller by the top edge or upper
corners and remove it from the package and inspect it for damage. Contact your IBM marketing
representative or authorized reseller if the ServeRAID M5016 SAS/SATA controller appears to be
damaged.
6. Connect the signal cable that is attached to the drive backplane for drive bays 0 through 3 to
controller port 0. Connect the other signal cable that is attached to the drive backplane for drive bays
4 through 7 to controller port 1.

7. Connect one end of the power module cable to the power module connector on the flash.
8. Align the edge connector on the adapter with the connector on PCI riser-card assembly 2; then,
insert the adapter into PCI riser-card assembly 2. Press the edge of the connector firmly into the
riser-card assembly. Make sure that the adapter snaps into the riser-card assembly securely.

Attention: When you install the ServeRAID M5016 SAS/SATA controller, make sure that the
adapter is correctly seated in the PCI riser-card assembly and that the riser-card assembly is securely
seated in the PCI riser-card connector on the system board before you turn on the server. An
incorrectly seated adapter might cause damage to the system board, the riser-card assembly, or the
adapter.

9. Connect the other end of the power module cable to the power module.
Attention: Disconnect the power module cable to the power module before removing the
ServeRAID M5016 SAS/SATA controller from the PCI riser-card assembly.
10. Attach the cable clip near the power module holder by following the installation instructions that
come with the server and option.

11. Install a ServeRAID M5100 series flash power module.
12. Reinstall the PCI riser-card assembly 2 in the server.
13. Perform any configuration tasks that are required for the adapter.
14. Replace the server cover.
15. Slide the server into the rack.
16. Reconnect the power cords and any cables that you removed.
17. Turn on the peripheral devices and the server.
