Overview
This guide is intended to be used by customers who are replacing Customer
Replaceable Units (CRUs) as well as trained service personnel who are replacing
Field Replaceable Units (FRUs). In this document, CRUs and FRUs will be referred
to as parts.
This guide does not include procedures for all parts. It is expected that cables,
switches, and certain mechanical parts can be replaced by trained service personnel
without the need for step-by-step procedures.
This guide contains instructions for replacing the following parts:

Tools required
To replace some parts in your computer, you might need aflat-blade or Phillips
screwdriver.
Handling static-sensitive devices
Static electricity, although harmless to you, can seriously damage computer
components and parts.
When replacing apart, do not open the static-protective package containing the
new part until the defective part has been removed from the computer and you are
ready to install the new part.
When you handle parts and other computer components, take these precautions to
avoid static-electricity damage:
vLimit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build up around
you.
vAlways handle parts and other computer components carefully. Handle
adapters, memory modules, system boards, and microprocessors by the edges.
Never touch any exposed circuitry.
vPrevent others from touching the parts and other computer components.
vBefore you replace anew part, touch the static-protective package containing the
part to ametal expansion-slot cover or other unpainted metal surface on the
computer for at least two seconds. This reduces static electricity in the package
and your body.
vWhen possible, remove the new part from the static-protective packaging and
install it directly in the computer without setting the part down. When this is
not possible, place the static-protective package that the part came in on a
smooth, level surface and place the part on it.
vDo not place the part on the computer cover or other metal surface.

Chapter 1. Locations
This chapter provides illustrations to help locate the various connectors, controls
and components of the computer. To remove the computer cover, see “Removing
the cover” on page 5.
Locating the connectors on the front of your computer
The following illustration shows the location of connectors on the front of the
computer.
Note: Not all computer models will have the following connectors.

Identifying parts on the system board
The system board (sometimes called the planar or motherboard) is the main circuit
board in your computer. It provides basic computer functions and supports a
variety of devices.

Removing the cover
Important
Turn off your computer and wait 3to 5minutes to let the computer cool
before removing the computer cover.
To remove the computer cover:
1. Remove any media (diskettes, CDs, or tapes) from the drives, shut down your
operating system, and turn off all attached devices.
2. Unplug all power cords from electrical outlets.
3. Disconnect all cables attached to the computer. This includes power cords,
input/output (I/O) cables, and any other cables that are connected to the
computer.
4. Remove any locking devices such as apadlock or Kensington lock that secure
the cover.

5. Press the buttons on the sides of the computer and pivot the rear end of the
cover up toward the front of the computer.

Replacing the power supply
Attention

This section provides instructions on how to replace the power supply.
1. Remove the computer cover. See “Removing the cover” on page 5.

2. Remove the four screws at the rear of the chassis.
Note: You will need aflat-blade screwdriver.
3. Pivot the drive bay assembly upward to gain access to the system board.

4. Disconnect the power supply cables 1 and 2 from the system board.
5. Disconnect the power supply cables from all of the drives.
6. Remove the cables from the cable clips and ties.
7. Remove the power supply assembly from the computer.

8. Install the new power supply assembly into the chassis so that the screw holes
in the power supply assembly align with those in the chassis.
Note: Use only the screws that were provided.

9. Install and tighten the four screws at the rear of the chassis to secure the
power supply assembly.
10. Reconnect the power supply cables to all the drives and the system board.
11. Route the cables through the cable clips and ties.
12. Go to “Completing the parts replacement” on page 25.
Replacing the system board

This section provides instructions on how to replace the system board.
1. Remove the computer cover. See “Removing the cover” on page 5.
2. Remove any PCI adapters. See “Replacing aPCI adapter” on page 21.
3. Carefully take note of the location of all cable connections on the system
board. It will be necessary to reconnect them properly when installing anew
system board.
4. Disconnect all cables connected to the system board. See “Identifying parts on
the system board” on page 3.
5. Remove the seven screws that attach the system board to the chassis and slide
the system board toward the drive bay assembly. Carefully lift out the system
board.

6. Place the failing system board next to the new system board on aclean, flat
surface.
7. Remove all memory modules from the failing system board and install them
in the same location on the new system board. See “Replacing memory
modules” on page 20. Return here after installing the memory modules.
8. Remove the microprocessor from the failing system board and install it on the
new system board. See “Replacing the microprocessor” on page 11. Return
here after replacing the microprocessor.
9. Install the new system board by aligning the slots in the metal plate on the
bottom of the system board with the tabs on the chassis, then slide the system
board toward the rear of the computer until the screw holes are aligned
properly.

Important
If the metal plate is not aligned correctly when you install the screws,
you might damage the system board.
10. Install the seven screws that secure the system board to the chassis.
11. Reconnect all cables that were disconnected from the system board. See
“Identifying parts on the system board” on page 3.
12. Replace any PCI adapters that were removed. See “Replacing aPCI adapter”
on page 21.
13. Go to “Completing the parts replacement” on page 25.

Replacing the microprocessor
Attention
Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading the “Important safety
information” in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer or in the
Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM). To obtain copies of the Quick Reference or HMM,go
to http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=part-video.
When you receive anew microprocessor, you will also receive anew heat sink and
vacuum pen. You must use the new heat sink with the new microprocessor. If you
use the old heat sink with the new microprocessor, your computer might over heat
and could cause intermittent problems.
Important
Do not touch the gold contacts on the bottom of the microprocessor. Use the
vacuum pen provided to remove and install the microprocessor. If you must
touch the microprocessor, touch only the sides.
This section provides instructions on how to replace the microprocessor.
Important
Leave your computer turned off for at least one hour before removing the
microprocessor to allow the thermal interface between the microprocessor and
the heat sink time to cool down.

2. Pivot the drive bay assembly upward to gain access to the system board.

3. Remove the heat sink 2 from the system board by pivoting the lever 1
securing the heat sink until it is fully in the up position. Carefully lift the heat
sink off of the system board.
Note: If you are only replacing the system board, place the heat sink on its
side on aclean, flat surface so the thermal interface on the bottom of the heat
sink does not touch the surface and become contaminated.
4. Release the lever 2 securing the microprocessor 1 then pivot the
microprocessor retainer 3 until it is fully in the open position.
