About This Operator’s Guide
This guide describes basic setup procedures for the IBM
®
6500 printer. This
guide has been designed to meet the needs of all users, from beginners to
those experienced with these printers.
This document contains:
vBasic Setup Procedures: describes the operator panel, how to load paper
and ribbon, and how to use the optional Power Paper Stacker.
Conventions
The following conventions are used in this guide:

This Quick Start Guide provides general information for use of your printer.
For detailed information, refer to your IBM Infoprint 6500 Line Matrix Printers:
User’s Manual.
How To Use The Operator Panel
Detail description and instructions for using the operator panel are contained
in Chapter 3of the IBM Infoprint 6500 Line Matrix Printers User’s Manual.
How To Use The Quick Setup Menu
Detailed menu structure for using the Quick Setup menu is contained in
Chapter 4of the IBM Infoprint 6500 Line Matrix Printers: User’s Manual.

Remove Packing Materials
CAUTION:
To avoid shipping damage, reinstall the shipping restraints whenever you
move or ship the printer.
Save the cardboard packing, foam blocks, and bubble wrap along with the
other packing materials in case you need to move the printer. If it is necessary
to move the printer, reinstall the shipping restraints, reversing the steps in this
section.
1. Raise the printer cover.
2. Peel the tape off carefully and lift the protective film off the control panel
message display.

3. Open the blue tractor doors.
4. Push the blue tractor locks down.
5. Raise the forms thickness lever to the fully open (raised) position.
6. Remove the envelope that contains the sample configuration printout.
7. Store the envelope in the pouch attached to the left interior side of the
cabinet.
8. Remove the cardboard packing.

9. Remove the hammer protective foam from between the ribbon mask and
the platen.

10. Turn the Auto Platen Stop Knob clockwise or counterclockwise to
position “A”.
11. Rotate the platen lever downward to the set position “A”.
12. Rotate the platen protective foam toward the front of the printer and out
from under the support shaft.
13. Remove the platen protective foam.

14. Remove the six wood blocks.
Note: Make sure the tape securing the wood blocks is removed entirely.

Adjust The Paper Supports
Squeeze the paper support tabs and slide the blue paper supports inward
until they are approximately four inches from its corresponding blue tractor
door.

Release the Paper Chains -Cabinet Model
Note: Steps 1—3 in this section is for the passive stacker. If you have the
power paper stacker installed, skip this procedure and go to “Remove
the Shipping Restraints from the Power Paper Stacker (if Equipped)” on
page 12.
1. Open the cabinet rear door.
2. Cut the tie wraps and release the paper stacking chains from the bags at
the top rear of the printer frame. Remove the tie wraps and bags.
3. Make sure each chain hangs freely with no kinks or knots.
