Welcome to the small
circle of individuals who, if we are to
be absolutely precise, demand slightly
more of a watch than absolute precision.
Appreciation of a watch is more than
mere appreciation of the correct time.
It is enthusiasm for an ingenious idea.
For the interplay between precision

devoting rather more of our time to

THE TECHNICAL
REFINEMENTS OF THE
PORTUGIESER
PERPETUAL CALENDAR
TOURBILLON
Your IWC watch shows you the time in
hours and minutes, the moon phase,
the day, the date, the month and the
year in four digits, as well as the remain
ing power reserve. The mechanical
movement with automatic winding
has a power reserve of approximately
7 days (168 hours) when fully wound.
Your Portugieser Perpetual Calendar
Tourbillon is protected by an arched
edge sapphire glass of hardness
grade 9 on Mohs’ scale. Your watch
is waterresistant 3 bar. The engraved

rotor made of 18carat red gold winds
the watch in both directions of rotation
via the Pellaton winding system. Your
watch is equipped with a flying minute
tourbillon, a unique micro mechanism,
which minimizes the effect of gravity
on the accuracy. The tourbillon, an
invention made in the aftermath of the
French Revolution, has always been
regarded as the ultimate challenge
in the quest for absolute mechanical
watchmaking precision. More specific
ally, the purpose of the mechanism is
to counterbalance the onesided pull
of the earth’s gravity on the balance.
This is because the residual gravita
tional error of the balance influences
the accuracy, depending on the pos
ition of the watch. Fortunately, there

is a way to overcome this problem
caused by one of the basic laws of
physics: the balance, the pallets and
the escape wheel are mounted in
a minute cage that rotates around
itself once every minute. In this way,
the effect of the gravitational error is
practically elim inated. To ensure that
this extraordinary watch continues to
perform faultlessly in the future, it is
essential to observe a few important
operating instructions.

THE CROWN

NORMAL POSITION
With the crown in the normal position
(0), you can also wind the automatic
movement by hand. A few revolutions
of the crown in aclockwise direction
are enough to start the movement.

However, it is better to wind the watch
to approximately the 3day marking on
the power reserve as this will ensure
optimal accuracy. The crown must
always be in position 0 when you are
wearing your watch.
SETTING THE TIME
AND CALENDAR
If you have not worn your watch for
more than 7 days, the power reserve
display will go back to 0 and the watch
will normally stop at midnight, as the
changeover of the calendar uses
agreat deal of energy.

Warning:
If your watch has stopped between
10 p.m. and 2 a.m., you should on
no account alter the date using the
rapid-advance date display with
the crown in position 1. This would
result in damage to a component in
the calendar mechanism which would
require repair by a watchmaker. The
same applies to turning the crown too
rapidly when setting the calendar.
We recommend winding the move
ment at least 20 times with the crown
in position 0. Then pull the crown out
to position 2 in order to set the hour
and minute hands to approximately 6
a.m. To set the time accurately to the
second, it is best to stop the movement

as the small seconds hand passes 60.
Push back the crown to position 1. In
this position, you can safely set the date
to the previous day. If you now pull the
crown out to position 2, you can set
the exact time in hours and minutes.
When doing this, move the minute
hand afew minute strokes beyond the
time to be set. Then position the minute
hand by moving it gently backwards
until it is exactly above the correct
minute stroke. This ensures that the
minute hand begins to move immedi
ately when you restart the movement.
If the date does not jump to today’s
date when it passes 12o’clock, you
must wind the hour hand forward by
a further 12 hours. Once the hour and
minute have been set to the correct

time using this process, push back the
crown to position0.
Warning:
In order to protect the watch from
the ingress of water, the crown must
always be in position 0 and should only
be pulled out to position 1 or 2 when
setting the watch.
POWER RESERVE DISPLAY
The power reserve display is divided
into 7 days with continuous display. The
winding mechanism winds the watch
continuously while you are wearing it,
and you can follow the process on the
power reserve indicator. The marking in

the area of the last day tells you that the
power reserve is about to expire. You
should then wind the watch by hand, if
necessary, since the precision can be
reduced in this area. In order to maxi
mize the running time of your watch, we
recommend that you wind the crown
up to 8 additional revolutions beyond
the marking of the full power reserve
(7 days).

MOON PHASE DISPLAY

Your watch features a moon phase
display, which, with the help of a trans
mission, displays the time from one
full moon to the next with 28 days,
12 hours and 44 minutes as precisely
as possible. The moon phase display
advances in wholeday increments
together with the calendar. As a full

moon can occur at any time of night
or day, it may be that your watch dis
plays the calendar date of the full or
new moon but that the moon phase
display has not reached this pos ition
due to the exact time of the full or
new moon. IWC sets the moon phase
display so that it displays the full and
new moon precisely on as many dates
in the year as possible.

CROSSING TIME ZONES AND

Setting when crossing time zones:
– When crossing time zones in an east
erly direction, you should simply set
the time forward to the new local
time.

– When crossing time zones in a west
erly direction, you can set the hands
of your watch back to the actual time
of day. When doing this, however,
you must not move back into the cal
endar’s automatic switching phase,
i.e. beyond 2 a.m. If this situation
occurs when you are travelling west,
you should set the local time of your
destination before 10 p.m. You must
not turn the hands back between
10 p.m. and 2 a.m. This is because
the calendar does not move back
wards by one day when the hands
are turned back beyond midnight,
but remains on the same day. If you
go past the end of the calendar’s
switching phase (i.e. beyond 2 a.m.)
when turning the hands back, you run
the risk of the calendar advan cing by
