When installing, ope ating and maintaining you
Jøtul OSLO F500 woodstove, follow the guidelines
p esented in these inst uctions, and make them
available to anyone using o se vicing the stove.

a solid fuel bu ning appliance. In the U.S., the
National Fi e P otection Associations Code, NFPA
211, Standards for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents
and Solid Fuel Burning Appliances, o simila
egulations, may apply to the installation of a solid
fuel bu ning appliance in you a ea.
In Canada, the guideline is established by the CSA
Standa d, CAN/CSA-B365-M93, Installation
Code for Solid-Fuel-Burning Appliances and
Equipment. Always consult you local building

install the optional outside ai manifold system,
which allows the di ect connection of ai f om
outside the house to the stove.

Some fuels will, du ing combustion, sepa ate
ca bon monoxide and gene ate it in the bu n
chambe . Ca bon monoxide is toxic, so please
follow the guidelines in this manual fo p ope
ope ation of you Jøtul OSLO F500.

TOP OR REAR EXIT FLUE
The Oslo F500 is shipped with the flue colla ,
gasketing and ha dwa e inside the stove. To install
the flue colla in the top o ea exit position emove
the tape f om the gasketing and adhe e to the g oove
on the back of the stove a ound the flue opening.
Place the flue colla on the stove in the top o ea
exit position and secu e with the nut, bolt and washe .
The nut and washe a e placed on the inside of the
stove.
STOVE PIPE
CHIMNEY CONNECTOR
The chimney connecto is a single walled pipe used
to connect the stove to the chimney. Fo use with
the OSLO F500 the chimney connecto MUST be
6 in diamete , with a minimum thickness of 24 gauge
black steel.
Aluminum and Galvanized steel pipe is not acceptable
fo use with the OSLO F500. These mate ials
cannot withstand the ext eme tempe atu es of a
wood fi e and can give off toxic fumes when heated.
Do not u e the connector pipe a a chimney.
Fo the best pe fo mance the chimney connecto
should be as sho t and di ect as possible, with no
mo e than two 90° elbows. The maximum ho izontal
un is 36 and a ecommended total length of stove
pipe should not exceed 10 feet. Always slope
ho izontal uns upwa d ¼ pe foot towa d the
chimney.
No pa t of the chimney connecto may pass th ough
an attic o oof space, closet o othe concealed
space, o th ough a floo o ceiling. All sections of
the chimney connecto s must be accessible fo
cleaning. Whe e passage th ough a wall o pa tition
of combustible const uction is desi ed, the installation
must confo m with NFPA 211 o CAN/CSA-B365,
and is also add essed in this manual.
DO NOT CONNECT THIS UNIT TO A
CHIMNEY FLUE SERVICING ANOTHER
APPLIANCE.
Reminder:
You local officials have final autho ity in
dete mining if a p oposed installation is
acceptable. Any equi ement, that is equested
by the local autho ity having ju isdiction, that is
not specifically add essed in THIS manual,
defaults to NFPA 211, and local codes in the
U.S. o in Canada, CAN/CSA-B365-M and local
codes.
Each chimney connecto o stove pipe section must
be installed to the stove flue colla and to each othe
with the male (c imped) end towa d the stove. See
figure 1.
This p events any amount of condensed o liquid
c eosote f om unning down the outside of the pipe
o the stove top. All joints, including the flue colla
connection must be secu ed with th ee sheet metal
sc ews to ensu e that the sections do not sepa ate.

Prefabricated Chimneys
If a p efab icated metal chimney is to be used it
must be a chimney type that is tested and listed fo
use with solid fuel bu ning appliances. High
Tempe atu e (HT) Chimney Standa d UL 103 fo
the U.S. and High Tempe atu e Standa d ULC
S-629 fo Canada.
Ma onry Chimney
When installing the OSLO F500 into a mason y
chimney you must confo m to all of the following
guidelines:
·The mason y chimney must have a fi eclay line
o equivalent, with a minimum thickness of
5/8 and must be installed with ef acto y mo ta .
The e must be at least ½ ai space between
the flue line and chimney wall.
·The fi eclay flue line must have a nominal size
of 8 X 8, and should not be la ge than
8X 12. If a ound fi eclay line is to be used it
must have a minimum inside diamete of 6 and
not la ge than 8 in diamete . If a chimney with
la ge dimensions is to be used, it should be
elined with an app op iate line that is code
app oved.
·The mason y wall of the chimney, if b ick o
modula block, must be a minimum of 4 nominal
thickness. A mountain o ubble stone wall must
be at least 12 thick.
·A newly-built chimney must confo m to local
codes and in thei absence must ecognize
national egulations.
·When using an existing chimney, it must be
inspected by a p ofessional licensed chimney
sweep, fi e official, o code office , to ensu e
that the chimney is in p ope wo king o de .
·No othe appliance can be vented into the same
flue.
·An ai tight clean-out doo should be located at
the base of the chimney.

CHIMNEY REQUIREMENTS
The e a e two types of chimneys suitable fo the
OSLO F500:
1. A code- app oved mason y chimney with a flue
line .
2. A p efab icated chimney complying with the
equi ements fo Type HT (2100°F) chimneys
pe UL 103 o ULC S629.
The chimney size should not be less than the c oss-
sectional a ea of the flue colla , and not mo e than
th ee times g eate than the c oss-sectional a ea of
the flue colla .
When selecting a chimney type and the location fo
the chimney in the house, keep this in mind: it is the
chimney that makes the stove wo k, NOT the stove
that makes the chimney wo k. This is because a
chimney actually c eates a suction, called d aft
which pulls ai th ough the stove.
Seve al facto s affect d aft: chimney height, c oss-
sectional a ea (size), and tempe atu e of the chimney,
as well as the p oximity of su ounding t ees o
buildings.
As a esult, a sho t mason y chimney on the exte io
of a house will give the poo est pe fo mance. This
is because it can be ve y difficult to wa m the
chimney the eby c eating inadequate d aft. In
ext emely cold no the n a eas it may be necessa y
to eline the chimney o extend its height to help
establish d aft.
Oppositely, a tall mason y chimney inside the house
is easie to keep wa m and will pe fo m the best.
The following guidelines give the necessa y chimney
equi ements based on the national code (ANSI-
NFPA 211fo the US. And CSA CAN-B365 fo
Canada). Howeve , many local codes diffe f om
the national code to take into account climate,
altitude, o othe facto s. It is impo tant that you
check with you local building officials to find out
what codes apply in you a ea befo e installing you
new OSLO F500.

WALL PASS-THROUGHS
When you installation unavoidably equi es the
chimney connecto to pass th ough a combustible wall
to each the chimney, always consult you local
building officials, and be su e any mate ials to be used
have been tested and listed fo wall pass-th oughs.
In the U.S.
The National Fi e P otection Associations publication,
NFPA 211, Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces,
Vents and Solid Fuel Burning Appliances pe mits
fou methods fo passing th ough a combustible wall.
Befo e p oceeding with any method be su e to consult
with you local building officials to discuss any local
code equi ements.
Common Method
When passing th ough a combustible wall to a
mason y chimney this method equi es the emoval
of all combustible mate ials f om at least 12 a ound
the chimney connecto s p oposed location. With a 6
ound line the minimum a ea equi ed would be 31
x 31 squa e.
The space is then filled with at least 12 of b ick
a ound a fi eclay line . Remembe , the line must be
ASTM C35 o equivalent, with a minimum wall
thickness of 5/8.
It is impo tant to emembe to locate the pass-th ough
at least 18 f om the ceiling fo p ope clea ance to
combustibles.
It will be necessa y to cut wall studs, install heade s,
and const uct a sill f ame to maintain the p ope
dimensions and to suppo t the weight of the b ick.
The b icks must be solid b ick with a minimum of
3 ½  thick (4 nominal).
Ref acto y mo ta must be used at the junction of the
chimney and the pass-th ough line . The pass-th ough
line must not penet ate the chimney line beyond the
inne su face of the chimney line . Use ext eme ca e
when const ucting the hole in the chimney line , the
tiles can shatte easily. See figure 3.
The manufactu e s installation inst uctions must be
followed p ecisely. Always maintain the p ope
clea ance to combustibles as established by the pipe
manufactu e . This clea ance is usually a minimum
of 2, although it may va y by manufactu e o fo
ce tain chimney components.
Chimney Height
Whethe a mason y chimney o p efab icated metal
chimney is used it must be the equi ed height above
the oof line.
The equi ement is:
The chimney must be at least 3 feet highe than the
highest point whe e it passes th ough the oof and at
least 2 feet highe than the highest pa t of the oof o
st uctu e that is within 10 feet of the chimney,
measu ed ho izontally. See figure 2.
Chimneys sho te than 14 feet may not p ovide
adequate d aft. This could esult is smoke spilling
into the oom f om the stove when loading the stove,
o when the doo is open. In addition, inadequate
d aft can cause back puffing, which is a build up of
gases inside the fi ebox.
Othe times, chimney height can c eate excessive
d aft which can cause high stove tempe atu es and
sho t bu n times. Excessive d afts can be co ected
by installing a butte fly dampe .If you suspect you
have a d aft p oblem, consult you deale .

In Canada
The Canada the standa d has been established by the
Canadian Standa d Association. The installation must
confo m to CAN/CSA-B365, Installation Code for
Solid Fuel Burning Appliances and Equipment.

Common Method
This method equi es the emoval of all combustible
mate ials f om at least 18 (457mm) a ound the
chimney connecto s p oposed location. With a 6
ound line the minimum a ea equi ed would be
43 x 43 squa e.
It is impo tant to emembe to locate the pass-th ough
at least 18 f om the ceiling to maintain the p ope
clea ance to combustibles.
The space that is clea ed of combustible mate ials
must then emain empty. Sheet metal panels can then
be used to cove the a ea. Howeve , when using a
panel on both sides of the wall each cove must be
installed on noncombustible space s at least 1 f om
the wall. If one panel of sheet metal is to be used it
may be installed flush to the wall.

CONNECTING TO THE CHIMNEY
Ma onry Chimney
When installing a OSLO F500 into a mason y
chimney th ough a thimble(the opening th ough the
chimney wall to the flue), the thimble must be lined
with ce amic tile o metal and be secu ely cemented
in place.
The chimney connecto /stove pipe must slide
completely inside the thimble to the inne su face o
the flue line . It may be necessa y to make use of a
thimble sleeve (a pipe with a slightly smalle diamete
than standa d stove pipe). This special pipe can be
easily installed into a thimble. See figure 4.
Make su e the connecto pipe o thimble sleeve does
not p ot ude into the flue line , the eby est icting the
a ea the smoke has to flow th ough. This bottle-neck
will have a negative affect on the chimney system.
The chimney connecto should be sealed at the thimble
with ef acto y cement and the stove pipe leading to
the stove should have a minimum of th ee sc ews.

Hearth-mount into a Ma onry Fireplace
The OSLO F500 may be installed into a mason y
fi eplace p ovided the height of the opening is a
minimum of 29. The sho t leg package educes the
stoves height by 2 1/4.
When installing the OSLO F500 into a mason y
fi eplace, code equi es that the fi eplace dampe plate
be emoved o secu ely fixed in the open position. A
connecto pipe must then extend f om the stoves flue
exit th ough the dampe a ea of the fi eplace and into
the chimney tile line . See figure 5
The inside a ea of the flue line must not be less than
the a ea of the stoves flue exit, and cannot be mo e
than th ee times g eate than the c oss sectional a ea
of the stoves flue exit.
If the chimney line is too la ge to accommodate the
stove, an app oved elining system must be installed
to esize the flue.
A new sheet metal dampe block-off plate must be
installed a ound the connecto pipe at the dampe
f ame and sealed with the p ope sealant (usually
High-Temp Silicone).
Fi eplace installation must also obse ve the p ope
clea ances to su ounding t im and mantels (add essed
in clea ance section of this manual). In addition,
fi eplace installations must also adhe e to the floo
p otection guidelines specified in the following section.
Prefabricated Chimney
When installing the OSLO F500 to a p efab icated
metal chimney always follow the pipe manufactu es
inst uctions and be su e to use the components that
a e equi ed. This usually includes some type of
smoke pipe adapte  that is secu ed to the bottom
section of the metal chimney and allows the chimney
pipe to be secu ed to it with th ee sheet metal sc ews.

CLEARANCES TO COMBUSTIBLES
Floor Protection
Floo p otection unde the stove, must be const ucted
of a non-combustible mate ial fo p otection f om
adiant heat, spa ks, and embe s.
Individual sections of floo p otection must be
mo ta ed togethe to p event spa ks f om falling
th ough to combustible mate ials. Any ca peting must
be emoved f om unde the floo p otection.
In the U.S.and Canada
The OSLO F500 must be installed on a non-
combustible su face extending a minimum of 18
(460mm) in f ont of the stove and the left side load
doo (measu ed f om the legs). And 8 (200mm) on
the ight side and back of the stove (measu ed f om
side and back panels).
This will esult in a minimum floo p otection of
54.5W X 49D. See figure 8.
In a ea vent installation the floo p otection must
also extend unde the stove pipe a minimum of 2
(50mm) beyond eithe side of the pipe.

Clearance to wall and ceiling
The following clea ances have been tested to UL and
ULC standa ds and a e the minimum clea ances
specifically established fo the Jøtul OSLO F500.
The following diag ams give the equi ed clea ances
you must maintain when installing the OSLO F500
nea combustible su faces.
A combustible su face is anything that can bu n (i.e.
sheet ock, wall pape , wood, fab ics etc.). These
su faces a e not limited to those that a e visible and
also include mate ials that a e behind non-combustible
mate ials.
If you a e not su e of the combustible natu e of a
mate ial, consult you local fi e officials.
Remembe : Fi e Resistant mate ials a e conside ed
combustible; they a e difficult to ignite, but will bu n.
Also Fi e- ated sheet ock is also conside ed
combustible.

U ing Shield to Reduce Clearance
Pipe shields: When using listed pipe shields to educe
the connecto clea ance to combustibles, it must sta t
1 above the lowest exposed point of the connect pipe
and extend ve tically a minimum of 25 above the top
su face of the stove.
Double wall pipe: Listed double wall pipe is an
acceptable alte native to connecto pipe heatshields.
Wall-Mounted P otection: When educing clea ances
th ough the use of wall mounted p otection:
In the U.S. efe to NFPA 211, Standard for
Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents and Solid Fuel
Burning Appliances, fo acceptable mate ials, p ope

NOTICE
Accessories for woodstoves for clearance reduction have
been developed by many manufacturers. If not following
the methods of the installation codes, be sure that any
accessory you choose has been tested by an independent
laboratory and carries the laboratory s testing mark.
Make sure to follow all of the manufacturer s
instructions.
Always contact your local building inspector or fire
officials about restriction and requirements in your area.
Reminder, it is the local officials who have final authority
in the installations approval.
ALCOVE
The OSLO F500 can be installed in an ALCOVE
situation p ovided: See figures 9 and 10.
1. The stove must be installed with listed double
wall pipe.
2. In a PROTECTED alcove installation both side
walls and ea wall must be p otected pe NFPA
211 o CAN/CSA-B365. The wall p otection
must be elevated 1 f om the floo and at least 1
off the combustible wall to allow fo an ai -flow.
3. The height of the wall p otection including the
bottom ai space must be 48.
4. The Bottom heatshield is equi ed in all Alcove
installations.
5. If a listed (UL/ULC) hea th boa d is NOT used
the hea th that is const ucted MUST have a
minimum R value of 1.6 (see Appendix A).
6. Minimum ceiling height in an unp otected installa
tion, off the top of the stove is 41(1040mm) The
minimum ceiling height off the top of the stove in
a p otected ceiling installation is 15(380mm).
7. ALCOVE floor protection must be: a UL/ULC
or WHI listed hearth pad or a non combustible
material with a minimum R value of 0.5.
In Canada, efe to CAN/CSA-B365, Installation
Code for Solid-Fuel Burning Appliances and
Equipment, also fo acceptable mate ials, p ope
sizing and const uction guidelines.
Stove Mounted Heatshield: A stove ea heatshield
has been specifically designed fo the OSLO F500.
In the U.S. and Canada the ea heatshield pa t
numbe is # 154332.
NO OTHER HEAT SHIELD MAY BE USED.
MOBILE HOME INSTALLATIONS
The OSLO F500 has been app oved fo use in mobile
homes in the U.S. and Canada, p ovided:
1. The stove is secu ed to the floo o the mobile
home. Floo mounting kit #750304
2. The stove is p ovided outside ai fo combustion.
Outside Ai kit #154335(see page 16 for more details)
3. The stove must be g ounded to the mobile home
f ame pe NFPA 70.

ARNING:

MUST BE MAINTAINED.
OPERATION
Befo e building a fi e in you new OSLO F500, please
ead the following section ca efully and completely.
Do Not Burn
Fi st this stove is designed to bu n natu al wood ONLY,
wood that has been ai -d ied fo a pe iod of 6 to 14
months will p ovide the cleanest most efficient heat.
Do not burn:

*Solvents *Any synthetic fuel o logs
The bu ning of any of these mate ials can esult in
the elease of toxic fumes. Neve use gasoline,
gasoline-type lante n fuel, ke osene, cha coal lighte
fluid, o simila liquids to sta t o f eshen-up the
fi e. Always keep such liquids away f om the heate
at all times.
Control on the OSLO F500
A single ai cont ol leve cont ols the bu n time and
heat output of the stove. This p ima y ai cont ol
leve is located on the f ont of the stove di ectly above
the ashlip. The p ima y ai leve cont ols the amount
of ai that ente s the stove fo combustion.
When fi st sta ting o eviving the fi e: the p ima y
cont ol leve should be at the far right po ition, which
allows the maximum amount of ai into the stove.
The mo e ai ente ing the stove the hotte the fi e the
sho te the bu n time. Moving the leve to the left
educes the ai -flow into the stove which p olongs
the fi e at a lowe heat output. See figure 11.
Breaking in your new tove
You new OSLO F500 is const ucted of cast i on and
stove fu nace cement. This type of const uction
equi es the stove to be b oken-in g adually so that
heat expansion does not occu too quickly and cause
damage.
Complete the following steps fo the p ope b eak-in
p ocedu e fo the OSLO F500:
To monito the stoves tempe atu e, Jøtul
ecommends the use of a magnetic stove-top
the momete , placed di ectly on the co ne of the
stoves top plate.
1. Light a small fi e, newspape and kindling only,
only allow the stove to each a maximum su face
tempe atu e of 200°. Bu n fo app oximately 1
hou .
2. Allow stove to cool to oom tempe atu e.
3. Light a second fi e, allowing the stove to each
a maximum tempe atu e of 300° fo 1 hou .
4. Cool the stove to oom tempe atu e.
5. Light a thi d fi e and g adually allow the stove
to each a su face tempe atu e of 400°
6. Cool stove to oom tempe atu e. This
completes the b eak-in p ocedu e.
Neve allow the stove to exceed a 400° su face
tempe atu e du ing any b eak-in fi e with the
exception of the last b eak-in fi e.
Note: IT IS NORMAL fo a new painted stove to
emit an odo and even smoke du ing its fi st seve al
fi es. This is caused by the seasoning of the high
tempe atu e paint and will diminish with each fi e and
will eventually disappea . Opening a window o doo
to p ovide additional ventilation will educe the odo
as this p ocess takes its cou se.

Starting and Maintaining a Fire
Burn only olid wood directly on the bottom
grate of the tove, do not elevate the fire in any
way.
The a h pan door on the tove mu t alway be
ecurely clo ed when the tove i in operation.
Bu ning the stove with the ashpan open will ove -fi e
the stove and cause inte io damage.
With the p ima y ai cont ol leve in the full open
position, sta t with seve al sheets of c umbled
newspape placed di ectly on the g ate. On top of
the newspape , place seve al pieces of small d y
kindling (app ox. 1 in diamete ) with two to th ee
la ge logs (app ox. 3 to 5 in diamete ) on top.
Light the fi e and close the doo , slowly building the
fi e by adding la ge and la ge logs. Be su e to
follow the b eak-in p ocedu e befo e c eating a fi e
that will damage the stove.
Once the stove has eached a su face tempe atu e
ange of between 400° and 600°, adjust the p ima y
ai cont ol leve as necessa y to gene ate the heat
output and bu n time desi ed.
Jøtul ecommends the use of a magnetic stove top
the momete to monito the su face tempe atu e of
the stove. The optimum su face tempe atu e ange
fo the most efficient bu n is between 400° and 600°.
See figu e 12 below fo the optimum locations of a
stove-top the momete .
NEVER OVERFIRE THE STOVE. IF ANY PART OF
THE STOVE OR CHIMNEY GLO S, YOU ARE
OVERFIRING, AND A HOUSE FIRE OR SERIOUS
DAMAGE TO THE STOVE OR CHIMNEY COULD
RESULT. IMMEDIATELY CLOSE DO N THE AIR
CONTROL IF YOU NOTICE THIS CONDITION.
Adding Fuel
When eloading the stove while it is still hot and a bed
of hot embe s still exist, follow this eloading
p ocedu e:
·Always wea gloves when tending to the stove.
·Push the ai cont ol leve to the full open position
(fa ight).
·Wait a few seconds befo e opening the doo .
·Use a stove tool o poke to dist ibute the hot
embe s equally a ound the fi ebox.
·Load the fuel, usually with smalle logs fi st.
·Close the doo , be su e to latch the doo tightly.
·Wait 5  10 minutes befo e adjusting the p ima y
ai to the desi ed heat output setting.
(If you have at least a 2 thick embe bed when
eloading, it may be possible to close the doo
and immediately adjust the ai cont ol setting).
The Formation of Creo ote
When wood is bu ned slowly and at low tempe atu es,
it p oduces ta and othe o ganic vapo s, which
combine with moistu e to fo m c eosote. The slow
moving smoke ca ies the c eosote vapo s, which
condense in the coole chimney flues, and this c eosote
then sticks to the chimney walls.
The c eosote that accumulates in the chimney is highly
flammable and is the fuel of chimney fi es. To p event
chimney fi es it is impo tant to have the chimney and
chimney connecto pipe inspected and/o cleaned
semi-annually. A qualified chimney sweep o othe
autho ized se vice pe son can p ovide this se vice.
It is also impo tant to emembe that chimney size,
tempe atu e and height all affect d aft which in tu n
affects the fo mation of c eosote. Be su e to follow
the installation and ope ation guidelines established in
this manual.

MAINTENANCE
A h remomal :
OF COURSE, FOR YOUR
PROTECTION ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY
GLOVES WHEN HANDLING THE ASH PAN.
Ash emoval will be equi ed pe iodically depending
on how f equently the stove is used. Conveniently,
the OSLO F500 is equipped with an ash pan assembly
fo easy ash emoval, without the need fo opening
the f ont doo s.
The ash pan doo is located unde the f ont ashlip of
the stove. To open the ash doo inse t the pin on the
end of you specially designed ash tool into the hole
on the ash doo latch. Rotate the doo
counte clockwise to unlatch the doo and clockwise
to latch the doo .
Remove the ash pan. When the stove is in ope ation
always close the ash pan doo befo e leaving to
dispose of the ashes.
The ashes should be placed in a metal containe
equipped with a tight sealing lid. The containe should
be placed on a noncombustible floo o on the g ound,
well away f om all combustible mate ials, pending final
disposal. If the ashes a e disposed of by bu ial in soil
o othe wise locally dispe sed, they should be etained
in the closed containe until all cinde s have tho oughly
cooled.
Gla Care:
Cleaning: On occasion it will be necessa y to clean
the ca bon deposits and fly ash off of the glass. If the
ca bon and fly ash a e allowed to emain on the glass
fo an extended pe iod of time it could eventually cause
the glass to become etched and cloudy. Any c eosote,
which might deposit on the glass, will bu n off du ing
the next hot fi e.
The p ope cleaning p ocedu e is as follows:
1. Glass needs to be COMPLETELY COOL.
2. Only use a cleane that is specifically designed
fo this pu pose. The use of ab asives will damage
the glass and ultimately leave the glass f osted.
3. Rinse and d y glass completely, befo e bu ning
you stove.
Gla Removal: Always ope ate the doo s slowly
and cautiously to avoid c acking o b eaking the glass.
Neve use the doo to push wood into the fi ebox. If
the glass becomes c acked o b oken follow this
p ocedu e fo eplacement:
NEVER OPERATE THE STOVE WITH A
CRACKED OR BROKEN GLASS PANEL.
1. Remove the doo f om the stove and place on a
flat su face.
2. Ca efully emove all of the glass clips f om the
inside of the doo .
3. Gently emove all pieces of the glass panel and
gasketing.
4. Remove all emaining deb is f om the glass a ea
using a wi e b ush.
5. Apply a small bead of gasket/stove cement and
the new gasket. Do not ove lap the ends of the
gasket ope.
6. Cente the new glass panel ove the gasket and
einstall the glass clips. See figure 13
IMPORTANT: The side of the glass t eated with an
inf a ed coating (ma ked on the pe imete ) should
always be facing outwa d. It is ext emely impo -
tant to tighten the glass clips slowly and in a
epeating patte n, like tightening the lugs on an
automobile wheel.
7. It may be necessa y to etighten the glass clips
afte the stove has be bu ned and the gasketing
has been seated.
IMPORTANT:
REPLACE GLASS ONLY WITH A CERAMIC
GLASS PANEL SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED
FOR THE JØTUL OSLO F500. DO NOT USE
SUBSTITUTES. REPLACEMENT GLASS
PANELS CAN BE ORDERED THROUGH
YOUR JØTUL DEALER.

General Maintenance
Like you ca , egula maintenance p olongs the life
of you appliance. The following p ocedu es do not
take long and a e gene ally inexpensive, but when
done consistently, inc ease the life of you appliance
and in tu n, inc ease you yea s of enjoyment.
At least once a yea you should pe fo m the following
maintenance p ocedu es:
horoughly clean the stove. Enamel surfaces
should be cleaned with soap and water.
Empty stove of all soot and ashes. Only use a
vacuum fo this job if the vacuum is specifically
designed fo ashes.
Inspect the stove; using a st ong light inspect the
stove inside and out fo c acks o leaks. Replace
all c acked pa ts and epai any cement leaks
with fu nace cement.
Ga ket
Check doo and window gaskets fo tightness.
To check the seal of the f ont doo s, close and
latch the doo s on a dolla bill and slowly t y to
pull the dolla bill f ee. If it can be easily emoved
then the seal is too loose. Check seve al spots
a ound the doo , and epeat the p ocedu e on the
ash pan doo as well.
If gaskets need to be eplaced, sc ape out the old
gasket and cement and clean the a ea with a wi e
b ush. Apply a small bead of cement and push in
the new gasket. Afte closing and latching the
doo s wipe clean, any excessive cement that has
come f om beneath the gasketing.
GASKET LIST FOR THE OSLO F500
ACCESSORIES

with the Jøtul OSLO F500. ONLY USE
ACCESSORIES THAT ARE SPECIFICALLY
DESIGNED FOR THE JØTUL OSLO F500.
Fire creen (pa t # 129172)
The OSLO F500 has been app oved fo use as an
open fi eplace, with f ont doo open. This featu e is
especially nice when the ambience of a fi e is desi ed.
Some ca e should be taken when ope ating the stove
as a fi eplace.
·Always have the fi esc een in place, attached to
the stove f ont.
·Neve ove load the stove, fo the best appea ance
bu n in the t aditional th ee log configu ation.
·Reminde , when bu ning the stove with the sc een
in place, you a e sac ificing efficiency fo
aesthetics, and you will be consuming wood at a
much faste ate.
WARNING: OPERATE YOUR JØTUL OSLO
F500 WITH THE FRONT DOOR FULLY OPEN
AND THE FIRESCREEN IN PLACE OR FULLY
CLOSED. A PARTIALLY OPENED DOOR MAY
RESULT IN OVERFIRING. ALSO, IF THE
DOOR IS LEFT PARTLY OPEN, GAS AND
FLAME MAY BE DRAWN OUT OF THE STOVE
OPENING, CREATING RISKS FROM BOTH FIRE
AND SMOKE.

Guidelines to dete mine the need fo additional

situation. If in doubt, it is advisable to p ovide
additional ai .
The OSLO F500 is designed to bu n cleanly and
efficiently when used acco ding to the guidelines
exp essed in these ope ating inst uctions. Howeve ,
to maintain the p ope pe fo mance, a yea ly chimney
inspection and cleaning in necessa y. Failu e to keep
the chimney system f ee of c eosote and build up
could esult in a se ious chimney fi e.

Outside ai may be equi ed if:
1. The OSLO F500 does not d aw steadily,
smoke ollout occu s, fuel bu ns poo ly, o back-
d afts occu whethe o not the e is combustion
p esent.
2. Existing fuel-fi ed equipment in the house,
such as fi eplaces o othe heating appliances,
smell, do not ope ate p ope ly, suffe smoke oll-
out when opened, o back -d aft whethe o not
the e is combustion p esent.
3. Opening a window slightly on a calm (wind
less) day alleviates any of the above symptoms.
4. The house is equipped with a well-sealed
vapo ba ie and tight fitting windows and/o
has any powe ed devices that exhaust house ai .
5. The e is excessive condensation on the
windows in the winte .
6. A ventilation system is installed in the house.
If these o othe indications suggest that infilt ation
ai is inadequate, additional combustion ai should be
p ovided f om the outdoo s. Outside combustion ai
can be p ovided to the appliance by the following
means:
1. Di ect connection: the OSLO F500 has been
tested and listed fo use use with a outside ai kit
This outside ai kit is connected di ectly to the
stove, be su e to follow the inst uctions p ovided
with the kit.
2. Indi ect method: outside ai is ducted to a
point no close than (12) 300mm f om the
appliance, to avoid affecting the pe fo mance of
the appliance.
Floor Bracket Kit (pa t #750304)
Use of the Floo B acket Kit is equi ed in all mobile
home installations to secu e the stove to the floo .
Complete installation inst uctions and diag ams a e
supplied with each Floo B acket Kit.
Rear Heat hield (pa t #154332)
A stove ea heatshield has been specifically designed
fo the OSLO F500 to educe clea ances off the ea
of the stove to combustible mate ials. Use of the
heatshield DOES NOT affect the clea ance off the
sides of the appliance. See pages 11-12 fo specific
clea ance equi ements. Complete installation
inst uctions a e supplied with the heatshield.
NO OTHER TYPE OF HEATSHIELD MAY BE
USED ON THE REAR OF THE OSLO F500.
Bottom Heat hield (pa t #154330)
A bottom heatshield has been specifically designed
fo the OSLO F500. It is equi ed in all alcove
installations. Use of the bottom heat shield DOES
NOT affect the floo p otection equi ements disc ibed
on page 9 of this manual.
NO OTHER TYPE OF HEATSHIELD MAY BE
USED ON THE BOTTOM OF THE OSLO F500.

Stove-Top Thermometer (part # 5002)
Jøtul recommends the use of a magnetic stove-top
thermometer to monitor the surface temperature of
the stove. he optimum surface temperature range
for the most efficient, clean burn is between 400°
and 600°.
The Outside Ai Kit includes an adapte to mount
onto the stove that will except the f esh ai pipe.
Installation will require some additional materials:
a. the app op iate length of metallic pipe fo a
conduit of the outside ai (3 diamete ).
b. a ain/weathe esistant cap fo the outside of
the house.
c. a odent sc een- that is no la ge than 1/4
mesh
3. A mechanical ventilation system: if the house
has a ventilation system (ai change o heat
ecove y):
a. the ventilation system may be able to
p ovide sufficient combustion make-up ai fo
the solid -fuel fi ed appliance.
b.the homeowne should be info med that the
ventilation system might need to be ebalanced
by a ventilation technician afte installation of
the appliance.

ALTERNATE FLOOR PROTECTION
All floor protection materials must be non-combustible ie metal,
brick, stone, mineral fiber boards) Any combustible material
may not be used
The easiest means of determining if a proposed alternate floor
material meets requirements listed in this manual is to follow this
procedure
R-value = thermal resistance
k-value = thermal conductivity
C-value = thermal conductance
1 Convert the specification to R-value;
a If R-value is given, no conversion is
needed
b If k-value is given with a required
thickness (T) in inches: R=1/k X T
c If C-value is given: R=1/C
2 Determine the R-value of the proposed alternate
floor protector
a Use the formula in Step 1 to convert
values not expressed as R
b For multiple layers, add R-values of each
layer to determine overall R-value
3 If the overall R-value of the sustem is greater
than the R-value of the specified floor protector,
the alternate is acceptable
EXAMPLE:
The specified floor protector should be 3/4 thick material with a
k-factor of 0 84 The proposed alternate is 4 brick with a C-
factor of 1 25 over
