The FS-1300 Combination Fire/Smoke Leakage-rated
Life Safety Damper is designed to restrict the passage
of flame or smoke when in the closed position, under
dynamic or static conditions.
After installation, when power (electric or pneumatic) is
applied to the actuator, the damper blades will be
driven to the open position by the actuator.
When the primary temperature sensor detects heat, it
breaks power to the actuator, closing the damper
blades through the spring-return mechanism of the
actuator. The damper is now in the smoke protection
mode (damper closed via actuator).
If the air temperature reaches the fusible link
temperature (secondary temperature sensor), the link
separates. The damper linkage disengages from the
actuator, allowing the blades to close by a torsion
spring. The damper is now in fire protection mode
(damper closed via torsion spring).
FS-1300 Combination Fire/Smoke Dampers are
approved for mounting in fire walls constructed of
masonry or gypsum wallboard (metal or wood studs)
and in cement floors or ceilings.

FS-1300 dampers include an 18-gauge galvanized
steel sleeve, 24-inch-long, which is used for a 6 inch or
less fire barrier standard. Any barrier larger than
6 inches requires an optional 32-inch-long sleeve
length.
All dampers include an identification label providing the
following information:
•damper model and size
•manufacturing date code (year/week)
•top of damper
•air leaving side
An additional UL identification label provides the
following information:
•type, and hourly rating
•designation for use in dynamic systems
•maximum tested airflow and pressure difference
•electrical and/or pneumatic ratings
•degradation test temperature
•intended mounting position

Figures 3 and 4 show the typical mounting dimensions
for the FS-1300.
Note: The side angle by the actuator is factory
mounted for location of the damper within the
fire barrier. Do not remove this angle during
installation.

The opening in the fire barrier should be 1/8 inch per
foot, or 1/2 inch larger than the width and height
dimensions of the sleeve, to accommodate the heads
of the fasteners securing the sleeve to the damper.

nstallation
1. Check the schedules (furnished by others) for
correct damper location within the building.
2. The FS-1300 Combination Fire/Smoke Life Safety
Damper must be installed in accordance with
Standard NFPA-90A, at the point where a duct
passes through a required fire barrier. The blades,
when closed, shall be within the plane of the fire
barrier (wall or floor).
IMPORTANT Horizontal airflow only. The
damper must be installed in the
wall with the fusible link above
the centerline of the damper. See
labels on damper.
3. Verify that the fusible link is secure and was not
damaged or lost during shipment. If the fusible link
is missing, obtain a new link and follow installation
instructions provided with the link.

4. Mounting angles are required by building codes for
restricting the passage of flame through any gaps
created by the passage of the sleeve through the
fire barrier, and are provided with the FS-1300
Combination Fire/Smoke Leakage-rated Damper.
The mounting angles are precut to be installed so
that two sides extend past the other side (Figure 9
shows one corner), allowing no gaps to exist.
Attach the angles provided with the damper to the
sleeve, using the No. 10 self-tapping screws
provided.
5. Install the damper through the hole in the fire
barrier until mounting angles contact the fire
barrier.

fasten or weld the angles together
at the corners of the sleeve. Do
not secure the mounting angles to
the fire barrier.
6. While supporting the damper, install the mounting
angles to the sleeve on the other side of the fire
barrier, using the No. 10 self-tapping screws
provided.
Note: All sizes will have enough screws to be spaced
at 6-inch centers, starting within 3 inches from
the corners.

7. After installation, verify that the mounting angles
overlap the fire barrier by a minimum of 1 inch.
8. For proper damper operation, the frame must be
mounted square to prevent blade binding.
9. Visually inspect the damper to verify that the
fusible link is installed and was not damaged
during shipping.

10. Connecting ducts shall not be continuous and shall
terminate at the sleeve. The duct-to-damper sleeve
connection shall be of a breakaway style, such as
“S” or double “S” connectors. Use the plain “S” slip
when the duct or sleeve size is slightly different. Use
the double “S” slip when the sizes are equal.
11. The ducts connecting to the sleeves shall be equal
or less than the sleeve thickness. All FS-1300
sleeves are 18-gauge galvanized steel.

Actuators are mounted with linkage to drive the
jackshaft.

Make all wiring connections in actuator using copper
conductors and approved solderless connectors. Wire
in accordance with NEC and local regulations.
1. Remove the four screws securing the cover to the
actuator. Remove the cover.
2. Remove the knock-out from the side of the
actuator.
3. Attach the conduit connector though the hole and
install the wires to the actuator.
4. Connect the ground wire to the case ground
terminal, shown in Figure 12.

5. Wire the actuator as shown in Figure 13. Use
approved high-temperature connections.
To verify operation:
1. Verify voltage of actuator and power available
before applying power to the actuator.
2. After power is applied to the actuator, verify that
the damper blades are fully open.
3. Remove power and verify that the damper blades
fully close.
4. Apply power and allow the damper blades to
remain in the open position.
5. Replace and secure the cover to the actuator.

2. Copper tubing must be used and looped to allow
pivoting of the actuator.

supply before wiring the
switches and sensor to avoid
possible electrical shock or
damage to the equipment.
3. Make all wiring connections in handy box using
copper conductors and approved solderless
connectors. Wire in accordance with NEC and
local regulations.
To verify operation:
1. When the air supply is applied to the actuator,
verify that the damper blades are fully open.
2. Remove the air supply and verify that the damper
blades fully close.
3. Connect the air supply and allow the damper
blades to remain in the open position.
