according to the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive (2002/95/EC) and the Waste E ectrica and
E ectronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive (2002/96/EC) estab ished by the European Union. The RoHS directive was
adopted in February 2003 by the European Union and came into effect on Ju y 1, 2006. It is not a aw but a directive,
which restricts the use of six hazardous materia s in the manufacturing of various types of e ectronic and e ectrica
equipment. It is c ose y inked with the Waste E ectrica and E ectronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) 2002/96/EC,
which has set targets for co ection, recyc ing and recovery of e ectrica goods and is part of a egis ative initiative to
so ve the prob em of huge amounts of toxic e-waste.
Each European Union member state is adopting its own enforcement and imp ementation po icies using the directive
as a guide. Therefore, there cou d be as many different versions of the aw as there are states in the EU. Additiona y,
non-EU countries ike China, Japan, or states in the U.S. such as Ca ifornia may have their own regu ations for green
products, which are simi ar, but not identica , to the RoHS directive.
RoHS is often referred to as the " ead-free" directive but it restricts the use of the fo owing substances:

The maximum a owab e concentration of any of the above mentioned substances is 0.1% (except for Cadmium, which
is imited to 0.01%) by weight of homogeneous materia . This means that the imits do not app y to the weight of the
finished product, or even to a component but to any sing e substance that cou d (theoretica y) be separated
mechanica y.

1.8.1 RoHS Com atible Product Design
A standard products from Kontron Compact Computers (KCC) comp y with RoHS egis ation.
Since Ju y 1, 2006, there has been a strict adherence to the use of RoHS comp iant e ectronic and mechanica
components during the design-in phase of a KCC standard products.
1.8.2 RoHS Com liant Production Process
KCC se ects externa supp iers that are capab e of producing RoHS comp iant devices verified by:
»A confirmation from the supp ier indicating that their production processes and resu ting devices are RoHS
comp iant.
»If there is any doubt of the RoHS comp iancy, the concentration of the previous y mentioned substances in a
produced device wi be measured. These measurements are carried out by an accredited aboratory.
1.8.3 WEEE A lication
The WEEE directive is c ose y re ated to the RoHS directive and app ies to the fo owing devices:

2.2 Understanding MSM8C104EX Functionality
The MSM8C104ex MICROSPACE® PCI/104-Express expansion card has a choice of either 8 or 16 seria interfaces
avai ab e. Each channe can be sing y se ected as RS232C (+/-9V) or as RS422/485 each with 4 paired wires (TxD, RxD,
CTS, RTS).

The device combines a fu y integrated, sing e ane PCI express end point contro er and SerDes with eight high
performance Oxford Semiconductor 950 UARTs, user defined GPIOs/PWMs and a dedicated port expansion interface. It
inc udes advanced system management features such as MSI/MSI-X interrupt hand ing and Bus master DMA to
maximize data throughput whi e substantia y reducing CPU and system overheads. Each 950 UART has a fu modem
interface and inc udes hardware-acce erated out of band and in-band f ow contro , readab e FIFO eve s and RS485
turn around de ay for further performance optimization.

4Electrical Interfaces
For the 8-Channel UART with RS232 and RS422/485
4.1 RS232 Electrical Interface
This is the defau t setting for the se ectab e interface of the MSM8C104ex. To operate a port in RS232 mode, there are
no jumpers insta ed on the corresponding jumper b ock.
4.2 RS422/485 Electrical Interface
MSM8C104ex mode s offer three modes of RS422/485 communication, as out ined be ow.
4.2.1 Full Du lex Mode
TxD+/- is being driven to a known eve at a times in this mode. This mode is typica y used in point-to-point
situations much ike RS232. It is the defau t setting for RS422/485 mode.
4.2.2 Half Du lex Mode
In this mode, when data is transmitted, the TxD+/- ine driver is enab ed and RxD+/- is disab ed. This mode is typica y
used in either point-to-point 2-wire connections or in mu ti-drop 2-wire Bus connections. This mode requires
software setup.
DTR is used to contro the RS485 transmitter enab e signa .
4.2.3 Multi-dro Mode
In this mode, the TxD+/- ine driver is enab ed on y when data is transmitted and RxD+/- is enab ed a the time. This
mode is typica y used in mu ti-drop 4-wire connections. This mode requires software setup.
4.3 Line Bias/Termination
The RS422/485 transceivers can be configured to terminate and produce a ine eve mark condition on the receiver,
and/or terminate the transmitter. These options are enab ed through on-board jumper se ectab e resistors. These
options are typica y used in mu ti-drop 4-wire or ha f dup ex 2-wire connections.
