Introduction
1. Introducon
We would like to thank you for purchasing this high quality soldering staon. The Ersa i‑CON VARIO 2
is a mul‑funcon soldering staon for professional soldering and desoldering processes. It has been
designed for applicaons in industrial producon, repair operaons and laboratory environments.
1.1 Supply unit
Up to two soldering and desoldering tools (hereaer referred to as “soldering tool”) can be connected
to the supply unit and operated together. The connected soldering tools can be acvated by simply
pressing the i‑OP rotary encoder. Some of the soldering tools, such as e.g. the i‑TOOL, the X‑TOOL
VARIO, or the CHIP TOOL VARIO, are automacally acvated when they are taken from the holder.
The i‑CON VARIO 2 can be operated with a vast variety of dierent soldering tools. Besides the i‑TOOL
can also connect the CHIP TOOL and CHIP TOOL VARIO for desoldering very small SMT-components
and the desoldering tool X‑TOOL VARIO. Apart from an oponal vacuum connecon for desoldering
THT‑component, the staon is also equipped with a powerful air compressor for work with the
i-TOOL AIR S.
The possibility of being able to use the well established soldering tools, TECH TOOL and MICRO TOOL
and the connecvity for future soldering tools round o the high exibility of this staon. With its vast
variety of funcons, the high speed and regulang accuracy this soldering staon is most suitable for
use in manufacturing processed with high quality requirements.
The soldering staon comes with two serial interfaces and a USB‑port. The staon is also equipped
with ports for connecng to a PC, other control units, a soldering fume extractor or even a heang
plate. The use of a microSD‑card or the i‑SET TOOL oers the addional possibility to save the dierent
sengs of the staon. Furthermore, this way the saved data can not only be transferred back to the
soldering staon, but also to other i‑CON VARIO 4 staons.

Ersa products are developed, manufactured and tested in compliance with general requirements
concerning health and safety.
However, residual risk do remain!
You should therefore read this instrucon manual before you start to operate the device for the rst
me. It will help you to learn the funcons of the device and to use it in the most opmal way. Keep
this instrucon manual in a place that can be accessed by all users at any me!

Special informaon or mandatory instrucons and prohibions with the aim of
prevenng personal injury or extensive damage to property are idened by

3.2 Safety instrucons
DANGER! Malfuncons of the device possible!
Check all components before each use. Have damaged parts only repaired by a
specialist or the manufacturer. If repairs are carried out inappropriately, the operator
may become vicm of accidents. Always use original Ersa spare parts for possible
repairs.
ATTENTION! Risk of burning!
Thermal tools get very hot. Before heang up the device check whether the tool insert
(e.g. soldering p, modelling insert, etc.) is correctly connected with the thermal tool.
The hot tool insert should never come in contact with skin, hair or any heat‑sensive
and combusble materials. Make sure you use a suciently heat proof work base.
ATTENTION! Risk of burning by hot air!
The hot air jet should never come in contact with skin, hair or any heat‑sensive and
combusble materials. Take care that you do not direct the hot air jet towards persons
or yourself. Do not reach with your hands into the hot air jet. Use a suciently heat
resistant work base and remove all combusble materials from your work environment.
CAUTION! Risk of injury!
Keep unauthorized persons at a safe distance. Make sure that unauthorized persons,
especially children, have no access to the thermal tools.
WARNING! Fire hazard!
Before heang up the thermal tool remove any combusble objects, uids and gases
from the working range of the thermal tool. Always place the thermal tool into the
holder provided for this purpose. Disconnect the thermal tool from the mains supply
aer use.
WARNING! Fire hazard!
Do not leave your hot thermal tool unaended. Remember that it will take quite some
me for the tool insert to cool down to a harmless temperature, aer the device has
been switched o.
CAUTION! Risk of injury!
Keep your working area clean and dy. A messy working area increases the risk of
accidents.
CAUTION! Eang and drinking prohibited!
Solders and solder auxiliaries are toxic. If they enter into the organism it will have a
toxic eect. Eang, drinking and smoking is strictly prohibited. Always wash your hands
thoroughly aer having worked with solder and solder auxiliaries.

Concerning your safety
CAUTION! Danger of poisoning by inhalaon!
Harmful fumes are produced during soldering. Ensure sucient venlaon or
extracon. Follow the relevant safety data sheets of the used solder paste and ux.
WARNING! Dangerous electrical voltage!
Protect the supply cables. Do not use the power supply cable to pull out the plug or to
carry the device. Keep power supply cables clear of heat, oil or sharp edges. Damaged
power supply cables may cause re, short circuit or electric shock and must therefore
be replaced.
WARNING! Fire hazard and dangerous electrical voltage!
Consider environmental inuences. Protect your device against any type of uid and
moisture. Otherwise there is a danger of re or electric shock.
CAUTION! Risk of injury!
Take care of your thermal tool. Always keep your Ersa product in a safe and dry place,
out of the reach of children. Follow the maintenance instrucons. Check your device in
regular intervals. Use only original accessories and spare parts from Ersa.
CAUTION! Risk of injury!
Physically and/or mentally disabled persons must only use the soldering staon under
the supervision of trained specialists! Children are not allowed to play with the solder-
ing devices.
This tool can be used by children aged 8 and over, as well as by people with reduced
physical, sensory or mental capabilies or lack of experience and knowledge, when
under supervision and instructed on the safe use of the tool and if they understand all
related risks.
Children are not allowed to play with the soldering devices. Cleaning or maintenance
must not be carried out by children without supervision.
CAUTION! Wear protecve clothing!
Wear suitable protecve clothing during all operaons with the soldering staon (pro-
tecve glasses and gloves, etc.)!
CAUTION! Safe disposal of solder waste!
Solder waste is hazardous waste and must not be disposed with the normal household
waste. Provide safe and environmentally friendly disposal of operang materials, auxil-
iaries and replacement parts. Observe the municipal waste disposal regulaons.
ESD‑sensive components!
Electronic components can be damaged by electrostac discharge. Note the warnings
on the packing or ask the manufacturer or supplier. To protect these components use
an ESD‑save workplace (ESD = electrostac discharge).

3.3 Intended use
Thermal tools from Ersa must only be used for the processing of so solder. However, if explicitly
described in the operang instrucons of the respecve thermal tool, some thermal tools may, in
exceponal cases, be used for the processing of plasc materials. In case of unintended use and
tampering with the device, any warranty and liability claims of the buyer against the manufacturer will
become null and void. Intended use also includes observing the operang instrucons including the
safety instrucons.
3.4 Naonal and internaonal regulaons
Naonal and internaonal health and safety regulaons as well as occupaonal health and accident
prevenon regulaons must be complied with.

4.1 Transport and storage
The i-CON VARIO 2 is delivered in a strong cardboard box. Please use only the original packaging for
transportaon and intermediate storage. Strictly avoid jerky movements, impacts or pung down of
the i‑CON VARIO 2. The i‑CON VARIO 2 must be adequately protected against weather inuences like
rain, fog or sea air, etc. For longer storage in high humidity environments the i‑CON VARIO 2 must be
packed up air ght, together with a dehumidifying agent. Damage caused by unprofessional transport
or storage are not covered under warranty.
4.2 Waste disposal
Notes on waste disposal acc. to the direcve 2002/96/EC of the European Parliament
and the Commiee from 27th of January 2003 for used electric and electronic
appliances:
Products marked with a crossed out waste bin must not be disposed of together with
unsorted domesc waste. The municipalies established special collecng points for
this type of waste.
Please consult your council and ask for available possibilies for the separated
collecon of old appliances.
You thereby contribute to the reuse or other forms of use of old appliances, with the
aim of protecng the environment and human health.

5.3 Switching on the rst me
For safe and durable operaon of the soldering tools you must strictly observe the following items:
■Before switching on, make sure that the mains voltage complies with
the value specied on the type plate.
■Switch o the soldering staon by the mains switch.
■Check the correct t of the soldering p.
■Connect the soldering tool with the staon ❶ (example illustraon)
and store it in the holder.
• Tool socket A1: electrical power supply, 150 W maximum
• Tool socket VAC: Vacuum supply (only with models with desoldering iron or with
vacuum pump)
• Tool socket A2: electrical power supply, 200 W maximum
(the socket assignment depends on the variant)
• Tool socket Air: Air supply
The table below contains informaon of which tools can be operated on which tool
sockets. Tools requiring vacuum supply must be connected parallel to the tool sockets
A1 and Vac (with i-CON VARIO 2X also A2 and VAC). Tools requiring air supply must be
connected parallel to the tool sockets A2 and Air.

Functional description
6. Funconal descripon
6.1 Operaon
The soldering staon is switched on/o by the switch on the front ①.
The soldering staon is controlled via a rotary encoder ② with push‑buon funcon (press). It is
called i‑OP. The i‑OP allows the selecon of desired funcons or the change of values. Clockwise
turning results in higher values and counter‑clockwise turning in lower values. Slow turning eects
change in increments of one. Quick turning changes the selected values in increments of 10/50/100
(depending on the corresponding parameter).
The i‑OP has an addional push‑buon funcon. Via this push‑buon funcon (pushing), the selected
parameters and values are conrmed and become eecve for the staon. In addion, this push‑
buon funcon enables you to acvate the connected tools alternately. All seng steps and measured
values are displayed in plain text in a clearly structured display window, which is simply referred to as
“Display”.
6.2 The work mode
Aer the staon has been switched on, the switch‑on dialog is
displayed for approx. 2 seconds. It displays the name of the staon ①
and the soware version ②of the i-CON VARIO 2.
Aer this the staon automacally changes to working mode:
The names and values of the soldering tool currently pre-selected
(acve) for operaon, are represented by means of bigger characters ③
The names and values of the soldering tool in the background (passive),
are represented by means of smaller characters ④with the parameters:
• Actual value of the acve soldering tool ⑤.
• Actual value of the passive soldering tool ⑥.
• Nominal value of the acve soldering tool ⑦.
• The actual value is inside the temperature window ⑧, see also
chapter 6.4.1 [Temperature window].
• Password protecon is acve (KEY‑symbol) ⑨.

Functional description
6.2.1 microSD‑card
The use of a microSD card allows to make rmware updates. For more informaon on using the mi-
croSD card, please refer to the rmware update instrucons. The rmware and the update instrucons
can be found at www.kurtzersa.com in secon "i‑CON VARIO 2" under "Downloads".
6.2.1.1 Insert microSD‑card
The staon provides a port for a microSD‑card.
■Insert the microSD-card into the port like shown on
the right.
■You should recognize a slight resistance aer inserng
half the card. This is a sign that the card is inserted
correctly.
■If there is no tangible resistance take the card out
completely and try again.
■A rmware update is started automacally as soon
as the card is inserted correctly. For carrying out any
other applicaon follow the menu navigaon.
■The rmware and the update instrucons can be
found at www.kurtzersa.com in secon “i‑CON VARIO
2” under “Downloads”.
6.2.2 Soware version
These operang instrucons refer to the soware version 1.3X. For service purposes the number of
the soware may be of help, you should therefore make a note of it and keep it ready, as you may
need it when asked by our Service Department. The soware version can be accessed via the menu
[Contrast]. Please read the chapter 6.6 [Contrast] for more informaon!
6.2.3 Acvang tools
If there are two tools connected to the soldering staon, you can acvate these alternately by pressing
the i-OP.
A connected i‑TOOL, X‑TOOL VARIO, or CHIP TOOL VARIO is always automacally acvated as soon as it
is taken out of the holder.
In the working mode, the soldering p temperature of the acve soldering tool can be directly
changed by turning the i‑OP. This is conrmed by pressing the i‑OP.
With the password protecon acvated, the nominal value can only be changed via the
parameter mode. The password is needed for this.
For all soldering tools not specially menoned in these instrucons, you should consult
the operang instrucons for the corresponding tool.

Functional description
6.2.4 Working with the i‑TOOL AIR S
The i‑CON VARIO 2 is equipped with an air supply, to be able to connect the hot‑air
soldering tool i‑TOOL AIR S. In contrast to regular soldering tools, this tool transfers the
required energy for soldering by means of hot air convecon.
■Connect the i‑TOOL AIR S to the sockets A2 and Air of the staon.
Switch the staon on. If more than one tool is connected to the
staon, you just acvate the i‑TOOL AIR S by pressing the i‑OP.
■You can now set the desired temperature by turning the i-OP ① and
conrm this seng by pressing.
Adjusng the air ow:
■In order to adjust the air quanty turn the potenometer ②on the
handle of the i-TOOL AIR S.
Turning clockwise increases the air quanty ③, while turning an‑
clockwise reduces the air quanty.
The air quanty can be gradually adjusted from 2 to 20 l/min. The reading ③in the
display represents the air quantity.
Switching on and o:
■Take the soldering iron out of the holder and cover the opcal sensor
④ twice. The ashing icon at posion ⑥indicates the required
pace. The i-TOOL AIR S is switched on and heats up to the adjusted
temperature.
This switching on is conrmed by two short audible signals. Apart from this, the display
⑤shows the increasing temperature.
■Switching the tool o works in the same way as switching it on.
This switching o is indicated by a long audible signal. Apart from this, the display
changes between “OFF” ⑦ and the sll exisng iron temperature.
The air ow of the iron is automacally switched o when the tool has cooled down to
a temperature of 200 °C.
From VARIO rmware V.1.20 and i‑TOOL AIR S V.1.04 you can adjust the sensivity of
the opcal sensor in menu [Parameter], value [Opto Sensor].
Default = [Med].
[Low] = less sensive, [High] = more sensive.

Functional description
Tips for operaon and sengs:
It is recommended to maintain a sucient distance between the soldering good and
the soldering tool while working with the i-TOOL AIR S. It is depending on the used air
quanty and temperature and should be about 1 – 5 mm.
