Warranty Information
This LeapFrog product is warranted only to the original purchaser for a period of 3 months
from the original purchase date, under normal use and service, against defective workmanship
and material. This warranty is void if the product has been damaged by accident or unreasonable
use, immersion in water, neglect, abuse, battery leakage or improper installation, improper service,
or other causes not arising out of defects in workmanship or materials. Repair or replacement
as provided under this warranty is the exclusive remedy of the purchaser. LeapFrog shall not
be liable for any incidental or consequential damages for breach of any express warranty on
this product. Any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose on
this product is limited to the duration of this warranty. Some states do not allow the exclusion
or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, or limitation on how long an implied
warranty lasts, so the above limitations or exclusions may not apply to you. This warranty
gives you specific legal rights and you may also have other rights, which vary from state to state.
During the warranty period, your product will either be repaired or replaced at LeapFrog’s
option, when returned, shipping prepaid and with proof of purchase date as instructed by a
LeapFrog service representative. In the event that your product is replaced, the replacement
product will be covered under the original warranty or for 30 days, whichever is longer.
Canada: In addition to the above-referenced warranty, the hardware component shall be
free from defects in material and workmanship for 12 months. The above express warranty
and any applicable implied warranties are limited in duration to the warranty periods described

Welcome to a Personalized
Approach to Learning
Welcome to a learning experience that is just as unique as your child!
Your preschooler can join Leap on learning adventures through songs,
stories and games that you personalize by telling Leap all about your
child. You can also customize your child’s learning lessons by telling
Leap what you child does or doesn’t know. Leap will match the lessons to what your child
still needs to learn! By personalizing and customizing Leap, you are giving your child a highly
engaging learning experience that is easy to connect with, because your child is directly involved
in the action!
Learning At All Levels: An Interactive Approach
Children learn by doing! That’s why Leap's interactive nature is so important. There are three
fun ways to learn:
Stories with Open-Ended Conclusions
Each of Leap's stories features a changing story line that allows your child to help determine
the outcome. Your child will decide how each story will end by squeezing one of Leap's hands.
What should Leap do?
Your child gets to choose what happens and discover the consequences of his or her decision.
Gradually, with the help of Leap, your child will learn how to deal with different situations.
Sing-Along Songs
Your child will delight in singing along with Leap. There are 7 songs to get children moving
and grooving–and which reinforce learning lessons. Through repetition, children learn lessons
about sharing, saying “I’m sorry,” parts of the body, and the names of letters and the sounds
they make.
Hands-On Learning Games
Games range from counting along with Leap by squeezing his hand to identifying letters.
Letter games advance through four levels of diffi culty, based on your child’s knowledge
(as set during personalization). As your child answers correctly, he will advance to the
next level of diffi culty.

How to play with
MY OWN LEARNING LEAP™
Interactive Friend
Step 1: Personalize Leap.
The fi rst time you play with Leap, take a few moments to personalize the toy
with your child’s information. See the next section (page 4) of the Parent Guide
for more information.
Step 2: Press the On/Off Button on Leap’s Foot.
Leap will wake up, ready to play!
Step 3: Hear Fun, Personalized Messages.
Squeeze Leap’s hands. He always has something to say! Phrases include special
messages you’ve recorded for your child.
Step 4: Listen to a Story “All About Me.”
Press the star to hear a story that is all about your child.
Step 5: Build a Story with Leap.
Press the circle to play an interactive, personalized story.
Step 6: Sing a Song.
Press the square to sing along with Leap.
Step 7: Play a Game.
Press the triangle to play games about colors/colours, counting and letters.
Step 8: Learn Letter Names and Sounds.
Press any letter to hear its name and the sound it makes. If your
child presses the fi rst letter in his name, he’ll hear a surprise!
Volume Control:
Volume control is located on the battery box. Select “Low” or “High” with the
switch. Selecting “Off” will completely turn Leap off.
On/Off and Automatic Shut Off:
The On/Off button is located on Leap’s foot. When you are done playing with
Leap, press the On/Off button. Otherwise, the product will turn off automatically
if it hasn’t been used for 2 minutes. Selecting “Off” on the battery box will disable
the toy, so that it cannot be activated using the On/Off button on the foot.

Interactive Friend
By answering 15 questions, you’ll create fun, personalized stories, songs and
games for your child! This is a one-time process, and takes about 10 minutes.
Some questions will ask you to push a button, and others will ask you to
record a word or phrase into the Make-a-Message Recorder. You can return
at any time to update your information.

Step 1: Install 4 AA batteries into the battery box located in Leap's back.
Step 2: Press the On/Off button on Leap’s foot.
Step 3: Using the Make-a-Message Recorder, answer questions to customize your
child’s learning experience! After you’ve answered the fi rst four questions, you can
press the forward and back buttons on the recorder to “fast forward” or “rewind”
to any question.
Step 4: How to store the Make-a-Message Recorder. After you’re done
recording for the fi rst time, you can conveniently store the Make-a-Message
Recorder in Leap’s back. Place the Recorder, with buttons facing inside, into the
cradle in Leap’s back. Be sure to place the cord attached to the Recorder into
the recessed area in the cradle. Next, insert the bottom of the Recorder into the
cradle and push the top until it snaps into place. Move the horizontal locking slider
to the left to secure the Recorder into place. Leap cannot play if the Recorder is
not secured in this position.
Step 5: Press the On/Off button on Leap’s foot to begin playing!
Leap will remember the personalized information and play it back in stories, songs
and games.
Recording additional messages with the Make-a-Message Recorder.
Move the horizontal locking slider to the right to unlock the Recorder from its
cradle. Move and hold the vertical slider upward, and pull the Recorder from its
cradle. Return to step 2 to continue.
If you purchase additional personalized learning kits for Leap, simply insert the new
cartridge into the slot in Leap’s back and follow Leap’s directions to personalize.
Leap will retain all of the information from your initial set-up, in addition to the new
information added.

Learning About
Friendship and Sharing
Friendship and Empathy:
Friends become increasingly important as your child
grows. Whether encounters with other children are on
the playground, at preschool, or in grandma’s living room,
you are likely to observe confl icting behaviors as your child begins to develop
a social identity. Friends can be rivals for toys or allies in the pleasure of playing
with them. Children gradually learn to play together in pairs or groups as they
begin to understand the needs of others.
One important skill that begins to emerge in 2-year-olds is empathy for others.
It may begin by comforting an injured stuffed animal, or taking note of another
child’s tears or laughter. A young child’s ability to interpret the feelings of others
is key to making friends. Before they can recognize feelings in others, however,
young children must be able to identify feelings of their own.
Tips for helping 2-year-olds build empathy:
• Encourage your child to think about feelings and ideas, not just physical actions.
When you see a picture of a pet, for example, extend the discussion from the
statement, “That’s a cat!” to include how it might feel to play with the cat, using
words like happy and sad to express emotional ideas.
• Let your child know that you are listening to, understanding, and respecting
his or her needs. Praise your child for acts of kindness, such as hugging a
crying playmate. Let your child know that empathetic actions are appreciated.
Sharing:
One of the hardest skills for 3-year-olds to learn is sharing with others. Part of the
diffi culty is that young children can’t yet make the distinction between sharing and
giving something away. As a result, parting with a much-loved toy can be very diffi cult!

Tips for helping 3-year-olds learn to share:
• Point out the value of sharing and how your child enjoys playing with a friend’s toys.
• Reassure your child that his or her toys are still his or hers, even though another
child plays with them.
• Allow your child to put away special toys that she or he does not wish to share.
• At playtime, try to have toys that have multiple parts or games that provide the
most fun when played with a friend.
Learning Self-Control:
Best friends can change daily for 3-year-olds. Your child might be rejected by another
child for no reason other than that the other child is in a bad mood. Other times,
rejection can stem from a child’s own actions and how they affect other children.
It is crucial to the process of making—and keeping—friends that your child learn
about self-control and cooperative play.
Tips for helping 3-year-olds learn self-control:
• Work with your child to make the connection between negative actions and
a negative response. Point out that if he or she pushes another child that child
won’t want to play with him or her.
• Help your child learn to verbalize feelings, including learning to apologize for
bad actions. Children are quick to forgive and your child will likely be invited
to play once again.

Learning About Letter
Names and Sounds
Letter Names:
Learning to recognize and write the letters of the alphabet is
an important fi rst step on the road to reading success. The activities in MY OWN
LEARNING LEAP™ Interactive Friend will give your child practice in examining
the shapes of the letters A to Z, while matching the capital form of each letter to
its letter name and sound.
Being able to recite the alphabet is not the same as “knowing” the letters. Can your
child identify each letter by name and sound? Can he or she distinguish between
“look-alike” letters, such as E and F; M and N; U and V?
There are lots of activities you can do to build upon the letter recognition skills
your child is practicing, and help ensure your child’s reading and writing progress.
Tips for helping your child recognize and write the
alphabet letters:
• Write the letters of the alphabet on index cards, one letter per card. Place the
cards in order from A to Z along a path inside or outside your home. As you
walk along the path with your child, take turns naming each alphabet letter you
see.
• Vary this activity to play ABC Hunt. Hide the letters in random order around
your house. Then, have your child hunt for and collect the cards in ABC order.
Ask your child to name each card as he or she collects it.
• Point out letters in newspapers, billboards and road signs. You can play games
spotting letters as you ride in the car together.
• Be sure to read plenty of alphabet books with your child, and point out the
different letters that you see each day.

Letter Sounds:
Understanding that a word is made up of individual sounds and discriminating
among those sounds is called phonemic awareness. It takes practice to hear the
“b-b-b” in the words bat and ball, or to hear that pig and jig rhyme because they
have the same ending sound. The fi rst step is for children to connect the sound
a letter makes to the printed letter.
Tips for helping your child make the letter/sound connection:
• Write the letters of the alphabet on index cards, one letter per card. Using six
cards at a time, scatter the cards randomly on the fl oor. Say a letter sound, such
as “buh,” and have your child fi nd the letter card that stands for that sound.
• Play “A Letter a Day.” Place a magnetic letter on your refrigerator, or write a
letter on a piece of paper and post it in a prominent place. Then, on C day, for
example, fi nd as many objects as you can that start with C. Say the sound of C
as you identify each one.
• Make a letter book. Together with your child, thumb through old magazines
to fi nd pictures of things that begin with each letter of the alphabet. For each
letter, cut out a picture and glue it onto a sheet of paper. Write the name of
the picture underneath and put the beginning letter in a special color. Staple
the pages together in ABC order to make a book your child can read. Ask
your child to pronounce the beginning sound of each word and then read
the word as a whole.
Tips for helping your child to blend and isolate sounds in
words, or play with rhyming words:
• Say a series of words that begin with the same sound, for example, mommy,
milk, magic. Ask your child to add another word to the list that begins with
the same sound.
• Read a familiar nursery rhyme or rhyming picture book. As you read, leave
out a rhyming word along the way and pause to allow your child to complete
the verse.
• Slowly say the sounds in a word, so your child can hear each one: bbbaaattt.
Once your child identifi es the word, have him pantomime the action of the
word. Use this word bank of easy-to-identify action words: cut, comb, fi sh, fan,
hop, mop, pull, run, tap.

Learning About Counting
and Colors/Colours
Counting and Numbers:
The fi rst step in your child’s understanding that numerals
stand for specifi c amounts of things is to count out concrete objects. Let your
child count everyday items, like cracks in the sidewalk, the number of napkins on
the table, or cookies in the cookie jar. Together, count collections of things around
the house, such as beds, windows and doors.
Tips for helping your child learn to count:
• Sing counting songs together, such as This Old Man or One, Two, Buckle My
Shoe. Have your child make two fi sts and unfold a fi nger for each item that is
counted in a song.
• Preschoolers enjoy setting a table; count out the number of each utensil as you
place it on the table.
• Have your child help you count and sort different items as you place them in the
washing machine.
Colors/Colours:
Youngsters are able to express themselves through music, movement, and art if they
are given the opportunity. Children begin to explore language as they describe the
symbols in their artwork. They also practice math skills as they count out crayons,
or match the number of paintbrushes to jars of paint.
Tips for helping your child learn about colors/colours and
develop creativity:
• Encourage your child to explore with different colors/colours of crayons, paints, and
craft dough.
• Provide blank paper, rather than a coloring/colouring book, to encourage creativity.
• Display your child’s artwork in a prominent place where family members can see it.

• Install new batteries.
• If using cartridge, check to see if cartridge is inserted properly.
• Check volume switch on battery box. Set it to “High” if it is on “Low.”
• Install new batteries.
• Use the Make-a-Message Recorder to redo the appropriate
personalization questions.
• Make sure the Make-a-Message Recorder is in place.
It must be latched securely into the battery box.
• If a cartridge is plugged in, the toy will personalize the cartridge.
To personalize basic information, remove the cartridge.
• Install new batteries.
• Clean battery contacts with rubbing alcohol.
Important: MY OWN LEARNING LEAP™ Interactive Friend cannot play if the Make-a-Message
Recorder is not latched securely in Leap’s back. See page 5, step 4 for instructions on properly
storing the Recorder.
Care and Maintenance:
• Keep product away from food and beverages. • Never use in water or submerge toy in water.
• To clean, use a slightly damp cloth • Remove batteries for prolonged storage.
(cold water). Air dry only. • Avoid exposing the product to extreme temps.
