SPECIAL USE INST UCTIONS
1. An adequate respiratory prote tion program must
in lude knowledge of hazards, hazard assessment,
sele tion of proper respiratory prote tive equipment,
instru tion and training in the use of equipment,
inspe tion and maintenan e of equipment, and med-
i al surveillan e. [See OSHA regulations, Title 29 CFR,
Part 1910. 134]
2. This respirator will perform as designed only if used
and maintained a ording to the manufa turer’s
instru tions. The Program Administrator and the users
must read and understand these instru tions before
trying to use or servi e this produ t. We en ourage
our ustomers to write or all for information on this
produ t before using it.
3. This respirator may be used only after proper instru -
tion and training in its use as spe ified in OSHA regu-
lations [Title 29 CFR, Part 1910. 134].
4. This respirator may be worn for es ape only from
atmospheres whi h are immediately dangerous to life
or health as defined in Title 42 CFR, Part 84, or from
whi h the wearer annot es ape without the aid of a
respirator. Under no ir umstan es should the respira-
tor be used as an underwater devi e.
5. Approved for use at temperatures above 0°F.
6. To maintain NIOSH approval, the air used in the ylin-
der must meet the requirements of the Compressed
Gas Asso iation Spe ifi ation G-7.1 for quality verifi-
ation level (grade) D air or equivalent spe ifi ations.
The ylinder shall meet appli able DOT spe ifi ations.
7. Wear impermeable prote tive lothing for exposure to
gases or vapors whi h an poison by skin absorption.
8. Do not alter, modify, or substitute any omponents
without the approval of the manufa turer. Alterations
will void the NIOSH approval.
9. Inspe t the respirator regularly and maintain it a ord-
ing to the manufa turer’s instru tions. Repairs must
only be made by properly trained personnel.
GENE AL DESC IPTION
Two respirators are des ribed in this manual:
TransAire 5 Minute Es ape Hood Respirator
TransAire 10 Minute Es ape Hood Respirator
Both respirators from MSA are approved by the National
Institute for O upational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for
use as an es ape devi e from hazardous atmospheres,
in luding those whi h are immediately dangerous to life or
health (IDLH). An IDLH atmosphere is defined as:
“ ... onditions that pose an immediate threat
to life or health or onditions that pose an
immediate threat of severe exposure to onta-
minants, su h as radioa tive materials, whi h
are likely to have adverse umulative or
delayed effe ts on health.” [Title 42 CFR, Part
84, Subpart A, par. 84.2 (q)].”
TransAire Es ape apparatus onsist of a arrier ontaining
a loose-fitting hood, a flow- ontrol regulator and hose
assembly, and an air ylinder and valve assembly. The
TransAire 5 Minute Es ape Hood Respirator air ylinder
ontains a 5-minute supply of air at FULL pressure (2216
psig). The TransAire 10 Minute Es ape Hood Respirator
air ylinder ontains a 10-minute supply of air at FULL
pressure (3000 psig).
There are significant differen es between ESCAPE appa-
ratus (like the TransAire) and self- ontained breathing
apparatus (SCBA).

Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
The apparatus an be worn on the hest, hip or waist, and
may be arried into or stored in an area that may be poten-
tially hazardous. The hood is designed to be a reservoir of
breathing air. It is not designed to provide splash prote tion

Ambos los respiradores de MSA son aprobados por el
National Institute for O upational Safety and Health
(NIOSH) para usar omo un aparato para es aparse de

UNPACKING
When you re eive the apparatus, inspe t it to be sure it has
not been damaged in shipment. In may ases, you will not
be the first to handle the apparatus. So, he k that it is
assembled orre tly. Che k the air ylinder to be sure it is
FULL. The pressure gauge should read 3000 psi at 70°F for
the 10-minute unit and 2216 for the 5-minute unit.
DONNING THE T ANSAI E ESCAPE HOOD
Note
The ylinder may be worn three ways: Chest-mounted,
hip-mounted, or waist-mounted.
To Don the Cylinder and Carrier
1. Chest-Mounted:
a. Che k that the strap hook is atta hed to the bot-
tom D-ring.
b. Adjust the arrier strap to fit omfortably over your
head.
. Slip the strap over your head so that it rests on the
ba k of your ne k.
2. Hip-Mounted:
a. Adjust the arrier strap so that it is fully extended.
b. Atta h the strap hook to the D-ring.
. Slip one arm into the strap. Pla e the strap over
your head and rest it on your shoulder.
3. Waist-Mounted (using the optional shoulder strap):
a. Atta h the shoulder strap to the top D-rings.
b. Remove the arrier strap from the D-ring and
adjust the strap to its full length.
. Don the shoulder strap. Pull the adjusting strap for
a snug, omfortable fit.
d. Atta h the arrier strap hook to the D-ring and
adjust the strap to your waist size.

Comparación: El TransAire Aparato para Escaparse contra un

To Don the Apparatus Hood:
1. Open the ylinder valve all the way (11/2full turns
ounter lo kwise).
2. Pull the hook-and-loop strip and pull the pou h over
out away from the arrier. Grasp the hood from the
pou h and listen for the sound of air rushing inside the
hood.
3. Stret h the ne k band with both hands and pull the
hood over your head so that the regulator hose is at
the front.
Note
For the drawstring hood, pull the elasti drawstring down
from your ne k. Grasp the ord lo k and slide it up to
tighten the hood around your ne k. Release the draw-
string. Adjust the fit around your ne k to obtain a seal and
adjust for omfort.
4. Make sure there is nothing (su h as lothing or hair)
between the ne k band and your ne k to prevent a
good seal.
5. Exit to a safe atmosphere — Immediately!
This apparatus is designed to supply air for no more
than 5 or 10 minutes. Do not remain in the hazardous
atmosphere. Leave immediately and return to a safe
atmosphere. emove the hood when air flow stops.
The rushing sound will stop, and the hood will begin to
collapse around your head. Failure to follow this pre-
caution may result in serious personal injury or death
by suffocation.
EMOVING THE T ANSAI E ESCAPE HOOD
To emove the Hood:
1. Stret h the ne k band with both hands and pull the
hood up over your head.
2. Close the ylinder valve.
3. Remove the shoulder strap (and waist strap if used).

MAINTAINING THE ESCAPE HOOD
OSHA regulations (29CFR, Part 1910.134) require that the
user establish a maintenan e program. This program must
in lude leaning and disinfe ting, omponent inspe tion,
and repla ement of worn or damaged parts. See the parts
list for orre t repla ement part numbers.
Cleaning and Disinfecting
Depending on the leaning poli y adopted, either a desig-
nated person or the user should lean the apparatus.
ANSI suggests that users should be trained in the lean-
ing pro edure. Prepare the apparatus for leaning and
sanitizing as follows:
Inspect the apparatus after it has been cleaned and
disinfected. Be careful that you do not breathe or
touch the contaminant in handling the apparatus or its
parts. Use equipment designed to protect you from
the specific contaminant. Failure to follow this precau-
tion may result in exposure to the contaminant, and
cause serious personal injury or death.
1. Make sure that the ylinder valve is fully losed.
2. Remove ex ess ontaminant from the apparatus.
3. Uns rew the hose nut and pull the hose fitting out of
the hood inlet.
4. Remove the muffler from the hood.
5. Uns rew and remove the pressure regulator from the
ylinder valve.
6. Untie the retaining ord to open the ylinder arrier
and remove the air ylinder.
7. Add one pa kage of Cleaner Disinfe tant Liquid or a
mild leaning solution to a gallon of warm water (max-
imum temperature 120°F).
8. Submerge the hood and arrier in the leaning solu-
tion and s rub gently until they are lean.
9. Rinse both hood and arrier thoroughly in plain, warm
water (maximum temperature 120°F), then air dry. If
not rinsed thoroughly, Cleaner Disinfe tant Liquid may
irritate your skin.
Do not force-dry with heat. Temperatures above 120°F
may distort or damage parts of this apparatus. The
hood is plastic and may be scratched if rubbed with
coarse dry cloth or paper towels.
10. Use a damp loth or sponge saturated in Cleaner
Disinfe tant Liquid to lean the muffler, muffler over,
diffuser, hood hose, pressure regulator, ylinder valve
and air ylinder lean.
11. When they have dried, reinstall the muffler, diffuser,
and muffler over in the hood. Ensure that the muffler
over is installed and pointed up at approximately 45
degrees left or right of enter.
Maintaining the Es ape Hood

Para Quitarse la Capucha:
1. Estire la tira del uello on las dos manos y levante la
apu ha de la abeza.
2. Cierre la válvula del ilindro.
3. Quítese la hombrera (y la de la intura si usado).
COMO MANTENE LA CAPUCHA DE ESCAPA SE
Las normas de OSHA (29CFR, Parte 1910.134) requieren
que el usario establez a un programa de mantenimiento.
Este programa tiene que in luir la limpieza y desinfe tan-
do, la inspe ión del omponente, y la devolu ión de las
partes gastadas o dañas. Vea la lista de partes para
números orre tos de partes de sustitu ión.
Limpiar y Desinfectar
Depende del sistema que a epta, una persona designada
o el usario debe limpiar el aparato. ANSI a onseja que los
usarios se deben entrenar en el pro edimiento de
limpieza. Prepare el aparato para limpiar y desinfe tar
omo el siguiente:
Examine el aparato después de limpiarlo y desinfec-
tarlo. Cuidado ni tocar ni respirar el contaminante
cuando maneja el aparato o las partes. Use el equipo
diseñado para protegerse del contaminante específi-
co. No seguir esta precaución puede resultar en la
exposición al contaminante, y causar en serio daño
personal o la muerte.
1. Asegúrese que la válvula del ilindro esté errada
ompletamente.
2. Quite el ontaminante ex eso del aparato.
3. Desatornille la tuer a de la manga y jale el mobilario
de la manga fuera de la entrada de la apu ha.
4. Quite el mofle de la apu ha.
5. Desatornille y quite el regulador de presión de la
válvula del ilindro.
6. Desate el ordón de onten ión para abrir el portador
del ilindro y quite el ilindro de aire.

Component Inspection (After Cleaning and
Disinfecting)
1. Inspe t the Hood
a. Look for tears, holes, uts, and abrasions.
b. Che k the hood to be sure you an see learly
through it.
. Che k the elasti ne k band for breaks. Stret h
and release it. The ne k band must spring ba k
easily.
d. Che k the hood inlet:
•Che k that no parts are broken or missing.
•The over must be inta t and the diffuser and
muffler must be in pla e.
Do not use the apparatus if any parts are damaged or
missing. The apparatus is used to sustain life in haz-
ardous atmospheres. Failure to follow this precaution
may result in serious personal injury or death.
2. Inspe t the Regulator and Hose
a. Look for uts, ra ks or other damage.
b. Che k to be sure there is an O-ring on the regulator
inlet.
. Che k to be sure there is an O-ring on the nipple
on the hood end of the hose.
3. Inspe t the Carrier (and Optional Shoulder Strap, if
provided)
a. Look for tears, uts and abrasions.
b. Che k the straps and strap hardware:
•All D-rings and the strap hooks must be pre-
sent and undamaged.

allowing full adjustment of the strap.
4. Inspe t the Cylinder Valve
a. Look for broken or bent parts on the handwheel
and pressure gauge.
b. Open and lose the valve to be sure it works properly.
. Inspe t the pressure gauge:
•The lens must not be ra ked or broken.
•The gauge fa e must be visible without distortion.
•The gauge needle must operate.
5. Inspe t the ylinder at least monthly or before ea h use,
to be sure it is FULL (2216 or 3000 psi on the pressure
gauge).
Hood Packing Instructions for TransAire Apparatus
1. Lay the hood flat and fold in thirds lengthwise.
2. Fold the top third of the hood over.).
3. Put the hood inlet assembly outside of the hood.
4. Pla e the hood into the pou h on the arrier by first
inserting the tube into the pou h, followed by the fold-
ed hood. Leave the hood inlet assembly exposed.

eassembling the Escape Hood:
1. Che k to be sure there is an O-ring in the regulator
inlet. Thread the pressure regulator on to the ylinder
valve and tighten with a suitable wren h.
2. Pla e a full air ylinder in the arrier and tie the open-
ing losed around the ylinder ne k.
3. Che k to be sure there is an O-ring on the hood hose
nipple.
4. Thread the hose nut on the hood inlet and hand-
tighten only.
5. Install the hood hose and hood in the po ket. Close
the hook-and-loop strip.
6. Pla e the apparatus in its storage lo ation, ready for
use.
Component Inspection (At Least Monthly)
1. Che k the ylinder. It must be full (gauge reads 2216
or 3000 psi).
2. Remove the hood and hose. Che k for holes, uts, or
other damage.
3. Cra k the ylinder valve for a few se onds to make
sure air flows to the hood. Close the valve tightly.
4. Fold the hood and pla e it and the hose into the
po ket. Close the hook-and-loop strip on the po ket.
