toonlineshouldnotexceedfive(5.0).Tobecertainofthenumberof devicesyoumayconnect toyour line,asdetermined
bytheREN, youshouldcontactyourlocal telephonecompanytodeterminethemaximumRENforyourcallingarea.If
yourtelephoneequipmentcausesharmtothetelephonenetwork, theTelephoneCompanymaydiscontinueyourservice

INTRODUCTION
TheBluetooth wirelesstechnologyprovidesshort-rangewirelesscommunicationsthatreplacethe
physicalcableconnectionsthattraditionallylinkelectronicdevices.
Network access points
Computers(desktop,notebook, PDA,etc.)
Imagingdevices(printer,camera)
Audiodevices(headset, speakers)
Bluetoothwirelesstechnologyalsoenablescommunicationbetweenthe abovedevicesand
Bluetoothenabledphones(example:cellular,cordless,smart phones).
TheBluetoothforWindowssoftwareconsistsofthe followingcomponents:
Microsoft Windows ExplorerExtensions-providesaccesstoBluetoothdevicesin the
immediatevicinityusing WindowsExplorer.
My BluetoothPlaces-graphicaluserinterface(GUI)that providesaccess toBluetooth
devicesinthe immediatevicinity.Alsoprovidesaccess toconfigurethe localdevicesand
access toperformotherBluetoothtasks.
BTTraySecurityManager-controlsand managesBluetoothsecuritylevels. Enablesuserto
grant ordenyaccess and tofilterwhatcanbe accessed on aBluetoothdevice.
BluetoothforWindowsConfiguration Panel-configuresBluetoothforWindows(BTW)
softwareusing WindowsControlPanel.
Stack Server-providesaninterfaceforthe operating systemtocontrolBluetoothdevices
and toensurethat Bluetoothconnectionsoperatetogethercorrectly.The stack serverhasa
built-inSecurityManagerthat protectsthe Bluetoothdevicefromunauthorized access.
BluetoothSetup wizard-facilitatesthe configuration andmodification ofBluetooth
environment. The wizardcanbe used toconfigureorchange localservicesortoestablish
connectionstoremotedevicesbased on servicetype ordevicetype.
Quick Connect -facilitatesfast connectionsbased on servicetype.Enablesusertoquickly
find devicesthatsupport aparticularserviceand establishaconnection tothat service.
During thisprocess, ashortcut tothe serviceiscreated inMy BluetoothPlaces, whichcan
be used forsubsequentconnections.
BLUETOOTHTRAY
The Bluetoothtrayresidesinthe notification area, at the farright ofthe taskbar.The Bluetooth
trayprovidesfast access tomost Bluetoothoperations.
Fromthe Bluetoothtraythe usercan:
Access My BluetoothPlaces—double-click the Bluetoothicon, orright-click theBluetooth
icon and then select ExploreMy BluetoothPlaces.
Access the BluetoothSetup Wizard.Thiswizardenablesthe userto:
Configurehowthiscomputeraccessesaserviceon anotherBluetoothdevice
LocateremoteBluetoothdevices
Configurethe waythat thiscomputerprovidesservicestoremoteBluetoothdevices
Set the nameand type ofthisBluetoothdevice, e.g., John'sPCand Desktop.
Access the BluetoothConfiguration Panel—right-click the Bluetoothicon,and then select
Advanced Configuration.
Access the Quick Connect option—right-click the Bluetoothicon, selectQuick Connect, and
then select the type ofservicetowhichyou wishtoconnect.
Start/Stop Bluetoothon thiscomputer.

FromWindowsExplorer,selectMyBluetoothPlacesinthe Folderspaneorfromthe Address
shortcut menu.
Example1:
Doubleclick My BluetoothPlaceicon on your
desktop.
Click Folderon the toolbar. Folderwindowwill appear
on leftside ofyourscreen.
Example2:
Right clickon the lowerright hand cornerofyour
screen.
Select ExploreMy BluetoothPlaces.
Twofolders appearon the window.Theyare:
EntireBluetoothNeighborhood and My Device.
Click EntireBluetoothNeighborhood tosearchfor
devicesavailabletoyou.OnceBluetoothdevicesare
detected, theiriconstogetherwithdevicenameswill
be displayed on the screen.

Deviceiconshavethree states:
Normal-thisunadorned iconindicatesthe presenceofadevicein the vicinity.Eachtype of
deviceisrepresented byadifferenticon. Forexample,the icon tothe rightrepresentsa
desktop computerinanormalstate.
Connected -devicesthat areconnected tothiscomputerarerepresented byanicon witha
green tint and/orasmallbuttingarrowsboxaddedtothem(). Forexample, the iconto
therightrepresentsadesktop computerthatisconnectedviaBluetoothtothiscomputer.
Paired -devicesthatarepaired withthiscomputerarerepresented byanormalicon witha
smallcheckboxadded toit (). Forexample, theicon tothe right representsadesktop
computerthatispaired withthiscomputer.
Therearesomedifferencesbetween the deviceiconsused byWindows9x,ME, and 2000, and
thoseused byWindowsXP. Forthe deviceiconsused byyoursystem, see Table2orTable3.

ServicesarewhataBluetoothdevicecandoforotherBluetoothdevices,suchasprovideaccess
toalocalarea network,orthe abilitytosend afax.
Somedevices,suchasheadsetsornetworkaccesspoints,mayprovide onlyasingle service.
Others, suchasdesktop and laptop computers, canpotentiallyprovide all ofthe Bluetooth
services.
Single-servicedevicesoften usevirtuallythe sameicon fortheserviceasthat used forthe
device. Forexample, the headset serviceicon isidenticaltothe headsetdeviceicon.
Multiservicedevicesuseadifferent icon foreachservicethattheyprovide.
Serviceiconshavethree states:
Normal -thistypeofunadornedicon indicatesthat aspecificserviceispotentiallyavailable
fromthe selecteddevice.Forexample, the icon tothe right indicatesthat the Bluetoothserial
portservicemaybe available.
Connected -thistype oficon indicatesthatthiscomputerisconnected tothisservice.The
icon hasagreen tintand/orasmallbutting arrowsboxadded toit(). Forexample, the
icon tothe right indicatesthat thiscomputerisconnected tothe Bluetoothserialport service
oftheremotedevice.
NotAvailable-thistype iconindicatesthatthe servicethatit representsisnot available.
Servicesthat arenot availablearerepresented byanormalicon withasmall Xboxadded to
it ().Forexample, the icon totheright indicatesthat the Bluetoothserialportserviceis
notcurrentlyavailable.
Therearesomedifferencesbetween the serviceiconsused byWindows9x, ME, and 2000, and
thoseused byWindowsXP. Forthe serviceiconsused byyoursystem, see Table4orTable5.
Note: Aservicemaybe unavailablebecauseit (orthe required hardware)isinuse, or
becausethe required hardwareisnot installed. Example: ifthe faxmodemisbusy, ornot
installed, then the faxservicewill be unavailable, even though Bluetoothsupportsthat
service.

TostartBluetooth-inthe notificationarea,at the farrightofthetaskbar,right-clicktheBluetooth
icon and select Startthe BluetoothDevice.TheBluetoothiconisblue incolorwithawhiteinsert
when Bluetoothisrunning.
TostopBluetooth-inthe notification area,atthe farrightofthe taskbar, right-click the Bluetooth
icon and select Stop the BluetoothDevice.The Bluetoothicon isblue incolorwithared insert
when Bluetoothisstopped.
CREATEACONNECTIONFROMTHEBLUETOOTHICONINTHESYSTEM
TRAY
Inthe notification area,at thefarright of the taskbar,right-click the Bluetoothicon,select Quick
Connect and then select the desired Bluetoothservice.
Ifthiscomputerhascreated aconnection tothe desired type ofserviceinthe past, the options
on the shortcut menu are:
The name(s)ofanydevice(s)withwhichpriorconnectionstothistype ofservicehavebeen
established. Select anamefromthe list tore-establishthe connection.
OtherDevices-select thisoptiontosearchforadditionaldevicesthat potentiallyprovide the
desiredservice,select adevicefromthe list, and then click Connect.
Ifthiscomputerhasnevercreated aconnection tothistype ofservice, the onlyoptionon the
shortcutmenu isFind Devices.Select thisoption tosearchfordevicesthatpotentiallyprovide
the desired service,select adevicefromthe list, and then click Connect.
CREATEACONNECTIONUSING THEBLUETOOTHSETUPWIZARD
Toopen the setup wizard:
Fromthe Notification area, at the farright ofthe taskbar-right-click the Bluetoothicon and
selectBluetoothSetupWizard.

FromWindowsExplorer, select My BluetoothPlaces, and thenfromthe Bluetoothmenu,
selectBluetoothSetupWizard.
Followtheon-screen instructions.
Note: Depending on the installed operating systemand howWindowsExploreris
configured, theremayalsobe double-click and/orright-click optionsavailabletoaccess
the Bluetoothsetup wizard.
CREATEACONNECTIONFROMENTIREBLUETOOTHNEIGHBORHOOD
1.FromWindowsExplorer,inthe Folderspane, select My BluetoothPlaces, and then select
EntireBluetoothNeighborhood.
2.Inthe right pane ofMyBluetoothPlaces,right-click adevicename,and then selectDiscover
AvailableServices.

If apriorservicediscoverywasperformedontheselecteddevice,theservicesthatwerefoundwill
be listed in thedevice’sshortcutmenu.
If theselecteddevicehasaddedorreconfiguredaservice,orifthedesiredserviceisnotanoption
intheshortcutmenu,selecttheDiscoverAvailable Servicesoption toupdatethelistofservices
offeredbythedevice.
FINDBLUETOOTHDEVICES
SearchforDeviceslooksforBluetoothdevicesin thevicinityand displaysthedevicesthatitfinds
inMy BluetoothPlaces.

PeriodicSearchforDevices
Bluetoothcanbe configured tosearchautomaticallyfordeviceson aregularbasis(Bluetooth
Configuration Panel>Discoverytab).
One ofthe advantagesofBluetoothisthe mobilitythat the wireless connectionsallow. However,
mobilitymeansthatdevicesmaymovein orout of connection range duringthe timebetween
the automaticupdatesperformedbyBluetooth. Tobe certainthat the displayed list ofdevicesin
the neighborhood iscurrent, orifautomaticperiodicinquiry isnotenabled, forceanupdateof
the devicelist using the technique described inSearchforDevices,above.
Somedeviceswithinconnection range maynot showup inthe list ofdevicesfound because:
The deviceisconfiguredtoreport onlyspecifictypesorclassesofdevices(BluetoothCon-
figuration Panel>Discovery tab,onyourdevice).
The unlisted deviceisconfigured tobe nondiscoverable.Refertothe unlisteddevice’s
documentation forassistanceinmaking thatdevicediscoverable.
Note: Ifyou enablethe periodicsearchfordevicesfeatureyou mayexperiencesome
performancedegradation whilethe searchisinprocess,depending onthe type ofsystem
you have.
FindAService
The process ofdetermining the servicesthat adeviceprovidesiscalled ServiceDiscovery.
ToinitiateaServiceDiscovery, inMy BluetoothPlaces,right-click adevicenameand then,from
the shortcut menu, selectDiscoverAvailableServices.
Bluetoothservicesarethosethingsthat thiscomputercando forremoteBluetoothdevices. For
example, ifthiscomputerallowsaremoteBluetoothdevicetosend afaxusingafaxmodem
that isphysicallyattached tothiscomputer,thenthiscomputerisprovidingthe Bluetoothfax
service.

Someservicesarehardwaredependant;forexample, thiscomputercannotprovidethefaxservice
unlessit hasaphysicalfaxmodem.
SomeBluetoothservicesusevirtual hardware.TheBluetoothSerialPort service,forexample,
doesnot useaphysicalporton thiscomputer. Instead,it createsvirtualserialportsthatWin-
dowsapplicationscansee and useasiftheywereactualphysicalports.
EachBluetoothservicethatthiscomputeriscapableofproviding canbe started automatically
when Bluetoothstarts. Eachservicecanbe set up torequiresecuritymeasuresbeforeallowing
aremoteBluetoothdevicetoconnect.
BluetoothservicesrequireaBluetoothapplication on the remotedevice;servicesand applica-
tionsusuallyhavecoinciding names; i.e., thereisaBluetoothFaxServiceand aBluetoothFax
Application.
The servicessupported byBluetoothare:
BluetoothImaging -allowsaremotedevicetosend and receiveimages(BMP,GIF, PNG, &
JPG)tothiscomputer. Imagesarestored inthe Bluetoothexchange folder.
BluetoothSerialPort -allowsawireless connection between twodevices.Thisconnection
canbe used byapplicationsasthough aphysicalserialcableconnected the devices.
Dial-up Networking -allowsadevicetouseamodemthat isphysicallyattached toanother
Bluetoothdevice.
Fax-allowsadevicetosend afaxusing aremoteBluetoothcell phone,modem, or
computer.
FileTransfer-allowsadevicetoperformfilesystemoperationson anotherBluetoothdevice:
browse, open, copy, etc.
Headset -allowsaBluetoothheadset tobe used asthe audioinput/output mechanismfor
anotherBluetoothdevice,suchasacomputerorcell phone.
PIMItemTransfer-allowstwoBluetoothdevicestoexchange PersonalInformation Manager
datasuchasbusiness cards, calendaritems, email messages, and notes.
PIMSynchronization -allowstwoBluetoothdevicestosynchronizetheirPersonalInforma-
tion Managerdata.
Network Access -allowsadevicetoaccess aLocalAreaNetwork via asecond Bluetooth
devicethatisphysicallyconnectedtothe network orallowsaremotedevicetobecomepart
ofanadhocnetwork provided bythe Bluetoothserver.
AudioGateway-allowsthe microphone/speakerson aBluetoothdevice(typicallya
computer) tobe used asthe audioinput/output mechanismforaremoteBluetoothdevice,
suchasacell phone.
All Bluetoothserversdo not necessarilyprovide all oftheseservices. Forexample, network
gatewaysmayonlyprovide the Network Access service.
BluetoothConnectionStatus
The BluetoothConnection Statusdialog boxdisplaysinformation about the stateofaconnec-
tion and providesameanstodisconnect anactiveconnection.
DisplaytheConnection Statusdialog box-inMyBluetoothPlaces,select adevice,andthen, in
the rightpane ofMy BluetoothPlaces, right-click aservicenameand select Statusfromthe
shortcut menu.

The Information providedis:
Status-Connected orNotConnected.
DeviceName-thenameofthedevicetowhichthiscomputerisconnected.
Duration -thelengthoftimethat thisconnectionhasbeenestablished,displayedinhours,
minutesand seconds.Depending on the service,theconnection maytimeout (automatically
disconnect)afteraspecificperiod ofinactivity.
Activity-the numberofbytessentand receivedoverthe connection.
SignalStrength-agraphicindicatorthat rangesfromTooWeakthrough Good toToo Strong.
Note: Tochangethe powertransmission levelofthiscomputer: fromthe Bluetooth
Configuration Panel, Hardwaretab,click the Advanced button, and then change the
setting inthe MaximumPowerTransmission drop-downlist. The Advancedbutton isnot
availableinall countries.
