1 INTRODUCTION
This user manual contains instructions for the
installation, operation and maintenance of the NRS
Healthcare Community Beds.
The beds described in this user manual comply
with the following standards:
• EN IEC 60601-1:2006
• EN IEC 60601-1-2:2015
• EN IEC 60601-1-11:2015
• EN IEC 60601-2-52:2010
This product is classified as a Class 1 medical
device.
If you have any questions regarding the bed,
please contact NRS Healthcare (contact details are
provided on back cover).
1.1 Groups of People Mentioned in this Manual
This manual refers to the following groups of
people involved with the installation, inspection,
use, testing, maintenance or repair of the bed:
1.1.1 Owner
The owner (for example: suppliers of medical
products, dealers, health care authorities, etc.) can
be any person or organisation who owns the bed
or under whose name the bed is being used. The
owner is responsible for providing the necessary
training and information to the specialised
personnel and care provider.
1.1.2 Specialised Personnel
Specialised personnel are trained persons
responsible for the delivery, installation, inspection,
use, testing, maintenance or repair of the bed in
accordance with this manual.
1.1.3 Care Provider
Care providers are trained persons responsible for
the use and operation of the bed in accordance
with this manual and the user’s medical care or
treatment.
1.1.4 User
The user is the person requiring the bed for their
medical care or treatment.
2 SAFETY
You must read and observe the following safety
precautions before use.
A risk assessment must be performed before using
this bed. This should include but should not be
limited to:
• Suitability of the bed for the user.
• Selection of the correct mattress for the user.
• Compatibility of the mattress with the bed.
• The risk of the user slipping between the mattress
and the side rails.
• The risk of the user falling out of the bed.
• The risk of trapping or pinching.
• Any limitation of the user’s ability to operate the
bed.
Before using the bed you must make sure that:
• The product is safe and operating correctly.
• All persons responsible for installing, operating
or maintaining the bed have access to and have
fully read the user manual.
NRS Healthcare shall not be liable for any
damage or injury caused by failure to
follow the proper instructions in this user
manual.

2.2 Safety Instructions
ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
Install the power cord in a location that
protects it from damage or disconnection
during the operation of the bed.
Do not use multi plug sockets.
Remove the electrical power plug from the socket
before disassembly/transport and cleaning.
Regularly check that the power cords are securely
fastened, free from kinks, cuts & nicks and other
damage.

GENERAL WARNINGS
Do not exceed the maximum user weight
or safe working load (refer to Section 3).
Nursing beds are classified as active Class 1
medical devices. The owner must obey current
regulations regarding the installation, use and
operation of medical devices to make sure this
product is safe to use.
All specialised personnel and care providers must
be trained by the owner to use and operate the bed
safely in accordance with the user manual and the
user’s medical care or treatment.
Make sure substitute personnel have been fully
trained on how to use the bed correctly and safely.
Make sure the bed is free from obstructions before
making adjustments.
Bed adjustment must only be made by trained
personnel or under supervision of trained
personnel.
Make sure the hand control is securely fastened
with the hook when not in use.
Make sure the hand control cable is placed in a
location that protects it from damage during the
operation of the bed.
To reduce the risk of injury to the user, always set
the bed to the lowest position when leaving the
user unattended.
Regularly check the bed for damage to make sure it
is safe and operating correctly (refer to Section 13).
Make sure that any electrical accessories have
been installed correctly, including all cables and
flexible tubes etc.
Do not use third party accessories (excluding
mattresses) as these can cause serious injury or
damage to the bed.
You must disconnect the power immediately and
remove the bed from service if you suspect any
damage or malfunction to the bed. Clearly mark the
item as “DAMAGED” or “FAULTY” and report it to
the owner.
NRS recommends a full inspection after one year of
continuous use, or change of user (refer to Section
13).
3 INTENDED USE
The bed is intended to provide care for users within
the following environments:
• Application Environment 3: Nursing Home
• Application Environment 4: Private Home.
This bed is for indoor use only.
This bed must not be used for any other purpose or
environment than that which it is intended.
The maximum user weight is 180kg.
The safe working load of the bed is 220kg.
= 220KG= 180KG
The safe working load is calculated as follows (in
accordance with EN IEC 60601-2-52:2010):
Max user weight: 180kg
Mattress: 20kg
Accessories (including attached loads) 20kg
Total 220kg
If the combined weight of the mattress and
accessories exceeds 40kg, the maximum user
weight must be reduced accordingly.
The recommended patient size is; weight equal or
above 40kg, height between 146cm and 190cm
and BMI equal or above 17.

Following a risk assessment, patients taller than
190cm may be accommodated by extending the
bed (refer to Section 7.6).
This bed is not intended for children under 12 years
of age.
This product has been designed to be reused.
Do not reuse the bed without doing the following
steps:
• Cleaning and Disinfecting (refer to Section 12)
• Maintenance (refer to Section 13).

4 PRODUCT OVERVIEW
The bed is supplied unassembled comprising the following parts and assemblies:

The head end panel comprises the head end
frame, hi-lo actuator, side rail channels (1) and
castors (2).

The head end mattress platform comprises the
mattress platform frame, back-rest (3) and back-

4.1 Label Locations

Electrical System
The electrical operating system comprises:
• Electronic control box with connection cables
and mains power cable
• Hand control
• Head end hi-lo actuator
• Back-rest actuator
• Foot end hi-lo actuator
• Leg-rest actuator.
5 UNPACKING
Remove the packaging and check all parts
carefully. Make sure you check all electrical cables
and actuators for damage. Contact your supplier
immediately if parts are missing or damaged and
do not try to assemble.
The bed is supplied in two cartons as follows:
Carton 1 Contents:
• Head End Panel
• Foot End Panel
Carton 2 Contents:
• Head End Mattress Platform
• Foot End Mattress Platform
• Hand Controller
• Mattress Platform Connectors
• Transport Brackets
• Mattress retainer clips.
The back-rest actuator is stowed for
shipping and must be fixed to the frame
before assembly for use.
1. While supporting the actuator, remove the pin-
clip.
2. Lower the actuator into place, then line up the
holes and replace the pin-clip.
6 ASSEMBLY FOR TRANSPORT
This section is for beds being supplied by a
local authority community equipment store
only. For bed assembly instructions please refer
to Section 7.

The bed must be assembled onto the
transport brackets, by the owner, or by trained
specialised personnel, before transportation to
the user location.
The transport brackets are located under
the bed at the head end.

1. Unscrew the hand-wheels to release the
transport brackets.
2. Lock the foot end panel castors (refer to
Section 10.3).
3. Hook the transport brackets onto the foot end
panel brackets (lower pins) and secure with the
retaining pins on both sides.
Make sure the retaining pins are fully
inserted and the assemblies secured.
We recommend resting the foot end panel
against a wall before fitting the head end
panel.
4. Hook the transport brackets onto the head end
panel brackets (lower pins) and secure with the
retaining pins on both sides.
Make sure the retaining pins are fully
inserted and the assemblies secured.
5. Loosen the foot end mattress platform hand-
wheels on both sides.
6. Slot the foot end mattress platform on to the
transport bracket on the same side as the foot
end panel.
Make sure that the leg-rest actuator is
facing the inside of the transport bracket.

7. Re-tighten the hand-wheels on both sides.
8. Wrap and secure the electrical cables around
the foot end mattress platform.
9. Loosen the head end mattress platform hand-
wheels on both sides.
10. Slot the head end mattress platform assembly
on to the transport bracket.
Make sure that the head end mattress
platform actuator is facing the inside of the
transport bracket.
11. Re-tighten the hand-wheels on both sides.
12. Slot the mattress platform connectors on to the
transport bracket.
Make sure the transport assembly is
fully secure before attempting to move.
13. Unlock the castors before moving the transport
assembly (refer to Section 10.3).

7 ASSEMBLY OF BED FRAME FOR USE
The bed must only be assembled by
trained specialised personnel.
Each mattress platform must correspond with the
correct end panel. Please check the item labels for
confirmation. Incorrectly connected parts will cause
the handset to malfunction.
The bed must be disassembled from the transport
brackets before assembly. To disassemble, reverse
the steps in Section 6.
Make sure you have moved the back-rest
actuator from the shipping position to the
working position (refer to section 5).
7.1 Connect the Head End Mattress Platform to
the Head End Panel.
If you are using optional full length side
rails, the mattress platform must be set
to the correct height, depending on the
mattress thickness.

The mandatory minimum distance required
from the top of the uncompressed
mattress to the top side rail is 220mm.
1. Check the item labels to make sure the
mattress platform corresponds to the correct
end panel.
2. Lock the end panel castors (Refer to Section
10.3)
3. Remove the retaining pins from the head end
panel mounting brackets on both sides.
4. Hook the head end mattress platform frame to
the head end panel mounting brackets, then
reinsert the retaining pins to secure.
Make sure the retaining pins are fully
inserted and the assemblies secured.
7.2 Connect the Foot End Mattress Platform to
the Foot End Panel.
Make sure that the foot end mattress
platform is set at the same bracket height
position as the head end mattress
platform.
1. Check the item labels to make sure the
mattress platform corresponds to the correct
end panel.

2. Lock the foot end castors (refer to Section
10.3).
3. Remove the retaining pins from foot end panel
mounting brackets on both sides.
4. Hook the foot end mattress platform frame to
the head end panel mounting brackets, then
reinsert the retaining pins to secure.
Make sure the retaining pins are fully
inserted and the assemblies secured.
7.3 Assemble the Mattress Platforms
1. Lock the foot end castors (refer to Section
10.3).
2. Undo the hand-wheels fully on the foot end
mattress platform by turning them anti-
clockwise on both sides.
If the hand-wheels are not fully loosened,
the platform connectors will not insert fully.
3. Insert the platform connectors as far as they
will go.
Do not re-tighten the hand-wheels at this
stage.
4. Unlock the head end castors (refer to Section
10.3).
5. Loosen the hand-wheels fully on the head
end mattress platform by turning them anti-
clockwise on both sides.
6. Slot the head end mattress platform onto the
platform connectors until it is flush with the foot
end mattress platform.
If the mattress platforms do not meet,
make sure that all 4 hand-wheels have
been loosened sufficiently.
7. Once the mattress platforms meet, fully
re-tighten all the hand-wheels by turning
clockwise.
8. Grip the mattress platform in the middle and
agitate the frames in an up and down motion,
then recheck the hand-wheel tensions.
9. Unhook all rubber retaining straps from the
back-rest and the leg/calf-rest.
Make sure the bed is fully secure before
you proceed to the next step.
7.4 Connect the Control Box Cables to the
Actuators.
The control box cables and actuators are labelled
1 to 4, you must make sure they are connected
correspondingly (refer to the diagram on the next
page).
The cable connectors must be firmly pushed
into the actuator sockets or the actuators will not
operate.

• Cable 1 must be connected into the back-rest
actuator (labelled 1).
• Cable 2 must be connected into Hi-Lo actuator
at the foot end (labelled 2) of the bed.
• Cable 3 should already be connected (factory
fitted) to the leg-rest actuator (labelled 3).
• Cable 4 must be connected into the Hi-Lo
actuator at the head end (labelled 4) of the bed.
You must check the bed functions
correctly, in accordance with Section
10.4.
If the bed does not function, check the cables
are fully pushed in.
If an incorrect section moves when a button is
pressed, check all the cables are connected to
the correct actuators.
NRS recommends that the cables are
secured using the cable management
clips on the bed frame.
Make sure the cables have not been
damaged or become tangled during
installation.
Make sure all cables are free of moving parts
before use.
7.5 Fit the Mattress Retainers
Plastic mattress retainers must be fitted before
fitting the mattress.
Clip the plastic mattress retainers to the back rest
and leg-rest frames in the positions shown.
An additional retainer must be fitted if
extending the bed (refer to Section 9.3)
7.6 Extending the Bed
Do not extend the bed when it is
occupied by the user.
For taller users, the bed can be extended
by 150mm. Adjustment is made at the foot end of
the bed.
If you are fitting the 3-bar steel bed rails,
this should be done before you extend the
bed (refer to Section 8).
1. Remove the mattress.
2. Lock the head end castors (refer to Section
10.3).

3. Undo the bed extension hand-wheels at the
foot end of the bed on both sides.
4. Unlock the foot end castors (refer to Section
10.3).
5. Pull out the foot end panel from the foot end
mattress platform until the button clips click into
place on both sides.
6. Re-tighten the hand-wheels fully.
7.7 Fitting the Mattress Platform Extension plate
The mattress platform extension plate is located
under the foot end of the bed and is secured with
retaining pins.
1. To remove the mattress platform extension
plate, remove the retaining pins from the
storage bracket.
2. When the mattress platform extension plate
has been removed, replace the locking pins
into the storage bracket.
3. Fit the mattress platform extension plate in the
position shown.
Make sure the locating pins have fully
engaged the holes in the mattress
platform.
4. Lock the foot end castors (refer to Section
10.3).
7.8 Shortening the Bed
Do not shorten the bed when it is
occupied by the user.
1. Remove the mattress and mattress extension
squab.
2. Remove the mattress platform extension plate
and secure in the storage position with the
locking pins provided (refer to Section 7.7).
3. Lock the castors at the head end of the bed
(refer to Section 10.3).
4. Release the bed extension hand-wheels on
both sides of the bed (refer to Section 7.6).
5. Push the button clips in on both sides of the
foot end mattress platform (refer to Section
7.6).
6. Unlock the castors at the foot end of the bed
(refer to Section 10.3).

7. Push the foot end panel into the mattress
platform as far as it will go (refer to Section
7.6).
8. Re-tighten the hand-wheels fully.
9. Lock the castors at the foot end of the bed
(refer to Section 10.3).
8 FITTING AND REMOVING THE OPTIONAL
SIDE RAILS
8.1 Steel 3-Bar Side Rails (P80423)
NRS recommends fitting the steel 3-bar
side rails before extending the bed.
1. Raise the bed to the maximum height in
accordance with Section 10.4.
2. Undo the 2 x locking screws on one side of the
bed.
3. Insert the plastic side rail carriages into the
side rail channels, taking care not to snag the
wires.
The extending section of the side rail must
always be fitted at the foot end of the bed.
Make sure the side rail label faces up at
the head end of the bed.
4. While holding the side rail assembly in place,
tighten the locking screws at both ends of the
bed.
You must make sure all locking screws
are fully tightened before you proceed
to the next step.
5. Remove the plastic side rail clips (store safely
as these will be needed to remove the side
rails).
6. Repeat for the opposite side of the bed.
Reverse the above steps to remove the side
rail assembly.
To operate the side rails, refer to Section
10.6 & 10.7
NRS recommends using the optional side
rail loading channels (P82055) to assist
the loading/unloading and transportation of
the 3-bar steel side rails (refer to Section 11 for
details).

8.2 Aluminium 3-Bar Side Rail (P80563)
If the bed has been extended you must fit
the aluminium side rail extensions
(P80575) before installation.
1. Raise the bed to the maximum height in
accordance with Section 10.4.
2. Undo the 2 x locking screws (refer to Step 2,
Section 8.1).
3. Insert the plastic side rail carriages into the
side rail channels, taking care not to snag the
looped wires.
Make sure the side rail label faces up.
4. While holding the side rail assembly in place,
tighten the locking screws at both ends of the
bed.
You must make sure all locking screws
are fully tightened before you proceed
to the next step.
5. Repeat for the opposite side of the bed.
Reverse the above steps to remove the side
rail assembly.
To operate the side rails, refer to Section
10.6 & 10.7
NRS recommends using the optional side
rail loading channels (P82055) to assist
the loading/unloading and transportation of
the 3-bar aluminium side rails (refer to Section 11
for details).
8.3 Steel 3/4 Folding Side Rails (P80435)

1. Loosen the side rail hand-wheels all the way.
2. Position the side rails so the locking lever knob
is always at the foot end of the bed.
3. Tilt the side rail forward and clip over the bed
platform, then slide the bottom fixing under the
bed platform by straightening up the side rail.
< 60mm
The gap between the side rail and the
head end must be less than 60mm.
4. Fully tighten both hand-wheels.
You must make sure all hand-wheels
are fully tightened before you proceed
to the next step.
5. Repeat for the opposite side.
Reverse the above steps to remove the side
rail assembly.
To operate the side rails, refer to Section
10.8 & 10.9

9 FITTING THE MATTRESS
9.1 Mattress Selection
The NRS community bed has been designed
to accommodate a standard 2000 x 900mm
mattress in 6” (150mm) and 8” (200mm)
thickness.
A risk assessment must be carried out on the
user to make sure the correct mattress type is
selected.
If an alternating pressure type mattress has
been selected, the air pump must be fitted to
the foot end of the bed.
Make sure that all air pump air hoses
and electrical cables are kept well clear
of the moving parts of the bed.
If you are using straps to secure the
mattress, do not tie to any fixed part of
the bed frame as this will cause
damage to the actuators and mattress. You
must make sure they are tied to the back-rest
frame or leg-rest frame as shown below.
9.2 Fit the Mattress to the Bed
1. Check the mattress platform has been set to
the correct height for the thickness of mattress
(refer to section 7.1).
2. Fit the mattress to the bed.
3. Make sure the mattress is securely fitted inside
of the mattress retainers.

If using side rails, the distance from the
top of the uncompressed mattress to
the top of the side rail should be at
least 220mm.
Check that all moving parts of the bed can
move freely before operating the bed.
9.3 Fit the Mattress to an Extended Bed
A 900 x 150mm mattress squab infill is required to
fill the gap between the mattress and the head end
panel.
An additional mattress retainer (P81245) is
required at the head end of the back-rest
to secure the mattress squab infill.
1. Fit the additional mattress retainer.

2. Place the mattress at the foot end of the bed.
3. Insert the mattress squab at the head end of
the bed.
The mattress squab must always be
placed at the head end of the bed.
4. Make sure the mattress and mattress squab
are securely fitted inside of the mattress
retainers.

10 BED OPERATIONS
10.1 Special safety warnings
To avoid serious injury, make sure all
non-user personnel are clear of the
bed.
Make sure all user body parts are clear of
entrapment hazards before making any bed
adjustments.
Make sure that any installed accessories
can not cause injuries to the user during bed
adjustments.
The risk assessment must consider the users
ability to safely operate the bed. If the user is
unable to safely operate the bed, the handset
must be locked out when not in use or stored
out of reach of the user. Refer to Section
10.4 for the operation of the handset lock-out
function
To avoid damage, make sure that all
cables and accessories are clear of the
moving parts before operating the bed.
Make sure the power, motor and hand-
control cables have not been damaged during
assembly.
To prevent overheating of the actuators,
the bed must only be operated for a
maximum of 2 minutes, before leaving
for 18 minutes rest.
10.2 Pre Operation Checklist
The user must do the following before using the
bed:
• Make sure that the bed castors are locked (refer
to Section 10.3).
Trendelenburg functions require the
castors to be unlocked at one end of the
bed (refer to Section 10.4.5, 10.4.6 and
Section 10.3).
• Make sure that the power supply is compatible
with the bed (230 Volt, 50 Hertz).
• Make sure the power cable is plugged in and
positioned away from danger or moving bed
parts.
• Check the bed electrical functions, in accordance
with Section 10.4, before use.
10.3 Locking the Castors
The bed has four swivel castors that can be
independently locked.
Locking the castors locks the rotation and
swivel of the castor.
Note: The castors are not the same for each bed,
please refer to the section applicable to your bed
(Standard or Low).
