Chapter 1
Getting started
This chapter provides the basic procedure to copy your
originals on the Océ 9800. It also explains in what
configurations the Océ 9800 is available.

10 Océ 9800 Copier/Printer User Manual
Switching on and off
The Océ 9800 can be switched on by hand, or switched on automatically by
the time switch. The setting of the time switch is set by the key operator. The
on/off timer switch with the key is located on the scanner (see figure 1). Turn
this key to the ‘timer’ position if you want it to switch on and off automatically.
Your key operator can program the time switch to switch on the system each
day of a work week at a specified time. This can be quite handy because the
warm-up time of the system will be approximately 20 minutes. By activating
the timer you’ll find the system ready for use, when you are.
The on/off timer switch has three settings:
■on: the system is switched on.
■off: the system is switched off.
■timer: the system will be switched-on automatically at a time of your choice
and switched-off after a certain idle time.

How to do a simple copy job
1. Place your original face-up, left aligned along the original guide. The
original feed table of the scanner accepts originals up to 1050 mm wide.
For folded output, originals should be fed in portrait orientation with the
legend in the bottom left hand side. The folded package will be deposited
face-up (legend visible).
2. Specify the number of copies using the numeric buttons.
3. Specify reduction/enlargement or copy material on the right hand side. Use
the roll selection buttons to select copy material of your choice. You can see
the format of each roll next to the roll selection buttons. Zooming, if required,
will be done automatically.
4. Exposure can be changed at the left hand side. This side of the operating
panel contains finishing buttons as well. By pressing the fold button, for
example, you will get a neatly folded copy.
5. To start the copy job press the green start button .
Your original will be fed into the scanner. The printer starts.
6. Collect your output. Your copy will be delivered on the selected output unit
of the print engine.

Chapter 2
Using the Océ 9800
This chapter is about layout and use of the operating panel.
You’ll learn how to use the buttons around the display to
define print settings for the original you are about to copy.

18 Océ 9800 Copier/Printer User Manual
The operating panel (layout and use)
The operating panel forms the main part of the scanner. It is located over the
original feed. The Océ 9800 scanner operating panel is illustrated in this
manual’s inside back cover. As you can see in this scheme, the panel consists
of buttons on the left and right side, a display in the centre, and below this the
start, numeric, correction, and stop buttons.
This section consists of two parts. The first part explains for basic use the
names of the fixed buttons and where to find them. The second part is about
special use, that is the use of the display. That is how to use the soft buttons
over and along the sides of the display to define your print settings.
[5] Operating panel
Buttons
Start The button marked with is used to start the feeding of the original,
or to re-start the copy process, or for other purpose such as to mark the end of
a set.
Numeric buttons The buttons with numbers on the lower part of the middle

indicated on the operating panel.
In ‘Auto roll’ mode, the Océ 9800 will start to look for a matching roll of the
‘Standard’ copy material. If such a roll is not found, it will try to find a
matching roll of another type of material. The Key Operator can define the
‘Standard’ copy material, as described in ‘Defining the standard copy material
type’ on page 102.
If ‘Auto roll’ and ‘Auto zoom’ are both selected, the size of the matching roll
does not necessarily have to be the same as the size of the original. For more
information, see ‘Auto format selection’ on page 72.
Auto zoom With this button the operator can set the automatic zoom selection.
Having a copy material roll selected, the machine computes the required
reduction/enlargement ratio to obtain a copy without loss of information.
+ - Two zoom step buttons are available on the operator panel’s right side, just
below the zoom display. Press one of these buttons to step wise change the
zoom factor. Zoom steps can be defined by the key operator.
