IMPORTANT: Overland Storage requires that ARCvault
parts be removed and replaced by an Overland Storage
authorized service provider. Improper installation may
result in damage which voids existing warranties.
This document describes how to remove and replace a
Shuttle assembly in an Overland ARCvault Series library.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock or
damage to equipment, disconnect the power by
unplugging the power cord.
WARNING: It is recommended that a mechanical
lifter (or at least two people) be used to prevent
injury during rack removal and reinsertion.
CAUTION: Be sure all screws and washers are accounted for
during this procedure. A loose object can cause the library not
to function.
CAUTION: Do not over-torque the shuttle carriage screws when
installing the new shuttle! Use only 2-3 IN LB of torque.
Unpacking
Carefully unpack and verify that you have all the parts:
•Shuttle assembly
•Two 4-20x5/16 screws
•Four M2x4mm screws
•These remove & replace instructions
In addition, you will need a #1 magnetic Phillips
screwdriver. You may also need the Magazine Removal
Tool (MRT) from the Accessory Kit (or equivalent).
IMPORTANT: If the shuttle still contains a tape cartridge,
contact Overland Technical Support for information on
removing it.
Electrostatic Discharge Information
To help prevent Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) damage,
observe these and other standard ESD precautions:
•Use a wrist strap and properly-grounded tools.
•Make sure you are always properly grounded.
•Avoid touching pins, leads, or circuitry.
Remove Magazines
To lower the weight of the unit, remove the magazines
before removing the unit from the rack.
CAUTION: Keep a loaded magazine level. Tilting the magazine
can result in the tapes falling out. Also, don’t hold a magazine
by just the handle; use both hands to support it.
NOTE: If unable to power up the library, refer to the ARCvault
user guide for instructions on removing magazines manually.
1. Press Utilities > Service > Access All Mags > OK (at
the going offline message) > Unlock All.
2. Open the doors and remove all the magazines.
3. Close the doors.
4. Press Relock All and OK at the removal message.
5. Press Back three times.
6. Press Power > Power Off Library > OK (at the
power down message) to power down the unit.
Remove Unit from Rack
1. At the rear, remove the power cord and all cables.
2. At the front, loosen the retaining screws inside the
front doors.
3. Using either a mechanical lifter or at least two people,
remove the ARCvault unit from the rack and place it
on a secure, flat surface.

Remove Old Shuttle Assembly
1. Remove the front top cover, retaining the screws.
2. Using a magnetic #1 Phillips screwdriver, remove the
four screws (Figure 1) holding the shuttle assembly
to the shuttle carriage.

3. Carefully remove the two screws holding the cable
bracket to the rear of the shuttle.
4. Unplug the Bar Code Reader and Picker Motor
cables from their sockets (Figure 2).
To remove them, press the release tabs on the outside
of the plugs and pull gently.
5. Set aside the old shuttle assembly.

6. Using your finger, roll the top of the coupling tube
AWAY from the front panel to move the shuttle
carriage toward the center of the track plate.
Move it out at least 1 inch (2.5cm) for easier access.

1. Plug the Bar Code Reader and Picker Motor cables
into their sockets on the new shuttle assembly.
2. Using two new 4-20x5/16 screws, reattach the cable
bracket to the new shuttle.
3. Using the alignment ribs (Figure 4), position the
shuttle over the carriage assembly on the track plate.
4. Lower the shuttle onto the carriage plate, aligning the
four holes.

5. Very gently, using four new M2x4mm screws, attach
the shuttle assembly to the shuttle carriage.
IMPORTANT: With the screw on the end of the
magnetic screwdriver, guide it down the hole to the
carriage assembly. Tighten to no more than 2-3 IN LB.
6. Using the retained screws, reattach the front top
cover.
Reactivate the Library
1. Return the library into rack.
2. Tighten the retaining screws on the front.
3. Reinsert the media magazines and close the doors.
4. At the rear, reattach all network cables.
5. Plug in the power cord and power on the unit.
6. Verify that the POST inventory passes to confirm the
functionality of the new shuttle.
