Introduction
This Quickstart guide describes the tools and provides the know-how to install and work with the Linux Board Support Package (BSP) for the phyCORE-i.
MX 8M Plus Alpha Kit. This guide shows you how to do everything including installing the appropriate tools and sources, building custom kernels, and
deploying the OS in order to operate the software and hardware.
This kit is currently in Alpha Status. There are several topics to keep in mind while working with this kit and guide:
The phyCORE-i.MX 8M Plus will go through several functional changes during the Alpha Stage of development. Due to this, this Quickstart guide
may change without any prior notice.
The phyCORE-i.MX 8M Plus has some functionality that is not currently operational. Please be aware of this when working with the Alpha Kit.
This Quickstart guide is only for booting and starting the basic functionality of the phyCORE-i.MX 8M Plus. This guide does not qualify as a
Hardware manual for the phyCORE-i.MX 8M Plus. The following manuals will be available in future releases of the phyCORE-i.MX 8M Plus:

Requirements
The following components and system requirements are necessary to successfully complete this Quickstart. Deviations from these requirements are
possible but may require workarounds.

Connecting the phyBOARD-Pollux
There a few manual connections that you will need to make before using the phyBOARD-Pollux.
Connecting the USB Debug Interface
For the following steps, a console connection via USB is required. You can use the included USB Type-A to micro USB cable.
Connect your PC's USB port with the micro USB connector of the phyBOARD-Pollux (X1). After plugging the micro USB cable into X1 a green
LED (D13) will light up to indicate a present USB bus voltage.
Your device manager will show two new COM ports. Select the first COM port. On the processor side, UART2 is the default debug UART of the
A53 Cores.
Setup your Terminal with the following parameters:
Speed: 115200 baud
Data bits: 8
Stop bits: 1
Parity: None
Flow control: None
Connecting the RS-232 / RS-485 Interface
There is a multi-protocol transceiver providing RS-232 as DTE, RS-485 Full-Duplex und RS-485 Half Duplex. On the processor side, UART1 is connected
to the transceiver. The Protocol can be set up by JP3 and JP4 (see table below).

Warning
As this is an Alpha Kit, there will be continuous revisions being made to the phyCORE-i.MX 8M Plus SOM and phyBOARD-Pollux. Due to this,
components and features may not be available. Contact PHYTEC if there any questions regarding components and features for this Alpha Kit.

Use adapter 2.54 10P to DB9P Male (WF228) or connect the phyBOARD Pollux to the periphery via a DB9 cable.
Connecting the CAN Interfaces
There are two CAN-FD transceivers providing CAN and CAN-FD (CAN flexible datarate) up to 8 Mbps.
The processor FLEXCAN1 is connected to the X3 transceiver. FLEXCAN2 is connected to the X4 transceiver. Additionally, X3 and X4 deliver a +5 V
voltage source at pin 9.

Use adapter 2.54 10P to DB9P Male (WF228) to connect the phyBOARD-Pollux to your periphery via a DB9 cable. Remove JP1 (and optionally JP2) if the
120 Ohms termination is not needed in your CAN topology.
Connecting USB
Connect your USB3.0 Device to one of the two host sockets of X5. The lower socket is connected via a USB hub to USB2 of the i.MX 8M Plus. The upper
socket is directly connected to USB1 of i.MX 8M Plus. By using a 1:1 USB cable, the upper socket can be used as OTG too.
Connecting to the Ethernet
Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet ETH0 port (X9) on the phyBOARD-Pollux. Connect the other end to a suitable Ethernet source (10/100/1000),
as the development host will need to communicate with the phyCORE-i.MX 8M Plus.
The ETH1 port (X8) is not working in the Alpha Kit.
Connecting a phyCAM-M camera module
The processors MIPI CSI-2 interface (CSI1) is brought out on connector X11 as a phyCAM-M interface. Connect a VM-016 camera module via WF271
30P-FFC to use with the phyBOARD-Pollux.
The CSI2 interface on connector X12 is not working in the Alpha Kit.
Connecting LVDS Display and Touch-Screen
Use the cables to connect the Display (AC168) to the phyBOARD-Pollux. WK475 is needed for the Backlight. ConnectWK475, WK476, and WK477
WK475 to X26 on the phyBOARD-Pollux. WK476 in needed for the LVDS Data-Lanes and configuration. Connect WK476 to X24 on the phyBOARD
Pollux. WK477 is optionally needed for Display-Touchscreen. If needed connect WK477 to USB-Host Connector X5.
Connecting WLAN Adapter PEB-WLBT-05-UCon.A0
PEB-WLBT-05-UCon.A0 connects to phyBOARD-Pollux at Expansion Connector X6 (pin 1 to pin 50 pin 51 to pin 60 are not connected).
Powering the Board
It is recommended to power the phyBOARD-Pollux with the power supply (SV055) included in the kit. Connect the power supply to the Power-In connector
(X23).
Warning
Do not modify JP3 or JP4 while the board is powered.
Tip
RS-232 DTE (data terminal equipment) means that TXD and RTS are outputs, RXD und CTS are inputs

It is possible to power the phyBOARD-Pollux with a USB-PD (USB power-delivery) supply instead of the power supply SV055.
Connect a conform USB-PD supply to USB-C connector X22 right next to Power-In connector X23.
Linux Host PC
A modern operating host system either natively or via a virtual machine.Linux
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 64-bit recommended. Other distributions will likely work but note that some setup information, as well as OS-specific
commands and paths, may differ.
VMWare Workstation, VMWare Player, and VirtualBox are possible solutions if you want to use a virtual machine.
Root access to your host PC. Some commands in this guide will not work if you do not have access (e.g. package installation,Linux sudo
formatting an SD card).
At least 40 GB to 50 GB of free space on the build partition of the host PC.
An SD card reader operational under .Linux
An active internet connection.
Getting Started with the Included SD Card
This section is designed to get the board up and running with the SD card included in the kit, which has been prepared with pre-built images.
Warning
Please note the polarity of the power component X23. Ensure that your power adapter is correctly set up to use the polarity as shown below.
Warning
Do not power phyBOARD-Pollux via X22 and X23 at the same time.
Tip
Be aware that as soon as the phyBOARD-Pollux is supplied with power, the SD Card boot sequence will begin. Ensure that all cables are
connected to the board!

Booting from the SD Card
This section describes how to boot the phyBOARD-Pollux with the pre-built images on the included SD card.
Insert the micro SD card into the SD card slot of the board.
Start your favorite terminal software (e.g. or ) on your host PC and configure it for 115200 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, and 1Minicom Tera Term
stop bit (8n1) with no handshake.
Connect the power supply to the power connector (please note the polarity shown in the picture ).Power Schematic
The console output can be viewed in your terminal window. If everything was done correctly, the login prompt will be shown at the end of the booting

Building the BSP
This section will guide you through the general build process of the i.MX 8M Plus BSP using the phyLinux script.
If you want to use our software without phyLinux and the Repo tool managed environment instead, you can find all Git repositories on:

Warning
If you do not have SD card access under on your host PC then formatting, copying the bootloader, and mounting the root file system onLinux
an SD card will not be possible.

Warning
Be aware that with the shipped a Weston with the image is started during bootup. When no display isphytec-qt5demo-image, phytec-qtdemo
connected, the QTdemo will fail to start but Weston will still run regardless of whether a display is connected or not. This creates load even on a
.headless system. Disabling Weston and the is described in sectionphytec-qtdemo Display

Get the BSP
Create a fresh project directory:

Download and run the phyLinux script:

Finding the Right Software Platform
The i.MX 8M Plus BSP is planned as a unified BSP, which means, in the future, it will support a set of different PHYTEC carrier boards (CB) with different
Systems on Module (SOMs). However, this ALPHA BSP supports the PHYTEC machine:

Software Platform Selection
To select the correct SoC, BSP version, and platform call:

Build Process
After you have downloaded all the metadata with phyLinux init, you have to set up the shell environment variables. This needs to be done every time you
open a new shell for starting builds. We use the shell script provided by in its default configuration.Poky

System Booting
The default boot source for the i.MX 8M Plus module phyBOARD-Pollux is eMMC. But for the , the BSP is available on SD-Card. To updatealpha release

Booting from eMMC
To boot from eMMC, make sure that the BSP image is flashed correctly to the flash. On DIP switch S1, all positions need to be set to off.
The following boot sequence can be seen:

Booting from SD Card
Booting from the SD card is useful in several situations, e.g. if the board does not start anymore due to a damaged bootloader. To boot from SD card,
switch S1 position 1 has to be set to ON.
There are two ways to create a bootable SD card. You can either use:
A single, prebuilt SD card image
The four individual images ( -, kernel- and device tree image, and root filesystem)u-boot
Single, Prebuilt SD Card Image
The first possibility is to use the SD card image built by , a tool integrated in . This image has the ending and can be found underBitbake Yocto *.sdcard buil
. It contains all BSP files in correctly preformattedd/deploy/images/phyboard-pollux-imx8mp-1/phytec-qt5demo-image-phyboard-pollux-imx8mq-1.sdcard
partitions and can be copied to the SD card easily using the single command .Linux dd

The created file is only a link to a file likephytec-qt5demo-image-phyboard-pollux-imx8mp-1.sdcard phytec-qt5demo-image-phyboard-pollux-
