AfterbeginningtouseyourHurricanePMVonadailybasis,youmayencountersituationsthat,atfirst,mayrequire
somepractice tonegotiateonyourPMV.Withalittlebitofpatience andpractice, youwillsoonbeabletoachieve
totalcontrolthrough doorways, elevators, upanddownramps, and overgrassandgravel.
Doors
Determineif thedooropenstowardorawayfromyou.Use yourhandtoturntheknobor pushthehandleorpush-
bar. Drive your HurricanePMVgently andslowlyforwardtopushthe door open; or driveourHurricanePMV
gentlyandslowly backwards topullthedoor open.
Elevators
Modernelevators haveadoor-edge safetymechanismthat,whenpushed, willreopenthe elevatordoor(s).Ifyou
are in the doorway of an elevator when the door(s) begin to close, push on the rubber door edge or allow the
rubber door edge to contact the PMV and the door will reopen. Use care that pocketbooks, packages, or
HurricanePMVaccessoriesdo not become caughtintheelevatordoors.
Ramps and Other Inclines
Anincreasingnumberof buildingshaverampsforPMVaccess.Theremaybeaturningswitchbackin themiddle
oftherampwhichmayrequireproficientcorneringskills.Takewideswingswithyourfrontwheelsaroundanytight
corners,sothe back wheelswilltracea wide arcandnotshortcutthe corner.Whengoing down aramp,itisbest
tokeepyour speed dialsettothe slowestspeedsettingto ensure asafelycontrolleddescent.Avoidsuddenstops
onanyincline.
Rough Terrain
Your HurricanePMVisdesigned tooperateongrass,gravel,andhills. However, youmustnotexceedtherecom-
mendationsinthismanual.Safetymust alwayscome first.If youareuncertainaboutasituation,avoidit.Feelfree
touse yourHurricanePMV onlawnsorinparkareas,butavoid tallgrass.Packed gravel,suchasindriveways or
onroads willnotpresent aproblem,but avoidlooselypacked gravelorsand. Thepowerof yourHurricanePMV
willenable youtoclimb hills,butto ensureproperstability, donotexceed thespecificationslistedbelow.

Thecontrolledtests showthat,when youapproachanincline, itisbest toleanforward.See figures2and 3.This
shifts thecenterof gravityofyou andyourHurricanePMVtowardthe frontofthe PMV forimprovedstability.
Your HurricanePMVwasdesignedtoprovideoptimumstability undernormaldrivingconditions;dry,levelsur-
facescomposed ofconcreteor asphalt.However, Priderecognizesthat therewillbetimeswhen youwilloperate
yourscooteron surfaces other thanconcreteorasphalt. For thatreason,wealsodesigned your HurricanePMV
toperformadmirably onpackedsoil,grass, andgravel.
!Feelfreetouse your Hurricane PMVsafelyonlawnsand in park areas.
!Avoidtallgrassthatcanentangletherunninggear.
!Packedsoil,gravel, driveways, or roadswillnotpresent a problem foryourHurricanePMV.
!Avoid looselypackedgraveland sand.
!Ifyou feelunsureabout adrivingsurface,avoidthatsurface.

!Donot insertthekey intothecontrol consoleunlessyou areontheseatand readytouse thevehicle.Remem-
bertoremovethekeywhenyougetoffthevehicle.Thiseliminatesthepossibilityofaccidentallydepressingthe

!NeveruseyourHurricane PMVasa seatin amovingvehicle.YourHurricane PMVisnot designedtobeused
assuchandcannot protect you in theeventofanautomobile accident or an abruptstop.
!Donotcarry passengersonyourHurricane PMVunderanycircumstances.
!Never drive your Hurricane PMV across the side of a hill or diagonally up or down a hill; do not stop, if
possible,whiledrivingupordownanincline.
!Donot exceedthe specificationsinthismanual.
!Always protect batteries from freezing temperatures and never charge a frozen battery; this damages the
batteryand maycausepersonalinjury. Attempting tochargeabatteryinfreezingconditionsdoes notprevent
thebatteryfromfreezing.
!KeepbothhandsonthetillerandyourfeetonthefloorboardatalltimeswhileoperatingyourHurricane PMV.
Thisrecommendeddrivingpositiongivesyouthemostcontroloveryourvehicle.
!Makecertain thattheseatislockedintoplaceandthe keyisremovedfromthekeyswitch beforegetting onor
offofyourHurricanePMV; make certain that the seat is in a locked position when you are operatingyour
HurricanePMV.
!Useextreme cautionwhendrivingonbusy streets,in parkinglots,orinshopping malls.
!Proceedwithextremecautionwhen driving near raised surfaces orunprotectedledgesordrop-offs(curbs,
porches,stairs,etc.).
!Disconnectthebatteries if youarenotgoing to operateyourHurricanePMV for morethan48hours.
!Consultyourphysicianorpharmacistifyouaretakinganymedication(s)thatmay affectyourabilitytocoher-
entlyoperateyourHurricane PMV.Your HurricanePMVis amotorizedvehiclethatrequirescoherentmental
judgmentandunimpaired reflexes.
!Check the tire pressure frequently and make sure they are inflated to 30 psi. Your Hurricane PMV was
designedfor optimumperformanceandstabilityatthistire pressure.
!Securethebatteries beforeloadingyour HurricanePMVinto anothervehiclefor transport.
!Batteryposts,terminalsandrelatedaccessoriescontainleadandleadcompounds. Washhandsafterhandling.
WARNING! Do not expose the electronics to any type of moisture at any time (rain, snow,
mist, or washing the Hurricane PMV). Such exposure can damage the electronics. Never
attempt to ride a Hurricane PMV that has been exposed to moisture until it has dried
thoroughly.
WARNING! Do not operate or store the Hurricane PMV where it may be exposed to inclem-
ent weather conditions such as rain, snow, mist, and below-freezing temperatures (such
as storage on an outside car/van lift). Attempting to operate the Hurricane PMV in such
conditions can damage the electronics and potentially result in loss of control.
WARNING! Do not operate a Hurricane PMV in icy or slippery conditions or on salted
surfaces (i.e., walks or roads). Such use may result in an accident, personal injury, or
adversely affect the performance and/or safety of your Hurricane PMV.
WARNING! Always protect batteries from freezing temperatures and never charge a fro-
zen battery. This damages the battery and may cause personal injury. Attempting to
charge a battery in freezing conditions does not prevent a battery from freezing.

WARNING! Radio waves may interfere with the control of your Hurricane PMV.
Radio waves can cause unintended motion of Hurricane PMVs. Radio waves are a form of electromagnetic
energy(EM).Whenthisenergyunintentionallyaffectstheoperationofanelectronicdevice,itiscalledElectromag-
netic Interference (EMI) or Radio Frequency Interference (RFI).
EMI/RFI—FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
ThefollowingFAQssummarizewhatyoushouldknowaboutEMI/RFI.Youmayusethisinformationtominimize
therisk thatEMI/RFIwill affectyourHurricanePMV.
Wheredoradiowavescomefrom?
Radiowaves areemittedfromtheantennasofcellularphones,mobile two-wayradios(likewalkie-talkies),radio
stations,TVstations,amateurradio(HAM)transmitters,wirelesscomputerlinks,microwavesources,andpaging
transmitters.Radiowaves areaform ofelectromagneticenergy.Because EMismoreintense closertothe trans-
mittingantenna (sourceofemission), theEMfields fromtwo-wayradiosareof specialconcern.
IfmyHurricane PMV is affectedbyEMI/RFI, what kind ofmotionshould I expect?
Thisis difficulttopredict.Itwoulddependonanumber offactors,including:
!Strengthofthe radiowaves.
!Constructionof theHurricanePMV.
!Positionofthe HurricanePMV(whetherit is onlevelground or onaslope).
!Whetherornot theHurricanePMV isinmotion.
AnaffectedHurricane PMV’s movementcanbe erratic.Itmay movebyitselforcometoasudden stop.Further-
more,itis possible forEMI/RFItounexpectedly release thebrakesonaHurricane PMV.Someintense sources
ofEMI/RFIcan evendamagethecontrol system.
Isthereanyway toknowforsurewhetherradiowavesare responsiblefortheunintendedmotionofmy
HurricanePMV?
Unfortunately,interferencefrom radio wavesourcesmaybedifficulttorecognize,since the signalsfromthese
sourcesareinvisible andmaybeintermittent. However,you shouldreportallincidents ofunintendedmotionor
brakereleasetothe Hurricane PMV manufacturerand,ifpossible,note whether there wasaradiowavesource
nearbyat thetimeof theincident.
Hasanyonebeenhurtfromerratic,unintendedmotionofpersonalmobilityvehicles?
TherearereportsofinjuriesthatresultedfromtheuncontrolledmotionofPMVs.However,itisunclearhowmany
ofthese incidentswereactually causedbyradio waveinterference.
Areall personal mobility vehiclessusceptible to EMI/RFI?
Eachmakeandmodeldiffersinitsabilitytoresistelectromagneticinterference.Thatis,eachhasaparticularlevel
of“immunity”tointerference,measuredinvoltspermeter(V/m).Ahigherimmunityleveloffersgreaterprotection.
Inotherwords,aPMVwithahighimmunitylevelislesslikelytobeaffectedbyastrongradiosourcethanonewith
alowimmunitylevel.
III. EMI/RFI

Whatcan I doto find outif my HurricanePMVislikely to beAffectedbyEMI/RFI?
Ifyou’ve hadyourHurricanePMVforalongtimeandhaven’texperiencedany unintendedmotion,it’snotlikely
thatyou’llhaveproblemsinthefuture.Butit’salwayspossiblethatproblemscouldariseifyouareclosetoasource
ofradiowaves.Therefore,it isveryimportantto bealerttothis possibility.If you wanttofind outhowwellyour
HurricanePMVisprotectedagainstEMI/RFI,youcancontactthemanufacturerandaskaboutitsimmunitylevel.
WhatcanI do toreducetheriskthatmy Hurricane PMVcouldbeAffectedbyEMI/RFI?
Herearesomeprecautions you can take:
!Do not turn on or use hand-held personal communications devices, such as citizens band (CB) radios and
cellularphones whilethe HurricanePMVison.
!Beawareofnearby transmitters, such asradioorTVstations and hand-held or mobiletwo-wayradios,and
trynot tocomeclosetothem.Forexample,if youareinaHurricane PMVwithanimmunitylevelof20V/m,
you should remain at least three feet from a hand-held two-way radio and ten feet from a mobile two-way
radio.
!Beawarethataddingaccessoriesand/orcomponents, or modifying the Hurricane PMV may make it more
susceptibletointerferencefromradiowavesources.Thereisnoeasywaytoevaluatetheireffectuponthe
overallimmunityoftheHurricanePMV.
WhatshouldIdoif my Hurricane PMV moves unexpectedly?
Ifunintendedmotionorbrake release occurs, turn the Hurricane PMVoffassoonasit is safe to do so.
IfmyHurricanePMVmovesunexpectedly,whereshouldIreportthis?

Thisassemblyhouses allofthe controlsyouneed todriveyour HurricanePMV.
WARNING! Keep the console free from moisture. In the event that the console becomes
exposed to moisture, do not attempt to operate the Hurricane PMV until it has been dried
thoroughly.
Battery Condition Meter
Wheneveryouhavethe key fully inserted, this meter gives an approximate reading of your Hurricane PMV’s
batteryvoltage. Seefigure 6.
Horn Button
Thekeymust befullyinsertedinto thekeyswitchfor thehorntobe operational.Thisbuttonactivates awarning
horn.Donot hesitate tousethewarning horn whenitsusecouldprevent accident orinjury. See figure6.
Throttle Control Lever
ThisleverallowsyoutocontroltheforwardspeedandthereversespeedofyourHurricanePMVuptothemaximum
speedyoupresetwith thespeedadjustmentdial.Placeyourrighthandontherighthandgripandyourlefthandonthe
lefthandgrip.UseyourrightthumbtopushtherightsideofthelevertodisengageyourHurricanePMV’sbrakeand
moveforward.ReleasetheleverandallowyourHurricanePMVtocometoacompletestopbeforepushingtheother
sideof thelevertomoveinreverse.When thethrottleiscompletelyreleased,itautomaticallyreturnstothe center
(stop)position andengagesyourHurricanePMV’sbrake. Seefigure6.

OnBoard Battery Charger
The batterychargeris locatedintheleft corner of theutilitytray. See figure7.This isagraycolored plastic box
witha greenLEDindicatoronthe exteriorofthe case.Themainpowercord extendsfromthechargerand should
becoiledtothesideofthetrunk.Usethereusablefastenerstrapto coil the power cord.
To ensure that the chargeranditspowercorddonotbecomedamaged, exercise caution when storing personal
itemsinthe electronicsmodule.Also beawarethat thebatterychargercouldwarm upduringbattery charging.
Electronic Controller Module
Theelectronic controllermoduleis ontherightsideof theutilitytray. Seefigure7.Thiscontrollerreceives direc-
tionsfromthe control consoleassemblyandsends power tothemotor,thebrakes,and thelightingsystem.
WARNING! Keep the electronic controller module free from moisture. In the event that
the electronics become exposed to moisture, do not attempt to operate the Hurricane
PMV until it has been dried thoroughly.

motorandelectronics from damage.The main circuitbreakerismounted on theelectroniccontrollerassembly.
Seefigure7.Themaincircuit breaker reset button pops out when thebreakertrips.Whenthebreakertrips,the
entireelectricalsystemofyourHurricanePMVis shut down.Allow a minute or so for your Hurricane PMV’s
electronicsto“rest.” Push inthereset button toresetthebreaker.If thebreakertripsfrequently, you mayneedto
chargeyour batteriesmoreoften.Youmayalso need tohaveyourHurricanePMVdealerperform a loadteston
yourHurricanePMV’sbatteries. Ifthemaincircuitbreakertripsrepeatedly,seeyourauthorizedPrideproviderfor
service.
Ammeter
The ammeter is located on the utility tray. See figure 7.You can check the charge level of the batteries by the
ammeter.Thebatterychargermustbe pluggedintoapoweroutlettoobtainareading.Whentheamperagereading
isatornear zero (0)amps,thebatterycharging is complete.
Anti-Tip Wheels
Theanti-tip wheels are a vital safety feature of your HurricanePMV.Never remove the anti-tip wheels. They
preventtheHurricanePMVfromtippingbackwardsonanincline.Seefigure7.
Handbrake (Optional)
The handbrake lever is located on the tiller handle. It offers additional stopping power.You must release the
throttlewhenusing thisbrake,otherwisetheHurricanePMVmaynotcometoacompletestop.
Manual Freewheel Lever
WhenyouneedtopushyourHurricanePMVforshortdistances,youcanplace itin manualfreewheel mode. The
manualfreewheellever is locatedontheend of themotorassembly(right rearofthePMV). Pull thisleverupto
disablethedrivesystem.Themotorisalsoelectricallydisengagedfromthecontrolboxandwillnotrunwhenyou
press the throttle lever. See figure 7.

Howdoesthechargerwork?
WhenyourHurricanePMV’s batteryvoltageis low,thechargerworks extraandsends moreelectricalcurrent to
thebatteriestobring up their charge.As the voltage of thebatteriesapproachesafullcharge,thechargerworks
lesstocomplete thechargingcycleby sendinglessand less electricalcurrentto the batteries.Whenthe batteries
arefully charged,thecurrent beingsenttothemfrom thechargerisatnearly zeroamperage.Therefore, whenthe
chargerispluggedin,it maintainsthechargeonyourHurricanePMV’sbatteries, butit doesnotoverchargethem.
We do notrecommendthatyou chargeyourHurricane PMV’s batteriesformorethan 24 consecutivehours.
Whatdoesthe LED onthe charger indicate?
ThegreenLEDturnsonafterthebatterieshavebeen fullycharged. Insome instances,the greenLED maystayon
afterthe chargerhasbeen unpluggedfromthewalloutlet.Althoughusersmay perceivethisasachargermalfunc-
tion,itisanormalcondition. The green LED goes off when the batteriesreach26VDC,whichmaytakea few
minutes.
CanI use a differentcharger?
Forthesafest,mostefficient,and balanced charging of your Hurricane PMV’sbatteries,wepreferandhighly
recommendthesimultaneous chargingofbothbatteries byuseof theonboardbatterycharger.
Howoften must I chargethe batteries?
Twomajorfactors mustbeconsideredwhen decidinghowoftento chargeyour HurricanePMV’sbatteries.

With these considerations in mind, you candeterminejusthowoftenandfor how long you should chargeyour
HurricanePMV’sbatteries.We designedtheonboardchargersothatit does notoverchargeyourPMV’sbatter-
ies(do notchargethemformorethan 24consecutivehours).However,youmayencounter someproblemsifyou
do not charge your batteries often enough and if you do not charge them on a regular basis. Follow the five
guidelinesbelow toprovidesafe andreliablebatteryoperationand charging.
!If you use your Hurricane PMV daily, charge its batteries as soon as you finish using it for the day.Your
HurricanePMVwillbereadyeachmorningtogiveyoua“fullday”ofservice.Werecommendthatyoucharge
yourHurricanePMV’sbatteriesfor8to 14 hours afterdailyuse.
!If you use your Hurricane PMV once a week or less, charge its batteries at least once a week for 12 to 14

Rarelywillyouhave idealdriving conditions;smooth,flat,harddrivingsurfaceswithnowindorcurves.Youwill
often face hills, sidewalk cracks, uneven and loosely packed surfaces, curves, and wind.All of these driving
conditionsaffectthedistanceorrunningtimeperbatterycharge.Thefollowingareafewsuggestionsforobtaining
themaximum rangeper batterycharge.
!Alwaysfully chargeyour HurricanePMV’sbatteries priortoyourdailyuse.
!Maintain30psi (poundspersquare inch)inall ofyourHurricanePMV’stires.
!Planyourrouteahead to avoid as manyhills,cracked,broken,or soft surfaces as possible.

Whattype and sizeof battery should I use?
We recommend deep-cycle batteries that are sealed and maintenance free. Both Sealed Lead-Acid (SLA) and
Gel Cell are deep-cycle batteries that offer similar performance in your Hurricane PMV. Do not use wet-cell
batteries,which haveremovablecaps.
NOTE: Do not remove the caps from sealed batteries. Water cannot be added to sealed batteries. Cap
removal voids the battery warranty and may cause damage to the batteries and to your Hurricane PMV.
Use these specifications to reorder deep-cycle batteries:

Why do my new batteries seem weak?
Deep-cyclebatteriesemployadifferentchemicaltechnologythanisusedincarbatteries,nickel-cadmiumbatteries
(nicads),orinothercommonbatterytypes. Deep-cyclebatteriesarespecificallydesignedtoprovidepower,draindown
theircharge,andthenacceptarelativelyquickrecharge.
We workcloselywithourbatterymanufacturersto providebatteriesthatbestsuityourHurricane PMV’sspecific
electricaldemands.Freshbatteries arrive daily at Prideandareshippedfully charged to ourcustomers.During
shipping,thebatteriesmayencountertemperature extremes that may influence their initial performance. Heat
diminishesthechargeonthebattery; coldslowsthe availablepowerand extendsthetime neededtorecharge the
