Chapter 1 RAID Introduction
1.1 What is RAID?
RAID (redundant array of independent disks or redundant array of inexpensive disks)
Whenever and wherever we are, we store our data in a hard drive. Abnormally access, slower speed
and unresponsiveness are all expected when an accident occurs or the hard disk reaches its service
life because a hard disk is widely used. By then, all data stored within may be destroyed and become
permanently irretrievable. RAID technology spares you from the threats of losing your data again!
RAID (redundant array of independent disks or redundant array of inexpensive disks) allows you to
store your data into multiple drives by dividing them up into segments. It provides data redundancy and
creates a fault-tolerant environment for data storage. With multiple drives used (at least 2) in a RAID,
it increases storage capacity as well as enhances the speed of data transfer. Be equipped with it and
you will never have to worry about the integrity of your data again because your data will be 100%
protected.

1.3 RAID 0 / RAID 1 / Linear
SL3610/SL3620-2S-LB2 provides RAID 0, RAID 1 and Linear functions described as follows:
Notice : SL3610 ONLY support RAID 0 and RAID 1
Striping (fast, has no fault tolerance; requires at least two hard disks)

The RAID 0 array does not backup data, so it is not regarded as a real RAID application. If one of the
hard disks is damaged, the entire array will fail, and all data in the array will be lost. Therefore, the fault
tolerance of RAID 0 is lower than that of any hard disk in the array. However, RAID 0 is still the term
widely used to describe these arrays. It is because that its basic idea is similar to real RAID application.
Notice : 1. We strongly suggest you to use two hard drives with the same brand name and capacity to get the
best compatibility.
2. If you use two hard drives with different capacity to build RAID 0, the storage space added to the array
by each disk is limited to the size of the smallest disk.
Ex: 1×320GB HDD + 1×500GB HDD Total Capacity=320GB×2=640GB
However, there is an exception under Linux O.S. The space added to the array by each disk will be the
sum of two hard drives.
Ex: 1×320GB HDD + 1×250GB HDD Total Capacity=820GB
RAID 1: Mirroring (High security; at least 2 hard disks required)
In the RAID 1 array (commonly referred to as mirroring array), hard disks are paired up; each of the
two disks contains identical data. As data is written into the mirroring array, it will be written at once and
read simultaneously. Mirroring array is highly reliable. Because it will not fail until the paired hard disks
fail at the same time. For instance, in a mirroring array of ve-pair hard disks, even as many as ve
hard disks fail, the array still can maintain the data integrity --as long as each pair has one good hard
disk left.
Notice : We strongly suggest you to use two hard drives with the same brand name and capacity to get the best
compatibility. If the capacity of two hard drives is different, the total capacity will be counted with the small
capacity. For example: 1×320GB HDD + 1×500GB Total Capacity=320GB

1) Only SL3620 support this mode.
2) Linear mode will sum up the volume of all hard drive. When the rst device reaches capacity, data is
sent to the next device in the group. But offers no real improvement in performance.

Notice : 1. If the hard disks are inserted and the formatting or disk array setting is completed, do not change the
position of the disks arbitrarily.
2. To replace or remove the hard disks, please shut down the machine and turn off the power rst.
Removing the hard disks while the power is on will result in system malfunction and may damage the
data.

Notice : 1. The indicator on the left will light on green when Gigabit LAN Port is connected to Gigabit LAN and the
indicator on the right will light on orange when Host Access is enabled.
2. With startup completed, press and hold the “Reset” key for 5 seconds and the system will be reset to
default settings. (SL3620 Only)
3. SL3610 and 3620 use 6cm and 4cm Smart Fan separately, which will adjust the rotation speed by the
temperature control system.

2.3 Hardware Installation
Please follow the procedure below to complete the hardware installation of SL3610/3620-2S-LB2:
1. Open the outer package and take out the product body. (Make sure the related accessories and the
product body are not damaged or missing. If you have any questions, contact the distributor or sales)
2. Mount the product to a stable surface. Make sure that the fan is not blocked and there is appropriate
space around for heat dissipation. (Do not place the product nearby water area or any environment
that may cause damage to the product)
3. Take out the tray and install your hard disk in it. Make sure to fasten the hard disk securing screws to
prevent damages caused by unnecessary movement.

4. Once the installation is completed, insert the tray back and x it rmly in the proper place.
5. Connect the Gigabit LAN port and, nally, connect the power cord.
6. Hardware installation is completed. You can power on the system to start the related setup and
application.
7. You can use related management interfaces to make the respective congurations. Please refer to
Chapter 3.
2.4 Initial Setup
SL3610/3620-2S-LB2 supports the use of the graphic user interface (GUI) for system management.
You can manage settings via the GUI. It takes about 2 minutes to start SL3610/3620-2S-LB2 after
power on. Before the startup is completed, the system will be unable to nd SL3610/3620-2S-LB2.
1. Open the browser and enter the IP address
(1) Use DHCP to deliver IP address:
You can use IP detect tool (Please nd the software “Setup Util.exe” attached on the CD and refer to
Chapter 3.8 for the user instruction) to search the delivered IP address for SL3610/3620-2S-LB2. Open
the browser to input the IP address and then you can login to the Web GUI to set up the system.
(2) Use Static IP address:
The default IP of SL3610/3620-2S-LB2 is 192.168.1.1. Please change the IP of the computer which is
connected with SL3610/3620-2S-LB2 to the same IP as 192.168.1.xxx. Next, open the browser to input
the IP address, and then you can login to the Web GUI for setting up the system. Changing IP address
is available as well. For operation method, refer to Chapter 3.
Notice : The attached software “Setup Util.exe” only supports Windows, other operating system please use
method (2).

The default account and password are as follows:
Login Username: admin

2. If you use formatted hard disks, the system will display current system information and setting will
be available. If you use 2 new hard disks, you need to format the hard disks or create a disk array
rst. Enter “Maintenance” and click “Disk Utility” if you want to format the hard disks separately or
“Disk Array” if you want to set the disk array directly. Once formatting or disk array setting is
completed, the system will restart. After login, the system will display the present system information
and setting is available. For detailed descriptions of system setting and hard disk formatting, refer to
Chapter 3.
※ If you use formatted hard disks, the system will display the present system information and be ready
for setting.
※ When a new hard disk is detected, the system will require formatting rst.

3. Please enter “Basic Setting” and click “Wizard” to change the system related information, including
host name, IP address and password, etc. For detailed descriptions, refer to Chapter 3.
Change IP setting
Notice : 1. Before the disks are formatted or the disk array is created, be sure not to change any system
information. Since all system information will be recorded in the hard disk, all system will be lost if the
hard disk is formatted again or the disk array level is changed.
2. If you need to install another SL3610/3620-2S-LB2, be sure to change the host name, IP address and
password of the rst one for recognition by the machines you set subsequently and to make sure that
the IP address will not be changed randomly.
4. Once the system information is changed, the system will restart automatically. After login, you can
use the system normally and installation is complete. You can start to perform related share and
authority settings.
Notice : 1. If you change the IP address, the system may display “unable to open the web” after restart. Enter the
new IP address in the browser and you will see the login page.

3.2 Login
SL3610/3620-2S-LB2 supports graphic user interface (GUI) to manage the system. Make sure that
the network wire is connected and the setting program is installed rst. Refer to Chapter 2.3 for related
settings. For the example below, IP address is: 10.1.2.200 (your own host IP address) Open the
browser and input: http://10.1.2.XXX
The default account and password are as follows:
Login account: admin
Default Password: admin
After login, you can choose a function from the list to the left side of the window for related congures.
NOTE: After login, the system will detect the hard disk automatically. If the hard disk installed is a new
one, the system will bring up a dialog window that recommends formatting of the hard disk. Please
format the hard disk before performing other related settings.
Notice : You can choose to format the hard disk separately or create the disk array system directly.
