These instructions together with those in the instruction booklet cover
the basic principles to ensure the satisfactory installation of the stove,
although detail may need slight modification to suit particular local site
conditions.

STOVE PERFORMANCE

a Smok Control Ar a in th UK, unl ss it has b n accr dit d as a Smok Control
Ex mpt applianc (Ch ck with your suppli r/install r).
PREPARATORY WORK AND SAFETY CHECKS
IMPORTANT WARNING
This stov must not b install d into a chimn y that s rv s any oth r h ating applianc .
Th r must not b an xtractor fan fitt d in th sam room as th stov as this can caus
th stov to mit fum s into th room.
Chimn y
In ord r for th stov to p rform satisfactorily th chimn y h ight must b suffici nt to
nsur an ad quat draught of approximat ly 15 Pa so as to cl ar th products of
combustion and pr v nt smok probl ms into th room.
NOTE: A chimn y h ight of not l ss than 4.5 m tr s m asur d v rtically from th outl t of
th stov to th top of th chimn y should b satisfactory. Alt rnativ ly th calculation
proc dur giv n in EN 13384-1 may b us d as th basis for d ciding wh th r a particular
chimn y d sign will provid suffici nt draught.

with Building R gulations Approv d Docum nt J or a twin wall d insulat d stainl ss st l
flu to BS 4543 can b us d. Th s chimn ys must b fitt d in accordanc with th
manufactur r’s instructions and Building R gulations.

suitabl for using for th compl t chimn y. Th chimn y and conn cting flu pip must
hav a minimum diam t r of 150 mm and its dim nsion should b not l ss than th siz of
th outl t sock t of th stov .
Any b nd in th chimn y or conn cting flu pip should not xc d 45°. 90° b nds should
not b us d.
Combustibl mat rial should not b locat d wh r th h at dissipating through th walls of
fir plac s or flu s could ignit it. Th r for wh n installing th stov in th pr s nc of
combustibl mat rials du account must b tak n of th guidanc on th s paration of
combustibl mat rial giv n in Building R gulations Approv d Docum nt J and also in
th s stov instructions.
If it is found that th r is xc ssiv draught in th chimn y th n a draught stabilis r should
b fitt d. Fitting of a draught stabilis r will aff ct th r quir m nt for th p rman nt air
supply into th room in which th stov is fitt d in accordanc with Approv d Docum nt J
(s also combustion air supply).

chimn y is not ind p nd ntly support d. Th w ight of th stov is indicat d in th
brochur .
Th stov should always b install d on a non-combustibl h arth of a siz and
construction that is in accordanc with th provisions of th curr nt Building R gulations
Approv d Docum nt J.
Th cl aranc distanc s to combustibl mat rial b n ath, surrounding or upon th h arth
and walls adjac nt to th h arth should comply with th guidanc on th s paration of
combustibl mat rial giv n in Building R gulations Approv d Docum nt J and also in
th s stov instructions.
If th stov is to b install d on a combustibl floor surfac , it must b cov r d with a
non-combustibl mat rial at l ast 12mm thick, in accordanc with Building R gulations
Approv d Docum nt J, to a distanc of 30 cm in front of th stov and 15 cm to ach sid
m asuring from th door of th combustion chamb r.

Combustion air supply
In ord r for th stov to p rform ffici ntly and saf ly th r should b an ad quat air
supply into th room in which th stov is install d to provid combustion air. This is
particularly n c ssary if th room is doubl -glaz d or a flu draught stabilis r is
op rating in th sam room as th applianc . It may b n c ssary to incr as th air
v nt siz in prop rty with low air p rm ability ( < 5.0 m

).
Th provision of air supply to th stov must b in accordanc with curr nt Building
R gulations Approv d Docum nt J. An op ning window is not appropriat for this
purpos .
IMPORTANT NOTE: If applicabl and th applianc is b ing fitt d within an xisting

v ntilation within this ar a.
Conn ction to chimn y
Stov s may hav a choic of ith r a r ar or top flu gas conn ctor that allows
conn ction to ith r a masonry chimn y or a pr fabricat d factory mad insulat d m tal
chimn y in accordanc with th ir instructions. In som cas s it may b n c ssary to fit
an adaptor to incr as th diam t r of th flu to th minimum r quir d 150 mm s ction
of th chimn y or lin r.
El ctrical S rvic s
Th installation of any l ctrical s rvic s during th installation of this applianc must b
carri d out by a r gist r d comp t nt l ctrician and in accordanc with th
r quir m nts of th lat st issu of BS 7671
Carbon Monoxid Alarm
A carbon monoxid alarm complying with BS EN 50292 must b fitt d in th sam room
as th applianc . It should b position d on th c iling at l ast 300mm from any wall or,
if it is locat d on a wall, as high up as possibl (abov any doors and windows) but not
within 150mm of th c iling. Th alarm should also b b tw n 1m and 3m horizontally
from th applianc .

Installation
It is prohibit d to carry out unauthoris d alt rations to th stov .
Th r must b pl nty of fr sh air in th room wh r th stov is b ing install d, in
ord r to nsur prop r combustion. Not that any m chanical xhaust v ntilation -
.g. an xtraction hood - may r duc th air supply. Any air grill s must b plac d
in such a mann r, that th air supply is not block d.
Building R gulations Approv d Docum nt J giv s sp cific guidanc on th r quir d
p rman nt v ntilation into th room for combustion air of solid fu l applianc s.
Th floor structur must b abl to carry th w ight of th wood burning stov , as
w ll as th w ight of a chimn y, if n c ssary.
Wh n you choos wh r to s t up your RAIS wood burning stov , you should
consid r th h at distribution to th oth r rooms. This will nabl you to g t th b st
us out of your stov .
Th stov should b s t up at a saf distanc from inflammabl mat rials.

Commissioning and handov r
Ensur loos parts ar fitt d in accordanc with th instructions giv n in th
instruction bookl t.
On compl tion of th installation allow a suitabl p riod of tim for any fir c m nt
and mortar to dry out, wh n a small fir may b lit and ch ck d to nsur th
smok and fum s ar tak n from th stov up th chimn y and mitt d saf ly to
atmosph r . Do not run at full output for at l ast 24 hours.
On compl tion of th installation and commissioning nsur that th op rating
instructions for th stov ar l ft with th custom r. Ensur to advis th custom r
on th corr ct us of th applianc with th fu ls lik ly to b us d on th stov and
warn th m to us only th r comm nd d fu ls for th stov .
Advis th us r what to do should smok or fum s b mitt d from th stov . Th
custom r should b warn d to us a fir guard to BS 8423:2002 (R plac s BS
6539) in th pr s nc of childr n, ag d and/or infirm p rsons.

missioning ch cks d scrib d in th installation instructions hav b n carri d out
corr ctly and that th chimn y has b n sw pt cl an, is sound and fr from any
obstructions. As part of th stov s’ commissioning and handov r th install r
should hav shown you how to op rat th stov corr ctly.
CO Alarm
Your install r should hav fitt d a CO alarm in th sam room as th applianc . If
th alarm sounds un xp ct dly, follow th instructions giv n und r “Warning Not ”
abov .
Us of fir guard
Wh n using th stov in situations wh r childr n, ag d and/or infirm p rsons ar
pr s nt a fir guard must b us d to pr v nt accid ntal contact with th stov .
Th fir guard should b manufactur d in accordanc with BS 8423:2002
(R plac s BS 6539).
If th fir is l ft unatt nd d a spark guard to BS 3248, sp cification for spark
guards for us with solid fu l applianc s should b us d.
Chimn y cl aning
Th chimn y should b sw pt at l ast twic a y ar. It is important that th flu con-
n ction and chimn y ar sw pt prior to lighting up aft r a prolong d shutdown p -
riod.

In situations wh r it is not possibl to sw p through th stov th install r will
hav provid d alt rnativ m ans, such as a soot door. Aft r sw ping th
chimn y th stov flu outl t and th flu pip conn cting th stov to th chimn y
must b cl an d with a flu brush.

If th r is insuffici nt burning mat rial in th fir b d to light a n w fu l charg ,
xc ssiv smok mission can occur. R fu lling must b carri d out onto a
suffici nt quantity of glowing mb rs and ash that th n w fu l charg will ignit in
a r asonabl p riod. If th r ar too f w mb rs in th fir b d, add suitabl
kindling to pr v nt xc ssiv smok
Fu l ov rloading
Th maximum amount of fu l sp cifi d in this manual should not b xc d d,
ov rloading can caus xc ss smok .

If th chimn y is thoroughly and r gularly sw pt, chimn y fir s should not occur.
How v r, if a chimn y fir do s occur turn off th stov imm diat ly and isolat
th mains l ctricity supply (if applicabl ), and tightly clos th doors of th stov .
This should caus th chimn y fir to go out. If th chimn y fir do s not go out
wh n th abov action is tak n th n th fir brigad should b call d imm diat ly.
Do not r light th stov until th chimn y and flu ways hav b n cl an d and
xamin d by a prof ssional.
