CHAPTER
I NTRODUCTION
Congratulations on your purchase of the Raven Autoboom system! This
system is designed to provide worry-free operation of your hydraulically
controlled booms. The following instructions are designed to assist you in
the proper installation of the system hardware. The Autoboom hydraulic
installation process is fairly straight forward, however, prior knowledge of
the machine’s hydraulic system is beneficial. Be sure to follow the safety
and installation instructions within this manual and pay careful attention to
the hydraulic installation instructions. Improper installation could result in
a system that does not work correctly. After the completion of the hardware
installation, refer to the instructions in the PowerGlide, PowerGlide Plus
and UltraGlide Calibration and Operator’s manual.
Note: This manual contains the installation instructions
for the PowerGlide, PowerGlide Plus, and UltraGlide
Systems. Be sure to identify which system you have and
follow only the instructions for that system.

S AFETY
Installation
Safety
Requirements
This section is divided between general safety precautions, specific safety
measures with respect to the hydraulic and electrical systems, and machine
operation safety.
Safety Precautions
When working with or near a machine with Autoboom installed, the
following safety measures must be observed.
The operator must:
• Be alert and aware of surroundings.
• Not operate Autoboom or any agricultural equipment while under the influence
alcohol or an illegal substance.
• Remain in the operator’s position in the machine at all times when Autoboom is
engaged.
• Disable Autoboom when exiting from the operator’s seat and machine.
• Not drive the machine with Autoboom enabled on any public thorough-fare or
main road.
• Determine and remain a safe working distance from other individuals. The
operator is responsible for disabling Autoboom when the safe working distance
has diminished.
• Ensure Autoboom is disabled prior to starting any maintenance work on
Autoboom or machine.
Important: The machine must remain stationary and
switched off with the booms unfolded and supported
while installation or maintenance is conducted.

Hydraulic Safety Precautions
When disconnecting or purging hydraulic hoses, be aware that the
hydraulic oil within the machine system may be extremely hot and under
high pressure. Caution must be exercised. Any work carried out on the
hydraulic system must be performed in accordance with the equipment
manufacturer’s approved maintenance instructions. Raven industries
recommends that appropriate protective equipment be worn when working
on the hydraulic system.
Objects or materials that are able to bypass the machine’s hydraulic
filtration system will adversely reduce performance and possibly damage
the Autoboom hydraulic valves.
Electrical Safety Precautions
Do not reverse the power leads. Doing so will cause severe damage to
equipment. Always check that the power leads are connected to the correct
polarity as marked and ensure that the power cable is the last cable to be
connected.
Driving Safety
Requirements
This section outlines the safety requirements used when driving a vehicle
using the Autoboom system.
Areas of Operation
The Autoboom system must only be used on private property without
public access. It must only be used within cleared fields and must not be
used when traveling on any public roads or access ways. Raven Industries
advises that users familiarize themselves with Autoboom operation by first
reading the Autoboom Installation Manual and the PowerGlide,
PowerGlide Plus, or UltraGlide Calibration and Operator’s Manual.
Bystander Safety
Autoboom must not be operated in the vicinity of people. Bystanders must
be well outside of the machine’s path while Autoboom is enabled.
Important: Sprayer hydraulics are under pressure. Never
attempt to open or work on a hydraulic system with the
equipment running. Care should always be taken when
opening a system that has been pressurized.
Important: When installing Autoboom hydraulics or
performing diagnostics, maintenance, or routine service,
ensure precautions are taken to prevent any foreign
material or contaminants from being introduced into the
machine’s hydraulic system.

Damage to Machinery and Equipment
The operator must allow a safe distance between the machine’s path and
other machinery or equipment. To determine a safe distance, the operator
should take into account any incorrect operation of the Autoboom boom
management system and the width of the booms.
Obstacle Avoidance
Autoboom CANNOT detect obstacles such as fences, trees, or boulders
that are not located within the path of the sensors or wheels. The machine
operator must identify and avoid obstacles that Autoboom sensors or
wheels are not able to detect while working in a field.
Operator Responsibilities
The operator must remain in complete control of the machine at all times.
Autoboom must be enabled to allow hands-free operation of the booms.
The operator remains fully responsible for the operation of the machine
and must remain in the operator’s seat at all times while Autoboom is
enabled.
Disengaging Boom Control
The operator must manually lift the booms if an obstacle is in the line of
travel and is not detected by the sensors or wheels. Pressing the “Up”
function on the boom controller will disengage Autoboom if Boom Sense
wires have been installed.

PowerGlide
Dual Cartridge
Option
The PowerGlide Dual Cartridge option will allow the Autoboom system to
control each boom independently. With a single cartridge, both booms will
operate together. Use port 5A for left boom operation, and 13A for right
boom operation.
1. Remove the cavity plug (5A) and port plug (6A).
2. The port plug will not be used with the PowerGlide Dual Cartridge
option. However, you will want to keep this plug if you plan to upgrade
to the PowerGlide Plus system.
3. Insert the cavity plug from port 5A into port 6A.

4. Install a mechanical cartridge into port 5A.
Mounting Mount the Autoboom valve on the top support of the center rack slide to
the left of the foamer.

Pressure and Tank Lines
1. Disconnect the pressure line from the machine’s hydraulic boom valve.
2. Attach the supplied Pressure Extension Hose (P/N 214-1000-307) to
the pressure line and then connect the extension hose to the P port on
the Autoboom valve.
3. Connect the supplied Excess Flow hose from EF port on the Autoboom
valve to pressure port on machine’s hydraulic valve (214-1000-306).
4. Disconnect the tank line from the machine’s hydraulic valve and insert
a supplied tee into the tank port. Re-connect the existing tank line to the
tee fitting.
5. Route the supplied tank line hose (P/N 214-1000-308) from the tee to
the tank port on the Autoboom valve.

Left and Right Cylinder (LC and RC)
1. Disconnect the Left Up hose from the machine’s hydraulic valve and
install a supplied tee into the valve.
2. Re-connect the Left Up hose to the installed tee fitting.
3. Attach the supplied hose (P/N 214-1000-309) from the tee to the Left
Cylinder (LC) port on the Autoboom valve.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 to connect the Right Up and Right Cylinder
(RC) ports.

Downs
1. Install tee fittings into the machine valve’s cylinder return ports and
reconnect the existing cylinder return hoses to these installed tees.
2. Attach supplied hoses (P/N 214-1000-139, 305) to the tees installed in
the machine valve’s cylinder return ports and route to left cylinder
return (LF CYL RTN) and right cylinder return (RT CYL RTN) on the
Autoboom valve.

Note: When installing the UltraGlide Autoboom system,
make sure that the pre-installed floating orifices in the
Left Cylinder (LC) and Right Cylinder (RC) ports remain
in the hydraulic block with the the slot facing out.
Floating orifices are not used and not included with the
PowerGlide Plus system.

Pressure and Tank Lines
1. Disconnect the pressure line from the machine’s hydraulic boom valve.

the Autoboom valve.
