RockShox(JUDY)forkscan betuned toyourparticularweight,ridingstyle,andterrain. Ourforksare set up
for the 160 to 180lb (65 to 80Kg), all-around rider who spends equal time riding every off-road terrain
imaginable. Becauseyou’re probably not that rider,you can benefit by making tuning adjustments to suit
yourspecificneeds.Formaximumtuningflexibility,purchaseaRockShoxType3TuningKit(includes primary
andsecondarycoilsprings).
When tuning suspension,alwaysmake onechange ata timeand write itdown. Keeping arecordlets you
knowwhatchangesyouhavetriedandsuggestswhatchangesyoumighttry. Askashoporlocalriderswhat
theyhavefoundworkswell. Theseresourcesare typicallyyourbest bet,butdon’thesitateto callRockShox

RIDE HEIGHT AND SPRING PRELOAD ADJUSTMENT
Judyisdesignedtocompress(sag)whenyouaresittingonthebike. Thissagallowsthefrontwheeltostay
incontactwiththegroundwhenbrakingandcorneringoverroughanduneventerrain.Theoptimumsettings
are7to15mmsagfor63mmtravel;13to20mmfor80mmtravel;and18to25mmfor100mmtravel.
Changingthepreloadaltersthesagandfirmnessoftheinitialforkmovement.Tomeasuresag,installaziptie
onthe uppertube sothatit isflush againstthe Resi-wiperseal;siton thebike withnormalriding apparel;
thenstepoffyourbikeandmeasurethebottomoftheziptietothetopofthewiper.Thismeasurementisthe
amountofsag.Forexample,heavier,moreaggressiveridersneedmorespringpreloadtomaintainproperride

useanycantileverbrakeotherthanthoseintendedbythebrakemanufacturertoworkwitha
hangerlessbrace. Donotroutethecablethroughthestemoranyothermountsorcablestops!Thecable
shouldmakeadirectroutefromthebrakelevertotheRockShoxforkbracemountandbeabletofreely
moveupanddownwiththesuspensionmovement. Itmaybenecessarytoinstallawholenewcable.
MPORTANT:THE DISTANCEFROMTHE TOP OFTHE BRAKE CABLE HANGER TO THE BOTTOMOFTHE BRACE CABLE HOUSING STOP
MUSTBE AMINIMUMOF 12MMWITHTHE BRAKES APPLIED. AN IMPROPERLY INSTALLEDFRONTBRAKE CABLE COULDRESULT
IN LOSSOF CONTROLOFTHEBICYCLEWITHPOSSIBLESERIOUSAND /OR FATALINJURIES.
6. Adjustthefrontwheelquickreleasetoclearthedropout’scounterbore. Thequickreleasenutmustbe
tightenedafterthewheelisproperlyseatedintothedropoutscounterbore. Makesurefourormore
threadsareengagedinthequickreleasenutwhenitisclosed. Orientthequickreleaseleverinfrontof
andparalleltothelowertubeinthelockedposition.
7. Keepinmindtireclearanceasyouchoosetires. Maximumtiresizeis2.2”wideor342mmradius. Be
suretocheckthisradiuswheneveryouchangetires. Todothis,removethespringstack(perthe
instructionsonfollowingpages),andcompressforkcompletelytomakesureatleast5mmofclearance
existsbetweenthetopofthetireandthebottomofthecrown. Exceedingthismaximumwillcausethe
tiretojamagainstthecrownwhentheforksarefullycompressed. Theuppertubesmustalwaysbefully
engagedinthecrown. Theuppertubes,onclamptypecrowns,mustnotextendabovethecrownmore
than1mmandmustalwaysbeengagedinthecrown.

1. Removetheexistingforkandlowerheadsetracefromthebicycle.
2. BeforeyouinstallaJudyXL/XLConthe
bicycle,verifythattheforkhasbeensupplied
withthecorrectuppercrown.RefertoFig.2
foruppercrownsavailableforJudyXL/XLC
and tomaximizeforkstiffnessbyproper
selectionandorientationoftheuppercrown.
3. Thesteerertubemayneedcuttingto
properlength.Tocutthesteerertube,
removaloftheuppertubesarerequired.
Thisisnecessaryotherwisetheupper
tubeswillbeinthewaywhencutting
thesteerertubetoproperlength.The
steerertubelengthisdeterminedbythe
followingparts: JudyXL/XLCupper
crownsteererclamplength,stem
steerertubeclamplength,framehead
tubelengthandtopandbottom
headsetstackheight(seeFig.3,next
page). Toeaseintheassembly,donotinstalltheJUDYXL/XLCuppercrownontotheuppertubesuntil
thesteererhasbeencuttotheproperlengthandthelowercrownhasbeenfastenedintherequired
