1 Introduction
The R&S CMW provides a fully automatic correction of path errors. Before the instru-
ment leaves the Rohde & Schwarz factory, its RF paths are measured and a correction
file is stored on the instrument. After some time of usage the RF paths should be mea-
sured again and a new correction file be created. This is usually done by Rohde &
Schwarz service personnel.
Option R&S CMW-K998 "Enable customer path correction" allows you to create RF
path correction files yourself. This document describes the steps required to create and
apply an RF path correction file.
2 Required Equipment
You need the following hardware, software and licenses to create correction files:
●Power sensor R&S NRP-Z27 (order no. 1169.4102.02)
●Power sensor R&S NRP-Z28 (order no. 1170.8008.02)
●Customer path correction HW set R&S CMW-Z998 (order no. 1208.6129.02):
– Torque wrench for type N connectors, 1.5 Nm or 13.3 lb-in
– Torque wrench for SMA connectors, 0.6 Nm or 5.3 lb-in
– SMA to type N connector adapter
Attach this adapter to the RF cable of the R&S NRP-Z27.
●R&S CMW to be corrected
●R&S CMW-K998 "Enable customer path correction" (order no. 1207.3803.02)
This license must be ordered for each R&S CMW to be corrected.
●Software packages installed on R&S CMW:
–CMW BASE SW (≥ V3.0.12; for frequencies above 3.3 GHz: ≥ V3.2.20)
–CMW Additional Maintenance Package (for freq. above 3.3 GHz: ≥ V3.2.40)
– CMW GPRF SW

3 Creating and Activating a Correction File
The creation and activation of RF path correction files is protected by a login with pass-
word. While you are logged in as "Service TPM", an additional section is available in
the "Setup" dialog of the instrument, allowing you to activate an available RF correction
file and to start a procedure creating a new correction file.
While the procedure is running, dialogs instruct you how to connect a power sensor to
the instrument. Besides this, the procedure runs automatically without user interaction.
Warm-up time
For good results the instrument must be in a steady state before the path correction
procedure is started. Switch on the instrument and let it warm up for at least one hour
before proceeding.
Manual interactions
Do not re-configure the instrument or modify the cabling during the correction proce-
dure unless requested to do so by a dialog.
To guarantee stable results, do not move or touch the RF cable of a connected power
sensor during a measurement.
The following steps describe in detail how to create an RF path correction file.
1. Press "Setup" at the (soft-)front panel to open the "Setup" dialog of the instrument.
2. Select section "System".
3. Press the softkey "User Mode Login".
The "User Mode Login" dialog opens.
4. For "User Mode" select "Service TPM" (Service Third Party Maintenance).
The password is included in the Technical Information for the CMW Additional
Maintenance Package (document number 1208.0280.02). You can download the
Technical Information from the "CMW Customer Web > Downloads > Technical
Information" section on GLORIS, the Global Rohde & Schwarz Information System:

After a successful login the softkey changes to "Logout".

5. Select section "Maintenance > Correction > RF Path".
This section is only displayed after a successful login.

6. If desired, modify the name of the correction file to be created.
The file name extension upd is added automatically if it is missing.
7. Press ON | OFF to start the path correction procedure.
Software tools are started in the background. This may take some time. Eventually
information dialogs are displayed that you must accept to continue.
Afterwards a dialog is displayed, showing the progress of the correction procedure:

8. When a "Wiring" dialog is displayed, follow the instructions in the dialog.

For the example dialog displayed above proceed as follows:
a) Note the required type of power sensor, here R&S NRP-Z27.
b) Connect the power sensor to the SENSOR connector of the instrument.
Note that the instrument needs some time to detect the presence or absence of
a power sensor at the SENSOR connector. For that reason it is recommended
to connect the SENSOR plug first, before connecting the RF ports.
c) Connect the power sensor module to RF 1 COM of the instrument.
Slightly lift the sensor with one hand and turn the locking nut with the other
hand. Use light pressure and keep the sensor perpendicular to the instrument.
For maximum measurement accuracy, tighten the RF connector manually as
far as possible. Then tighten it using an appropriate torque wrench (see
Required Equipment).
d) Connect the RF cable to RF 2 COM of the instrument (first manually, then
using the torque wrench).
9. After you have followed the instructions in the dialog, press OK to continue (earliest
10 seconds after you have connected the SENSOR connector).
Operation without mouse ‒ Within the "Wiring" dialogs you can use the following
front panel keys (only instrument with display) or keys of a connected keyboard:
● To select a button in the dialog, press PREV / NEXT at the front panel. At a
keyboard press TAB / SHIFT + Tab.
● To press the currently selected button, press ENTER or the rotary knob at the
front panel. At a keyboard press ENTER.

10. Follow the instructions in all displayed "Wiring" dialogs.
The correction procedure measures all TX paths with an R&S NRP-Z27 and all RX
paths with an R&S NRP-Z28. So you get at least two "Wiring" dialogs for each RF
COM connector and at least one "Wiring" dialog for each RF OUT connector.
When changing the power sensor, it is recommended to disconnect the SENSOR
plug first, before disconnecting the RF ports. After disconnecting the power sensor
from the SENSOR socket, wait at least 10 seconds before connecting another
power sensor.
11. When the correction procedure is complete, a dialog asks you whether you want to
display the test report.
If you answer yes, the test report is opened in the tool "Report Print PEB". It allows
you to view, print or export the test report.
You can also open the test report later on. It is stored in the directory
d:\Rohde-Schwarz\CMW\History\MFS with the file extension MFS.
The created correction file is activated automatically.
4 Activating Another Correction File
Only one of the RF path correction files stored on the instrument is active at a time.
Information about the latest correction file and the active correction file is displayed at
the bottom of the "Info" dialog. The dialog can be accessed without login. To open the
dialog press "Info" at the (soft-)front panel.

The section "Latest Correction" indicates the type and the creation date of the correc-
tion file that was created last. The section "Active RF Path Correction File" indicates
the name and the creation date of the currently active correction file. If the latest file is
active, both sections display the same date (as in the figure above).
If you want to activate a currently inactive correction file, proceed as follows:
1. Open the "RF Path" section of the "Setup" dialog (see chapter 3).

2. Press "Select" and select the correction file to be activated.
The currently active file is indicated at the top of the section.
