Safety notes
Important
This symbol indicates sections of the text which must be strictly observed. Non-compliance with such
instructions may cause injury or damage.
Before starting the FA45 Color Sensor, read these instructions carefully, ensure that you have
understood them, and comply with them at all times.
The FA45 Color Sensor should be connected only by a qualified electrician.
Do not tamper with or make alterations on the unit!
According to the EU Guidelines for Machinery, the FA45 Color Sensor is not a safety-critical
component, and its use is prohibited under conditions where the safety of persons may depend
on its function.
The IP address set for the FA45 Color Sensor should be marked on the enclosed label. After
installation, stick the label on the sensor in a clearly visible position.
 The IP address of the FA45 Color Sensor must be used once only in any network (see network set-
tings on page 74).
Components supplied
• FA45 Color Sensor including integrated lighting (or as version with C-Mount lens without integrated lighting)
• Computer software version X on CD-ROM
• Operating instructions, mounting clamp, Allen key, screwdriver, 2 protective caps for M12 plug.
Field of application
The FA45 Color Sensor is an optical sensor for detecting colored surfaces. Its main field of application is in the
fields of automation technology and quality assurance. With the FA45 Color Sensor it is possible to detect, for
example, the color of markings, labels, electric wires, LEDs, packaging and components.
Compared to black and white detection, the detection of colors represents a more differentiated means of
identifying objects reliably.
The FA45 Color Sensor is an economical alternative to conventional image-processing systems. Due to the
white light illumination integrated in the sensor, it is also possible to identify objects with difficult surface struc-
tures and Color combinations.

Requirements for use
To configure the FA45 Color Sensor, the following items are required: PC or notebook with min. Pentium III,
1 GHz, 256 MB RAM, Microsoft Windows® 98, 2000 or XPTM with network connection or network with TCP-IP
protocol. Recommended minimum screen resolution 1024 x 768 pixels. Basic knowledge of computing is also
essential.
The IP address of the FA45 Color Sensor is set by the manufacturer to 192.168.100.100 with sub-net mask
255.255.255.0.
The operation of the FA45 Color Sensor is independent of a computer or PLC. A PC or notebook is required
only for configuring the FA45 Color Sensor.
For reproducible results and avoidance of malfunctions, adequate and constant object illumination is essential.

Method of function
Basics
To operate the FA45 Color Sensor, a reference image must be recorded by the FA45 Color Sensor in which at
least one field of view and one Color value are defined (see fig. 7, page 57).
This configuration is stored for Color detection in a non-volatile flash memory and is re-activated after switching
on and off. Stand-alone operation is therefore possible without PC or PLC.
Evaluation method
During operation, the FA45 Color Sensor continuously compares the Color in the defined field of view of the cur-
rent image, with that in the defined field of view of the reference image. This is done by analysing the Color values
of the pixels. If these conform with the reference image taking a certain tolerance into account (percentage of the
set value) the FA45 Color Sensor triggers the switch signal.
Reflections or varying incident light may affect detection results.
 If necessary, use an external white-light source and/or light-screening devices to exclude incident
light.

Installation
Screw the FA45 Color Sensor onto the monting clamp, dovetail FA45 (supplied with the unit) and then onto a
suitable object above. Use only the monting clamp, dovetail FA45 (accessory no. 543-11001) to install the unit.
See dimensional drawing fig. 15, page 91.
Installation Instructions
Observe the object clearance given in the table Field of View / Working Distance (figs. 12 + 13, page 89).
To avoid interfering reflection from the detection object, align the FA45 Color Sensor roughly at an angle of at
least 15° with reference to the optical axis (fig. 1).
Fine adjustment
Important: Fine adjustment of the FA45 Color Sensor should not be carried out until after electrical connection
and start-up (PC software installation). See „Start-up“, page 55.

To ensure maximum accuracy of detection, the FA45 Color Sensor should be mounted in such a
way that it is protected from vibration.
Secure the connection cables with cable binders to prevent crushing or slipping.
Select a position for the FA45 Color Sensor in which interfering factors such as slight differ-
ences in the position of the object or variations in ambient lighting have little or no effect.

Electrical installation
The electrical installation of the FA45 Color Sensor must be carried out by a qualified electrician.
When installing the FA45 Color Sensor disconnect all electrical components from the power
supply.
To avoid collisions when the unit is being used in a network, ensure that the network address (IP
address) of the FA45 Color Sensor set by the manufacturer at 192.168.100.100 is still free and is
not in use for any other unit connected to the system.
If necessary, re-set the IP address of the FA45 Color Sensor as described in the section „Network
settings“ (page 74).
When the FA45 Color Sensor is in use, the protective caps supplied must be pushed onto the
M12 sockets (data and LAN) which are not in use. Failure to do this may cause malfunction.

Should the parameter of the active configuration „Function IN2“ be set to „Enable“ (manufactur-
er‘s setting), the input IN2 must be connected to +UB (= High = Enable) in order to operate the FA45
Color Sensor with an external trigger (input IN1). If no +UB is connected to IN2, the FA45 Color
Sensor will not execute evaluation. In this case it is in standby mode (= Disable). See page 86.

Start-up
To start the FA45 Color Sensor up, proceed as follows:
1. Switch on the power supply (+UB) to the FA45 Color Sensor. If necessary, connect IN2
with +UB (see page 54).
2. For the first start-up of the FA45 Color Sensor install the software supplied (version x.x) on a computer hard
disk. When the CD-ROM is inserted, the installation program starts automatically or can be started using the
setup program SETUP.EXE. Then follow the instructions on the screen.
During installation, the PC software COLOR.EXE is copied onto the hard disk (standard folder: c:\pro-
gramme\sensopart…) and a program group „SensoPart is generated in the operating system (icon „ FA45
Color Sensor…“). These operating instructions can also be read directly from the CD-ROM (supplied).
De-installation
The PC software COLOR.EXE is removed using the operating system (Windows 2000 and XP™)
under „System control“, then „Software“ then „Uninstall“.
3. Start the PC software SensoPart FA45 Color Sensor (COLOR.EXE) by double-clicking the program icon.
Following installation, the program starts automatically.
 The following user interface appears:
SensoPart supplies defect-free software for installation in the customer‘s plant and integration in
the customer‘s computing system. SensoPart is not liable for any interference, failure or damage
to the customer‘s system caused by the installation or integration of the defect-free SensoPart
software.
These conditions are accepted by the customer without reservation by clicking the button at the
start of the software-installation process.
The FA45 Color Sensor functions only with software supplied. Software updates are available
under www.sensopart.de.
For installation of the software using Windows 98, 2000 and XP™, administration rights are
necessary.

After successful program start, only the buttons „Connect“, „Help“ and „About“ are active.
4. Click the button „Connect“ and then the option
„Find“ (see fig. below) to display all the FA45
Color Sensors connected. Then select the
desired FA45 Color Sensor and accept by
clicking on „Connect“. The IP address of the
FA45 Color Sensor must correspond to the IP
address of the PC or the IP-address field of
the network. See section „Network settings“
page 74.
If the software was able to make contact with
the FA45 Color Sensor, all the buttons are
activated after a few seconds and the image
currently „seen“ by the sensor is displayed.
If the buttons are not activated, no contact with
the FA45 Color Sensor is possible.
 Check cable connections, IP address and if necessary determine the IP address of the FA45 Color Sen-
sor with the button „Connect/Find“ and in the new window with the button „Find“, and set the IP address
of the PC and/or the sensor as described in the section „Network settings“ page 74. Then repeat item 4.
If contact with the FA45 Color Sensor is still not possible:
 read the section „Network settings“ page 74 and make the necessary settings to the PC and/or sensor
and/or contact network administrator.
5. Display live image. Click the button „Live display“. The live image appears after a few seconds.

If no live image appears, check the following points:
• No obstruction in front of the lens
• Sufficient lighting (parameter „Lighting = on“ or external lighting)
• Correct shutter setting (fig. 7 A) (see page 56) correct focus setting, see section 6 below.
If the live image still fails to appear, contact the Service dept.

6. Adjusting image focus. To adjust image definition, turn the focussing screw at the rear of the housing (fig. 2,
page 53) in clockwise direction (object distance more) or anticlockwise direction (object distance less).
Check the position of the FA45 Color Sensor and adjust if necessary.
The FA45 Color Sensor is now ready for use.
Before using the FA45 Color Sensor, it should be prepared for the detection task with the assistance of the PC
software. For this purpose, the color characteristics for distinguishing or identifying, must be defined in configu-
ration features 1-32 in the software program.
A general description of the software is given below.

Program description
Menu
The menu for the PC program has main and sub-sections. These are selected by clicking the desired menu
item or by pressing the ALT key and underlined letter at the same time
File / Exit
Exit program.
Options / Language
Select language, German, English or French for the program. The newly selected language is not effective until
the program is re-started.
Options / Big Results
(keyboard locked)
The section „Result“ is shown enlarged in a pop-up window. This means that the window is in the foreground
and no input is possible via keyboard or mouse.
This mode can only be de-activated by placing the mouse pointer inside the Result LED and
pressing the key combination ALT + B at the same time.
Options / Set white balance
The white balance is for color calibration of the FA45 Sensor. To carry our color balance, point the FA45 at a
white surface (white paper). Then set a slightly grey image which is as homogeneous as possible by adjusting
the shutter (see page 46), and select the menu item „Set white balance“.
Options / Reset white balance
De-activate the calibration set above.
Help / Help
Display integrated help system of PC software.
Hilfe / Info
Displays program version.
If the white balance is active, evaluation is slowed down.
 Recommended: Use the white balance only if the colors are widely incorrect. White balance has no
other effect on the evaluation of the image, and serves only to balance the image from a purely optical
point of view.

selected file are displayed and activated.
Reset The settings of a configuration (or all configurations) are
returned to the manufacturer‘s setting.
A Commands
The buttons shown below are for the general operation of the FA45 Color Sensor, administration of configura-
tion data and displaying other information on the program.
If the buttons are not active (pale) the command in question is not available in this mode.

Images from recorder The saved „bad“ images are transferred to the PC by the FA45
Color Sensor.
A maximum of 30 images from the most recent evaluations
which produced the result NIO (not ok = result LED = red)
are saved in the FA45 Color Sensor. Condition: the recorder
was switched on in the section „Select configuration“ in the
„Recorder“ list (see also page 52).
When the „not ok“ images are downloaded, they are deleted
on the FA45 Color Sensor. If such an image is required at a
later date, it should be saved to the computer. The „Save“ but-
ton causes only the currently displayed image to be saved.
Help Display program „Help“ feature
Information Display of program information, e.g. software version.

Select configuration Sensor name Enter name of FA45 Color Sensor. The name appears in Con-
nect / Find.
Image update run
mode
When the checkbox „Image Update Run Mode“ is activated,
the live image is also updated during the exposure process.
Rekorder On / off
If the recorder is switched on, the images of the last 30
exposures which produced a „not ok“ result (LED = red) are
recorded in the FA45 Color Sensor.
The button „Image rec.“ causes these images to be transferred
to the PC. They are deleted from the memory of the FA45
Color Sensor and displayed in a separate window. To store the
current image in the PC, click on the button „Save“.
This makes it possible to diagnose „bad“ parts or improve
configuration data at a later point.
Logic The defined configuration data / samples can be logically
linked with one another to adapt the evaluation function to the
required application. For logical linking, the configurations con-
cerned are marked by a tick and assigned an operator from the
list „Logic“. In all cases, only one operator can be selected.
The configuration for which the parameters are to be set is
selected with radio buttons 1-32.
Note:
1. Since the evaluation is based on one image only, all the con-
figurations used with „Logic“ must be taught using the setting
rules opposite and then saved. The settings refer to config. 1 or
the last configuration activated.
2. In operation with a process control (see page 85) the start
configuration / group is selected using IN2 or the serial inter-
face (see „Transfer protocol RS422“, page 94).
B Select configuration
In this section, up to 32 configurations (colors) can be defined for color-surface detection and also linked with
one another. The formation of configuration groups is also possible. Following selection of the appropriate radio
button (1-32) the data for the configuration selected appear in the section „C Parameter active configuration“
where they can be set.
The grouping of configurations makes it possible to check several characteristics (colors) on
different parts (e.g. change of parts by charge during production process with, for example, 4-5
characteristics per part).
Setting rules for:
- Illumination = identical
- Function IN2 = identical
- Trigger mode = “triggered“
- Teach shutter /manuall = “manual“
- Baud rate RS422 = identical
- Shutter = identical
- Trigger delay = identical
- Result delay = identical
- Result period = identical
- Outputs active = identical
- Threshold value = any
This increases the cycle time of exposure.

The following operators are available in the list section „Logic“:
If the condition defined by the operator is fulfilled (i.e. result =
good) a 1 appears at output OUT3.
Operator Meaning
NONE No logical link, i.e. only the selected con-
figuration applies for evaluation.
AND and OR (without grouping)
refer to one part or one characteristic per part.
The check (without grouping) includes all the configurations
with a tick. It always starts at configuration 1 and ends with the
last configuration activated using the check box (i.e. the tick
must be set continuously).
Operator Meaning
AND To ensure that switch output OUT3
receives a positive signal, all the configu-
rations marked with a tick must give a
„Good“ signal.
OR To ensure that switch output OUT3
receives a positive signal, at least one
configuration must give a „Good“ signal.
The number of the configuration fulfilled
best is displayed  sorting function.
Grouped logical links
(see red and blue area in fig. on left, page 64)
Contrary to the setting rules on page 62, „Func-
tion IN2 = Ld Conf 1-32“ must be entered for
each parameter configuration used (see page 66
and 85), otherwise the initial configuration for a
group cannot be selected during operation.
In all groups only the same operator can be used
at all times. Example: if the configurations of the
group A are linked with „AND grouped“, group B
can also be linked only with „AND grouped“.

In order to identify complex object patterns defi nitely, single
confi gurations may be grouped together logically to form a
group of confi gurations. By means of this logical linking, it is
possible to refer to several characteristics on several differ-
ent parts. E.g. On part A, 7 different characteristics can be
checked and for part B 8 characteristics up to a maximum of
32.
It is not possible to link groups logically with one another.
The evaluation per group starts with the confi guration previ-
ously selected via IN2 or the serial interface and ends after
the fi rst confi guration not marked for logical linking (i.e. with no
tick in the check box). E.g. in the fi g. opposite: group (part) A =
confi guration 1-7 and group (part) B = confi guration 8-15).
The result is output via the serial interface RS422 and con-
tains the complete* information which confi guration „IO“ (ok)
or „NIO“ (not ok) provides. If several confi gurations are „IO“
(ok), the number of the confi guration with the best result is
transferred to the result byte „sorting result“. The most usual
application for this is in sorting (separating) tasks.

After clicking one of the 32 radio buttons, the corresponding
confi guration is selected and can be set. The corresponding
parameters are displayed in the section „Parameter active
confi guration“. Only one confi guration can be selected for set-
ting. After re-start, it is the most recently selected setting which
is active. The selected confi guration covers a fi eld of view
which can be set in the sections „Picture“, and „Parameter“.
If a certain confi guration is to be tested, this can be selected
here and then tested with „Start“ (to test single confi gurations,
set „Logic = none“ temporarily.

The time required for execution increases according to the number of active configurations in compari-
son to one single evaluation (with „OR“ or „OR grouped“).

C Parameters of active configuration
After clicking a radio button in the section „Select configuration“, the parameters for this configuration appear
and can be set accordingly.

Function IN2 Should the parameter of the active con-
figuration „Function IN2“ be set to „Enable“
(manufacturer‘s setting), the input IN2 must be
connected to +UB (= High = Enable) in order to
operate the FA45 Color Sensor with an external
trigger (input IN1). If no +UB is connected to
IN2, the FA45 Color Sensor will not execute
evaluation. In this case it is in standby mode (=
Disable). See page 86.
The other options for parameter „Function IN2“: „Teach
temporary“, „Ld Conf 1 or 2“, Ld Conf 1 - 32“ and „Teach
permanently“ are described on page 85 under „Operation with
a Process-Control System“.
Trigger mode Triggered External trigger signal starts exposure.
Free run Continuous exposure (automatic self-trigger,
see page 60).
