1 General safety notes
■Read the operating instructions before commissioning.

Connection, mounting, and configuration may only be performed by trained
specialists.

Not a safety component in accordance with the EU Machinery Directive.

Do not install the sensor at locations that are exposed to direct UV radiation
(sunlight) or other weather influences, unless this is expressly permitted in the
operating instructions.
■When commissioning, protect the device from moisture and contamination.
■These operating instructions contain information required during the life cycle of
the sensor.
2 Notes on UL approval
The device shall be supplied from an isolating transformer having a secondary overcur‐
rent protective device that complies with UL 248 to be installed in the field rated either:
a) max 5 amps for voltages 0 ~ 20 V (0 ~ 28.3 V peak), or
b) 100 / Vp for voltages of 20 ~ 30 V (28.3 ~ 42.4 V peak).
Alternatively, they can be supplied from a Class 2 power supply.

3 Product description
3.1 Intended use
The WTB4F is an opto-electronic photoelectric background suppression proximity sen‐
sor (referred to as “sensor” in the following) for the optical, non-contact detection of
objects, animals, and persons. If the product is used for any other purpose or modified
in any way, any warranty claim against SICK AG shall become void.

4 Mounting
Mount the sensor using a suitable mounting bracket (see the SICK range of accesso‐
ries).

5 Electrical installation
Operation in standard I/O mode:
The sensors must be connected in a voltage-free state. The following information must
be observed, depending on the connection type:
– Male connector connection: Pin assignment
– Cable: Wire color
Only apply voltage/switch on the voltage supply once all electrical connections have
been established.
Operation in IO-Link mode: Connect the device to a suitable IO-Link master and inte‐
grate in the master or control via IODD/function block. The green LED flashes on the
sensor. IODD and function block are available to download from www.sick.com under
the part number.

6 Commissioning
6.1 Alignment
Align the sensor with the object. Select the position so that the red emitted light beam
hits the center of the object. You must ensure that the optical opening (front screen) of
the sensor is completely clear [see figure 2].

6.2 Check the application conditions:
Sensing range
WTB4F are photoelectric proximity sensors with background suppression. Depending
on the remission of the object to be detected, and perhaps the background behind it,
a minimum distance (y) between the set sensing range (x) and the background is to be
maintained.
Check the application conditions:
Schaltabstand und Distanz zum Objekt bzw. Hintergrund sowie Remissionsvermögen
des Objekts mit dem zugehörigen Diagramm abgleichen (x = Schaltabstand, y = Mind‐
estabstand zwischen eingestelltem Schaltabstand und Hintergrund (weiß, 90%)) Remis‐
sion: 6 % = schwarz 1, 18 % = grau 2, 90 % = weiß 3 (bezogen auf Standardweiß
nach DIN 5033). Wir empfehlen, die Einstellung mit einem Objekt von niedriger Remis‐
sion vorzunehmen.
Die minimale Distanz (= y) für die Hintergrundausblendung kann aus der Abbildung
figure 4 wie folgt ermittelt werden:
Beispiel: x = 100 mm, y = 4 mm. D. h. der Hintergrund (weiß, 90%) wird ab einer
Distanz von > 4 mm vom Sensor ausgeblendet.

8 Disassembly and disposal
The sensor must be disposed of according to the applicable country-specific regula‐
tions. Efforts should be made during the disposal process to recycle the constituent
materials (particularly precious metals).

Disposal of batteries, electric and electronic devices
•According to international directives, batteries, accumulators and electrical or
electronic devices must not be disposed of in general waste.
•The owner is obliged by law to return this devices at the end of their life to the
respective public collection points.

9 Maintenance
SICK sensors are maintenance-free.
We recommend doing the following regularly:
•Clean the external lens surfaces
•Check the screw connections and plug-in connections

Bei diesem Gerät handelt es sich um kein sicherheitsgerichtetes Bauteil im

Installieren Sie den Sensor nicht an Orten, die direkter UV-Strahlung (Son‐

3 Produktbeschreibung
3.1 Bestimmungsgemäße Verwendung
Die WTB4F ist ein optoelektronischer Reflexions-Lichttaster mit Hintergrundausblen‐
dung (im Folgenden Sensor genannt) und wird zum optischen, berührungslosen Erfas‐
sen von Sachen, Tieren und Personen eingesetzt. Bei jeder anderen Verwendung und
bei Veränderungen am Produkt verfällt jeglicher Gewährleistungsanspruch gegenüber
der SICK AG.

4 Montage
Den Sensor an einen geeigneten Befestigungswinkel montieren (siehe SICK-Zube‐
hör-Programm).

Maximal zulässiges Anzugsdrehmoment des Sensors von < 0,4 Nm beachten.
Vorzugsrichtung des Objektes zum Sensor beachten, vgl. siehe Abbildung 13, Seite 19.
5 Elektrische Installation
Betrieb im Standard-I/O-Modus:
Anschluss der Sensoren muss spannungsfrei erfolgen. Je nach Anschlussart sind die
folgenden Informationen zu beachten:
– Steckeranschluss: Pinbelegung
– Leitung: Adernfarbe
Erst nach Anschluss aller elektrischen Verbindungen die Spannungsversorgung anlegen
bzw. einschalten.
Betrieb im IO-Link-Modus: Gerät an geeigneten IO-Link-Master anschließen und per
IODD / Funktionsblock im Master, bzw. in der Steuerung integrieren. Am Sensor blinkt
die grüne Anzeige-LED. IODD und Funktionsblock stehen unter www.sick.com unter der
Bestellnummer zum Download bereit.

6 Inbetriebnahme
6.1 Ausrichtung
Sensor auf Objekt ausrichten. Positionierung so wählen, dass der rote Sendelichtstrahl
in der Mitte des Objekts auftrifft. Es ist darauf zu achten, dass die optische Öffnung
(Frontscheibe) des Sensors vollständig frei ist [siehe Abbildung 14].
